• Enhance Your Browsing with Hyperwords in Firefox

  While browsing it is easy to find information that you would like to know more about, convert, or translate. The Hyperwords extension provides access to these types of resources and more in Firefox. Using Hyperwords Once the extension has finished installing you will be presented with a demo video that will let you learn more about how Hyperwords works. For our first example we chose to look for more information concerning “WASP-12b” using Wikipedia. Notice the small bluish circle on the lower right of the highlighted term…it is the default access for the Hyperwords menu (access by hovering mouse over it). If you hover over the the Wikipedia (or other) link you can access the information in a scrollable popup window. Or if you prefer click on the link to view the information in a new tab. Choose the style that best suits your needs. Hyperwords is extremely useful for quick unit conversions. Suppose you want to share a news story that you have found while browsing. Highlight the title, access Hyperwords, and choose your preferred sharing source. You may need to authorize access for Hyperwords to post to your account. Once you have authorized access you can start sharing those links very easily. This is just a small sampling of Hyperwords many useful features. Preferences Hyperwords has a nice set of preferences available to help you customize it. Alter the menu popup style, add or remove menu entries, and modify other functions for Hyperwords. Conclusion Hyperwords makes a nice addition to Firefox for anyone needing quick access to search, reference, translation, and other services while browsing. • Oracle GoldenGate 12c - Leading Enterprise Replication

  Oracle GoldenGate 12c released  on October 17th and includes several new cutting edge features that firmly establishes GoldenGate's leader position in the data replication space.   In fact, this release more than doubles the performance of data delivery, supports Oracle's new multitenant database feature,  it's more secure, has more options for high availability, and has made great strides to simplify the configuration and deployment of the product.     Read through the press release if you haven't already and do not miss the quote from Cern's Eva Dafonte Perez, regarding Oracle GoldenGate 12c "….performs five times faster compared to previous GoldenGate versions and simplifies the management of a multi-tier environment" There are a variety of new and improved features in the Oracle GoldenGate 12c.  Here are the highlights: Optimized for Oracle Database 12c -  GoldenGate 12c is custom tailored to the unique capabilities of Oracle database 12c and out of the box GoldenGate 12c supports multitenant (pluggable database (PDB)) and non-consolidated deployments of Oracle Database 12c.   The naming convention used by database 12c is now in three parts (PDB-name, schema-name, and object name).  We have made changes to the GoldenGate capture process to support the new naming convention and streamlined the whole process so a single GoldenGate capture process is being used at the container level rather than at each individual PDB.  By having the capture process at the container level resource usage and the number of processes are reduced. • Using HBase or Cassandra for a token server

  I've been trying to figure out how to use HBase/Cassandra for a token system we're re-implementing. I can probably squeeze quite a lot more from MySQL, but it just seems it has come to clinging on to the wrong tool for the task just because we know it well. Eventually will hit a wall (like happened to us in other areas). Naturally I started looking into possible NoSQL solutions. The prominent ones (at least in terms of buzz) are HBase and Cassandra. The story is more or less like this: A user can send a gift other users. Each gift has a list of recipients or is public in which case limited by number or expiration date For each gift sent we generate some token that uniquely identifies that gift. For each gift we track the list of potential recipients and their current status relating to that gift (accepted, declinded etc). A user can request to see all his currently pending gifts A can request a list of users he has sent a gift to today (used to limit number of gifts sent) Required the ability to "dump" or "ignore" expired gifts (x day old gifts are considered expired) There are some other requirements but I believe the above covers the essentials. How would I go and model that using HBase or Cassandra? Well, the wall was performance. A few 10s of millions of records per day over 2 tables kept for 2 weeks (wish I could have kept it for more but there was no way). The response times kept getting slower and slower until eventually we had to start cutting down number of days we kept data. Caching helps here but it's not an ideal solution since a big part of the ops are updates. Also, as I hinted in my original post. We use MySQL extensively. We know exactly what it can and can't do both in naive implementations followed by native partitioning and finally by horizontally sharding our dataset on the application level to reside on multiple DB nodes. It can be done, but that's not really what I'm trying to get from this. I asked a very specific question about designing a solution using a NoSQL solution since it's very hard to find examples for designs out there. Brainlag, not trying to come off as rude. I actually appreciate it a lot that you are the only one who even bothered to respond. but I see it over and over again. People ask questions and others assume they have no idea what they're talking about and give an irrelevant answer. Ignore RDBMS please. The question is about nosql.

