• Trying to configure samba share with office server

  Hi, i'm trying to set up fstab to automatically connect to my office shared server. I'm undoubtedly doing something silly here as the username and password and server name work fine in the first code snippet below, just not the second - any help would be appreciated! • Keep search engine from indexing specific content on your site

  I've got a pretty weird scenario that I was wondering someone could help me out with. I recently created a blog site and noticed that search engines have been including the content of my footer in with the description. This presents a problem because my footer is basic a brief legal statement saying that the views are my own and don't represent the company I work for (and yada yada yada). So, basically, I need a way to prevent search engines from indexint that content in my footer or even my footer altogether. I've been looking back through some of my SEO books and searching through forums but this doesn't seem possible. Is it possible to keep search engines from indexing only certain content on a page? If it isn't possible, what alternatives are there to ensure this legal mumbo jumbo doesn't show up in the results?

• WS2008 subst in Logon script does not "stick"

  I have a terminal server environment exclusively with Windows Server 2008. My problem is that I need to "map" a drive letter to each users Temp folder. This is due to a legacy app that requries a separate Temp folder for each user but which does not understand %temp%. So, just add "subst t: %temp%" to the logon script, right? The problem is that, even though the command runs, the subst doesn't "stick" and the user doesn't get a T: drive. Here is what I have tried; The simplest version: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WinShell.Run "subst T: %temp%", 2, True That didn't work, so tried this for more debug information: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set procEnv = WinShell.Environment("Process") wscript.echo(procEnv("TEMP")) tempDir = procEnv("TEMP") WinShell.Run "subst T: " & tempDir, 3, True This shows me the correct temp path when the user logs in - but still no T: Drive. Decided to resort to brute force and put this in my login script: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WinShell.Run "\\domain\sysvol\esl.hosted\scripts\tempdir.cmd", 3, True where \domain\sysvol\esl.hosted\scripts\tempdir.cmd has this content: echo on subst t: %temp% pause When I log in with the above then the command window opens up and I can see the subst command being executed correctly, with the correct path. But still no T: drive. I have tried running all of the above scripts outside of a login script and they always work perfectly - this problem only occurs when doing it from inside a login script. I found a passing reference on an MSFN forum about a similar problem when the user is already logged on to another machine - but I have this problem even without being logged on to another machine. Any suggestion on how to overcome this will be much appreciated.

• Broken links in content reports when tracking subdomains with Google Analytics

  I have a tracking code that I use on my main site and my blog, which is on a subdomain: www.example.com blog.example.com I have a single profile in Google Analytics. I use advanced segments to look at traffic to the main site vs. traffic to the blog. Problem 1: When I'm browsing my content reports under Standard Reporting, the "Page" column doesn't show the top-level or sub-domain, so I can't differentiate www.example.com/index.html from blog.example.com/index.html easily. According to the docs, this filter is supposed to make GA prepend the hostname to the page URL in your content reports, but it doesn't seem to work. Problem 2: When I click on the little "Open in new window" icon next to a given page in a content report line, it always assumes the page lives on www.example.com, so I get 404s when the page is actually on blog.example.com. Is there a good solution for these subdomain tracking problems?

• CDN virtual subdomain causes duplicated content

  I have created a subdomain and a CNAME record which points to the domain root. The subdomain www.static.example.com is actually a copy of the entire website www.example.com and it is supposed to act as an CDN and serve static content in order to improve speed. However, all of my content can be accessed via subdomain aswell, so Google has indexed it all and now I am dealing with duplicated content. How could I deny access to crawlers for the subdomain baring in mind that I do not have different subfolder for subdomain, so I can't create a separate robots.txt file?

