  • Indesign Import XML into Automatic Page generation, data merge

    I've created some InDesign Pages that I want to use as templates. I've created an XML file with all the appropriate data. I want to merge the XML data with the InDesign page and have a few hundred pages automatically generated. I've been reading online and working with InDesign's "Import XML" features without any luck. The documentation has been pretty poor for me. And Google searches haven't returned much fruitful. Edit: I'm updating this to now include my present steps 1) I create a Master Page of my template 2) I add a bunch of text frames where I want the imported data from the XML file to be places 3) I open the "Tags" window and Import and XML file 4) I mark my text frames in the Master Document with the appropriate tags 5) I then add a lot of pages (like 200) to the document 6) Then I use "Import XML" to try and get the data brought in and filled across all 200 pages. This is where I fail. So there's something I'm missing. It might be that InDesign doesn't work as I'm expecting... Anyone have any good tips for mail-merge like functionality with an XML document and auto-generation of InDesign pages? BTW, here's an example of Adobe's great documentation for merging repeated XML elements.   • pGina with automatic Kerberos ticket and OpenAFS token/ticket

    I am currently updating our educational Windows lab images from XP to 7, In doing so we are also migrating from Comtarsia to pGina. Unfortunately somewhere in the transition our automation that fetched kerberos and OpenAFS tickets/tokens on login has completely stopped functioning. Basically what used to happen was, using kfw-3.2.2 and the old OpenAFS release (loopback adapter days), either comtarsia would share password or something with the NIM (Network Identity Manager) which would authenticate against the kerberos server gaining a ticket and AFS token needed to access the users file, this was aided by the fact that our ldap database that windows authenticates against is also what kerberos uses to authenticate so usernames/passwords are the same across both services. I have set up all of the tools, albeit newer 64bit versions which seem to have given me less trouble than the previous releases of NIM/OpenAFS/Krb5, as well as setting their configurations back to what we used to use. Unfortunately this seems to be fubar'd in some way, instead all we get now is a OpenAFS token, most likely I assume from the AFScreds tool which operates some kind of integrated login process, although this does not help in getting a kerberos ticket or a afs ticket for which a login box is provided be NIM after the user logs in. Does anyone know IF it is possible to do what we are trying, and if so how? I was considering writing a pGina plugin which would interact with the server itself but this seems slightly like overkill considering that all these applications already exist...

  • Remove automatic Aero disabling in Windows 7

    Sometimes when I'm playing games which are heavy on the GPU, Windows decides to helpfully disable aero, causing everything to freeze for a bit and in the worst case, combined with ATI's brilliant drivers, causes the game to crash. So, How do I stop Windows from automatically disabling Aero when playing games? It has absolutely no effect on the performance of the game itself when it does that. Also, I'd like to get rid of the "You should disable Aero to improve performance" helpful hint popup which sometimes shows up. But I suppose getting rid of the first will get rid of the second, assuming anyone knows how.

    I'm writing a bash script to back up my databases. Most are postgresql, and in postgres there's a way to avoid having to authenticate by creating a ~/.pgpass file which contains the postgres password. I put this in root's home directory and made it chmod 0600, so that root could dump the postgres databases without having to authenticate. Now I want to do something similar for mysql, although I only have one mysql database. How can I do this? I don't want to specify the password on the command line for mysqldump because this is part of a script that might be somewhat visible to other users. Is there a better way (i.e. built in to mysql) to do this than make a file that only root can read and then read that to get the mysql password, and then use that in the bash script as a variable?

  • Automatic subdomain wildcard for DHCP-DDNS additions?