• Getting a virus is *very* annoying

  I spent most of yesterday removing an annoying virus from my PC. I feel slightly foolish for getting one in the first place, but after so many years I guess I was always going to eventually succumb. I was also a little surprised at the failure of various tools at removing it. The virus would redirect the browser to websites including ‘licosearch’, ‘hugosearch’ and ‘facebook’, and the disk would be thrashing away infecting dlls in some way. I had the full up to date version of McAfee installed. This identified that there was an issue in some dlls on the system and was able to ‘fix’ them. But they kept getting re-infected. So I installed Microsoft Security Essentials and this too was able to identify and ‘fix’ the infected dlls. The system scans take forever and I really expected better results. I also tried Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro, AVG and Sophos to no avail. Eventually I thought I’d investigate myself. It turned out that on reboot, the virus would start 3 instances of Firefox.exe which I’m guessing would do bad things including infecting as many dlls on the system as possible. I removed Firefox and the virus cleverly then launched 3 instances of Chrome! So I uninstalled Chrome and yes, it then started to launch 3 instances of iexplore.exe. If I’m honest, by this stage I was just seeing if it would be able to use any of the browsers! As it was starting these on reboot, I looked in my User Startup folder and there was a <randomly named>.exe and several log files. I deleted these and rebooted. When I looked they had been recreated. So I then looked in the registry Run and RunOnce entries: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Sure enough there were entries to run a file in C:\Program Files\<random name folder>\<random name file>.exe. I deleted this and rebooted and it was fixed. I also looked in the event log and found a warning that Winlogon had failed to start the file C:\Program Files\<random name folder>\<random name file>.exe So I also checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and this entry had also been changed. Finally I ran a full system scan to clean up any infected dlls. I hope it’s gone for good!  #

• Taking too long to get skills for entry level programmer position [closed]

  I don't have the skills for an entry level position as a .Net programmer. I am trying to learn what I need but there is too much to learn and too little time. What can I do? About two months ago, I went to a job interview for an entry level C# .Net programming/consultant position in NYC. When I heard back from them, they told me that the knowledge gap between what I knew and what they needed me to know was too big and I might have been a better fit if I had 6 months of experience. This was the first interview that I went on since graduating college. before the interview, I read a book on visual C#. Turns out it wasn't a very good book and I was missing a lot of key areas of knowledge such as ADO.net SQL (I had learned some LINQ) A little bit about how memory is handled Multiple threaded programming, etc. Because the book wasn't very good, the stuff I did know, I didn't know very well. I felt crushed. I've applied for jobs to gain experience but when recruiters hear that I have no experience they lose interest. I figured that I can at least work on my knowledge. Since then, I read "SQL Essentials" to cover the SQL bit and I found a pretty awesome book that is good enough to clear up what's hazy in my mind and covers almost all of the extra topics. The book is "C# 4.0: The Complete Reference" by Herbert Schildt. I'm even learning a lot about the topics I was familiar with. For a month now I've been working my way through this beast of a book. However, gaining the knowledge I need is taking too long. I can't hold off not having a full-time job much longer. I'm not stupid and I'm studying constantly pouring through the book, asking questions on stackoverflow, referencing the C# specification, etc. I have made great progress but there is just too much ground to cover. I'm on chapter 12 which is about a 3rd through the book.   I am having a highly annoying problem on Windows 7 with Microsoft Outlook 2007. Whenever I click on any hyperlinks I am present with the message This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator and let's not forget the most ear-piecing "DING" to accompany this wonderful informative message. Now I have searched the web high and low for a solution here and most sources suggest the same solution of resetting your IE as your default browser. Tried .. failed A lot of sources suggest this has something to do with installing and uninstalling chrome. I have never installed Chrome but am actually consdering this to see if it by some chance fixes my computer. A lot of sources also point to a microsoft kb article 325478 which is focused around Windows XP and totally unrelated to my problem. I see there are some other queries on SuperUser with no resolution. Please can someone help solve this highly annoying issue. I am running Window 7 professional x64 Microsoft Office 2007 Microsoft Security Essentials Running in a windows work group with default policy settings HELP!

