  • How can I easily pass all the variables from a template to a partial in Symfony with output escaping

    It there an easy way to pass all the variables a template file has access to onto a partial when I have output escaping on? I tend to create a template file, then refactor things into a partial at some point and it would seem that there would be an easy way to just pass all the same variables from the template to the partial and be done with it. I have output escaping on and I can't just pass in $sf_data. It look like calling a partial from within another partial is very simple...just pass in the variable $vars.

  • How to define template directives (from an API perspective)?

    Preface I'm writing a template language (don't bother trying to talk me out of it), and in it, there are two kinds of user-extensible nodes. TemplateTags and TemplateDirectives. A TemplateTag closely relates to an HTML tag -- it might look something like div(class="green") { "content" } And it'll be rendered as <div class="green">content</div> i.e., it takes a bunch of attributes, plus some content, and spits out some HTML. TemplateDirectives are a little more complicated. They can be things like for loops, ifs, includes, and other such things. They look a lot like a TemplateTag, but they need to be processed differently. For example, @for($i in $items) { div(class="green") { $i } } Would loop over $items and output the content with the variable $i substituted in each time. So.... I'm trying to decide on a way to define these directives now. Template Tags The TemplateTags are pretty easy to write. They look something like this: [TemplateTag] static string div(string content = null, object attrs = null) { return HtmlTag("div", content, attrs); } Where content gets the stuff between the curly braces (pre-rendered if there are variables in it and such), and attrs is either a Dictionary<string,object> of attributes, or an anonymous type used like a dictionary. It just returns the HTML which gets plunked into its place. Simple! You can write tags in basically 1 line. Template Directives The way I've defined them now looks like this: [TemplateDirective] static string @for(string @params, string content) { var tokens = Regex.Split(@params, @"\sin\s").Select(s => s.Trim()).ToArray(); string itemName = tokens[0].Substring(1); string enumName = tokens[1].Substring(1); var enumerable = data[enumName] as IEnumerable; var sb = new StringBuilder(); var template = new Template(content); foreach (var item in enumerable) { var templateVars = new Dictionary<string, object>(data) { { itemName, item } }; sb.Append(template.Render(templateVars)); } return sb.ToString(); } (Working example). Basically, the stuff between the ( and ) is not split into arguments automatically (like the template tags do), and the content isn't pre-rendered either. The reason it isn't pre-rendered is because you might want to add or remove some template variables or something first. In this case, we add the $i variable to the template variables, var templateVars = new Dictionary<string, object>(data) { { itemName, item } }; And then render the content manually, sb.Append(template.Render(templateVars)); Question I'm wondering if this is the best approach to defining custom Template Directives. I want to make it as easy as possible. What if the user doesn't know how to render templates, or doesn't know that he's supposed to? Maybe I should pass in a Template instance pre-filled with the content instead? Or maybe only let him tamper w/ the template variables, and then automatically render the content at the end? OTOH, for things like "if" if the condition fails, then the template wouldn't need to be rendered at all. So there's a lot of flexibility I need to allow in here. Thoughts?

  • How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

    I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck();     From Herb Sutter's GotW #6 Return-by-value should normally be const for non-builtin return types. ... Note: Lakos (pg. 618) argues against returning const value, and notes that it is redundant for builtins anyway (for example, returning "const int"), which he notes may interfere with template instantiation. While Sutter seems to disagree on whether to return a const value or non-const value when returning an object of a non-built type by value with Lakos, he generally agrees that returning a const value of a built-in type (e.g const int) is not a good idea. While I understand why that is useless because the return value cannot be modified as it is an rvalue, I cannot find an example of how that might interfere with template instantiation. Please give me an example of how having a const qualifier for a return type might interfere with template instantiation.

Any further suggestions?

  • Making WatiN Wait for JQuery document.Ready() Functions to Complete

    WatiN's DomContainer.WaitForComplete() method pauses test execution until the DOM has finished loading, but if your page has functions registered with JQuery's ready() function, you'll probably want to wait for those to finish executing before testing it. Here's a WatiN extension method which pauses test execution until that happens. JQuery (as far as I can see) doesn't provide an event or other way of being notified of when it's finished running your ready() functions, so you have to get around it another way. Luckily, because ready() executes the functions it's given in the order they're registered, you can simply register another one to add a 'marker' div to the page, and tell WatiN to wait for that div to exist. Here's the code; I added the extension method to Browser rather than DomContainer (Browser derives from DomContainer) because it's the sort of thing you only execute once for each of the pages your test loads, so Browser seemed like a good place to put it. public static void WaitForJQueryDocumentReadyFunctionsToComplete(this Browser browser) { // Don't try this is JQuery isn't defined on the page: if (bool.Parse(browser.Eval("typeof $ == 'function'"))) { const string jqueryCompleteId = "jquery-document-ready-functions-complete"; // Register a ready() function which adds a marker div to the body: browser.Eval( @"$(document).ready(function() { " + "$('body').append('<div id=""" + jqueryCompleteId + @""" />'); " + "});"); // Wait for the marker div to exist or make the test fail: browser.Div(Find.ById(jqueryCompleteId)) .WaitUntilExistsOrFail(10, "JQuery document ready functions did not complete."); } } The code uses the Eval() method to send JavaScript to the browser to be executed; first to check that JQuery actually exists on the page, then to add the new ready() method. WaitUntilExistsOrFail() is another WatiN extension method I've written (I've ended up writing really quite a lot of them) which waits for the element on which it is invoked to exist, and uses Assert.Fail() to fail the test with the given message if it doesn't exist within the specified number of seconds.   • NoSQL DB for .Net document-based database (ECM)

