  • White Paper/Case Study on ICONICS’ Use of StreamInsight for its Energy AnalytiX&#174; Solution

    - by Roman Schindlauer
A couple of days ago, we released a new StreamInsight white paper/case study on TechNet and MSDN. The paper is joint work with ICONICS and discusses how ICONICS is using StreamInsight technology for its Energy AnalytiX® solution. The paper is available for download here in the Technical Articles section of the StreamInsight documentation. Today, businesses and organizations need to pay more and more attention to energy usage, as customers and the general public are becoming increasingly concerned about a respectful and sustainable use of resources. Organizations therefore need to carefully manage their use of energy and provide better visibility into their energy consumption. In this paper, we discuss how software solutions can help address these challenges. Besides providing some background on the drivers behind energy management, the paper discusses how organizations manage their use of energy with current product and service offerings from Microsoft and ICONICS. In the main body of the paper, a case study explains in depth how ICONICS Energy AnalytiX® is using Microsoft data platform components such as SQL Server StreamInsight to deliver market leading energy management solutions. • UPS vs Solar Power in case of power failure for a server [on hold]

    - by Zen 8000k
I am looking for a low power, low end pc able to run 24/7 without overheating and a way to support it in case of power failure. Power failures can be up to 72 hours. The pc dosen't need a monitor or keyboard. A modem must also be protected in case of power failure. When i say low end, i don't mean crap. The cpu needs to be x86 and have at least 1k cpu in this chart: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/index.php What's the best way to do this? EDIT: more info. I need to run a home server. The server will perform light tasks mainly. A x86 cpu sadly is the only route for my use. I want to be able to run the server and the router/modem in case of power failure. Now, regarding how long the power will fail: 1) 1 hours is OK for most situations. (say 90%) 2) 3 hours is OK (say 98%) 3) 6 hours is more thank OK. (say 99.5%) 4) On extreme cases the power might fail days. I believe this is very unlikely to happen. More is great but, really, how ofter power will fail more than 3 hours? I believe once every year at best. Well, that's too rare to care about. Given the above, I am looking for a cost effective way to archive 1-3 hour power or 6 hour if possible. Solutions: You guys give me great ideas. 1) Power generator: no good as power will fail for 10 seconds before returning. Also I read online, "clean" power generators cost 1.5k+, so it's out of budged. Non clean generator might damage electronics, right? 2) Solar power: i don't know for sure about this. Sounds like a great idea, too good to be true, honestly. For only 200$ i get 100+w? What are the drawbacks here? 3) UPS: This seems to be the best. The only problem is the cost. Cost < 200$ = great 400$ = budged limit

  • System fan connection on Mini-ITX server case and motherboard

    - by Robert
The case: Newegg listing for Chenbro ES34169-BK-120 The motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-D525TUD (Newegg has it as well but I can't post more than one link due to being a new user) As far as the question, the system fan I have no idea how to get these to connect to the motherboard. There are two connectors which then go to extension fan cables. So when you connect these, it should be good, but the extension cables are two connectors that go to the system fans and a female molex connector (if you click the Chenbro listing, look at the 6th picture and you'll see the two connections being made and the molex connector just kind of hanging out in the case). Is there a piece I'm missing to get it to connect to the 3 pin sys_fan section of the board? Thanks,

  • apache domain names are case sensitive

    - by neubert
The following HTTP request results in a "See the error log for more details; Invalid Value Found For Domain" error: GET / HTTP/1.0 Host: www.MyWebsite.com If I make the hostname all lowercase, however, it works just fine. How can I make Apache case insensitive? Here's my httpd.conf file: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mywebsite.com ServerAlias www.mywebsite.com ... </VirtualHost> I tried adding ServerAlias www.MyWebsite.com to that but that didn't help. And in any event, it seems like that's a poor approach anyway since the case can be mixed up in a ton of different ways and trying to account for all of them would result in a huge *.conf file. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Is it the right time to get a Master's degree?

    - by harshit
I'm currently a software engineer in India and have been working for 3,5 years. Before recession started I decided to study further and planned for a Master of Science degree in computer science in Fall09, since I want to explore more of this field. I have got an admission in Univ of Texas @ Dallas. I am confused about whether I should go for studying at the time of recession or not and how the market will be once I graduate in 2011 Jan. Any views will be appreciated.

