• Why can't the Adobe Flash player send key strokes it doesn't handle to the browse in which it is run

  I'm a heavy web user that uses the address bar constantly while browsing the web. I often use Ctrl + T to open a new tab or Ctrl + D to move focus to the address bar so it is very annoying that these shortcut keys do not work when a Flash object has focus on the active browser tab. I would happily give up all keyboard handling in the Flash Player in exchange for having keystrokes sent to the browser. In fact, as someone who has worked in software development for over 15 years it is hard to believe that Flash doesn't pass common browser shortcut keys to the browser or have an option to do so. So my question is this: Am I missing some option, some Flash shortcut key or some Firefox add-on that will alleviate my suffering?

• Windows 7 EFI Partition Deleted

  I converted my Windows 7 GPT disk to dynamic, which resulted in it being unable to boot. So I used EaseUs Partition Master on my second Win 7 installation to convert the disk back to basic. Now, I have one partition, which is my C: drive, and I can't figure out how to recovery my EFI partition. I no longer see the "Windows" entry in my EFI boot menu. The Windows 7 repair on the install DVD doesn't see my installation. Please let me know how to restore the EFI partition.

• When DNS doesn't cache

  We've had some odd DNS problems over the past couple of days that I don't fully understand. Some of our DNS names stopped resolving for some of our customers due to some 'unknown' server reconfiguration at our DNS provider. The problem seemed to be intermittent i.e. stopped working and started working within a few minutes over a couple of days. I'm no expert on DNS, but I'd have expected DNS caches to prevent this sort of thing from happening - when we need to change an IP address for a DNS record, it can take 24 hours to propogate, so how can our DNS provider be breaking name resolution intermittently for our customers so easily? Shouldn't the DNS caches kick in here? We had a similar problem about a month ago when one of their nameservers 'decided to reload the DNS database from scratch' - this broke our name resolution too. Again, why didn't the caches satisfy the name resolution requests. Any guesses would be appreciated. John

• Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

  I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

• Surface (Pro) Soft Keyboard + Hardware Keyboard Issue

  When I got my Surface Pro 2, I loved it, and everything seemed to work flawlessly, until, wait for it, windows updates... The issue that I am having is the following, I primarily use the TC (TypeCover), as the Pro is an out-of-office laptop replacement for me, that I can still use to do whatever I need, but there are times when I will flip the cover, and use the system in tablet mode. The problem is that even when the TC is attached, any text field I click on, causes the OSK (on screen keyboard) to appear, as if I was running the system in tablet mode. As soon as I press a single button on the TC, the OSK is dismissed. When I first got the system, this was NOT the case, and it functioned as it should, where the OSK will only appear if the TC was not present. The biggest problem that I am having is the fact that the OSK causes the windows to be resized. Maximized windows will be shrunk, and stretched to their previous state, however a window that is not maximized will stay in its shrunken state, after the OSK has been dismissed. Below are pictures that show what is happening. Has anyone else experienced this issue? And is there any way to fix it? As you might imagine, having spent a pretty penny on a device like this, it it quite an annoying bug that needs fixing. I have been dealing with this issue for about 3 months now.

Basic workflow of events: Customer sends email to [email protected] from [email protected] ACME administrator receives notification and can moderate email After moderation administrator confirm an email and send it to [email protected] John answears to [email protected] Before the email is send it is moderated again by ACME administrator What is important, that this functionality is easy to do with some CMS/CMF systems. • Blade servers for vm?

  We're using VMware on a normal rack mounted server and considering getting another. I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers?   I set up a Microsoft Exchange account on my iOS device to sync my Gmail contacts. But Microsoft Exchange is ignoring phone numbers that are labeled as 'iPhone' or 'main'. For example, John Smith: On Mac and Gmail: John Smith main: 123-334-1212 home: 123-330-1002 work: 123-330-8211 iPhone: 123-778-5556 On iOS device (via Exchange sync): John Smith home: 123-330-1002 work: 123-330-8211 I'd like to sync my contacts from my Mac to iCloud and Gmail, but you can't do both: Is there a solution to sync iOS and Gmail contacts without using Exchange?   After days of trying all sorts of tutorials I finally found a simple solution (not necessary the best) for a functional ubuntu mail server: sudo aptitude install postfix next type sudo dpkg-reconfigure postfix and configure like this: Internet Site yourdomain.com john (type your ubuntu user) yourdomain.com, localhost.localdomain, localhost No 127.0.0.0/8 [::ffff:127.0.0.0]/104 [::1]/192.168.0.1/24 (192.198.0.1 replace with your server ip address) 0 + all next install mail-stack-delivery sudo aptitude install mail-stack-delivery At this point you have a working mail server. Next, I configured SquirrelMail and start sending and receaving mail. This configuration worked with both Apache and Nginx.

