• Proper Network Infastructure Setup DMZ, VPN, Routing Hardware Question

  Greetings Server Fault Universe, So here's a quick background. Two weeks ago I started a new position as the systems administrator for an expanding health services company of just over 100 persons. The individual I was replacing left the company with little to no notice. Basically, I have inherited a network of one main HQ (where I am situated) which has existed for over 10 years, with five smaller offices (less than 20 persons). I am trying to make sense of the current setup. The network at the HQ includes: Linksys RV082 Router providing internet access for employees and site to site VPN connecting the smaller offices (using an RV042 each). We have both cable and dsl lines connected to balance traffic (however this does not work at all and is not my main concern right now). Cisco Ironport appliance. This is the main gateway for our incoming and outgoing emails. This also has an external IP and internal IP. Lotus domino in and out email servers connected to the mentioned Cisco gateway. These also have an external IP and internal IP. Two windows 2003 and 2008 boxes running as domain controllers with DNS of course. These also have both an external IP and internal IP. Website and web mail servers also on both external and internal IPs. I am still confused as why there are so many servers connected directly to the internet. I am seriously looking to redesign this setup with proper security practices in mind (my highest concern) and am in need of a proper firewall setup for the external/internal servers along with a VPN solution about 50 employees. Budget is not a concern as I have been given some flexibility to purchase necessary solutions. I have been told Cisco ASA appliance may help. Does anyone out in the Server Fault Universe have some recommendations? Thank you all in advance.

• IIS crashes with unhandled exception in ASP.NET

  We had an issue recently with an unhandled exception in an ASP.NET C# application bringing down IIS and all application pools that it was hosting. IIS Manager was unable to restart or stop/start the service and I was unable start IIS again after killing w3wp.exe in the task manager. A system reboot restored IIS to a running state; as a primarily Linux admin, I generally consider an unplanned system reboot to resolve a software error to be an act of high heresy. Is there a way to "harden" IIS so that a faulting application does not affect anything but the request that exposes the fault? Some details on the server and application fault. IIS: 7.5 .NET: 4.0 Windows Server 2008 R2 Faulted on call to System.Net.Dns.Resolve() with a url pointing to a non-existant domain as the argument. (I'm aware that this method is deprecated but the point that a page code issue shouldn't bring down the server still stands) The exception generated was SocketException. The faulting module according to event viewer was KERNELBASE.dll The issue was resolved by wrapping the call in a try-catch, logging the exception and displaying some generic content on the page. I'm hoping that I missed something in the IIS config that would switch it to "production" mode or something.

  Small business server 2011 standard - applications randomly closing for remote desktop users I have an issue where when you are connected through remote desktop (doesn't matter whether you have administrative rights or not). Also to elaborate it is happening as frequently as every minute.

• Fresh install CentOS 6.4 64b with directadmin slowly consumes all memory and crashes

  Dear server fault community, This is my first question on server fault, i'm new to server (mis)configuration so please forgive me for asking something stupid :) I'm running Directadmin on a CentOS 6.4 64b with 4GB memory and over 10000Gh virtual machine. I migrated my websites because my former vps couldn't keep up anymore. Only half of the websites from this 1GB machine were migrated jet. So the migration is still in progress and already my server crashes every day. The server performance up until that moment is perfect. The directadmin log files show nothing out of the ordinary. Yesterday only the mysql server crashed but it also crashed the entire machine before. The memory usage in DA seems to be normal: directadmin directadmin (pid 3923 22158 22159 22160 22161 22162 )8.75 MB dovecot dovecot (pid 3851 ) 47.8 MB exim exim (pid 1350 ) 1.29 MB httpd (pid 21525 21528 21529 21530 21531 21532 21546 21571 21742 21743 21744 )490.4 MB mysqld mysqld (pid 1299 ) 287.8 MB named named (pid 3807 ) 16.3 MB proftpd proftpd (pid 1481 ) 1.91 MB sshd sshd (pid 1173 21494 ) 5.16 MB Restarting services immediately frees up memory, but slowly over time the memory usage increases(about 24 hours to crash). The commands: # sync # echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches Will free al memory correct. I could just create a cronjob but it seems the wrong way around to me. I can't seem to pinpoint the cause. Any advices, references or tips are highly appreciated!   On WebLogic 11G I can use the console to set the FrontendHost and FrondendPort on a server or on a cluster so that re-directs are handled correctly and end up resolving to the front end load balancer instead of the local host. The MBeans associated with this on WebLogic are, for example: MBean Name com.bea:Name=AdminServer,Type=WebServer,Server=AdminServer Attribute Name FrontendHost Description The name of the host to which all redirected URLs will be sent. If specified, WebLogic Server will use this value rather than the one in the HOST header. Sets the HTTP frontendHost Provides a method to ensure that the webapp will always have the correct HOST information, even when the request is coming through a firewall or a proxy. If this parameter is configured, the HOST header will be ignored and the information in this parameter will be used in its place. Type java.lang.String Readable / Writable RW How is the same thing achieved under Websphere 7? Follow up info: So I have 2 use cases actually. One is that I have a web app running under WebSphere on host A on port 9002 and a LB running on host B at port 80, when I visit the home page of the app via the LB on http://hostb/app the app redirects my browser to http://hostb:9002/app and it 404's I think this is WebSphere's fault but I guess it could be the app's fault? The second is that the web app in question needs to send emails containing URls that the customer can click on to get back into the web app - obviously this needs to be via the LB. On WebLogic the app uses MBeans to derive the LB url and I was hoping to use a similar mechanism on WebSphere.

