  • How can I be a Guru? Is it possible? [closed]

    - by Kev
Before 1999, I heard about computer. But, I don't know what it look like. TV? Maybe! Before 2001, I only saw it in book. It looks like a TV. Before 2005, I touched it in reality. It still looks like a TV + Black Box. In 2005, I entered university. I had a cource about Mathematica.I loved programming since then. In 2006, I owned a computer. I was coding C every day. if...else..., for..., while..., switch... entered my life. Since 2007, I have learned Data Structures, Algorithms...Then, C#, Java, Python, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, F#... A lot of languages. I'm still learning new lang. Unfortunately, I only know syntax! I'm always a novice(??)! I know some guru start programming at age of 8 or 12. I admire these gurus who are compiler writers, language designers, architecture designers, Linux hackers... Is it possible to become a guru like me. If possible, how? what should I do now? Any advice? Thank you very much.

  • Define a positive number to be isolated if none of the digits in its square are in its cube [closed]

    - by proglaxmi
Define a positive number to be isolated if none of the digits in its square are in its cube. For example 163 is n isolated number because 69*69 = 26569 and 69*69*69 = 4330747 and the square does not contain any of the digits 0, 3, 4 and 7 which are the digits used in the cube. On the other hand 162 is not an isolated number because 162*162=26244 and 162*162*162 = 4251528 and the digits 2 and 4 which appear in the square are also in the cube. Write a function named isIsolated that returns 1 if its argument is an isolated number, it returns 0 if its not an isolated number and it returns -1 if it cannot determine whether it is isolated or not (see the note below). The function signature is: int isIsolated(long n) Note that the type of the input parameter is long. The maximum positive number that can be represented as a long is 63 bits long. This allows us to test numbers up to 2,097,151 because the cube of 2,097,151 can be represented as a long. However, the cube of 2,097,152 requires more than 63 bits to represent it and hence cannot be computed without extra effort. Therefore, your function should test if n is larger than 2,097,151 and return -1 if it is. If n is less than 1 your function should also return -1. Hint: n % 10 is the rightmost digit of n, n = n/10 shifts the digits of n one place to the right. The first 10 isolated numbers are N n*n n*n*n 2 4 8 3 9 27 8 64 512 9 81 729 14 196 2744 24 576 13824 28 784 21952 34 1156 39304 58 3364 195112 63 3969 250047

  • Which Android hardware devices should I test on? [closed]

    - by Tchami
Possible Duplicate: What hardware devices do you test your Android apps on? I'm trying to compile a list of Android hardware devices that it would make sense to buy and test against if you want to target an as broad audience as possible, while still not buying every single Android device out there. I know there's a lot of information regarding screen sizes and Android versions available elsewhere, but: when developing for Android it's not terribly useful to know if the screen size of a device is 480x800 or 320x240, unless you feel like doing the math to convert that into Android "units" (i.e. small, normal, large or xlarge screens, and ldpi, mdpi, hdpi or xhdpi densities). Even knowing the dimensions of a device, you cannot be sure of the actual Android units as there's some overlap, see Range of screens supported in the Android documentation Taking into account the distribution of Platform versions and Screen Sizes and Densities, below is my current list based on information from the Wikipedia article on Comparison of Android devices. I'm fairly sure the information in this list is correct, but I'd welcome any suggestions/changes. Phones | Model | Android Version | Screen Size | Density | | HTC Wildfire | 2.1/2.2 | Normal | mdpi | | HTC Tattoo | 1.6 | Normal | mdpi | | HTC Hero | 2.1 | Normal | mdpi | | HTC Legend | 2.1 | Normal | mdpi | | Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 | 1.6/2.1 | Normal | mdpi | | Motorola Droid | 2.0-2.2 | Normal | hdpi | | Samsung Galaxy S II | 2.3 | Normal | hdpi | | Samsung Galaxy Nexus | 4.0 | Normal | xhdpi | | Samsung Galaxy S III | 4.0 | Normal | xhdpi | **Tablets** | Model | Android Version | Screen Size | Density | | Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" | 2.2 | Large | hdpi | | Samsung Galaxy Tab 10" | 3.0 | X-Large | mdpi | | Asus Transformer Prime | 4.0 | X-Large | mdpi | | Motorola Xoom | 3.1/4.0 | X-Large | mdpi | N.B.: I have seen (and read) other posts on SO on this subject, e.g. Which Android devices should I test against? and What hardware devices do you test your Android apps on? but they don't seem very canonical. Maybe this should be marked community wiki?

  • How many hours a day (of the standard 8) do you actually work? [closed]

    - by someone
Possible Duplicate: How much do you [really] work a day When I started working (not so long ago), I was very conscientious about really working. If I didn't work for 10 minutes at a time, I felt like I was cheating. But as I started to look around me, I realized that I was the only one... and most of my coworkers were spending a big percentage of their time browsing the internet or playing solitaire. I started to slack off a little more than usual... while still basically getting all my work done. But while I do all that's required of me, and usually quickly, I no longer beg for work to fill up my spare time; I'm content to do what I'm told and play around when no one makes sure I'm busy enough. Which means that I'm often bored and underutilized. (Which I was even when I begged for work - people are pretty laid back about the workload and don't seem to realize how much I can get done if pushed to the fullest.) But I was just talking to a friend who graduated with me and also recently started working... and she came to me with the same concerns about slacking. She's working remotely, which means there are often gaps in communication when she can't really get anything done... And she's feeling guilty about it. Which made me rethink the whole thing... So, as workers, how many hours, out of the 8 standard average, are you actually working (honestly)? And, as bosses, how many hours do you expect your workers to work? And from an ethical standpoint, how much free time, or space out time, can workers have during the day without being considered to be "cheating" their office of labor and money?