  (i'm just trying to find what am I missing...) Assuming John have a clear text message , he can create a regular hash ( like md5 , or sha256) and then encrypt the message. John can now send Paul the message + its (clear text)hash and Paul can know if the message was altered. ( decrypt and then compare hashes). Even if an attacker can change the encrpyted data ( without decrypt) - - when paul will open the message - and recalc the hash - it wont generate the same hash as the one john sent him. so why do we need hash by key ?

• syntax error: unknown user 'munin' in statoverride file

  Server running Ubuntu 12.04 lts I installed munin the other day on a server. I decided later to remove it with apt-get. I noticed that not everything was removed from the installation so manually removed the munin web directory and also removed the munin user-name and group from the sever. However I have just now tried to run apt-get upgrade which is now returning an error: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: syntax error: unknown user 'munin' in statoverride file E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) I am now out of my depth. What does this mean? Google results have not really been helpful. Can anyone help? Thanks, John

• Mass remove passwords from rar archives

  Is there a way to (I'm using WinRAR; demo, but I'm willing to change it to whatever is needed) mass remove passwords from a bunch of files ? Problem description: for reasons unknown to me, some archiving was done for two-and-something years in RAR format, and all archives have passwords. I have a list of them, them all being similar (mostly something like John-03, John-04, John-05 ... e.g. name-month ...) but I need to manipulate the files at large, and it is a real problem removing and or dearchiving all those files, while entering passwords manually. What would be my best options concerning ? Ideally, I'm looking for some kind of archiver which tries out a predefined list of passwords, and asks only if non of them cracks the safe. Afaik, WinRAR has no such feature.

• Automate configuration change on Outlook 2007

  I am migrating a bunch of mailboxes to google apps. Each user owns several mailboxes each serving different domains (john has [email protected], [email protected], and so on...) Currently, those accounts are hosted on (edit:NOT an exchange server) an old SMTP/POP server we want to replace, and I need to edit their outlook 2007 configuration to change the pop, smtp and password parameters. The hard way to do it is to connect to each outlook session and edit the parameters manually. I want to avoid that. Because that represents over 700 accounts spread between 40 users... :'( How can I automate this configuration change ? In the active directory ? Using a PRF file ? note: I'm a linux sysadmin with very little knowledge of windows's black magic.

The proxy server could not handle the request GET /. • How do MaxSpareServers work in Apache?

  I've scoured the web but I can't find out what MaxSpareServers are in Apache MPM prefork.. The MaxSpareServers directive sets the desired maximum number of idle child server processes. An idle process is one which is not handling a request. If there are more than MaxSpareServers idle, then the parent process will kill off the excess processes. Great, but what causes a spareserver to be created? More importantly, when does a spare server go away? I understand that minspareservers are created gradually after the server is started.. How do maxspareservers relate to maxclients? Basically I'm at a bit of a loss on how best to configure Apache.. there's a lot of documentation out there but it isn't that clear. Thanks, John.

• Restoring Subversion repositories from backup

  Hi, I had to restore a subversion server from a backup image taken the previous night. Everything worked fine after the restore except for one repository. A working copy had been committed on the server after the latest backup, so this working copy had newer files than the restored repository. I tried to commit the files using tortoise, but SVN didn't recognize that the files on the working copy were newer than those in the repository. I'm using Subversion Server 1.6.5 on Windows 2003 Server and TortoiseSVN 1.6.8 64 bit on a Win7 64 bit client. Thanks, John

• Prevent a program from creating files in a users home directory

  I run an engineering program for class, Quartus 2. The issue i am having is that every time i launch the program, it creates 10 bitmap files in my home directory. This is not so much of a problem, it just makes my OCD hurt :( I can delete them without affecting anything, but every time the program is launched it recreates them, and there is nothing in the program (that i have found) that stops these files from being created. Is there anything i can do to prevent this program, or any profram from creating files like this in my home folder?

