  I am looking for a way to take the plug from a ear bud and mic set (e.g. the VModa Vibe Duo) and split it into separate headphone and mic 3.5mm plugs so that I can plug into my computer. Has anybody seen such a splitter? (Yes, I have done some quick searching for it) Thanks in advance. The reason why if you care to read this far is that I work from home and long conference calls with a big set of over-the-hear headphones can get tiring. Thus, I'd like to try with a nice ear bud/mic set and see if that is more comfortable.

• Manipulating IIS7 Configuration with Powershell

  I'm trying to script some IIS7 setup tasks in PowerShell using the WebAdministration module. I'm good with setting simple properties, but am having some trouble when it comes to dealing with collections of elements in the config files. As an immediate, example, I want to have application pools recycle on a given schedule, and the schedule is a collection of times. When I set this up via the IIS management console, the relevant config section looks like this: <add name="CVSupportAppPool"> <recycling> <periodicRestart memory="1024" time="00:00:00"> <schedule> <clear /> <add value="03:31:00" /> </schedule> </periodicRestart> </recycling> </add> In my script I would like to be able to accomplish the same thing, and I have the following two lines: #clear any pre-existing schedule Clear-WebConfiguration "/system.applicationHost/applicationPools/add[@name='$($appPool.Name)']/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule" #add the new schedule Add-WebConfiguration "/system.applicationHost/applicationPools/add[@name='$($appPool.Name)']/recycling/periodicRestart/schedule" -value (New-TimeSpan -h 3 -m 31) That does almost the same thing, but the resulting XML lacks the <clear/> element that is created with via the GUI, which I believe is necessary to avoid inheriting any default values. This sort of collection (with "add", "remove", and "clear" elements) seems to be fairly standard in the config files, but I can't seem to find any good documentation on how to interact with them consistently.

  hi, i am making a database for an accounting/sales type system similar to a car sales database and would like to make some transactions for the following real world actions salesman creates new product shipped onto floor (itempk, car make, year, price).   salesman changes price.   salesman creates sale entry for product sold (salespk, itemforeignkey, price sold, salesman).   salesman cancels item for removed product.   salesman cancels sale for cancelled sale    the examples i have found online are too generic...like this is a transaction... i would like something resembling what i am trying to do to understand it.  anybody have some good similar or related sql examples i can look at to design these? do people use transactions for sales databases?  or if you have done this kind of sql transaction before could you make an outline for how these could be made?  thanks  my thread so far on stack overflow... http://stackoverflow.com/q/4975484/613799

• Machine only responds to network requests from machines it is pinging

  I have two machines. WOPR: Ubuntu server edition 10.10 LTS 32 bit Adam Selene: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit / Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 LTS 64 bit I want to be able to SSH from Adam Selene to WOPR, so I connect them to the same network. Here's where things get weird. I cannot connect to WOPR in any way under normal circumstances. But, if WOPR is pinging Adam, then it starts responding to ping requests, HTTP gets, and SSH tunnels. I'm an amateur, and brand new to Ubuntu server, so I suspect there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but there's an off chance it's a bug in the OS. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior? Thanks a lot!

• Should I have link rel=next & prev on URLs which have query variables?

  For example, I have link rel prev & next set up on these pages of products: site.com?page=2 site.com?page=3 (this is my preferred structure by the way and I'm trying to get all the ugly URLs which are littered with query variables deindexed as they are causing duplicate content). So the above URLs are fine but once a filter to narrow product results is selected, like "price", the URL shows like this: site.com?price[1000-1499]=on site.com?page=2&price[1000-1499]=on As of right now, I am having the link rel prev & next dynamically added to the header of these pages but since I am working on getting these query variable URLs pages deindexed, I am wondering if I should get rid of it on these pages? Any thoughts?

