  • Organizing your Data Access Layer

    I am using Entity Framework as my ORM in an ASP.Net application. I have my database already created so ended up generating the entity model from it. What is a good way to organize files/classes in the data access layer. My entity framework model is in a class library and I was planning on adding additional classes per Entity(i.e per database table) and putting all the queries related to those tables in their respective classes. I am not sure if this is a right approach and if it is then where do the queries requiring data from multiple tables go? Am I completely wrong in organizing my files based on entities/tables and should I organize them based on functional areas instead.

  • Pointers to implementing a taxonomy system?

    I am taking part in the development of a PHP CMS (yeah I know you are like, meeh). It is currently using simple tags for tagging content. What I want to do is push the whole thing to using Taxonomy but I am not sure on what to pay attention to, or how to go about structuring the whole vocabularies/terms. I'd love to be able to keep the user interaction close to that of the current simple tags and at the same time allow for more advanced usage by power users. The Drupal and the Wordpress taxonomy systems are being reviewed at the moment and they provide valuable resources. Nevertheless, it could be that someone has some simpler and more appropriate thoughts on this matter.

  • Are areas a good organizational feature, or just extra work?

    Do Areas in ASP.NET MVC end up being a help or just a drag in the end (because of the URL construction)? Would it be better to have subdirectories inside the main Controllers folder? or are there any other options to organizing a project? EDIT For example, this is your average link without Areas: @Html.ActionLink("Home","Index","Home") and this is your average link with Areas: @Html.ActionLink("Home","Index", new { Area = "", Controller = "Home"}) Could the following work? (Main controller with subdirectories) I'm just trying to find out if implementing Areas in a project is worthwhile, because I also read that it can be problematic when using Dependency Injection. And is there an alternative to Areas?

    I've been reading questions and discussions on this website but haven't made an account to start talking or asking anything I had doubts in so please bare with a newbie here. What are specific languages that have are able to make a program that will record, and organize things such as hours, salaries, payments? Also solve business problems, mostly with payments, how much money there will be after interest, taxes and such. Anyway, I've been looking into COBOL, C++, Java, HTML, JavaScript, VB.NET and a couple more. Which ones should I focus on and look into more? I very much appreciate any answers. Thank you.

  • Simulating Google Appengine's Task Queue with Gearman

    One of the characteristics I love most about Google's Task Queue is its simplicity. More specifically, I love that it takes a URL and some parameters and then posts to that URL when the task queue is ready to execute the task. This structure means that the tasks are always executing the most current version of the code. Conversely, my gearman workers all run code within my django project -- so when I push a new version live, I have to kill off the old worker and run a new one so that it uses the current version of the code. My goal is to have the task queue be independent from the code base so that I can push a new live version without restarting any workers. So, I got to thinking: why not make tasks executable by url just like the google app engine task queue? The process would work like this: User request comes in and triggers a few tasks that shouldn't be blocking. Each task has a unique URL, so I enqueue a gearman task to POST to the specified URL. The gearman server finds a worker, passes the url and post data to a worker The worker simply posts to the url with the data, thus executing the task. Assume the following: Each request from a gearman worker is signed somehow so that we know it's coming from a gearman server and not a malicious request. Tasks are limited to run in less than 10 seconds (There would be no long tasks that could timeout) What are the potential pitfalls of such an approach? Here's one that worries me: The server can potentially get hammered with many requests all at once that are triggered by a previous request. So one user request might entail 10 concurrent http requests. I suppose I could have a single worker with a sleep before every request to rate-limit. Any thoughts?

    I am developing Rails v2.3 app with MySQL database and mysql2 gem. I faced a weird situation which is about changing the environment in rake task. (all my setting and configurations for environment and database are correct, no problem for that.) Here is my simple story : I have a rake task like following: namespace :db do task :do_something => :environment do #1. run under 'development' environment my_helper.run_under_development_env #2. change to 'custom' environment RAILS_ENV='custom' Rake::Task['db:create'] Rake::Task['db:migrate'] #3. change back to 'development' environment RAILS_ENV='development' #4. But it still run in 'customer' environment, why? my_helper.run_under_development_env end end The rake task is quite simple, what it does is: 1. Firstly, run a method from my_helper under "development" environment 2. Then, change to "custom" environment and run db:create and db:migrate until now, everything is fine, the environment did change to "custom" 3. Then, change it back again to "development" environment 4. run helper method again under "development" environment But, though I have changed the environment back to "development" in step 3, the last method still run in "custom" environment, why? and how to get rid of it? --- P.S. --- I have also checked a post with the similar situation here, and tried to use the solution there like (in step 2): ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection('custom') Rake::Task['db:create'] Rake::Task['db:migrate'] to change the database connection instead of changing environment but, the db:create and db:migrate will still run under "development" database, though the linked post said it should run for "custom" database... weird

  • Help with java executors: wait for task termination.

