  • best way to save a web page

    Hi all I have tried many ways/software to save a web page (html, mht, doc, pdf). My favorite software was an addon for browsers from Omnipage (OCR). What i like about this is that it prints the whole page (continuously) and it doesn't write the http path and page number on the footer of every page, which i find very annoying. Does anyone know a software like this one (freeware or not) PS I tried CutePDF

  • Blank Mail from PHP application

    Problem: Blank email from PHP web application. Confirmed: App works in Linux, has various problems in Windows server environment. Blank emails are the last remaining problem. PHP Version 5.2.6 on the server I'm a librarian implementing a PHP based web application to help students complete their assignments.I have installed this application before on a Linux based free web host and had no problems. Email is controlled by two files, email_functions.php and email.php. While email can be sent, all that is sent is a blank email. My IT department is an ASP only shop, so I can get little to no help there. I also cannot install additional libraries like PHPmail or Swiftmailer.   • $.fadeTo/fadeOut() operations on Table Rows in IE fail

    Here’s a a small problem that one of customers ran into a few days ago: He was playing around with some of the sample code I’ve put out for one of my simple jQuery demos which deals with providing a simple pulse behavior plug-in: $.fn.pulse = function(time) { if (!time) time = 2000; // *** this == jQuery object that contains selections $(this).fadeTo(time, 0.20, function() { $(this).fadeTo(time, 1); }); return this; } it’s a very simplistic plug-in and it works fine for simple pulse animations. However he ran into a problem where it didn’t work when working with tables – specifically pulsing a table row in Internet Explorer. Works fine in FireFox and Chrome, but IE not so much. It also works just fine in IE as long as you don’t try it on tables or table rows specifically. Applying against something like this (an ASP.NET GridView): var sel = $("#gdEntries>tbody>tr") .not(":first-child") // no header .not(":last-child") // no footer .filter(":even") .addClass("gridalternate"); // *** Demonstrate simple plugin sel.pulse(2000); fails in IE. No pulsing happens in any version of IE. After some additional experimentation with single rows and various ways of selecting each and still failing, I’ve come to the conclusion that the various fade operations in jQuery simply won’t work correctly in IE (any version). So even something as ‘elemental’ as this: var el = $("#gdEntries>tbody>tr").get(0);$(el).fadeOut(2000); is not working correctly. The item will stick around for 2 seconds and then magically disappear. Likewise: sel.hide().fadeIn(5000); also doesn’t fade in although the items become immediately visible in IE. Go figure that behavior out. Thanks to a tweet from red_square and a link he provided here is a grid that explains what works and doesn’t in IE (and most last gen browsers) regarding opacity: http://www.quirksmode.org/js/opacity.html It appears from this link that table and row elements can’t be made opaque, but td elements can. This means for the row selections I can force each of the td elements to be selected and then pulse all of those. Once you have the rows it’s easy to explicitly select all the columns in those rows with .find(“td”). Aha the following actually works: var sel = $("#gdEntries>tbody>tr") .not(":first-child") // no header .not(":last-child") // no footer .filter(":even") .addClass("gridalternate"); // *** Demonstrate simple plugin sel.find("td").pulse(2000); A little unintuitive that, but it works. Stay away from <table> and <tr> Fades The moral of the story is – stay away from TR, TH and TABLE fades and opacity. If you have to do it on tables use the columns instead and if necessary use .find(“td”) on your row(s) selector to grab all the columns. I’ve been surprised by this uhm relevation, since I use fadeOut in almost every one of my applications for deletion of items and row deletions from grids are not uncommon especially in older apps. But it turns out that fadeOut actually works in terms of behavior: It removes the item when the timeout’s done and because the fade is relatively short lived and I don’t extensively test IE code any more I just never noticed that the fade wasn’t happening. Note – this behavior or rather lack thereof appears to be specific to table table,tr,th elements. I see no problems with other elements like <div> and <li> items. Chalk this one up to another of IE’s shortcomings. Incidentally I’m not the only one who has failed to address this in my simplistic plug-in: The jquery-ui pulsate effect also fails on the table rows in the same way. sel.effect("pulsate", { times: 3 }, 2000); and it also works with the same workaround.   • SEO one longer page vs. several targeted subpages?

    We're working on a site and have come to a choice between one long (not too excessive) main page and several subpages. The subpages would have custom metas/titles/h2 tags and the content that corresponds to them. The main page would have all the content and many more inbound links (pagerank) and with longer content encompassing the content we'd put on the shorter pages. Which would be better for seo and traffic in general? Both schemes are very usable to the user although we are a little concerned with duplicate content (the page's header/footer and other elements remain the same)

    There is a (not so) particular kind of shape in Orchard: zones. Functionally, zones are places where other shapes can render. There are top-level zones, the ones defined on Layout, where widgets typically go, and there are local zones that can be defined anywhere. These local zones are what you target in placement.info. Creating a zone is easy because it really is just an empty shape. In the Layout template where we are working, the Model is the Layout shape itself, so Model.Header is really creating a new Header shape under Layout, or getting a reference to it if it already exists. The Zone function is then called on that object, which is equivalent to calling Display. In other words, you could have just written the following to get the exact same effect: @Display(Model.Header) The Zone helper function only exists to make the intent very explicit. Now here's something interesting: while this works in the Layout template, you can also make it work from any deeper-nested template and still create top-level zones. The difference is that wherever you are, Model is not the layout anymore so you need to access it in a different way: @Display(WorkContext.Layout.Header) This is still doing the exact same thing as above.     I'm creating a web-based report. It will be a single column, no menu. Just titles, graphs, tables. Maybe a header and a footer. I've scoured the internet for a free, open source (or just 'free') CSS 'template' that will turn my grotty looking HTML page in to a nicely colored page with good fonts. Something simple I can just drop in. Is there such a thing? My issue is that I'm not a designer, I just want to pop something in and have it work and look good.