• Can't connect to computer via SBS2011 RWA

  I've got an SBS 2011 Essentials server. Users a able to log on to Remote Web Access using their username and password. However, the trouble starts when a users attempts to log on remotely to his/her computer from the Remote Web Access website. When the user clicks on his/her computer (in the RWA website), the user is first presented with a window listing Publisher, Type, Remote Computer name and Gateway Server. Everything seems fine here, and the user clicks Connect. The user credentials are provided, and a connection is attempted. However, the logon attempt always fails with the message "The logon attempt failed". The logon attempt always generates three log events in the server log: EventId: 4672 - Special Logon EventId: 4624 - Logon EventId: 4634 - Logoff All events happens have the same timestamp. No events are logged on the client machine which the user attempts to log on to. Others have solved this by going to their IIS server and enable "Windows Authentication" for Rpc and RpcWithCert (in Default Web Site). However, this is in place on the server. I've also got RD CAPs and RD RAPs in place. As a side note; if i try to connect to any of the machines using the Remote Desktop Connection using the "Connect from anywhere" functionality - then things work flawlessly! In other words, the error only occurs when attempting to login to a computer via the Remote Web Access website. I've run out of ideas for how I can solve this (too many hours spent). Any ideas highly appreciated!

• DirectAccess Server firewall rules blocking ports

  I have configured DirectAccess on my Server 2012 Essentials box and most of it works great - I can remotely access the server via RDP and the default IIS website on port 80. However, I can't access anything that uses other ports. For this example, the Team Foundation Server website. The only way to access it is by accessing http://localhost:8080/tfs on the server directly - even when using http://servername:8080/tfs or http://192.168.1.100:8080/tfs won't work. I've tried adding the ports to the NAT exceptions using Set-NetNatTransitionConfiguration –IPv4AddressPortPool and while that has allowed some ports used internally (Deluge, for example) it hasn't allowed me access to the URL. I think I've narrowed it down to the "DirectAccess Server Settings" Group Policy that is created when configuring DirectAccess. When I disable the link for this GPO, the TFS site works again, but the default IIS site stops working (but RDP still works). I already have rules in the firewall on the server for TFS and before enabling this Group Policy (so before configuring DirectAccess) I could access both sites. Does anybody have any suggestions for things I can change to allow access to both? I've uploaded the full GPO report and my Remote Access Configuration Summary for more details.

• Unable to stop chrome.exe *32

  So I was installing roboform today and was unable to stop the process chrome.exe *32... Even when I uninstalled chrome. This is the error I got: I used lockhunter and it said it was located in %appdata%\Local\Google\Chrome. However, it was unable to unlock, delete or rename. When I use explorer to delete or rename that folder, it says it's being used by Chrome. Even after restarting my computer it still does this. I've tried using the built in chrome task manager (Wrench View Background Pages) and I can't seem to find a process there that has the same amount of memory. I have run many, many virus scans, by: Microsoft security essentials AVG (Free version) Malwarebytes (Pro version) Norton 360 (Pro version) McAfee (Pro Version) Avira (Free version) Avast! Antivirus (Free version) None of which returned with any viruses. • Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz Virus Impossible to get rid of?!

  Hi Guys I'm new to this forum so I'm unsure whether this is the right place for a question like this. I have a Trojan Horse infection that lives in memory and seems to be impossible to get rid of. I've tried a vew AntiVirus products (Norton, Windows Essentials & AVG Free) all to no avail & I've recently tried a few bootable antivirus solutions I found here: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/ Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2008 (failed - it wouldn't even load the UI, is there a newer one out there?) F Secure Rescue Disk (Updates & Scanner ran, found 10 infections, said it was going to delete or repair them, but didn't get rid of them) Avira found a load of infections but it froze when I tried to interact with the UI after the scan. Every time I run these I'll load Windows after & run AVG, and it still finds Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz (in Services.exe) & Trojan Horse Generic.16.ARSU (in svchost.exe) Is anyone familiar with a virus like this? Can anyone suggest how to approach a solution? Thanks Dave

