• How can I create an email newsletter by taking objects from a database?

  Well, I'm trying to create a newsletter, that will send emails to users in a database. The newsletter itself would draw "events" and other activities from a database. Whats the best way to take that list, and put them in an email? I was thinking about putting them into an html page, then sending an html email, but not all emails support html(like school email). What would your guys recommend? Could you point me to some good resources? Also, this is for a school project, so I cant use any open source type stuff, unfortunately :(

• IIS website is sending multiple content-type headers for zip files

  We have a problem with an IIS5 server. When certain users/browsers click to download .zip files, binary gibberish text sometimes renders in the browser window. The desired behavior is for the file to either download or open with the associated zip application. Initially, we suspected that the wrong content-type header was set on the file. The IIS tech confirmed that .zip files were being served by IIS with the mime-type "application/x-zip-compressed". However, an inspection of the HTTP packets using Wireshark reveals that requests for zip files return two Content-Type headers. Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8 Content-Type: application/x-zip-compressed Any idea why IIS is sending two content-type headers? This doesn't happen for regular HTML or images files. It does happen with ZIP and PDF. Is there a particular place we can ask the IIS tech to look? Or is there a configuration file we can examine?

• CURL on PHP 5.2 works in CLI but not in IIS

  I have a Windows 2003 Server running IIS with php 5.2.8, I'm trying to use CURL, and it works in CLI mode (if i execute php.exe) but it does not seem to be registered when running under IIS. The output of PHP info in both CLI and IIS show the same 'Loaded Configuration File', but under IIS it does not give the CURL info box. c:\program files\php\php.exe -i shows ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... curl cURL support => enabled cURL Information => libcurl/7.16.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 phpinfo() ... Loaded Configuration File => C:\Program Files\PHP\php.ini ... NOTE: This server also runs php 5.3 in c:\program files\php-5.3.0 and CURL does properly work with that installation.

  Hi - I am in the process of migrating an existing webserver running IIS 6 to IIS 7. I have setup the new websites on the new server but cant seem to test them as once I have entered the domain name when I selec t "browse" from within IIS 7 I get the site on my original server. How can I test the configuration of my new sites on my new server before migrating the domain names (eg updating the DNS records etc.)? Any help much appreciated.

  Hi all, I'm new to .Net and IIS. I've created a simple RESTful Web Service in VS2008 and .net 3.5 framework using WCF. I've tested it well with F5 debugging in VS(seems it is auto deployed on Windows Service). Now I want to deploy it on my IIS server so that I can use it remotely. But I cannot find any guide for this. I manually deployed my service folder just as an ASP.net site. But seems it does not work(keep showing 401 error). Can anyone tell me how to deploy it to IIS? It contains a simple GET method and I hope it can be accessed by anomynous clients (because the host IP is 192.168..). I have a web.config file, a .dll and .pdb under /bin folder, a Global.asax and .svc file for my service. The IIS server is on the same machine. Thanks a million.

I am using the Castle DefaultServiceHostFactory to provide the service to IIS in the .svc file. However, I need to programmatically specify certain end points and behaviours and I do not know how to retrieve the current ServiceHost. Is this be possible, or should I just look at other methods of compression independent of IIS?

• Intermittent issue - IIS offering to donwload ASPX file instead of executing

  We're getting an intermittent problem with the homepage of our site when IIS will suddenly start offering to download the ASPX file instead of executing it. It happens about once a month, on a random basis. If I open the file in Notepad and re-save it (without making a single change to the code), IIS starts executing the script as normal and doesn't offer the download any more. I can't get my head round this, considering that we can't reproduce the problem. Also, I can't really play with it and test anything when the problem occurs as this is the homepage of the site and needs fixing asap. Any ideas what could be causing this? Files are written to the server over Filezilla FTP. Looks like the homepage is the only page affected. Server is Windows Server 2003, IIS 6.0 with all the latest patches (we actually run two of them, load balanced, and the problem can occur on either server on a random basis). Can't see anything in the Event logs or IIS log.