  • Cut Caseload Costs, Speed Service Delivery For Social Services

    - by michael.seback
Lower Caseload Costs, Speedier Service Delivery with New Oracle Social Services Solution Oracle has just introduced a new solution for social services agencies that's designed to help case workers address the challenges of rising workloads and growing demands by citizens for additional services. In the past, IT departments developed custom software in an effort to meet program outcomes. "Because this capability is out of the box with the Oracle solution, there's less complexity for organizations and an overall lower total cost of ownership," says Kimberly Ellison-Taylor, Oracle's executive director of health and human services. "Self service brings costs down to just pennies per interaction and makes it possible for clients to receive government services more quickly," Ellison-Taylor says. read more

  • Homebrewed Headphone Amp Shows Off DIY Resin Casting Process

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Although the guts of this DIY build are worth checking out in their own right, what really caught our eye was the beautiful resin cast case surrounding the build as it’s something that could be adapted to a wide variety of projects. Over at the electronics blog Runaway Brainz they were looking for a slick way to encase an amp project. Rather than go with a project box or similar construction, they did a resin pour and then sanded and polished the resulting encasement. The results are stunning and turn the electronic guts of the amp into a work of art. • How can I initialize file names in the folders/ subfolders?

    - by user37991
Sometimes Thunar allows 'camel-case' of file names, but only in the immediate folder, not the sub-folders. "Perl module to convert stringt to and from CamelCase" exists in Synaptic, but it is not powerful enough, or am I ignorant? The only way I can reliably do this is with Windows shareware (paid $$): Servant Salamander). That's why all my data & archives are on NTFS partitions. BTW: Synaptic has different entries for 'initialize' and 'initialise'. But I'll mention this in another question.

  • word 2010 spell checker chokes on Camel Case

    - by Avi
This is driving me nuts. I'm using Word to summarize books I study. Now, for a term such as BindingOperations.ClearBinding It first complains about why I don't have "Binding Operations". Then why I don't have "Clear Binding". And lastly, even after I add "BindingOperations" and "ClearBinding" to the dictionary, it complains aobut BindingOperations.ClearBinding! My question is: How can I configure Word's spell checker to accept Word1Word2 and CorrectWord1.CorrectWord2 when the spelling of Word1, Word2, CorrectWord1 and CorrectWord2 are correct? edit: I'm embarresed to say I have solved the problem. I just used dashes as in "Frame-Position" instead of FramePosition.

  • Webcor Builders Coordinates Construction Schedules and Mitigates Potential Delays More Efficiently with Integrated Project Management

Webcor is also known for its award-winning concrete, interior construction, historic restoration, and seismic renovation work. The company has completed more than 50 million square feet of projects to date. Considering the variety and complexity of the construction projects Webcor undertakes, an integrated project management solution is critical to ensuring optimal efficiency and completing client projects on time and on budget. The company previously used a number of scheduling systems for its various building projects. These packages provided different levels of schedule detail and required schedulers, engineers, and other employees to learn multiple systems. From an IT cost and complexity perspective, the company had to manage multiple scheduling systems and pay for multiple sets of licenses. The company looked to standardize on an enterprise project management system, and selected Oracle’s Primavera P6 Enterprise Project Portfolio Management. Webcor uses the solution’s advanced capabilities to schedule complex projects, analyze delays, model and propose multiple scenarios to demonstrate and mitigate delays and cost overruns, and process that information efficiently to deliver the scheduling precision that public and private projects require. In fact, the solution was instrumental in helping the company’s expansion into public sector projects during the recent economic downturn, and with Primavera P6 in place, it can deliver the precise schedule reporting required for large public projects. With Primavera P6 in place, the company could deliver the precise scheduling and milestone reporting capabilities required for large public projects. The solution is in managing the high-profile University of California – Berkeley Memorial Stadium project. Webcor was hired as construction manager and general contractor for the stadium renovation project, which is a fast-paced project located near the seismically active Hayward Fault Zone. Due to the University of California’s football schedule, meeting the Universities deadline for the coming season placed Webcor in a situation where risk awareness and early warnings of issues would be paramount. Webcor and the extended project team needed a solution that could instantly analyze alternate scenarios to mitigate potential delays; Primavera would deliver those answers. The team would also need to enable multiple stakeholders to use an internet-based platform to access the schedule from various locations, and model complicated sequencing requirements where swift decisions would be made to keep the project on track. The schedule is an integral part of Webcor’s construction management process for the stadium project. Rather than providing the client with the industry-standard monthly update, Webcor updates the critical path method (CPM) schedule on a weekly basis. The project team also reviews the schedule and updates weekly to confirm that progress and forecasted performance are accurate. Hired by the University for their ability to deliver in high risk environments The Webcor team was hit recently with a design supplement that could have added up to 70 days to the project. Using Oracle Primavera P6 the team sprung into action analyzing multiple “what if” scenarios to review mitigation means and methods.  Determined to make sure the Bears could take the field in the coming season the project team nearly eliminated the impact with their creative analysis in working the schedule. The total time from the issuance of the final design supplement to an agreed mitigation response was less than one week; leveraging the Oracle Primavera solution Webcor was able to deliver superior customer value With the ability to efficiently manage projects and schedules, Webcor can ensure it completes its projects on time and on budget, as well as inform clients about what changes to plans will mean in terms of delays and additional costs. • Preserving case in HTTP headers with Ruby's Net:HTTP