    I need to submit a number of task and then wait for them until all results are available. Each of them adds a String to a Vector (that is synchronized by default). Then I need to start a new task for each result in the Vector but I need to do this only when all the previous tasks have stopped doing their job. I want to use Java Executor, in particular I tried using Executors.newFixedThreadPool(100) in order to use a fixed number of thread (I have a variable number of task that can be 10 or 500) but I'm new with executors and I don't know how to wait for task termination. This is something like a pseudocode of what my program needs to do: EecutorService e = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(100); while(true){ /*do something*/ for(...){ <start task> } <wait for all task termination> for each String in result{ <start task> } <wait for all task termination> } I can't do a e.shutdown because I'm in a while(true) and I need to reuse the executorService... Can you help me? Can you suggest me a guide/book about java executors??

  • Algorithm for optimally choosing actions to perform a task

    There are two data types: tasks and actions. An action costs a certain time to complete, and a set of tasks this actions consists of. A task has a set of actions, and our job is to choose one of them. So: class Task { Set<Action> choices; } class Action { float time; Set<Task> dependencies; } For example the primary task could be "Get a house". The possible actions for this task: "Buy a house" or "Build a house". The action "Build a house" costs 10 hours and has the dependencies "Get bricks" and "Get cement", etcetera. The total time is the sum of all the times of the actions required to perform. We want to choose actions such that the total time is minimal. Note that the dependencies can be diamond shaped. For example "Get bricks" could require "Get a car" (to transport the bricks) and "Get cement" would also require a car. Even if you do "Get bricks" and "Get cement" you only have to count the time it takes to get a car once. Note also that the dependencies can be circular. For example "Money" - "Job" - "Car" - "Money". This is no problem for us, we simply select all of "Money", "Job" and "Car". The total time is simply the sum of the time of these 3 things. Mathematical description: Let actions be the chosen actions. valid(task) = ?action ? task.choices. (action ? actions ? ?tasks ? action.dependencies. valid(task)) time = sum {action.time | action ? actions} minimize time subject to valid(primaryTask)

  • Avoiding duplication in setting properties on the task in Rake tasks

    I have a bunch of rake building tasks. They each have unique input / output properties, but the majority of the properties I set on the tasks are the same each time. Currently I'm doing that via simple repetition like this: task :buildThisModule => "bin/modules/thisModule.swf" mxmlc "bin/modules/thisModule.swf" do |t| t.input = "src/project/modules/ThisModule.as" t.prop1 = value1 t.prop2 = value2 ... (And many more property=value sets that are the same in each task) end task :buildThatModule => "bin/modules/thatModule.swf" mxmlc "bin/modules/thatModule.swf" do |t| t.input = "src/project/modules/ThatModule.as" t.prop1 = value1 t.prop2 = value2 ... (And many more property=value sets that are the same in each task) end In my usual programming headspace I'd expect to be able to break out the population of the recurring task properties to a re-usable function. Is there a rake analogy for this? Some way I can have a single function where the shared properties are set on any task?     After googeling for ages, and reading some stuff about async task in books. I made a my first program with an async task in it. Only to find out, that i can only start one task. I want to run the task more then once. This is where i found out that that doesn't seem to work. to be a little bit clearer, here are some parts of my code: InitFunction(var); This is the Task itself public async Task InitFunction(string var) { _VarHandle = await _AdsClient.GetSymhandleByNameAsync(var); _Data = await _AdsClient.ReadAsync<T>(_VarHandle); _AdsClient.AddNotificationAsync<T>(_VarHandle, AdsTransmissionMode.OnChange, 1000, this); } This works like a charm when i execute the task only once.. But is there a possibility to run it multiple times. Something like this?     I am in charge of a small office network that has < 10 users. I want to be able to offer them access to the network from their home internet connections. At the moment we have a regular ADSL-router-firewall to provide local network access and a fixed IP address. I know there are enterprise-level VPN solutions, but these obviously won't be available to us because of the cost and complexity. What small-scale solutions are around that you could recommend, what would we need to deploy on the client side, and what would the clients need to do to access the VPN? (2)/references (3)/technical_references (3)/gov_regulations (3)/data_sources (3)/books (3)/topic_based (each area of my expertise has a folder with references in them) (2)/business_contacts (3)/contacts.xls (file contains all my contacts) (2)/banking (3)/banking.xls (contains a list of all paid and unpaid invoices as well as some cool stats) (3)/quicken (to do my taxes and yada yada) (4)/year (2)/education (courses I've taken (3)/webinars (3)/seminars (3)/online_courses (2)/publications (includes the publications I've made (3)/publication_id We're mostly 5 people working together part-time on this thing. Since this is a very structured approach, I find it really difficult to remember what I've done on previous projects and go back and forth easily. What are your suggestions on improving my processes? I'm open to closed and open source software (as long as the price isn't too high). I also want to implement a system where I can save most of the projects online to increase collaboration and efficiency and reduce bandwidth especially on document editing. Imagine emailing a document back and forth 5-10 times a day.