  I want to setup roaming profiles for about 50 users. What is the best way to go about doing this? What are the best practices. I've read about desktops/my Documents being TOO big. How big is too big? We have a few users who keep a lot of media on their machine to listen to throughout the day. I would imagine they have a few gigs of MP3's in their My Documents folder.   I've been digging around for ages but not getting very far so any links or tips would be massively appreciated. I want to create a central "radio station" in my home to stream one playlist to any computers pointing their browser to the ip within my internal network. I have an old mini slave mac mini running ubuntu and was originally thinking I could get php and apache to handle this but then quickly realised that of course, php will serve out streaming independently per connection ie no radio station.   I want to secure the SSH access to my server. One thing I read everywhere is to disable the root user login. To still have access via SSH I created another user via sudo adduser john How can I still do root things with this account? sudo command asks for a password of the user but gives john not in sudoer file. Action will be reported. When I use su I log in as root which I'm going to disable. How can I stil do root things with the normal account john?

• Lotus Notes: Searching email by fields

  I'm using Lotus Notes 8.5.2 in a large corporate deployment. I'm trying to figure out how to search my email in a structured manner, e.g. by specifying criteria on fields. The help seems to suggest that I can use fields in square brackets and a list of operators, e.g. to find all mail where the From field contains John, I'd search for /[From] CONTAINS John However, I can't get this to work - any operator style query I've tried returns zero documents. "Web-style" queries (e.g. typing John into the search dialog) work, but I'd really prefer a way that would let me search more precisely. Potential issues: I'm assuming that the field names can be taken from the list of things I see when I open a mail and look at its Document Properties. Full text indexing is turned off for my mailbox, and all my attempts to create my own have failed. Does anyone have better information on searching by from/date/subject conditions in Notes?

• word 2010 Macro to name and Save file when opened

  I have a word document template and will be using a hyper link in Excel to access the word file. The issue I need to resolve is making sure once it is opened a message field box is "popped" up asking the user to create a new file name ... (in this case the current date) for each time the file is opened. In the message pop when finished entering in file name they click yes and then the save screen comes up with the path/file type (macro enabled document) and the file name they have already entered in the pop up.. All they should have to do from the save screen is click ok and it saves the file to a certain path/folder on the C drive of the computer. Once they finish typing in their notes they click a active x button to save and close and they are finished. If anyone can help with this it would be fantastic.

• XBMC remote control key repeat

  Those who have used XBMC with a WiFi remote, such as an Android or iOS device with the official XBMC remotes, have probably seen this at one time or another: your remote stops working, when you press a key, that key is repeated very fast. Sometimes you can break the key repeat loop by pressing that same key again. Sometimes (as this particular morning) you can not. This problem has existed for literally years (it even occurs on the old XBOX only builds) but there seems to be no definite explanation as to what is causing it. I am asking for a workaround. (If you Google, you can find threads were people are ridiculed for bringing up this problem, which is one reason I ask here instead of on the official forums. Also the fact that this problem has persisted for so many years.) I am running, right now, XBMCBuntu Live Eden and the latest official iOS remote. Although, I have seen this problem on all combinations of remotes and XBMC versions I have tried over the years, which are many. (XBMC on Windows, Linux, OSX, remotes on Android and iOS.) Link to bug #136 for the Android remote. It's marked as "fixed" as of client version 636, but the problem is seen again in rev 730. Go figure. There is something fundamentally wrong with how keypresses are sent from the various remotes to XBMC, since this problem is seen across time, XBMC versions and iOS/Android.

• Nginx load distribution and multi-domain SSL

  I'm researching into the best methods of two new parts of our infrastructure, hopefully finding a single solution for both. 1) We're currently running a single application server, and we're going to be adding an additional application server and load balance between the two. 2) We handle a few thousand domains across the application server(s), and we're looking to support SSL. The best method i've come across so far is using nginx for it's Load Distribution to serve the requests to the application servers, and for it's SSL support. If a request is using SSL, nginx accepts the request on, terminates SSL and pipes to apache (app servers). Now, that's all good, but i'm yet to figure out how we can let nginx handle multiple domains using SSL. We're potentially looking at using UCC SSL Certs, so we can support 150 domains on a single certificate, with each cert on a single IP. I'm all new to this (My experience is just with physical load balancers and a single domains on SSL), so any advice would be very much appreciated.
