  • What's new in Servlet 3.1 ? - Java EE 7 moving forward

    - by arungupta
Servlet 3.0 was released as part of Java EE 6 and made huge changes focused at ease-of-use. The idea was to leverage the latest language features such as annotations and generics and modernize how Servlets can be written. The web.xml was made as optional as possible. Servet 3.1 (JSR 340), scheduled to be part of Java EE 7, is an incremental release focusing on couple of key features and some clarifications in the specification. The main features of Servlet 3.1 are explained below: Non-blocking I/O - Servlet 3.0 allowed asynchronous request processing but only traditional I/O was permitted. This can restrict scalability of your applications. Non-blocking I/O allow to build scalable applications. TOTD #188 provide more details about how non-blocking I/O can be done using Servlet 3.1. HTTP protocol upgrade mechanism - Section 14.42 in the HTTP 1.1 specification (RFC 2616) defines an upgrade mechanism that allows to transition from HTTP 1.1 to some other, incompatible protocol. The capabilities and nature of the application-layer communication after the protocol change is entirely dependent upon the new protocol chosen. After an upgrade is negotiated between the client and the server, the subsequent requests use the new chosen protocol for message exchanges. A typical example is how WebSocket protocol is upgraded from HTTP as described in Opening Handshake section of RFC 6455. The decision to upgrade is made in Servlet.service method. This is achieved by adding a new method: HttpServletRequest.upgrade and two new interfaces: javax.servlet.http.HttpUpgradeHandler and javax.servlet.http.WebConnection. TyrusHttpUpgradeHandler shows how WebSocket protocol upgrade is done in Tyrus (Reference Implementation for Java API for WebSocket). Security enhancements Applying run-as security roles to #init and #destroy methods Session fixation attack by adding HttpServletRequest.changeSessionId and a new interface HttpSessionIdListener. You can listen for any session id changes using these methods. Default security semantic for non-specified HTTP method in <security-constraint> Clarifying the semantics if a parameter is specified in the URI and payload Miscellaneous ServletResponse.reset clears any data that exists in the buffer as well as the status code, headers. In addition, Servlet 3.1 will also clears the state of calling getServletOutputStream or getWriter. ServletResponse.setCharacterEncoding: Sets the character encoding (MIME charset) of the response being sent to the client, for example, to UTF-8. Relative protocol URL can be specified in HttpServletResponse.sendRedirect. This will allow a URL to be specified without a scheme. That means instead of specifying "http://anotherhost.com/foo/bar.jsp" as a redirect address, "//anotherhost.com/foo/bar.jsp" can be specified. In this case the scheme of the corresponding request will be used. Clarification in HttpServletRequest.getPart and .getParts without multipart configuration. Clarification that ServletContainerInitializer is independent of metadata-complete and is instantiated per web application. A complete replay of What's New in Servlet 3.1: An Overview from JavaOne 2012 can be seen here (click on CON6793_mp4_6793_001 in Media). Each feature will be added to the JSR subject to EG approval. • .htacces file. Can I block access to a directory without blocking access to the files within it?

    - by steph
I'm building a website, but I'm not entirely sure what to do with the .htaccess file. Say for example I have a folder called pages which holds all my pages, can i deny access to someone if they type in www.website.com/pages so that they can't see the directory? I've tried putting the .htaccess file in the pages folder with the "deny from all" line and although it denies access, it's also denying access to the actual pages. Is there a way to do this without denying access to see the pages on the website, just denying access to the directory? Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, I'm so confused lol. Thanks for any help.

  • The whole site is blocked while one page is waiting for blocking operation (PHP, ASP.NET). Why?

