  • Are there any modern GUI toolkits which implement a heirarchical menu buffer zone?

    In Bruce Tognazzini's quiz on Fitt's Law, the question discussing the bottleneck in the hierarchical menu (as used in almost every modern desktop UI), talks about his design for the original Mac: The bottleneck is the passage between the first-level menu and the second-level menu. Users first slide the mouse pointer down to the category menu item. Then, they must carefully slide the mouse directly across (horizontally) in order to move the pointer into the secondary menu. The engineer who originally designed hierarchicals apparently had his forearm mounted on a track so that he could move it perfectly in a horizontal direction without any vertical component. Most of us, however, have our forarms mounted on a pivot we like to call our elbow. That means that moving our hand describes an arc, rather than a straight line. Demanding that pivoted people move a mouse pointer along in a straight line horizontally is just wrong. We are naturally going to slip downward even as we try to slide sideways. When we are not allowed to slip downward, the menu we're after is going to slam shut just before we get there. The Windows folks tried to overcome the pivot problem with a hack: If they see the user move down into range of the next item on the primary menu, they don't instantly close the second-level menu. Instead, they leave it open for around a half second, so, if users are really quick, they can be inaccurate but still get into the second-level menu before it slams shut. Unfortunately, people's reactions to heightened chance of error is to slow down, rather than speed up, a well-established phenomenon. Therefore, few users will ever figure out that moving faster could solve their problem. Microsoft's solution is exactly wrong. When I specified the Mac hierarchical menu algorthm in the mid-'80s, I called for a buffer zone shaped like a <, so that users could make an increasingly-greater error as they neared the hierarchical without fear of jumping to an unwanted menu. As long as the user's pointer was moving a few pixels over for every one down, on average, the menu stayed open, no matter how slow they moved. (Cancelling was still really easy; just deliberately move up or down.) This just blew me away! Such a simple idea which would result in a huge improvement in usability. I'm sure I'm not the only one who regularly has the next level of a menu slam shut because I don't move the mouse pointer in a perfectly horizontal line. So my question is: Are there any modern UI toolkits which implement this brilliant idea of a < shaped buffer zone in hierarchical menus? And if not, why not?!

  • How can I securely check if a username is already taken?

    I have a form where someone can create a new user. I'd like to add some AJAX to check if a username is taken, as soon as the input field loses focus. I'm not really sure how to go about this, as this could pave the way to bruteforce attack, since you could check for any username and see whether or not it exists. Any suggestions?

  • Python get raw_input but manually decide when string is done

    I want someone to type words in the console, and autocomplete from a list when they hit "tab" key. However, raw_input won't return a string until someone hits [Enter]. How do I read characters into a variable until the user hits [Enter]? *Note: I don't want to use import readline for autocompletion because of OS issues.

  • Should the function or the caller be resonsible for input validation?

    I'm doing a security audit on a fairly large php application and was wondering where I should include my user-input validation. Should I validate the data, then send the clean data off to the back-end functions or should I rely on each function to do it's own validation? Or even both? Is there any standard or best-practice for this sort of thing? Currently the app does both inconsistently and I'll like to make things more consistent.

  • Detect user logout / shutdown in Python / GTK under Linux

    OK this is presumably a hard one, I've got an pyGTK application that has random crashes due to X Window errors that I can't catch/control. So I created a wrapper that restarts the app as soon as it detects a crash, now comes the problem, when the user logs out or shuts down the system, the app exits with status 1. But on some X errors it does so too.   • Accessing Elmah.axd with SqlErrorLog in SharePoint without adding user to db

    I have installed/configured Elmah on my personal SharePoint dev environment and everything works great since I'm logged in as admin, etc. I am using the MS Sql Server Error Log. (I am also using log4net to handle DEBUG/INFO/etc level logging and log statements are also stored in the db, in the same table as ELMAH's.) However, on the actual dev server (not my personal environment), when I access http://example/elmah.axd I get the error "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'". I understand that this is the traditional error for the "double-hop problem" but I don't even want my credentials to be passed along - I would just like the database access to be made with the credentials of the Application Pool Identity. When using the SP object model the SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges is available; however, I do not want to modify the Elmah source. My production environment precludes the use of SQL Server authentication, changing impersonation to false, or giving myself permissions on the db directly. How can I get this to work? Am I missing something?

