• USB drivers installed twice

  Hello, I have a problem with usb drivers on Windows 7 64bit When I start up my laptop, the mouse I have plugged into a usb port does not work. I have to open the device manager, where there are two "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" entries. One is marked as faulty (yellow triangle). I uninstall this. Scan for changes. Then it re-appears, but not marked as faulty. And the mouse works. I have to do this every time I reboot. A colleague has the same problem. Both DELL laptops, but different models. I've tried uninstalling all USB controllers, but after a reboot, they are all reinstalled with the faulty entry. This only started happening in the last few weeks. Any help appreciated. • Latitude XT2 Battery issue

  I received the add-on battery yesterday and put it in side my new lattitude xt2 but it would not recognize the battery. the laptop simply flashed yellow and the battery itself when the white battery level indicator was pressed just flashed green i left it plugged in overnight and its still the same issue. it will not charge. i removed and re-inserted the battery several times to make sure the plug in was properly connected but still no luck. is there a trick to this? or some way i can make this work? or is it simply defective?

• Lexmark C532 error code won't go away

  I can't get rid of error code 84 - Yellow PC unit missing. I've just replaced all 4 photoconductors with genuine Lexmark parts and now the error code keeps appearing. I've swapped the PC units around so know it's not a faulty unit. I've followed the suggestions in the online Lexmark manuals and even called the Lexmark helpline but to no avail. any suggestions? Printer was fine until it gave me a PC unit life warning and I renewed them. Thanks.

• Convert a colored PDF into a white/black

  On Debian Sid, I have a PDF with a blue background and yellow font. I've searched a lot on Super User but i haven't found anything useful for me. I have tried to convert the PDF into a grayscale one with: gs -o grayscale.pdf -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sColorConversionStrategy=Gray -sProcessColorModel=DeviceGray -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 colored.pdf The problem is that I obtain a PDF whit white fonts and dark grey background so I cannot print it. After that I tried: convert -density 96x96 gs2.pdf -density 96x96 -negate -compress zip inv.pdf I got a PDF with black fonts (and this is okay) and grey background (and this is not okay). What can I do to obtain a PDF with white background and black fonts?

• Internet Connectivity Issue

  Lately, I have been having issues connecting to the internet on one of my computers. The computer I am using now, however, is on the same network as the computer I am posting from. The issues seemed to randomly start about 2 days ago, and the only thing that seemed to fix the issue was to connect to Hotspot Shield VPN. I do not get any yellow warning signs by the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar. I am sometimes able to use Google search, but I can never go to a website. I am also not able to re-install Hotspot Shield or update Flash because they have to connect to their company's servers. I have tried other VPN services just to see if it would fix anything, but as I expected, nothing changed. I am unsure of how I can fix the issue, and I appreciate all help given. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit Pro on a custom-built computer. Thanks.

• VMWare Fusion cannot connect to the NAT connection on my Mac

  I have been using VMWare Fusion on my Mac to check out my websites on localhost. Now I can't connect anymore with the NAT connection. There seems to be a problem with my IP address or Mac address? I have no idea what causes this, it was working fine before!? In the XP (SP2) VM, in the taskbar I see the Local Area Connection with the yellow warning icon. The bubble says: "This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be aisle to access the Internet or some network resources. For more information, click this message." Doing that opens up the Local Area Connection Status panel. In the Support tab, when I click the repair button I get following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing IP address." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Show which modifier keys are pressed during screen recording?

  I'd like to see which modifier keys I've pressed during screen recordings so my students can understand what keys I've pressed while I click and drag. Is there any software that can do this? I'm aware that Windows 7 does this internally, if there's a way to enable it. Windows 7 When you have a Wacom tablet connected to your PC, or if you have a Tablet PC, windows shows little yellow tip bubbles whenever you press modifier keys. Any way to enable these on a normal PC? Update: I've tried starting the Tablet PC Input Service but nothing happens. The Tablet PC Settings dialog has nothing interesting either. Is there a registry setting I can tweak?

