The stupidest way to do what I want is to just close the window that comes up and return the image which it was displaying. Generally I would just ignore that since seemingly there is no problem except I got a crash report and then I said to report the problem and then I get this. Now, how can a package or program crash that is not even installed? Sounds a little paradox, isn't it? What should I do with this? Why does this even come up?

While old files is being processed, new files can come in. For now, I use quartz scheduler and thread synchronization to ensure that only one thread can process files. • Distributing processing for an application that wasn't designed with that in mind

  We've got the application at work that just sits and does a whole bunch of iterative processing on some data files to perform some simulations. This is done by an "old" Win32 application that isn't multi-processor aware, so new(ish) computers and workstations are mostly sitting idle running this application. However, since it's installed by a typical Windows Install Shield installer, I can't seem to install and run multiple copies of the application. The work can be split up manually before processing, enabling the work to be distributed across multiple machines, but we still can't take advantage of multiple core CPUs. The results can be joined back together after processing to make a complete simulation. Is there a product out there that would let me "compartmentalize" an installation (or 4) so I can take advantage of a multi-core CPU? I had thought of using MS Softgrid, but I believe that still depends on a remote server to do the heavy lifting (though please correct me if I'm wrong). Furthermore, is there a way I can distribute the workload off the one machine? So an input could be split into 50 chunks, handed out to 50 machines, and worked on? All without really changing the initial application? In a perfect world, I'd get the application to take advantage of a DesktopGrid (BOINC), but like most "mission critical corporate applications", the need is there, but the money is not. • Using a Netgear WGR614v9 to extend wireless signal from Netgear DG934GT

  I'm wondering if someone could please provide me the steps for extending/repeating my wirless signal so that I can have greater wireless range throughout my house. I have 2 wirless Netgear routers, a DG934GT ADSL router (base unit) and WGR614v9 cable router (repeater). I've flashed both routers with the latest firmware and have turned on the wireless repeating function in the WGR614v9 but I can't get internet access when connected to the repeater, I can only get it when connected to the base unit. Can this be achieved by running an ethernet cable between the two routers as thus far I've only tried to get them to contact each other wirelessly. Any help would be appreciated

• Blurry Digital TV Signal in Media Center

  I recently reformatted my box and I reinstalled XP Media Center 2005. My TV signal is perfect if I plug it directly into the tv; and at any rate even shows I recorded previous to the reformat are blury. I have installed all updates (including Media Player 11) and I have installed a codec pack for different file types. I have no clue why it wouldn't display right. When I play the previously recorded shows in VLC they come out perfectly clear... Any ideas?

I am trying to use import function in iMovie on OS X 10.6. Every import though the video is super fast, like playing in fast forward. Ever seen anything like this? How can I import this video? • Moving from Analogue PBX to digital VoIP?

  I don't even know if this belongs here?. If not, do let me know. So we have an analogue Alkatel PABX system in our little office. We have extensions, direct lines and PBX lines. We are trying to move to a more digital/flexible way of handling the phones and I've heard good things about FreeSwitch. I have zero knowledge about it. My biggest question is how would one handle existing phone lines with such a system. Surely there must be a way to make and receive calls from outside. • VGA no signal on LCD monitor attached to laptop

  I bought a new Asus vh242h LCD monitor for use with my lenevo T60 laptop running XP professional. Display info under control panel says "Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family". I am connecting via VGA. When I connect the monitor I get "VGA no signal" and the monitor screen stays blank. I have selected the monitor as the display device on the laptop. The information on the monitor displays the correct screen resolution from the laptop, so the monitor is communicating in some way with the laptop. I've successfully tried the monitor with my Dell inspirion 1525 running Windows Vista. I've change the VGA cable to one I know works. Tried different resolutions. I cannot find and specific drivers on the internet for this monitor, so I assume it should work with Plug and Play. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

• Automatic switching between "digital output" (HDMI) and built-in speakers in Vista

  We occasionally connect my wife's laptop, which runs Vista, to our TV. Whenever we do this we have to manually switch the default audio output to "digital output" for the sound to go through the HDMI connection, and we also have to restart any apps that we want to send sound to the TV. We then have to perform a similar process when disconnecting. Is there any way to just have this be automatic? It seems absurd to have to do so much manual fiddling when a 40 year old transistor radio is "smart" enough to turn off the speakers and send sound to the headphones when headphones are plugged in. In case it helps, the name "RealTek" shows up in the sound card settings dialog.

  I have an extremely weird issue with my WiFi router. Both Ubuntu & Windows 7 can connect to it fine, but after 5-10 minutes browser (any one) stops opening pages and tells me it cannot resolve host address. But, at the same time, tools like Skype or BitTorrent work without any issues. I can also browse Internet on my mobile phone connected to the very same router. If I reset router it helps, but after 5-10 minutes I see just the same problem... Ubuntu tells me that WiFi signal is lost (mobile sees it), Windows 7 just won't let me browse anywhere. Can anyone give me a suggestion on this, please? Thanks

  i have a 3.5" western digital my book 500gb external hdd....i gave it to a friend of mine and he broke the usb port in it...i went to a nearby comp repair shop and had him solder the thing...it didnt detect when i plugged it in my dell inspiron laptop........i recently saw about the 3.5" sata to usb enclosure, so i went to check it....strangely when its placed in the enclosure, its not detecting in windows...also when it was put as secondary(im guessing slave) to the shop fellow's desktop it shows up in the bios and starting, but then again doesnt show in windows 7, and the guy told me i need to data recovery to get teh data back p.s.the wd hdd doesnt have os, just data, soo my question is: can i slave the drive to my dell laptop and try to recover the data....if so how? please i would really appreciate it...thanks in advance

  I have a Mac Mini (10.6) with a DVI out to my 720p television. It shows the options for 480p, 720p and 1080i with a little television next to the icons, along with the stand resolutions like 1024x768. The standard resolutions work fine with overscan checked, but I can't get any of the native television resolutions to work. I only get a "no signal" on my television. The input on the television is marked with 1080i/720p/480p and yet only 480p (and the PC native resolutions like 1024x768) work. What's happening?

• Asus Z8NA-D6, not powering up/no signal for monitor

  I have a Asus Z8NA-D6 motherboard. Been running fine so far with one E5504 Xeon processor. I have added another Xeon E5504 CPU to the second slot and it will not power up (or there is no signal to the monitor). The status lights turn on as normal. no error led. Nothing happens other then the leds start and both cpus/fans power up. HDD power up. I tried clearing CMOS. (2 4gb modules) when addin one more to the second cpu it still boots but bios only see the 2 blocks at cpu 1)

• How to "signal" interested child processes (without signals)?

  I'm trying to find a good and simple method to signal child processes (created through SocketServer with ForkingMixIn) from the parent process. While Unix signals could be used, I want to avoid them since only children who are interested should receive the signal, and it would be overkill and complicated to require some kind of registration mechanism to identify to the parent process who is interested. (Please don't suggest threads, as this particular program won't work with threads, and thus has to use forks.)