    - by artvolk
Good day! I've found interesting behaviour for both LAMP stack and ASP.NET. The scenario: There is page performing task in 2-3 minutes (making HttpWebRequest for ASP.NET and curl for PHP). While this page is processed all other requests to this virtual host from the same browser are not processed (even if I use different browsers from one machine). I use two pages written in PHP and C#. I've tested with Apache+PHP in both mod_php and fast_cgi modes on Windows and Debian. For ASP.NET I use IIS6 (with dedicated app pool for this site and with default app pool) and IIS7 in integrated mode. I know that it is better to use async calls for such things, but I'm just curious why single page blocks the entire site and not only the thread processing the request? Thanks in advance!

  • Google PageSpeed, optimizing Google's own elements

    - by mowgli
I'm trying Google's PageSpeed online service Ironically, it's primarily highlighting Google's own services as something that needs improvement on my site 1) jQuery from Google: blocking. So I moved all javascript from <head> to the end of the document before </body>. That helped 2) Linking to external Google Font CSS (in <head>): blocking. But the font is critical to the design of the page and should load before much else 3) Google Analytics: Caching is not good. (Google has set it internally to 2 hours expiration). Don't know how to change this (this is also placed at the bottom of page) The Google Font is highlighted as a big priority to change. How can I fix this? Where/how should I call the the font?

  • Troubleshooting Blocked Transaction in SQL Server

    - by ChrisD
While troubleshooting a blocked transaction issue recently, I found this code online.  My apologies in not citing its source, but its lost in my browse history some where.   While the transaction is executing and blocked, open a connection to the database containing the transaction and run the following to return both the SQL statement blocked (the Victim), as well as the statement that’s causing the block (the Culprit)   -- prepare a table so that we can filter out sp_who2 results DECLARE @who TABLE(BlockedId INT, Status VARCHAR(MAX), LOGIN VARCHAR(MAX), HostName VARCHAR(MAX), BlockedById VARCHAR(MAX), DBName VARCHAR(MAX), Command VARCHAR(MAX), CPUTime INT, DiskIO INT, LastBatch VARCHAR(MAX), ProgramName VARCHAR(MAX), SPID_1 INT, REQUESTID INT) INSERT INTO @who EXEC sp_who2 --select the blocked and blocking queries (if any) as SQL text SELECT ( SELECT TEXT FROM sys.dm_exec_sql_text( (SELECT handle FROM ( SELECT CAST(sql_handle AS VARBINARY(128)) AS handle FROM sys.sysprocesses WHERE spid = BlockedId ) query) ) ) AS 'Blocked Query (Victim)', ( SELECT TEXT FROM sys.dm_exec_sql_text( (SELECT handle FROM ( SELECT CAST(sql_handle AS VARBINARY(128)) AS handle FROM sys.sysprocesses WHERE spid = BlockedById ) query) ) ) AS 'Blocking Query (Culprit)' FROM @who WHERE BlockedById != ' .'

  • Windows VirtualBox can't browse network

    - by Don Kirkby
I'm running Windows XP as a VirtualBox guest OS under Ubuntu 11.10, and I can't browse the Windows network. It seems like I can connect to some specific network shares, maybe only ones that are already mapped to drives. If I disable ufw, it all works fine, and when I enable it again, the network browsing continues to work. I tried looking at /var/log/ufw.log and saw it blocking port 138. When I allowed that port, then I saw it blocking port 137. I found this answer, and it led me to bug 360975. The bug originally asked for both nf_conntrack_pptp and nf_conntrack_netbios_ns to be added to the defaults, but in comment 11, Jamie decided not to include nf_conntrack_pptp in the fix. I tried adding it in, and it seemed to solve my problem, but then the problem came back. How can I let the Windows guest OS browse the local network?

  • Identical spam coming from many different (but similar) IP addresses

    - by DisgruntledGoat
A forum I run has been the victim of spam user accounts recently - several accounts that have been registered and the profile fill with advertising/links. All of this is for the same company, or group of companies. I deleted several accounts weeks ago and blocked some IP addresses, but today they have come back with the same spam. Every account has a different IP address, but they are all of the form 122.179.*.* or 122.169.*.*. I am considering blocking those two IP ranges, but there are potentially thousands of IPs in that range. They appear to be assigned to India (although the spam is for an American company) so given the site is for a western, English-speaking audience maybe it doesn't matter. My questions: How are they posting on so many IPs? Is there likely to be a limit to the number of IPs they have access to? Is there anything else I can do at the IP-level to block them? (I am looking into other measures like blocking usernames/links.)