• Windows 7 Printing to a network printer

  We have a 2008 server as our print server. Clients that use windows xp with a logon script to map have no problems printing. When I test printing to a network printer on a windows 7 machine it works fine up to a few machines as soon As i get 12-15 workstations trying to print, when they log in they get the yellow exclamation mark and needs troubleshooting against the printer name. It is being deploy by group policy. I have tried to deploy it by group policy also by group policy preferences and by using a script and i get the same error whatever i try. Does anyone have any suggestions to try and troubleshoot? Once again Windows xp clients have no issues printing at all. It is only windows 7 clients. Thanks

• How to view status of software RAID 1 resynching?

  I have two 500 GB disks and yesterday I mirrored first drive to the second one using software RAID 1. PC has now been on for 30 hours. Both disks say "Resynching", but there is no progress indicator. In addition, there is a small yellow exclamation mark on both disks. My questions are: How long could the synch take for 500 GB drive with about 150 GB of data? PC has 4 GBs of RAM and AMD dual core 4000+ Is there a way to monitor status of the synching? How can I check what the exclamation mark means?

• Why would a machine ruin three "power supply"s?

  A client of mine has an XP era eMachines. The power supply has died and been replaced 3 times. I've discharged the motherboard and checked the surge protector. In the middle of a scan with ComboFix, the machine died. It powers on and hangs before the BIOS and shows a solid yellow light. I believe the model # is T5062 or something like that. Aside from a bad outlet, what would cause the PSU to die a few times?

• Windows 7 Bluetooth Configuration

  I have Bluetooth installed in my laptop. The Bluetooth is enabled according to the status light. However, I do not see Bluetooth listed in device manager or have a control panel option for it. A scan for new hardware doesn't turn up Bluetooth. Nor are any devices listed with a Yellow Exclamation Point. I do have three USB Hubs Listed as "Generic USB Hub." There is no Bluetooth icon in the notification area and Bluetooth is not listed under Devices and Printers. What am I missing?

• One quarter of screen corrupted on MacBook Pro

  I have a problem with my MacBook Pro's screen - here's a video: http://yfrog.com/4wm63z For those who prefer words, if you divide the screen vertically into 4 columns, the second column is corrupted (flickering, and discoloured, usually with yellow). I took it to an Apple store and they said it could be the screen or the logic board, neither of which will be cheap to replace. However, occasionally this problem will completely go away. So before I part with my cash, or decide to turn this into an overpriced media center for my TV... could the problem be a loose cable, or something else cheaper to fix?

• Gparted: Copy Greyed Out

  I booted my system to a gparted linux live CD and I have two partitions: /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 I want to move both of them to my new physical hard drive (called /dev/sdb). When I right click on /dev/sda1, I can choose copy and then paste it onto /dev/sdb. When I right click on /dev/sda2, copy is greyed out and there is a yellow exclamation point to the left of the disk. I know that the disk works since I can boot my computer from it. Why won't gparted let me copy /dev/sda2 to my new hard disk? Since the option is greyed out, I don't even get an error message. Thanks!

• 100% CPU Runaway Processes (NCurses?)

  This is a problem I've had for years, but just haven't posted anywhere about it until now. I'm running GRML, a Debian squeeze based Linux distro, and occasionally certain processes will runaway and cause 100% CPU usage. The only way I can usually know is when my thermal meter on my statusbar will turn yellow. Sometimes I run fullscreen applications when it happens, though, so I sometimes don't catch it, leaving my computer wasting away at my CPU. The processes that I can think of off the top of my head are these: abook, aumix, hnb, wyrd. They are all NCurses based console applications, and there are others that are also NCurses based. Is there a bug in NCurses somewhere that I need patched or something? This also happened on the same distro with the same applications on a different laptop with the same configurations. Any ideas?   I'm looking for a way to manage my academic workflow for reading e-books in .epub or .mobi formats on OSX. My requirements: - continuous scrolling mode - ability to highlight text (e.g. in yellow, using a single keyboard shortcut) - ideally, the ability to make annotations as well Amazon Kindle reader for OSX offers annotating, but not continuous scrolling mode. Calibre offers continuous scrolling mode, but does not allow highlighting or annotating. Is there a solution that will allow me to do this? I'm also open to workarounds, e.g. using Calibre to convert to HTML, then reading the book in a browser---but I would still need the ability to highlight using a single keystroke.

