    Quick question: I have a situation where I need to let multiple people on different PCs log into one server 2008 machine as administrator simultaneously over remote desktop. I have the CALs for it, it's just not set up correctly. When one user tries to log in, it boots the other out. What I need is to present to them a different session, just each as logged in as admin. Sorry for the slightly rambling post, I'm new here. Thanks!

    I have a Windows 2008 server with multiple IPs that is acting as DNS server. I have set the DNS server up to only accept connections on a single of these IPs. The DNS is serving as secondary DNS and when it connects to the primary DNS server it is not connecting with this particular IP address, but one of the other IPs. Is there a way in which I can make sure the server connects using the correct IP?

    I'm running in to a few complications in my migration process. My main role has been a Linux / Sun administrator for 15 yrs so Windows server 2008 environment is a bit new to me, but understandable. Here's our situation and reason for migrating... We have a group of developers that develop VERY low-level software in Visual C with some inline assembler. All the workstations were separate from each other which cased consistency problems with development libraries, versions, etc... Our goal was to throw them all on to a Windows domain were we can control workstation installations, hot fixes (which can cause enormous problems), software versions, etc... All Development Workstations are running Windows XP x32 (sp3) and x64 (sp2) I running in to user permission problems and I was wondering maybe I missed one, tWO or a handful of things during my deployment. Here is what I have currently done: Installed and Activated Windows Server 2008 Added Roles for DNS and Active Directory Configured DNS with WINS for netbios name usage Added developers to AD and mapped their shared folders to their profile Added roles for IIS7 and configured the developers SVN Installed MySQL Enterprise Edition for development usage Not having a firm understanding of Group Policy I haven't delved deeply in to that realm yet. Problems I'm encountering: 1. When I configure any XP workstations to logon our domain, once a user uses their new AD login, everything goes well, except they have very restrictive permissions. (Eg: If a user opens any existing file, they don't have write access, except in their documents folder.) Since these guys are working on low system level events, they need to r/w all files. All I'm looking to restrict in software installations. Am I correct to assume that I can use WSUS to maintain the domains hot fixes and updates pushed to the workstations? I need to map a centralized shared development drive upon the users login. This is open to EVERYONE. Right now I have the users folders mapped upon login through their AD profile. But how do I map a share if I've already defined one within their profile in AD? Any responses would be very grateful. Do I have to configure and define a group policy for the domain users? Can I use Volume Mirroring to mirror / sync two drives on two separate servers or should I just script a rsync or MS Synctool? The drives simply store nightly system images.

You must restart this computer before installing SQL Server. Of course I already restarted 10 times. I've found a post in a forum saying that I should clear HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations but I don't have such a key.

The purpose is to adjust the time in a script, when other apps from that script are not running. It is not an option to use the built-in NTP service because that makes some apps on this server fail - note, that this server is used in an industrial environment with no PCs on the network and no Windows update or similar applied.     I have a database on a SQL Sever 2012 instance which I would like to copy to a 2008 server. The 2008 server cannot restore backups created by a 2012 server (I have tried). I cannot find any options in 2012 to create a 2008 compatible backup. Am I missing something? Is there an easy way to export the schema and data to a version-agnostic format which I can then import into 2008? The database does not use any 2012 specific features. It contains tables, data and stored procedures. Here is what I have tried so far: I tried "tasks" - "generate scripts" on the 2012 server, and I was able to generate the schema (including stored procedures) as a sql script. This didn't include any of the data, though. After creating that schema on my 2008 machine, I was able to open the "Export Data" wizard on the 2012 machine, and after configuring the 2012 as source machine and the 2008 as target machine, I was presented with a list of tables which I could copy. I selected all my tables (300+), and clicked through the wizard. Unfortunately it spends ages generating its scripts, then fails with errors like "Failure inserting into the read-only column 'FOO_ID'". I also tried the "Copy Database Wizard", which claimed to be able to copy "from 2000 or later to 2005 or later". It has two modes: 1) "detach and attach", which failed with error: Message: Index was outside the bounds of the array. StackTrace: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.PropertyBag.SetValue(Int32 index, Object value) ... at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.DataFile.get_FileName() 2) SQL Management Object Method which failed with error "Cannot read property IsFileStream.This property is not available on SQL Server 7.0."

    Hello. We read a number of things about referencing SQL Server SMO from Visual Studio but still don't have the definite answers we need. So, here it goes... A number of years ago we created a C# application using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In that application, we added .NET references to a number of SQL Server SMO objects, and everything worked fine. Those references were: Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum GAC 9.0.242.0 We have now migrated to Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. However, when we try to reference those same SMO objects for SQL Server 2008 R2, they don't appear in the .NET references tab. We're wanting to reference the SQL Server 2008 R2 version of those same SMO assemblies for our upgraded C# application. On our development machines, we have SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer installed with all options, including the SDK such that the assemblies are found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, my first questions are: Are we supposed to do file references to the SMO assemblies instead of .NET references in Visual Studio 2010 w/ SQL Server 2008 R2? Or, is there some problem with our development machines such that the SMO assemblies are not appearing in the .NET references tab? Next, our production machines will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup installed with the client tools option selected, thus providing those same SMO assemblies in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, the next questions are: When we release to production, are we supposed to redistribute the SMO assemblies with our application? Or, will our application work on the production servers without redistributing the SMO assemblies (since the client tools/SMO assemblies have been installed)? What else????? Thanks for the help!