  • Servlet 3.1 Early Draft Now Available

    - by arungupta
JSR 340 has released an Early Draft of the Servlet 3.1 specification. Other than the usual clarifications and javadoc updates, ProtocolHandler and WebConnection are new classes that encapsulates the protocol upgrade processing. This will typically be used for upgrading an HTTP connection to a WebSocket. Section 2.3.3.5 in the specification provide more details on it. Section 3.7 explain non-blocking request processing by the Web container. ReadListener and WriteListener are new interfaces that represents a call-back mechanism to read and write data without blocking. As with other Java EE 7 specifications, progress can be tracked at servlet-spec.java.net. The Expert Group discussions are archived and you can participate by sending an email to [email protected].

  • Is there a C# secure socket other than SSLStream?

    - by AI0867
.NET 2.0 provides only the System.Net.Security.SslStream class for secure sockets in .NET 2.0 and higher, but this uses the Stream interface, which provides the blocking Read/Write members and asynchronous Begin{Read,Write} members. I'm looking for a class that provides functionality similar to System.Net.Sockets.Socket. Specifically, something resembling Poll/Select, so I can handle multiple sockets in a single thread without blocking. The mentalis security library supplies a SecureSocket class, but is explicitly unsupported for versions greater than .NET 1.1.

  • Does python's httplib.HTTPConnection block?

    - by python_noob
Hello, I am unsure whether or not the following code is a blocking operation in python: import httplib import urllib def do_request(server, port, timeout, remote_url): conn = httplib.HTTPConnection(server, port, timeout=timeout) conn.request("POST", remote_url, urllib.urlencode(query_dictionary, True)) conn.close() return True do_request("http://www.example.org", 80, 30, "foo/bar") print "hi!" And if it is, how would one go about creating a non-blocking asynchronous http request in python? Thanks from a python noob.

  • client-side synchronous service invocation

    - by qkrsppopcmpt
I am talking about synchronous on the client side. That means, the service requester is blocking after sending a message to the service. my question is: is it related to the -a -s parameter of wsdl2java tool, Since -a generate async style code and -s generate sync style code. Or the client side blocking or not is totally controlled by the client logic? Thanks

  • Sockets and multithreading

    - by V0idExp
Hi to all! I have an interesting (to me) problem... There are two threads, one for capturing data from std input and sending it through socket to server, and another one which receives data from blocking socket. So, when there's no reply from server, recv() call waits indefenitely, right? But instead of blocking only its calling thread, it blocks the overall process! Why this thing occurs?

  • JavaScript Trigger window.open When a User Clicks Anywhere on Page

    - by Joe Hammonds
I have a problem that I have been trying to figure out and haven't been able to get past it because Chrome/FireFox/IE do not publicly publish their "rules" for pop up blocking when it comes to JavaScript, Flash, etc. I am trying to trigger a window.open() when a user clicks anywhere on page. I've tried this: document.onclick = window.open("http://msn.com"); But all 3 browsers are blocking the popup, even though it is a user interaction.

    - by Lirik
I'm looking for implementations of lock-free containers: Blocking Queue Blocking Stack Hash Map etc... Are there any good libraries out there? I would like to refrain from writing these data structures... I would much rather use something that has been tested by the community.

  • Twisted + SQLAlchemy and the best way to do it.