• Upgrade SQLServer 2008 hardware

  Forgive me if I'm not able to be totally clear here. It is not intentional, I'm a senior level developer in a very small company having to act like a manager at the moment. Anyway, the story is that we have 2 older dell servers with SQL Server 2008 Standard in a "cluster". I put that in quotes because I'm still not 100% clear what that means. We have 2 brand new blade servers and want to move the existing databases to the new hardware. Ok, so here is the gotcha. We need to do this with little or no down time. I'm being told that we can evict the passive node, then pull in one of the new servers. But I'm also being told that this is a dangerous step because something could go wrong that would cause the cluster to fail and then we would be left with nothing because the active server would not be able to come back up. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to handle this? I'm being told that the only way to ensure success is to have at least a day of down time where we bring up a new cluster on the new hardware and then migrate the databases 1 by 1.

• Category to Page and blocking category url via robots.txt -Good for SEO?

  I am using a template which in the pages it allows me to add sidebars / more content under and above the content I want to pull from a category which is very helpful. If I create pages to display my categories content wont the page urls go in conflict with the category urls? By conflict I mean causing a duplicate content error? What I thought might help was to block from robots.txt the category urls of the blog ex. /category/books /category/music Would that be a good practice in order to avoid the duplicate content penalty? Any tips appreciated.

  Ok, this may be a strange question, but let's start: If I illegally download a movie (for example...) from a HTTP Web Server, there are many routers between me and the Web Server which are forwarding the data to my PC. As I understand, the owners of the routers are not legally responsible for the data they forward (please correct if I'm wrong). What if I would install a client of a peer-to-peer network on my PC and this client (peer) would forward copyrighted content received from peers to other peers? Hope someone understand what I mean ;-) Any answer or comment would be highly appreciated. • Maintenance window and recovery for a large database

  One of our teams is developing a database that will be somewhat large (~500GB) and grow from there (I know 500 Gigs may seem small to many of you, but it will be one of the larger databases in our shop). One of the issues they are grappling with is backing up and restoring the database. Basically, the database will have several "data" tables and one table used for storing images / documents. We need to accomplish the following: Be able to quickly backup and restore only the data tables (sans images) to our test server for debugging and testing purposes. In the event of a catastrophic database failure, restore the data tables only to get most of the application up and running ASAP. Then, restore the images table when possible. Backup the database within the allotted nightly time window (a few hours). My questions are: Is it possible to accomplish the first two goals while still having the images stored in the same database? If so, would we use filegroups, filestream, or something else? How do other shops backup their databases in a reasonable time window while maintaining high availability? Do you replicate to a second server and backup from there?

• Google search preview shows content not on the website

  My website google search entry is messed up. In the preview in google search results, I get things like cracks, serials, random ip addresses. I scanned all files and my computer for viruses and malware and could not find anything. I also tried to download and reupload all content from a friend's computer and still that content persists. I also scanned the source code of all files, but the content does not appear in any file. Google also does not detect any malware on the website, as seen in their webmaster tools. I have searched using the same keywords in other search engines such as bing and yahoo and the search results there are fine. I am quite clueless as to what the causes would be for this and what would be a possible remedy.

  Possible Duplicate: The SEO Benefit of Breaking Up Content Onto Different Websites I was wondering if (assuming all your content is related) it would be better to put all your content under a single domain or multiple domains that link to each other. Lets say I have Site A which doesn't have a good search ranking. If I have a new product that I'm sure could get a good ranking on its own would I get a better search ranking for Site A if I - Add the new product as a new section to Site A. Or put the product on new Site B and link back to Site A. To give you an example if you were developing a few browser plugins would it be better (in terms of ranking) to showcase them all in the same site, or would you give them each their own domain's that link to each other?   I'm running into a problem where a Server 2003 SP2 box has started crashing roughly once an hour, BSODing out with the message that fltmgr.sys is probably the cause. I ran dumpchk.exe on the memory.dmp file, indicating the same thing. Any thoughts on typical root causes?   Where and How can I enable the Virtual Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 Server Web Console? The IIS is only set up as the default content, nothing more than that. Just to avoid using Remote Connection every time I need to start / end a VM. Thanks.