    I'm in the processes of internationalizing an iPhone app - I need to make programmatic changes to certain views based on what the user's current locale is. I'm going nuts because no matter what the language preference on the iPhone simulator or actual hardware are, locale always evaluates to "en_US": NSString *locale = [[NSLocale currentLocale] localeIdentifier]; NSLog(@"current locale: %@", locale); The crazy thing is that the rest of the application behaves as expected. The correct strings are selected from the Localization.strings file and used in the interface, and the correct .xib files for the selected locale are used. I have also tried the following, to no avail and with the same result: NSString *locale = [[NSLocale autoupdatingCurrentLocale] localeIdentifier]; NSLog(@"current locale: %@", locale); Is there something simple I'm missing? A preference or an import perhaps?   • wpf - window to be tight round user control

    Hi, I've got a user control that I'm loading into a Window dynamically - I wanted to set the Window so that it didn't have a size and then I thought the window to resize accordingly depending on the UserControl. However it dosn't - can anyone assist please? I've made a very basic example - I've cut out the dynamic bits and just put a UserControl in a Window. What do I need to do to get the window to be tight around the UserControl?   • Using Tweet# to pull 5 most recent updates from a user

    I am working on a method that will allow me to pull in the 5 most recent posts that my company has made on it's Twitter account. One requirement of this web application is that it present these twitter posts as "regular" html in our website, so using the Twitter javascript method is ruled out. I have found Tweet#, a C# plugin that exposes the Twitter commands. This seems to be a nice way to pull this information but I have a question. I would like to be able to pull these updates from Twitter without authenticating to Twitter. Since the information is publically available I would think this would be fairly simple, however I'm having a problem with Tweet# wanting to do this. The cloest I have found to be able to do this requires my to login/authenticate with Twitter and then pull the 5 most recent tweets.     My program checks to test if a word or phrase is a palindrome (reads the same both backward and forward, ex "racecar"). The issue I'm having is after someone enters in "racecar" getting it to actually test. In the below code, I marked where if I type in "racecar" and run, Java returns the correct answer so I know I'm right there. But what am I missing as far as entering it into the console. I think my code is ok, but maybe I have something missing or in the wrong spot?   • CSS Caching and User-CUstomized CSS - Any Suggestions?

    I'm just trying to figure out the best approach here... my consideration is that I'd like my users to be able to customize the colors of certain elements on the page. These are not pre-made css they can choose from, but rather styles that can be edited using javascript to change the style, so they cannot be "pre-made" into separate style sheets. I am also generating the css into a cache directory since I am generating the css through a PHP script. I am thinking that, perhaps I should: 1) If cached css file doesn't exist, create css file using the website default style settings. 2) If cached css file does exist, check if user has custom settings, if so, edit the cache file before displaying it. Btw, when I refer to "cached file" I mean the PHP generated css document. My goal is to prevent the need to have PHP re-generate the css file each time, whilst still allowing users, when logged in, to have their customized css settings applied. I will store these settings in a database most likely so when they return it is saved for them when they login.

    I am designing a system on SharePoint. There is a approval list for the items. The members can approve, reject and edit the items. One from approval list has to fill the "assigned to" field in the item while approving it. The user who is added to "assigned to" field should able to edit the content of the item after it is approved. So, how can I give the edit permission to the users after they are added assigned to field of a specific item? The situation is: approval list: A, B ,C (edit, view permission) users: x,y,z .... (no permission, view after approval) items: item1, item2, item3.... items are invisible. A approved the item1 and added X to "assigned to" field. It means This item is under X's responsibility. But X hasn't got edit permission. we can't give edit permission to X for every item. He should edit the items after he is written into the "assigned to" field. How can I create this workflow in SharePoint? Please urgent help needed.