• Writing tests for Rails plugins

  I'm working on a plugin for Rails that would add limited in-memory caching to ActiveRecord's finders. The functionality itself is mature enough, but I can't for the life of me get unit tests to work with the plugin. I now have under vendor/plugins/my_plugin/test/my_plugin_test.rb a standard subclass of ActiveSupport::TestCase with a couple of basic tests. I try running 'rake test' from the plugin directory, and I have confirmed that this task loads the ruby file with the test case, but it doesn't actually run any of the tests. I followed the Rails plugin guide (http://guides.rubyonrails.org/plugins.html) where applicable, but it seems to be horribly outdated (it suggests things that Rails now do automatically, etc.) The only output I get is this: Kakadu:ingenious_record adam$ rake test (in /Users/adam/Sites/1_PRK/vendor/plugins/ingenious_record) /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby -Ilib:lib:test "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.3/lib/rake/rake_test_loader.rb" "test/ingenious_record_test.rb" The simplest test case looks like this: require 'test_helper' require 'active_record' class IngeniousRecordTest < ActiveSupport::TestCase test "example" do assert false end end This should definitely produce at least some output, and the only test in that file should produce a failed assertion.   Right now I have the following query: SELECT name, COUNT(name), time, price, ip, SUM(price) FROM tablename WHERE time >= $yesterday AND time <$today GROUP BY name And what I'd like to do is add a DISTINCT by column 'ip', i.e. SELECT DISTINCT ip FROM tablename So my final output would be all the columns, from all the rows that where time is today, grouped by name (with name count for each repeating name) and no duplicate ip addresses. What should my query look like? (or alternatively, how can I add the missing filter to the output with php)? Thanks in advance.

• How can I draw an arrow at the edge of the screen pointing to an object that is off screen?

  I am wishing to do what is described in this topic: http://www.allegro.cc/forums/print-thread/283220 I have attempted a variety of the methods mentioned here. First I tried to use the method described by Carrus85: Just take the ratio of the two triangle hypontenuses (doesn't matter which triagle you use for the other, I suggest point 1 and point 2 as the distance you calculate). This will give you the aspect ratio percentage of the triangle in the corner from the larger triangle. Then you simply multiply deltax by that value to get the x-coordinate offset, and deltay by that value to get the y-coordinate offset. But I could not find a way to calculate how far the object is away from the edge of the screen. I then tried using ray casting (which I have never done before) suggested by 23yrold3yrold: Fire a ray from the center of the screen to the offscreen object. Calculate where on the rectangle the ray intersects. There's your coordinates. I first calculated the hypotenuse of the triangle formed by the difference in x and y positions of the two points. I used this to create a unit vector along that line. I looped through that vector until either the x coordinate or the y coordinate was off the screen. The two current x and y values then form the x and y of the arrow. Arrows are displayed in the bottom right section of the screen when objects are located above and left of the screen as if the locations of the where the arrows are drawn have been rotated 180 degrees around the center of the screen. I assumed this was due to the fact that when I was calculating the hypotenuse of the triangle, it would always be positive regardless of whether or not the difference in x or difference in y is negative. Thinking about it, ray casting does not seem like a good way of solving the problem (due to the fact that it involves using sqrt() and a large for loop). • Confusion about inheritance

  I know I might get downvoted for this, but I'm really curious. I was taught that inheritance is a very powerful polymorphism tool, but I can't seem to use it well in real cases. So far, I can only use inheritance when the base class is an abstract class. Examples : If we're talking about Product and Inventory, I quickly assumed that a Product is an Inventory because a Product must be inventorized as well. But a problem occured when user wanted to sell their Inventory item. It just doesn't seem to be right to change an Inventory object to it's subtype (Product), it's almost like trying to convert a parent to it's child. Another case is Customer and Member. It is logical (at least for me) to think that a Member is a Customer with some more privileges. Same problem occurred when user wanted to upgrade an existing Customer to become a Member. A very trivial case is the Employee case. Where Manager, Clerk, etc can be derived from Employee. Still, the same upgrading issue. I tried to use composition instead for some cases, but I really wanted to know if I'm missing something for inheritance solution here. My composition solution for those cases : Create a reference of Inventory inside a Product. Here I'm making an assumption about that Product and Inventory is talking in a different context. While Product is in the context of sales (price, volume, discount, etc), Inventory is in the context of physical management (stock, movement, etc). Make a reference of Membership instead inside Customer class instead of previous inheritance solution. Therefor upgrading a Customer is only about instantiating the Customer's Membership property. This example is keep being taught in basic programming classes, but I think it's more proper to have those Manager, Clerk, etc derived from an abstract Role class and make it a property in Employee. I found it difficult to find an example of a concrete class deriving from another concrete class. Is there any inheritance solution in which I can solve those cases? Being new in this OOP thing, I really really need a guidance. Thanks!