    I'm trying to deploy windows 7 with SCCM 2012 R2 to physical desktops and laptops. But the task sequence keeps failing, no matter what I try. When I try it on a VM it works fine. However, when I try it on a physical computer it fails. So I think it has something to do with drivers, but I already tried both the "auto apply drivers" + wmi query for model method, and also the "apply driver package" + wmi query for model method. In the link below I added a zip file, containing two other zip files. One is a captured log from a failed osd on a desktop, the other is the export of my task sequence. Download zip-file with log and TS If anyone could resolve the issue, or share their own task sequence for such a task (pure sccm 2012 (R2), no MDT), that would be great.

    I have a maintenance plan setup for a databases on a server. As part of the backup is a Maintenance Cleanup Task. SQL Version 2008 The task that 'succeeds' is setup as: Delete backup files Correct folder (same address as the backup task) File extension: bak (NOT .bak) Delete files older than: 20 Hour(s) I have other similar cleanup tasks that occur in the same maintenance plan which work fine. This plan has worked fine in the past, I just noticed that last night it reported 'success' and the rest of the plan continued, however the file from 2 days ago still remains. I have checked similar questions such as this question, and this is not the case as my maintenance task worked fine two days ago and for the past several weeks:

  • Share Exchange Calendar Outside Organization

    I'm trying to figure out the best way to meet a user's (Corp-A-User) request to share their calendar with someone at another company (Corp-B-User). We're running Microsoft SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007 and SharePoint. The remote user is running Exchange, version unknown. Corp-A-User wants to give the Corp-B-User the ability to create appointments on Corp-A-User's calendar. This will naturally require sharing of Free/Busy information. Corp-A-User naturally lacks the vision to seen ANY problem with giving Corp-B-User full access to their calendar. But, I see the problems with that and would prefer that Corp-B-User have only the ability to see Free/Busy and create appointments. Most of the external publishing options that I have thought of, such as WebDav, allow displaying a user's calendar, but there are problems with security and the ability to create appointments. Right now, I'm thinking the cleanest solution would be to use a Google calendar along with Google Calendar Sync for the two user's Outlook clients. But, I'm not sure if there isn't a better way and I hate teh idea of pushing a corporate calendar up to Google. Not to mention the issues likely to pop up from the multiple sync paths. Does any one have a good solution for this scenario that would be willing to share what they use?

This is a specific question for OSX. Chrome has a built in task manager under "Tools" to look at the process within Chrome, extremely beneficial in locating a stuck page. What is the similar feature in firefox?     Back in Windows Server 2008 R2, when stand-alone Managed Service Accounts (sMSA) were new, they could not be used to execute scheduled tasks. In Windows Server 2012 however, there is a new type of account called the Group Managed Service Account (gMSA). This type of account is supposedly capable of launching scheduled tasks in the task scheduler on clients & member servers inside of a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain functional level. So far, I have: Established a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain Created a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) Installed the gMSA on a Windows Server 2012 member server And currently I'm having trouble with: Setting a scheduled task to use the gMSA When I attempt to use a gMSA on a scheduled task, I get the error message that says "The object cannot be found" (paraphrased) message. My question is: How do I configure a Scheduled Task to execute using a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA)?

    I have a program that is stuck under the task bar in Windows 7. I cannot click on it because (I think) the click is interpreted as being on the task bar and not on the program. How do I recover it? The program does not show up when I alt-tab through all of the programs. It also does not show up in Applications in the Task Manager.