  Question: What do I put in the foo.spec file so that the rpm's will remove the previous rpm before installing? Description: I have created a spec file that creates rpm's for a few packages that use the same source and provide the same service, each with a slightly different configuration. • Lightweight Linux distro that includes developer tools? (or, the most BSD-like Linux)

  I cut my teeth on Minix and Slackware 1.1, but I've been in the OS X Wilderness for the last few years. I'm trying to standardize on a Linux distribution for personal and work-related use on less powerful laptops and under virtualization. So far, NetBSD and OpenBSD are the best fit for my purposes- but after plenty of frustration I've come to the conclusion that I need to stick with Linux to get the hardware and software support that comes with it. What I like about NetBSD/OpenBSD that I'd like to keep: X, but no default KDE, GNOME or XFCE! A sensible /etc and dot file setup- startx calls xinit, xinit looks for ~/.xinitrc; nothing more complicated than that is needed. Command line tools and file-based configuration: I shouldn't need a GUI to connect to a WAP. Decent selection of binary packages; building from source is OK, but nothing source-only like Gentoo. pkg_add (BSD) and apt-get both have treated me well in the past. Modest RAM and HDD requirements: boot + X + awesome+ two xterms takes up 80 MB on OpenBSD and 240 MB on Debian 5 and Crunchbang In my experience, most "lightweight" and Live CDs focus on a nice desktop environment crammed into a CD or USB stick; once you add build-essentials you end up with something just about as bloated as Ubuntu or Debian full install. • Which Ubuntu-like Linux OSs work well on a flash drive?

  I want a Linux OS that I can load on a flash drive, but I don't want to relearn an entire operating system. I want to know which tiny Linux installations are most like Ubuntu. For example, I'd like to use the apt-get package manager, the Gedit text editor, and the bash shell. I'd like to use something that's already popular, stable, and highly compatible, but it needs to fit comfortably in one gig of my four-gig flash drive (just the essentials; I'll use the remaining three gigs to store installed programs and files). I have no preference for window managers; I just want something small and fast that works like Ubuntu. What is the most popular Ubuntu-like OS that can be easily run on a thumb drive? Edit: I'm not sure I understand how this works. I don't to use a USB drive as a LiveCD; I want to plug in a USB stick and use the computer as if it was my own. In other words, I want to be able to install programs on the drive on one computer and use them on another. Do any of these OSs let me do that? Please forgive my ignorance.

• Webcam becomes "Unknown Device" after Windows Messenger 2011 is installed

  I have Sony VAIO VGN-NS290J laptop. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I was able to find drivers for all hardware without any problems. Recently, I installed Microsoft Windows Live Essentials 2011, i.e. Windows Live Messenger 2011. Ever since that application is running on my computer, my webcam is not recognized by the OS any more. It is listed as the "Unknown Device" and placed in the Universal Serial Bus controllers group in the Device Manager. There don't seem to be any drivers for this webcam. It's a standard Sony Motion Eye web camera and Sony does not offer any drivers for it. There is one application to download that utilizes the camera, but there are no drivers (and the system is showing the same behavior regardless of the presence of the application). It happens from time to time that the webcam becomes recognized by the OS again, after a couple of restarts; but not always. Then it becomes unknown again. I am absolutely positive that this issue is caused by the Windows Live Messenger 2011, because same symptoms caused the same effects before. I wish to be able to continue to use this software, but also to use my webcam. I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and if there is a way to fix it. Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it. Update: I have discovered a pattern - if the camera goes astray, restarting the machine does not bring it back; but switching the computer off and turning it back on does. Every time! This is getting super complicated :)