  • Cannot connect to windows server by name over vpn connection

    I have a rented dedicated windows server on a public ip that is acting as a SQL Server and VPN server. I need to connect to this server via computer name to get replication in place. I cannot use an ip address due to this issue: So, due to this, we are going the VPN route. That is my primary issue: After I am connected to this server's vpn, I can connect to SQL Server using the ip address but I cannot connect by the computer's name as you can see below... Right now, there is no hardware firewall on it since I had it removed to test this issue. I am running Windows 2008 Enterprise Server as the VPN server. I am not sure if the route print will help any from the workstation trying to connect but here is the info: IPv4 Route Table Active Routes: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 21 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.255 On-link 10.0.0.2 276 Any other info needed?     I am trying to add a new member to our DFS topology. We have 3 DCs (VMs - VMware) running Windows server 2012, two servers are located in or Primary site and the third at our DR site. Currently the two servers at our primary site are currently replicating DFS (full mesh) and are working fine. I have tried several times to add the third DC to our DFS topology, every time i configure the replication path e.g E:\MSI and click ok the MMC snap in crashes.   • Does Win 2008 r2 x64 server come with .net 3 sp1 package already installed?

    same as in title? I have a test server with mentioned OS and my app is .net 3.5 based. I do want to know if win 2008 r2 comes with service pack 1 for .net 3.5 from the box. And does it come with .net 3.5 sp1 family update as WELL, since after I downloaded the update, the installer says I do not have software required to update. Could some win 2008 guru perhaps explain it to me? thanks luke

  • Copying compressed files from Server 2008 R2 network share to XP client via VPN fails

    At the first sight the question looks similar to this one. I have experienced an odd behavior while trying to copy a certain file from Windows Server 2008 R2 network share to Windows XP Professional client via VPN. The VPN was set up using RRAS on the server machine. I will try to provide as much informations as possible in order to make the issue more clear. When trying to copy the compressed file sized ~2.5 MB (via Explorer or CMD, doesn't matter), the process stalls after some 20%, producing an error message after few seconds: Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is no longer available. If i start the command ping -t 192.168.2.1 (where the IP address specified belongs to the server) side by side with the copy command, I can clearly see that the ping command times out for few seconds as the copy process stalls. When this happens all network activities are frozen. After a few seconds, the network recovers, ping continues to run normally, however the copy process stands still before it displays the above error message. Copying other files (I tried 4-5 files), of which some are larger and some are smaller, succeeds. Seems to me that I can copy all uncompressed files. As soon as I try to copy an archive, the process freezes. Even a 707 KB large archive can't be copied. I can only reproduce this behavior on 2 machines, both Windows XP Professional, one is w/ SP2 and the other w/ SP3. Other XP clients don't have this problem, neither do Windows 7 clients. If I connect to the server using Remote Desktop Connection without using VPN from either of these 2 machines (using the same user account), I can copy anything I want normally, even these "problematic" files. Does anyone have any clue about what could possibly be going on?

I get another event telling me that there is a report here: *C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_w3wp.exe_cdb8af6deb381574fe9fb0dc9aa3edaad59acd5f_cab_4fbf9b53* It contains the following files: WERD931.tmp.appcompat.txt WERDFE9.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml WER99EF.tmp.WERDataCollectionFailure.txt The "depressing one" is the WERDataCollectionFailure that says: Heap dump generation failed: 0x8007012b Mini dump generation failed: 0x8007001f After many tries, lots of msdn documentation and many failed google search. I'm out of ideas on how to get a dump here. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to make WER work? Thank you in advance for your time reading this :)

  • Having IIS remote management problem with my vista machine managing Server 2008 IIS 7.5

    I am trying to use IIS 7 Remote Management installed on Vista Ultimate SP1. Connection is to IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 Webserver R2. Tried on both full & core install. When I connect up, the console wants to download and install new features. Microsoft.Web.Management.IisClient 7.5.0.0 Microsoft.Web.Management.AspnetClient 7.5.0.0 I check the boxes and click OK and it downloads them and asks if I want to install them, but after I click run it just quits. I tried just choosing one or the other, same thing. I ran IIS Remote tool as administrator. These features installed correctly on my XP machine. Any ideas? UPDATE : If I had any Rep I would offer like 500 rep to get this fixed!