• Using Gentoo's `ebegin`, `eend` etc under Ubuntu

  We're quite fond of the style of the ebegin, eend, eerror, eindent etc commands used by Portage and other tools on Gentoo. The green-yellow-red bullets and standard layout make for very quick spotting of errors, on what would otherwise be very grey command line output. #!/bin/sh source /etc/init.d/functions.sh ebegin "Copying data" rsync .... eend $? Producing output similar to: * Copying data... [ OK ] As a result we're using these commands in some of our common shell scripts, which is a problem for the people using Ubuntu and other linuxes. (linuces? linuxen? linucae? other distros) On Gentoo these functions are provided by OpenRC, and imported with functions.sh file (whose exact position seems to vary slightly). But is there a simple way of getting these commands on Ubuntu? In theory we could replace them all with dull echos, but we'd rather not?

• How to move selection in Excel?

  I know how to create or extend selections, i.e., via F8 or Shift F8. When I have created the desired selection, I would like to move that particular selection a few cells to the right and/or down. I now need to select the similar form selection on another place in the worksheet. Does anyone know how I can do this? Example: Selection made on A1..B3, C3 and D5 and, for instance, made it Yellow. I now want to move this complete selection four places to the right, to E1..F3, H3 and I5 (to be able to make it another color). It has nothing to do with the cut and paste to move cells.

• "DNS not responding" error with D-Link router and PPTP internet connection

  I have a D-Link DIR-615 router since around six months. My internet connection is VPN (PPTP) based, i.e. I have been given a username and password from my ISP and my IP address is dynamic. Since a few days I am experiencing a serious problem. My router connects normally (I can see the yellow light), but my computer is giving me a "DNS not responding" error. • Why can't connect with second computer in same LAN and settings?

  I'm trying to connect to WLAN with notebook. The notebook works fine with other WLANs. It can authenticate, signal is "very good" but it says "can't access internet". (On Windows it's small yellow exclamation mark on the signal). With other computer exactly in the same location, with the same settings, it's possible to connect. Both are configurated to get IP dynamically. One difference is that the other computer is using "Ralink wireless" instead normal windows client to connect. But does this make a difference? the settings are the same. What could be the reason?

  How do I make a whole row follow wherever I am in the Calc document when I scroll down/up? I'm looking for something that keeps a row from moving, or to make it stay put. This is so that when I want to see other rows, this one locked row will stay in place and allow me to refer back to it on screen without having to scroll all the way back up to the top of the document. • How can I set up conditional formatting to highlight a range only if all its cells are empty?

  I am new to conditional formatting and having a hard time. I have 6 columns with 100 rows. What I would like to have happen is to highlight the row in one color if there is no data in it at all. If there is data in one cell within the row, however, I would like for the highlighting to be removed from the row completely. Currently I have it set up to highlight the entire row if there is no data in it and if there is data in one cell, only that cell has no highlighting....I can't seem to make the entire row's highlighting disappear. I have used the formula to determine which cells to format: =I16:N16="" formatting color is yellow. I know I have to add a second conditional format but I have tried numerous different formulas and cant seem to get it to work.

• Why do I have only incoming traffic when copying from network source to network destination?

  I have a VirtualBox VM that is located on a network share of my NAS. When I copy something from the VM's disk onto another of the NAS' network shares (so the data is visible outside the VM), the Windows 7 Task Manager shows only incoming network traffic (yellow graph). It's as if the data was only received but never sent over the network. I verified that the data arrives on the other network share. As I understand it, the data flow looks like this: +-NAS--------+ +-Win7 PC (VM Host)-+ | Share1(VM)-|>---->|-+ | | | | | | | Share2 <---|<----<|-+ | +------------+ +-------------------+ If it was like this, I would see incoming and outgoing traffic, right? What am I not getting here?

• Apache htaccess with mod_expires Not Working for certain directories

  I have a Joomla site that I am trying to enable caching using mod_expires. I have the .htaccess in the root of the site and have added the options as found on the page http://www.pactsoftware.nl/tools/joomla-optimization.html Using the PageSpeed extension in Chrome, prior to adding this in my .htaccess, my site scores a 55 (Caching is at the top, and lists a lot of images, CSS, and JS files). After these directives, it scores 70, with caching in the yellow, but still lists some image files (some are two directories deep and the rest are four). I checked for any other .htaccess files in the Joomla root, but none are between those folders and the root. It is almost as if htaccess only works in that one directory, not the subfolders. I have tried putting a .htaccess in each affected subdirectory, but it does not work. Does anyone have any ideas?