    For the last 2 days I'm trying to find the reason why my previous setup, which was a link to my websites Facebook pages doesn't work anymore. I assume that I mistakenly changed something in the Facebook developer area, but I can't remember what it was. The bottom linked my previously to the Facebook.com/company-page, now the same Bottom links me just to Facebook.com. I guess I saw some redirect in the tab, but I'm not sure since it's too fast changing to Facebook.com. The original link in the footer is correct : <a href="http://facebook.com/company-page " target="_blank" class="facebook_ico"></a>. Any ideas?

  • CSS tags/media queries for chrome on iPhone [migrated]

    So Chrome is here for iOS.. Hoorah! However now due to the different screen layout (no footer toolbar) it messes with the ability to make a perfect layout for iphone web pages. I have a site for my company that resided perfectly inside an iphone screen, no scrolling required, it looked like an app. However now that chrome is here (and wildly popular) with its different screen layout, sites that were sized for iphone safari now look odd. Is there, or will there be, ways to isolate out chrome from safari and give them different CSS?

    For the last 2 days I've been trying to find the reason why the link to my website's Facebook page doesn't work anymore. The link went to facebook.com/company-page, but now redirects to facebook.com. I assume that I mistakenly changed something in the Facebook developer area, but I can't remember what it was. I guess I saw some redirect in the tab, but I'm not sure since it's changing too fast to facebook.com. The original link in the footer is correct: <a href="http://facebook.com/company-page " target="_blank" class="facebook_ico"></a> Any ideas?

  • Using table-styled divs instead of tables

    I was referred here from stackoverflow as my question was apparently too broad. I'm working on a template, and I know using CSS is preferred over HTML tables for positioning... But, is it acceptable to get the best of both worlds and use table-like styles on my divs? For example: display: table; This not only helps solve the sticky footer problem, but it also avoids the pains associated with using floats. Somehow it feels dirty, but I can't logically explain why because it works without any "tricks" or ugly hacks, which is how it should be, right? Is this technically incorrect, or does it ultimately boil down to just a matter of opinion? ...Thoughts?

    I'm sure most webmasters have recived a mail like this: Creating [insert item here] is not working! When you check it out there is no general problem with the function but rather the user has discovered an edge case. Almost every mail I get is like this and in the long run it gets a bit annoying to always have to ask the user for more information. Is there anything I can do to get my users provide more useful feedback? Right now I have a mailto: for the webmaster mail in the page footer. I was thinking of changing this so that they have to report through a form on the site. Anyone got any experience with this? Do you get better/more reports by having a feedback form instead of giving the users the email?

Are there any means to bring these blackhat companies to pushame to damage their reputation?

    I was wandering seeing as Google and others keep trying to get more and more 'human' in terms of rating whats good and whats spam, is it known if they take into account the size of a heading ie. an thats font size is 40px is going to speak allot more to the user than a thats font size is 14px.. similarly does placement factor ? ie. a 300 word article at the bottom of a landing page (not in the footer but bellow the useful content) would just be there for seo purposes. i know they look at if your doing things like text-indent:-9999px; and white text on a white background, but what about these more border line practices that both have legitimate uses but also the possibility to be spammy

  • Very few visitors on Analytics: incorrect setting?

    it's quite a long time Analytics is making me crazy: I have a 2 years old website, started with Aruba (an Italian provider) and then transfered on Hostgator. It's a blog Wordpress + MyBB forum, and on both the platforms I've the Analytics code in the footer. The problem is that the stats on Analytics are simply ridiculous compared to the numbers reported by the Aruba (before) and Hostgator (then). I think that the numbers of Aruba/Hostgator are correct, simply because just the daily users connected on the forum is higher than the Analytics numbers. I know it's a really confused request, but maybe you can help me to understand what's the problem.

    No clue on a title for this, someone feel free to suggest an edit. I have a client that has a website. He owns around 200 domains, and wants each domain to contain content from the main website. The header, footer, and navigation bars will remain the same for each domain, but the actual page content will vary (obviously duplicate content issues, open to suggestions) He wants each individual page to be its own separate domain, rather than a url within the main domain. (page1.com page2.com etc - NOT site.com/page1.html, however the file is actually hosted at site.com/page1.html - all links will direct to site.com/whatever accordingly) What would be the best place to start reading / learning on how to do this, and what concerns/considerations should be taken into mind?

  • is it ok to have 2 sitemaps on 1 website?

    Do I have to have a sitemap page on my index page for bots to read it or can I just have it anywhere on my server? I have a phpbb/wordpress integration and I need 2 sitemaps mods for each one (or I need to have them somehow integrated together into one xml sitemap). Is this possible? Whats my best option? I would have the phpbb one something like this: http://www.example.com/phpbb/sitemap.html and the wordpress one something like this: http://www.example.com/wordpress/sitemap.html and then I would submit both off..but not have the links on my footer to confuse anyone.., the sitemaps would strictly be for search engines. Is this a good idea? what are you thoughts?

    I do really hate repeater. I was more a GridView lover but after 3.5 be born, I prefer ListView.  The first problem with Repeater is paging. You will need to write code to handle paging. Second common problem is empty data template. Have a look at this:             if (rptMyRepeater.Items.Count < 1)             {                 if (e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.Footer)                 {                     Label lblFooter = (Label)e.Item.FindControl("lblEmpty");                     lblFooter.Visible = true;                 }             }   I found the above code is usefull if you need to show something like "There is no record" is your data source has no records. Although the ListView has a template.   If you combine ListView with a DataPager, you will be in heaven as it is sorting the paging for you without writing code.