    I'm running dhcp-4.0.2 server and bind-9.6.1-P3. When a new Mac OSX DHCP client with the name "harry" connects to the network, the DHCP server gives it a lease, and adds appropriate A & PTR records via DDNS. This works fine; harry.my.domain points to (e.g.) 192.168.1.3, the Mac client knows that its name is harry.my.domain, 192.168.1.3 points back to harry.my.domain, and all that is great. Now I want *.harry.my.domain to resolve to 192.168.1.3, and I don't want to have to go in and add wildcard records into zone files. I want the Mac to connect to the network, and have the hostname and wildcard subdomain resolve to the IP address it's been given. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

    The title already says it. What I'm looking for is essentially the pure commandline counterpart to ark -ba <path> (on KDE), or file-roller -h <path> (on GNOME/Unity). Unfortunately, both ark and file-roller require X to be running.   • PostgreSQL automatic backup

    I have been trying to set up a backup script on a windows server. I have used pgAgent (scheduling for pgAdmin), to run the backup script. No problems with the backup script. However, my jobs are not running like they should. I have set both the schedule, and the steps. I am fairly certain, that I am running the service under a wrong user or a user without the required permissions. I run the service like this: "C:\Program Files\pgAdmin III\pgAgent" INSTALL pgAgent -u postgres -p secret hostaddr=127.0.0.1 dbname=pgadmin user=postgres And I get an error, telling me that there was an error with the login information, though I know it's correct. When I go under services (controlpanel -- administration -- services), I am able to start the service with the local user. Can this be the problem? Where can I see or change the permissions on the postgres user?

  • Windows 7: Computer does not enter automatic standby

    My Windows 7 PC is set to automatically enter standby ("sleep mode") after 30 minutes. For some reason it stopped working a few days ago (it keeps on running). Is there some systematic way to determine what is preventing the system from automatically entering sleep mode after the designated idle time? Manually sending the machine to sleep works fine. The monitor also enters power save mode automatically, so the "idling detection" of Windows seems to work fine.

    I was wondering how you could get apache2 to redirect http://server.com:8080 to https://server.com:8080 - I have an ISPConfig 3 setup and the http://server.com:8080 virtual host currently prints a 400 back request error given that I've tried adding RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !^on$ [NC] RewriteRule . https://%{HTTP_HOST}:8080%{REQUEST_URI} [L] to the ispconfig.vhost file (and reloading the conf) with no success --edit!-- I've been playing around with it and adding an 'always redirect to google' into the ispconfig vhost and it works once you've already started talking ssl to it. this means the non-ssl connections are getting 'bad request errors' before the vhost is loaded... but where...? --edit 2!-- nope, the ssl is handled exclusively by the virtual host - if I turn off the ssl engine then the rewriting works perfectly (but obviously there is no ssl at https://) thanks!

    The server is set to its default configuration to recycle the app pool every 1740 minutes. When this happens the following message is logged: A worker process with process id of '1234' serving application pool 'XX' has requested a recycle because the worker process reached its allowed processing time limit. Directly after logging this message, the web site is unresponsive. The only way to get it back online is by running iisreset manually. Does anyone know a fix for this behavior, other than turning the recycle feature off? Is it a known problem?

    Hi all, Adobe Flash Player is set to automatically check for updates on Windows startup. I've always wondered where exactly it is set to do this. Checking the running services, as well as msconfig does not yield its location. The message in question looks like this: http://www.technipages.com/disable-an-update-to-your-adobe-flash-player-is-available-message-forever.html I know how to disable it via Adobe's web site (instructions are included in link above), but I'm interested in knowing where exactly in Windows is this set to perform this action? I have done some research on this, and people keep saying to check the following registry locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run However, I have checked those locations, and I still cannot locate where this updater is stored. I'm pretty sure that malware also uses this technique to automatically load upon startup, and since it's not in the typical location(s) that a user would look, it's well hidden.   • Remote desktop sessions - Unwanted automatic log off after period of time

    I'm having an issue whenever I connect to any of our servers via RDP - After a certain period of time, it seems to close these sessions, closing all the applications i had open etc... This is particularly annoying if I am running a long process - for example, copying a file - it cuts it off... I then re-connect via RDP, and it effectively loads a new session. Is this set somewhere in Group Policy? Or somewhere else? This is happening on Windows 2008 (it may also be on our 2003 servers, although I haven't noticed...)