• Euro character messed up during FTP transfer

  My customer is using a very outdated ecommerce management system on my hosting service. For that product, no support is being provided anymore by the vendor. Brief explanation: the shop website, that claims to run under LAMP stack, is built by an old Visual Basic Windows application running on MS Access. The user constructs the shop, defines the HTML template, adds products and categories, etc. Then the VB exe builds the PHP pages (one for each template page) and the SQL script to run on MySQL. It also uploads everything via FTP and runs the installation/upgrade script on its own. The problem Browsing the website, many products' descriptions are cut before the euro sign. For example, what was supposed to be "Product price €1000" becomes "Product price" The analysis MySQL contains a cutted description until the € sign, so it's not PHP fault The Access databases contain full description with € sign, so it's not fault of the webmaster writing bad description or eDisplay cutting them The SQL that will run once the site gets uploaded, stored on my local machine before upload, contains the € sign The same script, after being FTPed by eDisplay and opened with nano from SSH, shows the € sign messed up like this: ^À vsftpd log reports (obfuscated for privacy) Sat Dec 15 11:16:57 2012 22 xxx.xxx.128.13 1112727 /srv/www/domains/xxxxxx.it/htdocs/db.sql b _ i r xxxxxxx ftp 0 * c which seems to be a binary transfer (and also a huge security vulnerability because you can download the whole database from unauthenticated HTTP) The eDisplay internal FTP client provides no option for ascii/binary transfer modes [Add] Trying to manually upload the SQL file via SFTP shows messing up euro [Add2] Trying to manually upload using Xftp client with explicit ASCII mode doesn't fix too It looks like the file gets uploaded as binary. • mappoint 2013 randomly crashes on import

  We are sending routes to Mappoint 2013 from our application using an access database. It seems to happen with Mappoint 2010 and 2011 also. It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen. • Are SANs unreliable?

  So at the place where I wear one of my various hats, this one representing a development rather than admin role, there's been an initiative to move to SANs. So far, I have been spectacularly unimpressed. First it was this behavior where, when MySQL databases are on the SAN, the first few tables that anything tries to hit after the system boots come up as nonexistent and MySQL has to be restarted before it realizes they're actually there. Then today, on multiple systems (including the primary SVN repository, ever-so-wonderfully) we get SAN mounts spewing IO errors and the filesystems going into read-only, which is the kind of behavior I expect from directly mounted naked disks, not fault-tolerant managed storage. Right now, I'm at the point where if I were putting together a project and somebody said "hey we should use SANs", my response would be "GTFO". So basically I want to know whether my experience is typical or even common, or whether I'm having some kind of freakishly bad luck with SANs. The systems these SANs are attached to are all CentOS machines, if that's relevant.

  I explain my case: I'm at Amazon AWS and I want to be fault tolerant on a entire region failure. My basic problem is to have the db in sync with 2 regions. My options: Master-Master (high lag) Hand made sync every 5 minutes Master-ColdMaster?! (copy on the fly but Master won't wait the other region commit) In my system we could afford loosing a piece of data (we're not a bank) the last inserts in the db, but we could not afford more than 10 minutes of downtime. The database is small and the level of inserts is low, and I wouldn't affect the normal usage waiting other region commit. Is the 3 solution posible? And the most important, once the primary fail how we can detect and change the rol between master-coldmaster -- coldmaster-master ? Is there any clean-mode to restore between failure? Thank's!

  BACKGROUND: We have a StarWind NAS that we are currently using for High Availability storage with our Windows network. Starwind has mirrored drives and multiple ip paths, that the Windows Server combines into one HA disk store. QUESTION: How do I accomplish the same thing under Solaris 10? I've looked at ZFS but to document seems to indicate that ZFS wants to do its own raid/mirroring. I can also attach via iSCSI from Solaris and am presented with both drives being served by the Starwind NS. So, how do I configure solaris so that disk M1 and M2 are considered as a single fault tolerant drive?

  I'm developing an application for my company that will require a lot of compute capacity (running some very big mathematical calculations), and looking for some form of server setup to do this. For various reasons, we want to run this on-site in our office rather than hosting it externally. It's been a while since I last had to set up my own servers so I thought I would tap into the collective wisdom of serverfault! My broad requirements are: Budget $30-50k, with an aim to get as much compute capacity as possible for that budget 64-bit servers suitable to run Ubuntu Linux + Java Some relatively standalone rack that can be installed in secure office space Fast/low latency network connections between the servers, but don't really care about connectivity to the outside world Storage capacity shared between the servers - they don't necessarily need their own storage providing they can be booted from a common image Downtime can be tolerated (since the calculations are run in batch mode) The software itself is fault-tolerant, so there is no need for extra resiliency in the server setup (cheap replaceable commodity parts will be fine in general) Given these requirements what kind of setup would you recommend and why?

