• Speed-up large number of files deletion on NTFS volumes

  Every now and then I need to delete a folder containing something like 500k files from an NTFS volume. I do this with Windows Explorer. Since NTFS journals all the service data changes each deletion is carried out serially and so the whole 500k files deletion takes ages. I remember when I did the same in FAT32 it ran uncomparably faster. Is there any way to speed up deletion of large number of files on NTFS volumes?

  Hello, after a lovely blue screen my vista 64 machine decided to reconfigure one of my drives to no longer be part of my raid volume. So now my raid fails as it only has one member disk. This happened to me about 6 months ago and I just changed the disk in question back to a raid disk and all was well. However I cant seem to find that option in my bios or raid config anymore :( Any help would be appreciated

• Ubuntu 12.04: Does grub support multidevice boot from btrfs?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) with grub 1.99. I installed on a RAID10 multidevice BTRFS partition. I thought that multidevice support is included in grub for a while but on boot I'm dropped to a initramfs shell, because it fails to mount root ("invalid argument"). This is actually the same message I get if I want to mount a btrfs volume without executing btrfs device scan. Therefore I wonder: Does Ubuntu's grub version even support boot from btrfs mutlidevice ?

• Stereo mix causing inaudible input in XP?

  I'm trying to record some of my work process in Camtasia using the stereo mix input. However, my headset microphone is quiet at the best of times, and no matter what combination of input and output volume settings I use, my voice is consistently inaudible. Know of a good fix for this? Should I be looking for a decent audio mixer--and if so, do you know of one that's as effective as it is free?

  I've just been listening to The Complete John Cage Edition Volume 18: The Choral Works 1 but the track listing is wrong. (N.B. I'm not a Cage genius, but a new twitter friend is and pointed this out to me). The CD comes from a label called Mode and the track listing is also wrong on the CD so it's not just a Spotify DB thing. What database do Spotify use for their track listings and what is the correct process for getting it corrected when there is an error?

  Hey I have to make a file system with an encrypted partition with on ubuntu server. something like Unencrypted: / - 10 GB /home - 10GB /var - 5GB -------------- Encrypted: /opt - 50GB This I can figure out in the setup, just partition as normal, setup /tmp as a encrypted volume with dm-crypt. However im not sure how to mirror this entire drive, so that if either failed i could still boot. and how will that affect the encrypted partition. Any help would be appreciated.

  I want to backup my AWS snapshots to a completely separate AWS account for additional security (if my AWS credentials were acquired someone could delete all my snapshots and volumes). But I'm a bit stumped on how to do this. There doesn't seem to be a way to store a volume or snapshot in S3 such that another user could access that data in s3 and store it in a separate AWS account. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to acheive this? Thanks

  How can I automatically zip a group of files into multiple zip files (say, 2mb in size for each file), and that each zip file is a stand-alone zip file? (i.e. not mult-volume zip files, that you can't lost any one of the files, otherwise you can't unzip) Is there any tools available to do so? • Bootable backup of a Mac without an HFS+ disk?

  How can I make a bootable backup of my Mac's internal hard drive to be restored using Disk Utility, without formatting my external destination drive as HFS+ (it's FAT32, of course)? Time Machine and SuperDuper both require that the volume where the backup is saved be HFS+ formatted. This looks helpful: http://developer.apple.com/macosx/backuponmacosx.html But it doesn't explain how to use FAT32 disk.

  Has anybody who administers email servers or spam filtering noticed that in last couple of weeks the spam volume has dropped significantly? Is there a chart provided by one of the major spam filtering companies? Edit: Based on our internal stats, although it varies, on the two weeks starting the day after Christmas (Sunday), spam seems to be coming in about half as much as it did before Christmas.

• VLC Dynamic Range compression multiple songs

  In my collection of music I have some songs which seem to be compressed nicely. But in addition to those I have songs which are overly quite compared to the louder compressed songs. So maybe the problem isn't compression but average volume. Would the Dynamic Range Compressor in VLC work for this type of problem or would I have better luck using external speakers and running it through a guitar compressor?

• Would it be possible to swap system restore points on different brands of computers?

  So I have a ThinkPad computer that I've installed a program called "Deep Freeze" which restores your computer to the "Frozen" state. I also have a Toshiba computer with no Deep Freeze on it. My question is that would it be possible to creat a system restore point on my Toshiba and then replace the system volume information folder with the one on the ThinkPad so I could restore to a point with no Deep Freeze? Would this work?

• Moving Sharepoint 2003 databases to a new SQL Server

This includes our Sharepoint databases, while looking into moving the databases I found the Microsoft documentation for moving Sharepoint 2007, however have not been able to find anything similar for Sharepoint 2003.   I store my music on an external hard drive, and play them with foobar2k. However, the drive letter changes, which usually means I need to rebuild a fairly large playlist every so often. I'm wondering if there's a way to reserve a drive letter for a specific external device (or type of device) by device ID or volume name, or if I'm better off using a NTFS mount point, and re-mounting the drive to a folder each time. I'm using either a Windows XP or 7 system, and the external drive is NTFS.

• Sound has stopped working after upgrading to Windows 8

  I upgraded my (fairly new, about 2 months old) computer to Windows 8 last night, and now the sound has stopped working across the entire machine. I have checked using multiple programs (iTunes, YouTube, World of Warcraft, etc) and multiple output devices (speakers and headset), checked the soundcard drivers (Asus Xonar DG 5.1), checked the volume mixer to ensure I wasn't just having a brainfart and had the sound muted, but nothing's working.   Possible Duplicate: Doing an rm -rf on a massive directory tree takes hours I'm running a simulation program on a computing cluster (Scientific Linux) that generates hundreds of thousands of atomic coordinate files. But I'm having a problem deleting the files because rm -rf never completes and neither does find . -name * | xargs r Isn't there a way to just unlink this directory from the directory tree? The storage unit is used by hundreds of other people, so reformatting is not an option. Thanks

• Store product data in session variable or access db every time?

  I have my database storing lots of information about products (year, name, release_date, volume, etc. etc.). I currently load all of the products once and store them in a session variable - right now there's only 8 products but the list will grow as time progresses. The reason why I did this was to (perhaps foolishly) save HDD reads every time the products page was accessed. Am I shooting myself in the foot by storing this information in the session?

I had a look around my local PC World today and only the more expensive drives explicitly state on the packaging that they were Mac compatible. Is this just because these products have been through Apple's hardware approval/testing programme, or do Mac's have some special requirement?

• Changing default playback device on Windows 8

  Previously, on Vista and Windows 7, changing the Default Playback device would occur instantly. For example, audio is coming out of my speakers, I right click the Volume Control, click Playback Devices then I select another device and click Set Default. Audio would be transferred immediately. Unfortunately, now, with Windows 8, I need to kill whatever process what outputting sound, and restart it for the change to take effect. Is there something that can be done about it so that changes are taken into account immediately?