  • How to insert large files in mysql database using php? [closed]

    - by anjan
Hi! I want to upload a large file of size 10M max to my mysql database. Using .htaccess i changed the PHP's own file upload limit to "10485760" = 10M, i am able to upload files upto 10M size without any problem. But i can not insert the file in database if it is more that 1M in size. i am using file_get_contents to read all file data and pass it to the insert query as a string to be inserted into a LONGBLOB field. But files with more than 1M size is not being added to database, though i can use print_r($_FILES) to examine that the file uploaded correctly. Any help will be appreciated and i will need it within next 6 hours. So, please help! best regards, Anjan * This is a duplicate of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/492549/how-can-i-insert-large-files-in-mysql-db-using-php *

  • Why does the order of the loops affect performance when iterating over a 2D array? [closed]

    - by Mark
Possible Duplicate: Which of these two for loops is more efficient in terms of time and cache performance Below are two programs that are almost identical except that I switched the i and j variables around. They both run in different amounts of time. Could someone explain why this happens? • What is the proper design of storing temporary users? [closed]

    - by Mendy
In SO site both real users and temporary users can add a new questions. I assume each user type has a different table. My question is how can I attach the question to the right user? I assuming the temp users have their own table from the following reasons: Temp users don't have all the data that real users have. like: email, password, and all users details. On the other hand, temp users are a lot more then real users. So it make more sense to have they in their own table.

  • Calculating a parabola: What am I doing wrong? [closed]

    - by Nils
    I was following this thread and copied the code in my project. Playing around with it turns out that it seems not to be very precise. Recall the formula: y = ax^2 + bx +c Since the first given point I have is at x1 = 0, we already have c=y1 . We just need to find a and b. Using: y2 = ax2^2 + bx2 +c y3 = ax3^2 + bx3 +c Solving the equations for b yields: b = y/x - ax - cx Now setting both equations equal to each other so b falls out y2/x2 - ax2 - cx2 = y3/x3 - ax3 - cx3 Now solving for a gives me: a = ( x3*(y2 - c) + x2*(y3 - c) ) / ( x2*x3*(x2 - x3) ) (is that correct?!) And then using again b = y2/x2 - ax2 - cx2 to find b. However so far I haven't found the correct a and b coeffs. What am I doing wrong?

  • Where is a good open source python project to be used as example? [closed]

    - by Andrea Francia
I'm looking for a python project to use as example to learning python. The project should have these features: is almost fully unit tested use consistently the code convention recommended by PEP 8 it's elements are almost fully documented Extra point features are: building, assembling, and release automation EDIT: The Question is too generic. I prepared a more specific question about the unit-test part.

  • MCV PHP Am I doing the Model right? [closed]

    - by Kosmo
    I'm trying to create a basic website using MVC in PHP to learn MVC. Its eventually going to be some sort of social networking website but right now I am trying to create a object that can create, delete, update members. What I've done so far for the Model is in the code below, I figure my Controller will take user input and build the array of data that are then passed to this Model. Am I designing this correctly? Should the Controller be the one building the Arrays? <?php class Connection { private $server; private $database; private $user; private $password; private $conn; function __construct($server, $database, $user, $password) { $this->server = $server; $this->database = $database; $this->user = $user; $this->password = $password; } function connect() { $this->conn = mysql_connect($this->server, $this->user, $this->password) or die(mysql_error()); if (!(mysql_select_db($this->database))) { throw new Exception("Could not connect to database!"); } } function deleteMember($memberId) { $queryString = "DELETE FROM Members WHERE MemberId=" . $memberId . ';'; if (!mysql_query($queryString)) { throw new Exception("Failed Deleting Member!"); } } function insertMember($columns) { $queryString = 'INSERT INTO Members'; $keys = '('; $values = '('; $count = 0; foreach($columns as $key => $value) { $keys .= $key; $values .= $value; if (!(++$count == count($columns))) { $keys .= ','; $values .= ','; } } $queryString .= $keys . ')' . ' VALUES ' . $values . ');'; if (!mysql_query($queryString, $this->conn)) { throw new Exception('Failed Inserting Member!'); } else { return mysql_insert_id(); } } function updateMember($memberId, $columns) { $queryString = 'UPDATE Members SET '; $count = 0; foreach($columns as $key => $value) { $queryString .= $key . '=' . $value; if (!(++$count == count($columns))) { $queryString .= ', '; } } $queryString .= ' WHERE MemberId=' . $memberId . ';'; if (!mysql_query($queryString)) { throw new Exception('Failed Updating Member'); } } function getMembers() { $queryString = "SELECT * FROM Members;"; $result = mysql_query($queryString); $memberArray = array(); $count = 0; while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { $memberArray[$count++] = "Member ID: " . $row['MemberId'] . " Name: " . $row['MemberName'] . " Email: " . $row['MemberEmail']; } return $memberArray; } function disconnect() { mysql_close($this->conn); } }

  • What is the best way to go about obfuscating Java code? [closed]

    - by Waltzy
Possible Duplicate: Best Java obfuscator ? Well, I'm planning on releasing a Jar into the world but would prefer if the code was not readably available to anyone with a Java Decompiler as I want to control access to the program with usernames / auth codes etc. After some Googling I haven't found any software to do this for me, so I was wondering what steps to take from here; if anyone can point me at any software or information on methodologies of obfuscation I would be grateful. Cheers again Stack Overflow.