  I wish to learn more about Technical and Solutions Architecture. Specifically, I'm concerned with designing HA, Fault-Tolerant Scalable web-based solutions (enough buzzwords ;-). Its a topic I'm familiar with on a technical level having worked as a sysadmin, but I don't know all the buzzwords Architects use and have to brush up on my UML and diagram techniques. I would like a book that describes what architecture is as a discipline and explores standard design patterns, and some do's and don'ts. Do you have any recommendations? I apologise if this sounds vague, its because I am still learning what Architecture is as a discipline having come from a sysadmin background. To be 100% clear I'm looking for books or websites that give broad overviews of what System Design patterns exist and how the discipline works. • Software RAID underneath ESXi datastore

  I'm building an virtual environment for a small business. It is based around a single ESXi 5.1 host, which will host half a dozen or so VMs. I'm having some doubts regarding how to implement the storage though. I naturally want the datastore to be fault tolerant, but I can't get the funds for a separate storage machine, nor expensive hardware RAID solutions, so I would like to use some software RAID (lvm/mdadm, most likely). How can this be implemented? My only idea so far would be to create a VM which has the storage adapter as passthrough, puts some software RAID on top of the disks and then presents the resulting volumes "back" to the ESXi host which then creates a datastore from which other VMs get their storage presented. This does seem kind of round-about, do I have any better options? From my research, passthrough seems to come with quite a few drawbacks, such as no suspend/resume etc.

  Have been readign around on IErrorHandler and want to go the config route. so, I have read the following in an attempt to implement it. MSDN Keyvan Nayyeri blog about the type defintion Rory Primrose Blog I have got it to compile and from the various errors i have fixed it seems like WCF is actually loading the error handler. My problem is that the exception that i am throwing to handle in the error handler doesn;t get the exception passed to it. My service implementation simply calls a method on another class that throws ArgumentOutOfRangeException - however this exception never gets handled by the handler. • Complex relationship between tables in NHibernate

  Hi all, I'm writing a Fluent NHibernate mapping for a legacy Oracle database. The challenge is that the tables have composite primary keys. If I were at total freedom, I would redesign the relationships and auto-generate primary keys, but other applications must write to the same database and read from it, so I cannot do it. These are the two tables I'll focus on: Example data Trips table: 1, 10:00, 11:00 ... 1, 12:00, 15:00 ... 1, 16:00, 19:00 ... 2, 12:00, 13:00 ... 3, 9:00, 18:00 ... Faults table: 1, 13:00 ... 1, 23:00 ... 2, 12:30 ... In this case, vehicle 1 made three trips and has two faults. The first fault happened during the second trip, and the second fault happened while the vehicle was resting. Vehicle 2 had one trip, during which a fault happened. Constraints Trips of the same vehicle never overlap. So the tables have an optional one-to-many relationship, because every fault either happens during a trip or it doesn't. If I wanted to join them in SQL, I would write: select ... from Faults left outer join Trips on Faults.VehicleId = Trips.VehicleId and Faults.FaultTime between Trips.TripStartTime and Trips.TripEndTime and then I'd get a dataset where every fault appears exactly once (one-to-many as I said). Note that there is no Vehicles table, and I don't need one. But I did create a view that contains all VehicleIds from both tables, so I can use it as a junction table. What am I actually looking for? The tables are huge because they cover years of data, and every time I only need to fetch a range of a few hours. So I need a mapping and a criteria that will run something like the following SQL underneath: select ... from Faults left outer join Trips on Faults.VehicleId = Trips.VehicleId and Faults.FaultTime between Trips.TripStartTime and Trips.TripEndTime where Faults.FaultTime between :p0 and :p1 Do you have any ideas how to achieve it? Note 1: Currently the application shouldn't write to the database, so persistence is not a must, although if the mapping supports persistence, it may help at some point in the future. • Replace Infinite loop in Flex

  Hello, I want to access a webservice:getMonitorData() , on creationcomplete and returns an array, in an infinite loop so that the getIndex0.text is updated each time. Flex is not able to handle an infinite loop and gives a timeout error 1502. If I run the for loop until i<2000 or so it works fine. How can replace the loop so that my webservice is accessed continiously and the result is shown in getIndex0.text. • How to fix: faulting application w3wp.exe?

  In the Event Viewer: Source: Application Error Category: 100 Event ID: 1000 Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4480, fault address 0x000000000000dd50. This error is happening on my background-app server (not web server). It's happening every 3-5 minutes. What's the problem in laymen's terms? And then the solution? :) Or if this isn't enough info, how can I troubleshoot?

• Probelm After Changing password in ubuntu

  Hi All, I am using ubuntu system which uses openldap for user login authentication. For changing my login password i used "$sudo passwd" and changed it. (of course the password given is same as old one). Then onwards when i trying to run "apt" command it showing command not found. and for some other programs it showing segmentation fault. Can any one tell me why I am facing issue and how to solve this.