• Windows 7 Loading Very Slow

  Hi guys, I've had a problem that only started to occur yesterday. When I boot into Windows 7 and log on to my user account, the computer gets very laggy and slow for at least 5 minutes. Icons take ages to load, and everything is rendered unclickable. This happens for about five minutes after which everything goes back to normal. I tried restarting a few times to see if this is a recurring problem, and it is. I ran a full system scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and found nothing wrong, and I also defragmented the disk to increase performance. However, the problem still exists. Edit: For the past day, I've been trying to install Ubuntu on the same laptop. When installing it on a partition didn't work, I decided to use Wubi. Could this somehow be the problem? Also, my hard drive gets hot a lot, so could the heat be affecting the hard drive and maybe making it defective? Any help on this issue would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

• Windows 7 UAC (user access control) is being disabled on every reboot

  To put it simply, I noticed UAC was disabled so I enabled it. I was prompted to reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. Upon my reboot I checked the settings again as I hadn't disabled UAC in the first place. It was again set to off (never notify). For the heck of it I repeated the process a couple of more times. Same result each time. I have Microsoft Security Essentials running a full scan nightly so I should be protected from viruses. I also did an on demand scan with the online tool at www.antivirus.com. Nothing was found. Other than the fact that UAC is being disabled on each reboot I have no other reason to suspect a virus. So my question is does anyone have insight into if this is a possible problem with a virus or other malware changing my UAC settings on each boot or is it possibly a problem with Windows and UAC itself? If it is malware are there suggestions for other products outside of the ones I have used to detect and remove it.

• Google: "302 Moved" in Firefox

  For some Google search queries executed from the Firefox search bar, or manually by typing in the URL, I get a ''302 Moved'' page. I did a quick virus scan, have checked the hosts file and the plugins and add-ons that are installed in Firefox. Nothing is out of the ordinary. What could be the problem? These URLs (and any URL with google.com, empty and firefox-a in them) show me a 302 Moved page: https://www.google.com/search?q=c%23+empty+array&client=firefox-a https://www.google.com/search?q=empty&client=firefox-a Whereas these URLs work fine: https://www.google.com/search?q=c%23+empty+array (no firefox-a) https://www.google.com/search?q=empty (no firefox-a) https://www.google.com/search?q=c%23+array&client=firefox-a (no empty) https://www.google.nl/search?q=c%23+empty+array&client=firefox-a (no .com) By default Google redirects my queries to their .nl website, and uses HTTPS. I am currently executing a full system virus scan using Security Essentials. My Firefox plugins were up-to-date. No unfamiliar Firefox plugins or add-ons found. Restarting Firefox did not solve the issue. The issue does not occur in Internet Explorer. The hosts file did not contain any unfamiliar entries.

• 8007064c(2011) and 80280007(2009) persistant after all known repairs

  I'm on Windows 7 Home x64, and have ran into a major issue with Live Messenger(which I use daily). I have full offline installers for both 2011 and the last Wave 3 2009(14.0.8117.0416) Suites. Both give the following errors: Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer(official): An unknown error occured. Error:0x8007064c Source WLXSuite WL 2009 offline installer(official): You already have a more recent version of Windows Live. Error: OnCatalogResult:0x80280007 Next steps: If you want to install this older version, first uninstall any later versions that are on your computer. Get help with this error The 2011 installer also says it is updating messenger, I don't select anything else. Then last 2009 installer says their is a newer version that needs uninstalled even after the following procedures. MS Help pages provided all basically lead to using uninstall from control panel. Which I've uninstalled all Live components including watcom safety scanner and portable SQL from. I've followed online instructions for manually deleting folders from Program Files(x86), Appdata, and some others under \User\All Users and the one for the one account on the machine. I've used CCcleaner 3.01, ASC 3.7.3 and Beta 4 with deep scan along with deleting folders, and checked their uninstallers for Live components too, and none were there. wlmuninstaller.exe tool reports nothing, but after a failed install it finds something, but failes to clean it under all user admin privilege. The same errors still occur after all of that. Google searching I see people on forums suggesting reinstalling the OS cause MS doesn't even know how to fix this, but I'm hoping someone here can help. NOTE: I don't have System Restore or any other state freeze utilities going, and I don't have any real time AV going(I sometime scan with defender, anti rootkits, and online scanners). NOTE2:I posted this on windowslivehelp.com, before looking to see if the place was active or not, hoping I can get help here. Thanks