• Javascript not working in IE but works in Firefox chrome

  So i have the following php page with a java script that gets the total of items based on their quatity, then inputs the total into a text box for each item. In ie the text boxes are being filled with $NaN. While in firefox, chrome the text boxes are filled with the correct values. • SQL Server Optimizer Malfunction?

  There was a sharp intake of breath from the audience when Adam Machanic declared the SQL Server optimizer to be essentially "stuck in 1997". It was during his fascinating "Query Tuning Mastery: Manhandling Parallelism" session at the recent PASS SQL Summit. Paraphrasing somewhat, Adam (blog | @AdamMachanic) offered a convincing argument that the optimizer often delivers flawed plans based on assumptions that are no longer valid with today’s hardware. In 1997, when Microsoft engineers re-designed the database engine for SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server got its initial implementation of a cost-based optimizer. Up to SQL Server 2000, the developer often had to deploy a steady stream of hints in SQL statements to combat the occasionally wilful plan choices made by the optimizer. However, with each successive release, the optimizer has evolved and improved in its decision-making. It is still prone to the occasional stumble when we tackle difficult problems, join large numbers of tables, perform complex aggregations, and so on, but for most of us, most of the time, the optimizer purrs along efficiently in the background. Adam, however, challenged further any assumption that the current optimizer is competent at providing the most efficient plans for our more complex analytical queries, and in particular of offering up correctly parallelized plans. He painted a picture of a present where complex analytical queries have become ever more prevalent; where disk IO is ever faster so that reads from disk come into buffer cache faster than ever; where the improving RAM-to-data ratio means that we have a better chance of finding our data in cache. Most importantly, we have more CPUs at our disposal than ever before. To get these queries to perform, we not only need to have the right indexes, but also to be able to split the data up into subsets and spread its processing evenly across all these available CPUs. Improvements such as support for ColumnStore indexes are taking things in the right direction, but, unfortunately, deficiencies in the current Optimizer mean that SQL Server is yet to be able to exploit properly all those extra CPUs. Adam’s contention was that the current optimizer uses essentially the same costing model for many of its core operations as it did back in the days of SQL Server 7, based on assumptions that are no longer valid. One example he gave was a "slow disk" bias that may have been valid back in 1997 but certainly is not on modern disk systems. Essentially, the optimizer assesses the relative cost of serial versus parallel plans based on the assumption that there is no IO cost benefit from parallelization, only CPU. It assumes that a single request will saturate the IO channel, and so a query would not run any faster if we parallelized IO because the disk system simply wouldn’t be able to handle the extra pressure. As such, the optimizer often decides that a serial plan is lower cost, often in cases where a parallel plan would improve performance dramatically. It was challenging and thought provoking stuff, as were his techniques for driving parallelism through query logic based on subsets of rows that define the "grain" of the query. I highly recommend you catch the session if you missed it. I’m interested to hear though, when and how often people feel the force of the optimizer’s shortcomings. Barring mistakes, such as stale statistics, how often do you feel the Optimizer fails to find the plan you think it should, and what are the most common causes? Is it fighting to induce it toward parallelism? Combating unexpected plans, arising from table partitioning? Something altogether more prosaic? Cheers, Tony.