• IIS 7 - floats returning with commas instead of periods

  I'm having trouble reading rows with float values, because these rows return for example 12,34 instead of 12.34 as it should. I suspect this is because both my IIS and SQL server is on a Norwegian Windows Server 2008. So I went to the regional settings and customized the default decimal symbol, then restarted my servers. The output in the database now shows the period decimal symbol, but when I request it through the IIS server it comes comma separated (the IIS server is on another computer, but that also has the default decimal symbol set to period). The IIS server is IIS7 and the SQL Server is 2008 Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'd like to host a WCF web service in IIS. The service should keep a certain set of data all the time, it must never be lost. My colleague told me this is impossible because IIS closes down the service after a certain time (I assume without any activity). Is that true? How do I prevent that behavior? It has been working fine for ages, and now suddenly has this error in Firefox: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) I have googled and found no clear explanation.   Hi We use Kentico CMS and I've exchanged emails with them about a web garden deployment. We have a single site running on a server with 8 cpu cores. In line with Kentico's advice, we have not altered the application pool web garden setting from the default i.e. it is set to a maximum number of worker processes of 1. Our experience is that the site only uses one of the cpu cores - the others are idling. When I emailed them about this, their response was that the OS/IIS would handle this and use other cores as necessary even though the application pool only has a single worker process. Now, I've a lot of respect for the guys at Kentico, but this doesn't seem right to me? Surely, if we want to use all cores, we need to permit eight worker processes (and implement session state storage in SQL server)? Many thanks Tony

  On a new installation of IIS 7.5 I have setup Windows Authentication on my Intranet. The providers I have used are 'NTLM' and negotiate in that order. This works fine in IE and Firefox but in chrome I get the following This web page is not available The web page at http://mysite.com/myintranet.php might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. Error 338 (net::ERR_INVALID_AUTH_CREDENTIALS): Unknown error. I've tried looking online for a solution without any success. I'm running the latest version of Chrome 21.0.1180.60

In general it works but 2 errors are displayed in Hudson in the main configuration page called "Manage Hudson" (only if I connect through the reverse proxy): Your container doesn't use UTF-8 to decode URLs.   I am trying to set up a development environment for our web server. I would like all emails that are relayed by the server go to a specific mailbox, regardless of who they were sent to. For example, some application on the server sends an email to [email protected]. I want that email to go to [email protected]. Is that possible to do with IIS/Virtual SMTP? Is there some other way of doing this? I don't have exchange server running, if that makes a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

  I had been practicing ASP on my local machine.. I just wanted to change the TCP port address to 8080 and that is what I did, since then the URL "http://localhost/" is showing PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED, and technical reason being shown is : "You have attempted to execute a CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory that does not allow programs to be executed." I tried to change back the TCP port address to 80, (which is default) but its not making any difference. What should I do now, to make localhost to work as before ? When I create a virtual directory for the same path "C:/InetPub/wwwroot" then it works but with this URL "http://localhost/virualname/filename.asp" .. where as "http://localhost/filename.asp" throws error, as mentioned above. • Find out what fields are available to IIS 7 Advanced Logging from Modules

  You can install the Advanced Logging module for IIS 7. Once installed you have the option to define new fields from several different sources. One of those sources is other modules. What I am unable to figure out is how to get a list of the fields that the other modules 'publish'. There a boat load of modules installed by default and I have to imagine they are publishing some data I would care to know about (hopefully UrlRoutingModule publishes what I'm specifically looking for). Also as an aside if you know how to or know where good documentation on writing .net HttpModules that publish custom fields I'd love to see/hear about it.

  I have small website hosted on our WS 2008 R2 server using IIS 7. I can access our website from anywhere in the world using: www.ourwebsite.co.nz But from any local computer on our internal network I can only access the website using: http://ourwebsite.co.nz Our employees are constantly asking why they cant just use www.ourwebsite.co.nz I'm not sure what info to provide. I presume that because the wesbite correctly functions from outside the local network that I have correctly setup our Web DNS A records at our domain host. And the problem may lie with our local DNS configuration.

  Hi, My system is Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. I need to run a site which is allowed to do some administrative tasks. I have created an AD user account and added it to all the required groups. The site's application pool runs with custom identity set to this AD account. This works, however some tasks fail with 'Access is denied'. I have found that it was caused by UAC (with UAC disabled everything works ok). So my question is - is it possible to run an application pool in elevated mode without globally disabling UAC? Possibly just disabling UAC just for this one account.

  I have a web site in IIS 6 with directory security set to Require secure channel (SSL) and Require 128-bit encryption. Also, the Client certificates setting is set to "Ignore client certificates". When I hit https://servername/resource in Internet Explorer and Chrome , I am prompted for a certificate. I can cancel the prompt, and the resource will load, but I don't want to see this prompt at all. I looked at the virtual directories and resources within the web site, and they all have the ignore client certificates setting on. Could there be another setting, perhaps in the metbase, that is overriding the web site's directory security settings?

• MySQL query (over SSL) fails in IIS 7 using default AppPool identity

  I am trying to run a website locally in Windows 7 under IIS 7. I have the AppPool configured to use "Classic" mode, but connecting to a MySQL DB that requires SSL fails. If I change the identity to my user account it works perfectly. It fails when using the default "ApplicationPoolIdentity" account. Is there something I'm missing somewhere? Why would running a MySQL query over SSL fail for certain user accounts? Update: This is the exception that the MySQL Connector is throwing: "Reading from the stream has failed. Attempted to read past the end of the stream."