  • Turn off email notification from abrt (Automatic Bug Reporting Tool)

    I'm configuring CentOS 6.2 and have seen a few "[abrt] full crash report" emails. I understand that abrt is useful for creating crash dumps and what not, so I don't want to disable the service, I just would like to stop getting the crash report emails. I probably have to add something to the config file in /etc/abrt/abrt.conf. I can't seem to find anything in my searches. Any idea? Thanks. Edit: Here is my abrt.conf, which is rather simple.   • Automatic deployment of VNC server to remote terminals (PC's) via Remote Desktop

    We have several remote, unmanned terminals where I require a VNC server, as using Remote Desktop prevents others using the terminals. Often the connection to one of these is extremely slow, and manually using Remote Desktop to perform the VNC installation is painstaking. What I would like to do is build a package that I could copy onto the remote terminal using Remote Desktop, and then have the package executed to install and configure VNC when the terminal restarts, as they all automatically restart nightly. The terminals are all running Windows XP. Also, out of the many VNC variants out there, which would suit this application?

  • Dedicated server automatic backup solution

    I have a dedicated Ubuntu web server in a cloud environment, and I am looking for a nice way to do automated backups. I would like to backup some directories with web apps, and all my MySql databases. As for destination: make snapshots every two hours localy, and every six hours to a remote ftp server. Also delete backup archives older than seven days(localy + ftp), and notify on any problems by email. Now to achieve some of this functionality I use cron + shell script, and http://www.mysqldumper.net/, but really that doesn't answer my needs. Mysqldumper doesn't know automaticly about new databases, and shell script does not notify on problems. It's something I have to check out from time to time, and i don't have trust for. I googled a while, and seems like most people solve this stuff with shell scripts. Is this a method you can trust? Are there any web-gui tools, I'm missing? Maybe there is a smarter startegy for doing this? I'm a little bit confused.

  • Reasonable automatic HTML to PDF conversion (in UNIX/Linux environment)

    Is there a way to generate PDF documents from HTML files automatically in Linux where the PDF offers some kind of reasonable level of resemblance to the input file? A command-line tool - as opposed to an interactive GUI of some kind - is key. I have tried htmldoc and some related cousins, of course. But these tools are hopelessly stone-age; htmldoc doesn't support CSS at all. You won't find a lot of HTML documents these days that don't have at least some CSS styling. I don't really care about stupid effects or minor embellishments, but the issue is that CSS is at the core of most layouts these days; not many folks are using 6 layers of nested tables anymore. So, if the conversion tool has no grasp of CSS whatsoever, it's not just a matter of "the document doesn't look quite right"; it is likely to not meet the minimum standard of usability at all. It has been suggested to me by some folks to try to use the Gecko rendering engine to generate images that can be converted to PDFs, but I have no idea how one would go about doing this, let alone easily. I have no trouble believing that there are good commercial tools that do this, but I'm really looking for an open-source package if possible, as the endeavour itself is an open-source one and doesn't pay.     I've got a lot of computers on the domain here that do not have remote desktop enabled. I can open the command prompt and do this command: REG.exe ADD \\[the machine im doing this to]\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\\"Terminal Server" /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0 and it works perfectly fine, except for one thing - it makes a prompt asking if I'm sure I want to do this, Yes/No. How would I go about having a batch file auto-answer YES to this, so I don't have to type it every time? It wouldn't be a problem if it was just a couple hundred machines, but there's plenty more than that and it would take a while to do this by hand. Not to mention I might have to sweep a few times to make sure every computer is turned on and is affected by this.

    Hi I have a single monitor, but with a wide resolution. Some times it would be helpful to have two applications running next to each other. Is there a tool to quickly tell windows to resize the two applications to fit the desktop? Perhaps even with an option to make the one application use 75% and the other 25% I know the Windows 7 Alt+left/right arrow feature, which is nice, but still needs too many clicks.