    - by Khorkrak
So I'm writing yet another Twisted based daemon. It'll have an xmlrpc interface as usual so I can easily communicate with it and have other processes interchange data with it as needed. This daemon needs to access a database. We've been using SQL Alchemy in place of hard coding SQL strings for our latest projects - those mostly done for web apps in Pylons. We'd like to do the same for this app and re-use library code that makes use of SQL Alchemy. So what to do? Well of course since that library was written for use in a Pylons app it's all the straight-forward blocking style code that everyone is accustomed to and all of the non-blocking is magically handled by Pylons via threading, thread locals, scoped sessions and so on. So now for Twisted I guess I'm a bit stuck. I could: Just write the sql I need directly if it's minimal and use the dbapi pool in twisted to do runInteractions etc when I need to hit the db. Use the objects and inherently blocking methods in our library and block now and then in my Twisted daemon. Bah. Use sAsync which was last updated in 2008 and kind of reuse the models we have defined already but not really and it does address code that needs to work in Pylons either. Does that even work with the latest version SQL Alchemy? Who knows. That project looked great though - why was it apparently abandoned? Spawn a separate subprocess and have it deal with the library code and all it's blocking, the results being returned back to my daemon when ready as objects marshalled via YAML over xmlrpc. Use deferToThread and then expunge the objects returned having made sure to do eager loads so that I have all my stuff that I might need. Seems kind of ugha to me. I'm also stuck using Python 2.5.4 atm so no 2.6 yet and I don't think I can just do an import from future to get access to the cool new multiprocessing module stuff in there. That's OK though I guess as we've got dealing with interprocess communication down pretty well. So I'm leaning towards option 4 mostly as that would avoid the mortal sin of logic duplication with option 1 while also staying the heck away from threads. Any better ideas?

  • how works applications which blocks web sites?

    - by noisy
I know only one low-level way of blocking websites - hosts file. However, it is obvious that main stream programs has some other way of achieving this. I have an idea for new model of this kind of program, but without possibility of blocking sites it is useless :(

  • ffmpeg async io?

    - by ronag
Anyone know if ffmpeg does asynchronous file io? That is, the input file is read in a separate thread as to avoid io blocking the processing thread? Basically what I want to figure out is whether or not i need to do calls to "av_read_frame" inside a separate thread (to avoid blocking) or if ffmpeg alrdy handles this issue? How might I figure this out? I've tried downloading the ffmpeg source but haven't been able to find anything useful.

  • how to do asynchronous http requests with epoll and python 3.1

    - by flow
there is an interesting page http://scotdoyle.com/python-epoll-howto.html about how to do asnchronous / non-blocking / AIO http serving in python 3. there is the tornado web server which does include a non-blocking http client. i have managed to port parts of the server to python 3.1, but the implementation of the client requires pyCurl and seems to have problems (with one participant stating how ‘Libcurl is such a pain in the neck’, and looking at the incredibly ugly pyCurl page i doubt pyCurl will arrive in py3+ any time soon). now that epoll is available in the standard library, it should be possible to do asynchronous http requests out of the box with python. i really do not want to use asyncore or whatnot; epoll has a reputation for being the ideal tool for the task, and it is part of the python distribution, so using anything but epoll for non-blocking http is highly counterintuitive (prove me wrong if you feel like it). oh, and i feel threading is horrible. no threading. i use stackless. people further interested in the topic of asynchronous http should not miss out on this talk by peter portante at PyCon2010; also of interest is the keynote, where speaker antonio rodriguez at one point emphasizes the importance of having up-to-date web technology libraries right in the standard library.

  • Poco SocketReactors for a Proxy Server

    - by Genesis
Can anyone give me some idea of the best way to implement a non-blocking proxy server using a Poco Socket Reactor? Currently I have a blocking implementation where if a readable notification arrives from the client I am writing what is read directly to the server, and if a readable notification arrives from the server I am writing what is read directly to the client. To achieve this I keep the thread that initiated the server connection alive but I would prefer to switch to non-blocking and have any threads which are used to initiate a connection removed once the server and client sockets are registered with the reactor and the SOCKS5 handshake is over. With a SocketReactor one can register event handlers for a single socket but the trouble is I would need to store whatever is read from that socket in a global buffer until the corresponding server socket is ready to be written to as from my testing I dont seem to be able to just write directly to the server when client data arrives. I am thinking of using a struct that contains the client socket, server socket, client buffer and server buffer and whenever a writable notification comes along for either the client or server, finding the corresponding buffer and writing this. Any thoughts?

