• How can I enable my users to view EPS, PSD, and AI files without the Adobe Creative Suite?

  I have many user's who work on a sales floor and need to be able to open these files just to view them so that they can confirm that the artwork they are getting from a customer is correct before passing it on. I do not want to purchase Adobe Creative Suite licenses for these users so that they can simply view these documents. What is the cheapest and best alternative to the Adobe Creative suite that will realistically open all (or at least some) of the files they are likely to receive? Currently I have tried to use XnView with Ghostscript, Inkscape, and Adobe Acrobat Reader but even with all these combined we still can't open many of the files that we receive.

• How to search a PDF in Acrobat Reader AND jump to a certain page via parameter?

  Hi, we are using lucene within a web application to search in a great number of PDF documents. The workflow is like this: A user enters a search term A list of search results is presented to the user. Each search result represents one PDF document and shows the user on which page the search term was found. Each of these pages is represented as a hyperlink. If the user now clicks on such a hyperlink, he directly jumps to that page. But now the user has the problem that the search term isn't highlighted on the page. Therefore the user has to look on his own to find the search term on the page. What we wanted is a way to highlight the search term on the specific page in the PDF. The open parameters for Acrobat Reader allow for either searching a PDF document (with hit highlighting) OR jumping to a specific page. But the combination of both parameters - which we would need - doesn't work. Does anyone have an idea how jumping to a page and highlighting a search term in a pdf document could work? I had a look at the Acrobat SDK but don't see how we can use it (it's terribly documented). Cheers, Helmut

• Macbook Pro - 15" with i7 processor - Any problems with heat?

  You may have already heard about the review done by the folks at PC Authority in Australia, where they had an i7 MacBook Pro that got up to 100 degrees Celsius during benchmarking. Having read how hot the computer got I started to become hesitant about purchasing. My main concern is long term damage to the computer due to excessive heat. I plan to use the MacBook Pro as a development machine where I will be running Windows 7 within VMWare Fusion or Virtual Box. Within the VM I will be running IIS, SQL Server, Visual Studio and SharePoint Server. Hence why I would like to have the power of the i7 processor. That is why I wanted to check with actually owners of the MacBooks with the i7 processor and see what their experiences have been. Have you noticed excessive heat? How does your Macbook handle process intensive apps over long periods of time? Thank you!

• 13.10 doesn't boot on Vaio Pro 13

  I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my new Vaio Pro 13, disabled safe mode, but used UEFI and not legacy mode. I did an encrypted LVM installation and erased the complete SSD. It booted just fine from USB, but after installation it doesn't boot. The Vaio failed boot screen appears. I then tried this advice here: 13.10 on vaio pro with UEFI sadly it fails for me with "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of /cow." I then tried mounted the encrypted partition with Nautilus and tried this: Cannot update grub with paramters on live USB With /dev/sda2 and then to install GRUB to /dev/sda. Didn't succeed and warned me that the "GPT partition label contains no BIOS Boot Partition; embedding won't be possible" What do i have to do, go fix GRUB and be able to boot my finished install?   Hello I am downloading and storing files locally in the app storage domain. For some reason one of the files gets locked by air. I found this by looking at process explorer. If I clear the browser cache the file never gets locked, only if it attempts to download the file but it exists in browser cache does air lock the damn file. Please can you help? Neil

  Does anyone know an Actionscript equivalent of the javascript getElementsByClassName. What I would like to do is add a custom 'stylename' to various components which I can then use to get a collection of these objects and therefore process their visibility property. The idea is I want to hide various components based on what roles a logged in user has - I just want to make this flexible by adding an array of rolenames to a custom property or use the stylename property on a Canvas or Panel etc. Thanks