    - by emh
Although the HTTP spec says that headers are case insensitive; Paypal, with their new adaptive payments API require their headers to be case-sensitive. Using the paypal adaptive payments extension for ActiveMerchant (http://github.com/lamp/paypal_adaptive_gateway) it seems that although the headers are set in all caps, they are sent in mixed case. Here is the code that sends the HTTP request: headers = { "X-PAYPAL-REQUEST-DATA-FORMAT" => "XML", "X-PAYPAL-RESPONSE-DATA-FORMAT" => "JSON", "X-PAYPAL-SECURITY-USERID" => @config[:login], "X-PAYPAL-SECURITY-PASSWORD" => @config[:password], "X-PAYPAL-SECURITY-SIGNATURE" => @config[:signature], "X-PAYPAL-APPLICATION-ID" => @config[:appid] } build_url action request = Net::HTTP::Post.new(@url.path) request.body = @xml headers.each_pair { |k,v| request[k] = v } request.content_type = 'text/xml' proxy = Net::HTTP::Proxy("127.0.0.1", "60723") server = proxy.new(@url.host, 443) server.use_ssl = true server.start { |http| http.request(request) }.body (i added the proxy line so i could see what was going on with Charles - http://www.charlesproxy.com/) When I look at the request headers in charles, this is what i see: X-Paypal-Application-Id ... X-Paypal-Security-Password... X-Paypal-Security-Signature ... X-Paypal-Security-Userid ... X-Paypal-Request-Data-Format XML X-Paypal-Response-Data-Format JSON Accept */* Content-Type text/xml Content-Length 522 Host svcs.sandbox.paypal.com I verified that it is not Charles doing the case conversion by running a similar request using curl. In that test the case was preserved.

  • The ORDER BY clause is invalid in views, inline functions, derived tables, subqueries, and common ta

I get "The ORDER BY clause is invalid in views, inline functions, derived tables, subqueries, and common table expressions, unless TOP or FOR XML is also specified." error with the following code. • need help passing multiple variables from foreach loop to test in switch case statement

    - by Brad
$list_of_groups = array("FACULTY","STAFF"); foreach ($list_of_groups as $i => $group) { $user_in_group = $adldap->user_ingroup($username,$group); print "<h2>Group: ".$group." user in group? ".$user_in_group."</h2>"; // if 1, means yes } Need to print run the appropriate function based on what returns true. There are user's that are members of both FACULTY and STAFF groups, so I want to check for those users and display the appropriate content for them. So if the user is both faculty and staff, then display this, if they are only of staff, display that, same for faculty, might not make sense, but I will write out some code "in theory" that will help you understand what I am trying to do switch(Get group membership of user) { case "FACULTY": print "Faculty group member"; break; case "STAFF": print "Staff group member"; break; case "FACULTY and STAFF": print "Member of both faculty and staff"; break; } I am unsure on how it will check if they are members of both groups and run that thru the case statement to display the appropriate message. The foreach look currently runs thru every group the user belongs to, prints out the ones from the $list_of_groups and the number 1 to the right of it, signifying they belong to it. The problem I have is trying to use that information to run thru the case statement, I am unsure of how to go about that. This is what it prints out for the user currently passed thru the foreach loop: Group: FACULTY user in group? 1 Group: STAFF user in group? 1 Any help is appreciated.