  • Asynchronous event loop design and issues.

    - by Artyom
Hello, I'm designing event loop for asynchronous socket IO using epoll/devpoll/kqueue/poll/select (including windows-select). I have two options of performing, IO operation: Non-blocking mode, poll on EAGAIN Set socket to non-blocking mode. Read/Write to socket. If operation succeeds, post completion notification to event loop. If I get EAGAIN, add socket to "select list" and poll socket. Polling mode: poll and then execute Add socket to select list and poll it. Wait for notification that it is readable writable read/write Post completion notification to event loop of sucseeds To me it looks like first would require less system calls when using in normal mode, especially for writing to socket (buffers are quite big). Also it looks like that it would be possible to reduce the overhead over number of "select" executions, especially it is nice when you do not have something that scales well as epoll/devpoll/kqueue. Questions: Are there any advantages of the second approach? Are there any portability issues with non-blocking operations on sockets/file descriptors over numerous operating systems: Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, MacOSX, Windows. Notes: Please do not suggest using existing event-loop/socket-api implementations

  • one key multiple values from different sources c#

    - by user2964034
I am trying to make a c# program that will compare two files for me, and tell me the differences of specific parts. I have been able to get the parts I need into variables while looping through, but I now want to add these to a key with 3 values per file, so a key with 6 values overall which I will then compare to eachother later on. But I can only add 3 values at a time using the loop I have, so I need to be able to add the last 3 values to the key without overwriting the first 3. example of data from file: [\Advanced\Rules\Correlation Rules\Suspect_portscan\]; CheckDescription =S Detect Port scans; Enabled =B 0; Priority =L 3; I have managed to get what I need into variables so I have: string SigName would be "Suspect_portscan" Int Enabled, Priority, Blocking as 0 3 and null respectivly. I then want to make a dictionary type thing, with a key which would be the SigName and the first 3 values as enabled, priority, blocking. Then when looping through the second file, I want to add the 2nd files settings for the enabled, priority, blocking for the same SigName (so to the key) in the last 3 value slots. I will then compare this against itself, like 'if signame(0) != signame(3)' so if file 1 enabled is not the same as file two enabled make a note and tell me. But the problem I have is not being able to get the data into a dictionary or lookup, I'm completely stumped. It seems like I should use a dictionary with a list for the values but I cant get it working on the second loop through. Thanks.

  • How to copy files without slowing down my app?

    - by Kevin Gebhardt
I have a bunch of little files in my assets which need to be copied to the SD-card on the first start of my App. The copy code i got from here placed in an IntentService works like a charm. However, when I start to copy many litte files, the whole app gets increddible slow (I'm not really sure why by the way), which is a really bad experience for the user on first start. As I realised other apps running normal in that time, I tried to start a child process for the service, which didn't work, as I can't acess my assets from another process as far as I understood. Has anybody out there an idea how a) to copy the files without blocking my app b) to get through to my assets from a private process (process=":myOtherProcess" in Manifest) or c) solve the problem in a complete different way Edit: To make this clearer: The copying allready takes place in a seperate thread (started automaticaly by IntentService). The problem is not to separate the task of copying but that the copying in a dedicated thread somehow affects the rest of the app (e.g. blocking to many app-specific resources?) but not other apps (so it's not blocking the whole CPU or someting) Edit2: Problem solved, it turns out, there wasn't really a problem. See my answer below.

  • Can't connect to STunnel when it's running as a service

    - by John Francis
I've got STunnel configured to proxy non SSL POP3 requests to GMail on port 111. This is working fine when STunnel is running as a desktop app, but when I run the STunnel service, I can't connect to port 111 on the machine (using Outlook Express for example).