  Hi All, I am writing a custom item renderer to render a column series in my application. Its a stacked chart and i want to use the same item renderer for both the column series. The color for each series in the stack is different and am setting that in the 'fill' property of the two series. My doubt is how can i get the color specified in the fill property of the column series from the item renderer. if this works then i can very well use the same renderer for both series.   I am building a Audio Recording tool using Flash and Wowza. I dont want to start the recording until the use clicks the Allow Button is the Security Pop-up question represented here http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help05.html In Audio I dont get this until I attach the stream to it. In Video can get thsi question when I attach the camera to Video. I want to avoid making a connection until the user clicks Accept and this doesn't happen until I make the connection request in Audio.   Hello everyone, I have a SWF file which contains of an image (1keyframe) and also, it contains an AS3 file with the following codes: var loader:Loader=new Loader(); var ur:URLRequest=new URLRequest("1.swf"); loader.load(ur); addChild(loader); so basically, i am trying to play the swf file (1.swf - an audio) while the image is being displayed. What I want to know is how will I be able to publish this project into an SWF file which can still play as expected even without the raw 1.swf file. I can publish SWF right now but when I delete the 1.swf file, my generated swf can only display the image. Help me please. Thanks in advance :)

Everything compiles and runs fine under adl, but when the final air file is built and installed, the main class is never initialized. For instance: package { import flash.display.Sprite; public class main extends Sprite { public function main() { trace("Init"); } } } When run under ADL, "Init" will be output to the console, but when installed and run, nothing happens (the constructor for class main is never called).

• MacBook Pro - Aquamacs - spell check

  I have tried to use spell check for aquamac. I highlighted a region of the text. Then clicked Edit, then spell check region. I got the error message: Error : No word lists can be found for the language "en_US". Then I went to the website to download the following dictionaries: CocoAspell : I just clicked the download button. It was reported that the download was successful. However, when I tested it and highlighted a text region and clicked spell check. The same error message came out. Do I need to pull the downloaded .pkg to a certain place, such as the application folder, before I opened the .pkg? Or what else do I need to do make it work? I also downloaded the base package Aspell (for Intel) and the pre-built dictionaries as (as the instruction of the website), just the same way as point 1. I still got the same error message.   I have a canvas containing a datagrid. I set horz and vert scroll to 'off' for the canvas, and set both to 'auto' for the DG. This works until I have a larger number of columns in the DG (=16), then the vert scroll bar doesn't appear. Anyone seen this and, better yet, have an answer? TIA, Perflexed

  I have a form in a large box, to be filled in by the user with up to 2500 characters. Currently, the cursor starts in the vertical center of the box and I would like: a) The cursor to start at the top left of the field instead of the middle left, so that there is no whitespace above the user's entered text. or b) Somehow enabling a field that expands to fit its text to expand as the text is being entered. • Adobe Air: Read and Write MP3 or JPG from local directory and switch bytes

  I would like to make my local jpg and mp3 files kind of unreadable (without encoding) by just putting the first 100 bytes from the beginning of the file to the end and then saving the file with a .dat extension. I know I have to use the byte array but can't get it work. I would also need then a small function to read that file and put the 100bytes back to the front so that I can play/display the file. It would be great if you could post the whole function because I am quite new to Air so that I fully understand. Thank You!!!!

  I have some code as follows: private function onComboChange(evt:Event):void { var temp:Date = df_date.selectedDate; temp.date += 5; df_dateDue.selectedDate = new Date(temp); } In essence, I am trying to add 5 days onto the selected date in df_date, and put that date into df_dateDue. This fires off via an EventListener on a combobox. Both df_date and df_dateDue are dateFields. OK, so the first time that I run this, it works fine; df_date stays the same and df_dateDue is set to 5 days past df_date. However, the next time that I run it, df_dateDue increments by 10 days from df_date, the next time by 15, and so on. So, stepping through the code shows that somehow df_date has become linked to the temp var, and that the temp var is not resetting itself each time the function is called. Example: df_date = 01 Jan, df_dateDue = 01 Jan. Fire off the event, df_date = 01 Jan, df_dateDue = 06 Jan Fire off the event again. At this point, var temp = 06 Jan (even though df_date still shows 01 Jan), and df_dateDue is then set to 11 Jan Fire off the event again. At this point var temp = 11 Jan (even though df_date = 01 Jan), and df_dateDue is then set to 16 Jan What am I missing here?