  • SQLite is the CASE statement expensive?

    - by galford13x
I'm wondering if using a CASE statement in SQLite (or other SQL engines) to replace data is not advised. For example lets say I have a query. SELECT Users, CASE WHEN Active = 0 THEN 'Inactive' WHEN Active = 1 THEN 'Active' WHEN Active = 2 THEN 'Processing' ELSE 'ERROR' AS Active FROM UsersTable; When is it better to create a reference table and perform a JOIN. In this case I would create a Table 'ActiveStatesTable' with ActiveID, ActiveDescription and perform the JOIN.

  • best practices - multiple functions vs single function with switch case

    - by Amit
I have a situation where I need to perform several small (but similar) tasks. I can think of two ways to achieve this. First Approach: function doTask1(); function doTask2(); function doTask3(); function doTask4(); Second Approach: // TASK1, TASK2, ... TASK4 are all constants function doTask(TASK) { switch(TASK) { case TASK1: // do task1 break; case TASK2: // do task2 break; case TASK3: // do task3 break; case TASK4: // do task4 break; } } A few more tasks may be added in future (though the chances are rare. but this cannot be ruled out) Please suggest which of the two approaches (or if any other) is a best practice in such a situation.

  • C++ Switch won't compile with externally defined variable used as case

    - by C Nielsen
I'm writing C++ using the MinGW GNU compiler and the problem occurs when I try to use an externally defined integer variable as a case in a switch statement. I get the following compiler error: "case label does not reduce to an integer constant". Because I've defined the integer variable as extern I believe that it should compile, does anyone know what the problem may be? Below is an example: test.cpp #include <iostream> #include "x_def.h" int main() { std::cout << "Main Entered" << std::endl; switch(0) { case test_int: std::cout << "Case X" << std::endl; break; default: std::cout << "Case Default" << std::endl; break; } return 0; } x_def.h extern const int test_int; x_def.cpp const int test_int = 0; This code will compile correctly on Visual C++ 2008. Furthermore a Montanan friend of mine checked the ISO C++ standard and it appears that any const-integer expression should work. Is this possibly a compiler bug or have I missed something obvious? Here's my compiler version information: Reading specs from C:/MinGW/bin/../lib/gcc/mingw32/3.4.5/specs Configured with: ../gcc-3.4.5-20060117-3/configure --with-gcc --with-gnu-ld --with-gnu-as --host=mingw32 --target=mingw32 --prefix=/mingw --enable-threads --disable-nls --enable-languages=c,c++,f77,ada,objc,java --disable-win32-registry --disable-shared --enable-sjlj-exceptions --enable-libgcj --disable-java-awt --without-x --enable-java-gc=boehm --disable-libgcj-debug --enable-interpreter --enable-hash-synchronization --enable-libstdcxx-debug Thread model: win32 gcc version 3.4.5 (mingw-vista special r3)

  • code duplication in sql case statements

    - by NS
Hi I'm trying to output something like the following but am finding that there is a lot of code duplication going on. | australian_has_itch | kiwi_has_itch | | yes | no | | no | n/a | | n/a | no | ... My query looks like this with two case statements that do the same thing but flip the country (my real query has 5 of these case statements): SELECT CASE WHEN NOT EXISTS ( SELECT person_id FROM people_with_skin WHERE people_with_skin.person_id = people.person_id AND people.country = "Australia" ) THEN 'N/A' WHEN EXISTS ( SELECT person_id FROM itch_none_to_report WHERE people.country = "Australia" AND person_id = people.person_id ) THEN 'None to report' WHEN EXISTS ( SELECT person_id FROM itchy_people WHERE people.country = "Australia" AND person_id = people.person_id ) THEN 'Yes' ELSE 'No' END australian_has_itch, CASE WHEN NOT EXISTS ( SELECT person_id FROM people_with_skin WHERE people_with_skin.person_id = people.person_id AND people.country = "NZ" ) THEN 'N/A' WHEN EXISTS ( SELECT person_id FROM itch_none_to_report WHERE people.country = "NZ" AND person_id = people.person_id ) THEN 'None to report' WHEN EXISTS ( SELECT person_id FROM itchy_people WHERE people.country = "NZ" AND person_id = people.person_id ) THEN 'Yes' ELSE 'No' END kiwi_has_itch, FROM people Is there a way for me to condense this somehow and not have so much code duplication? Thanks!