    I'm halfway through coding a basic multi-tenant SaaS ECM solution. Each client has it's own instance of the database / datastore, but the .Net app is single instance. The documents are pretty much read only (i.e. an image archive of tiffs or PDFs) I've used MSSQL so far, but then started thinking this might be viable in a NoSQL DB (e.g. MongoDB, CouchDB). The basic premise is that it stores documents, each with their own particular indexes. Each tenant can have multiple document types. e.g. One tenant might have an invoice type, which has Customer ID, Invoice Number and Invoice Date. Another tenant might have an application form, which has Member Number, Application Number, Member Name, and Application Date. So far I've used the old method which Sharepoint (used?) to use, and created a document table which has int_field_1, int_field_2, date_field_1, date_field_2, etc. Then, I've got a "mapping" table which stores the customer specific index name, and the database field that will map to. I've avoided the key-value pair model in the DB due to volume of documents. This way, we can support multiple document types in the one table, and get reasonably high performance out of it, and allow for custom document type searches (i.e. user selects a document type, then they're presented with a list of search fields). However, a NoSQL DB might make this a lot simpler, as I don't need to worry about denormalizing the document. However, I've just got concerns about the rest of the data around a document. We store an "action history" against the document. This tracks views, whether someone emails the document from within the system, and other "future" functionality (e.g. faxing). We have control over the document load process, so we can manipulate the data however it needs to be to get it in the document store (e.g. assign unique IDs). Users will not be adding in their own documents, so we shouldn't need to worry about ACID compliance, as the documents are relatively static. So, my questions I guess : Is a NoSQL DB a good fit Is MongoDB the best for Asp.Net (I saw Raven and Velocity, but they're still kinda beta) Can I store a key for each document, and then store the action history in a MSSQL DB with this key? I don't need to do joins, it would be if a person clicks "View History" against a document. How would performance compare between the two (NoSQL DB vs denormalized "document" table) Volumes would be up to 200,000 new documents per month for a single tenant. My current scaling plan with the SQL DB involves moving the SQL DB into a cluster when certain thresholds are reached, and then reviewing partitioning and indexing structures.

    Just have found some funny behavior of the Visual Studio 2008 editor.  Sorry if it is already well known bug. If you happened to have a JavaScript function named “assert” in your code (and there is pretty high likelihood in my opinion), for example something like: function assert(x, message) { if (x) console.log(message); } then when either Format Document (Ctrl + K, Ctrl + D) or Format Selection (Ctrl + K, Ctrl + F) command is applied to the document/block containing the function, the result of the formatting will be: functionassert(x, message) { if (x) console.log(message); } That’s it. function and assert are now joined into one solid word. So be aware of the fact in case you suddenly start receiving  strange exception in your JavaScript code: missing ; before statement functionassert(x, message) And no, it is not an April Fool's joke. Just try for yourself.

  • Strange GTK3 issue with Audacious and Evince (Document Viewer)

    I find that, in some GTK3 apps such as Audacious and Evince (Document Viewer), parts of the UI are pure black, which looks ugly and out-of-place. It is not intentional, as the screenshots on both websites show the app looking different. I only have this issue with the Adwaita GTK theme, but since it comes with Gnome 3 and is the main theme these apps are designed for, I'm guessing the problem is not simply the theme having some bug (though the Ubuntu package might). I have had this issue on two laptops now, running both Ubuntu 12.04 and Xubunu 12.10 with Gnome Shell and Adwaita. The screenshots below show the problem: Audcious's is visible in the search area around the text box, and behind the playlist tabs, and Evince's is visible in more or less the same position and around the document itself.     Imagine there is an application (ASP.NET MVC) that processes some documents. The document must be revised several times by different group of users. state/role rules: simple user can only publish document; (priority: low) userGroup1 can switch it to next state or reject it; (priority: higher) userGroup2 can confirm previous state and switch it to next gradual state or reject it; (priority: highest) How to implement such a workflow in ASP.NET MVC? How to impelement UI, views so that group with lower priority can both visually/technically perform only allowed transitions? Can I somehow extend that system: link? Do I need extras like service bus, event sourcing for that?

This knowledge document outlines a procedure to reliably measure lag between source and target systems through the use of 'heartbeat' tables. The basic idea is to have a table on the source system that gets updated at a predetermined interval. In your capture processes you would capture the update from the heartbeat table. Using tokens you would add some additional information to the heartbeat record to be able to tell which extract process was capturing the update. This additional information would be used downstream to calculate the real lag time between the source and target systems for a given extract and by checking the last update time on the heartbeat at the target you could also determine if data has stopped flowing between the source and target.  Click here to view the document

    An update on Squibbly, the recently announced free and open source integration framework for LibreOffice! Now multiple documents can be opened at the same time, either from "File | Open File" or from the File Browser (i.e., the rebranded Favorites window). Click to enlarge the image below to get a fuller perspective on Squibbly: Take note of the tabs at the bottom of the editor-area in the screenshot above, and especially when you click the image to enlarge it. Multiple tabs are available at the same time, each representing a different open document. Click a different tab and its document is activated and brought to the front of the application. That means multiple LibreOffice applications can be used simultaneously, each could be undocked from the frame of the application, and the user can work with multiple documents, from multiple LibreOffice applications, all at the same time.