  I started using the old confbot python conference script in 2005 for my family. This essentially implements an IRC like conference room over Google Talk (or any Jabber/XMPP server). It has significantly increased family communication, and has become rather indispensable due to this. Recently it's begun to have severe problems (people can't see each other in the conference room) which has nearly killed the usefulness of it. • UITableViewCell with UITableViewCellStyleValue1, adding new line to detailTextLabel at cell at botto

  on my tableview i have the last cell that is not initially visible as seen in the first image, when i scroll the list up, you can see in the second image that the price or my detailTextLabel is put on a new line not maintaining the right justification.   Hello, I have a long file path that works on my server, but a simliar path returns a 404 error when it is on my clients (IIS6) server (http://ddmat.com/). • Xpath that evaluates -all- attributes?

  I maybe be trying to do something invalid here, but maybe someone smarter than me knows the correct syntax to solve my problem. Given: <group code="vehicle"> <line code="car"> <cell> <box code="price">1000.00</box> </cell> </line> <line code="car"> <cell code="sports"> <box code="price">500.00</box> </cell> </line> </group> If I use //*[@code="vehicle"]//*[@code="car"]//*[@code="price"], I will get both boxes returned (1000.00 and 500.00)--as expected but not what I want. Is there an xpath syntax that will evaluate against all nodes that have an attribute of @code rather than skipping it if it doesn't match with the end result being that I only get back the first box (price of 1000.00)? Like asking, choose the first node with @code and that @code must equal "vehicle", then choose the next node with @code and that @code must equal "car", then choose the next node with @code and @code must equal "price".

I would like to have a single price field in my admin panel, where when the first price is entered, an additional price field pops up. However I am kind of at a loss as to how to do this. • OOP Design of items in a Point-of-Sale system

  I am implementing a Point-of-Sale system. In the system I represent an Item in three places, and I wounder how I should represent them in OOP. First I have the WarehouseItem, that contains price, purchase price, info about the supplier, suppliers price, info about the product and quantity in warehouse. Then I have CartItem, which contains the same fields as WarehouseItem, but adds NrOfItems and Discount. And finally I have ReceiptItem, thats contains an item where I have stripped of info about the supplier, and only contains the price that was payed. Are there any OOP-recommendations, best-practices or design patterns that I could apply for this? I don't really know if CartItem should contain (wrap) an WarehouseItem, or extend it, or if I just should copy the fields that I need. Maybe I should create an Item-class where I keep all common fields, and then extend it to WarehouseItem, CartItem and ReceiptItem. Sometimes I think that it is good to keep the field of the item and just display the information that is needed.

I'm trying to do a xpath lookup on nodes returned by xpath lookup, but it doesn't seem to work as I expected.XPaths executed on the child nodes of a document seem to be executd against hthe root node of the document (in the example, the inventory tag.), instead of the root of the provided node. Am I missing something here? I'm new to XPath. Also, please don't answer "just do //book[author='Neal Stephenson'/title". I have a legitimate use case, and this is a simplified example. • Redirecting X output

  Hi, I have a small program that checks some elements of a web service. The program shows graphics output and displays commmand-line results as well. I have been trying to automate this program to run periodically on a server in my office. Problem is, It only works when I have X enabled - either directly on the server, or via ssh -X. Following Google, I have tried Xvfb, which gave me quite cryptic error message: Xvfb :1 -screen 0 1600x1200x32 Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 1 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X1-lock and start again. Any ideas how to run it? I'm actually looking for the X equivalent of &>/dev/null... Thanks in advance, Adam

So I in my JQuery callback function, I have written like product.service.description to get the data. It seems that by default Jackson is not mapping the associated service object (or any other custom object). Also I am not getting any exception. In the JSP, I do not get the data. It is working fine when I return Collection of some object which does not contain any other custom objects as its fields. Am I missing any settings for this to work? Thanks!
