• Mac Management Without Permission and Security

- by Bart Silverstrim
I was going through some literature on managing OS X laptops and asked someone some questions about usage scenarios when using the MacBooks. I asked someone more knowledgeable than I about whether it was possible for my Mac to be taken over if I were visiting another site for a conference or if I went on a wifi network at a local coffee house with policies from an OS X Server with workgroup manager (either legit for the site or someone running a version of OS X Server on hardware they have hidden somewhere on the network), which apparently could be set up to do things like limit my access to Finder or impose other neat whiz-bang management features. He said that it is indeed possible for it to happen as it would be assigned via the DHCP server and the OS X server would assume my Mac is a guest and could hand out restrictions and apparently my Mac will happily accept them without notifying me or giving me an option, unlike Windows which I believe would need to be joined to a domain before it becomes "managed" by Active Directory. So my question is as network admins and sysadmins with users traveling with MacBooks, is there a way to reasonably protect your users from having their machines hijacked without resorting to just turning off networking all the time? Or isn't this much of a security hazard? What threat does this pose to the road warriors in your businesses?

• Android Software for the SysAdmin on the move.

- by GruffTech
So my company has over service through Verizon, and AT&T Service in the area is "shoddy" at its best, so i haven't been able to join the "iPhone party" like so many of my fellow SysAdmins have been able to. That being said, this week finally i phone i like has hit Verizon, the HTC Incredible. (I've been waiting for the Desire or Nexus One, but after seeing spec sheets and reviews, HTC Incredible comes out ahead anyway). So (finally) I'm looking for Android Apps that are "gotta-haves" for System Admins. I've found the bottom three, If there's others you prefer over these let me know. • MS Exchange -- running code against outbound email

- by user32680
I would like to know if using MS Exchange there is a way to run code against outbound emails. The code would need to trigger on emails sent to a specific domain, connect to a database, check for an email related to the email sent, and Carbon-copy that email to the related email. What I'm trying to do: When [email protected] gets an email, his auditor [email protected] gets CC'd. Jack is in a MSSQL DB table related to his auditor's email. Are there any samples of things like this being done?

• On an HTC Hero - with provider Orange in the UK - can one upgrade the OS?

- by user32648
Currently it's running Android 1.5 - I'd clearly prefer to be on 1.6, 2.0 or 2.1 - but there seems to be limited information on this available on the internet. If anyone can confirm whether it's been done before, what versions are compatible with the handset, and any problems, it'd be really useful. Aside - it's kind of poor that a phone sold in March 2010 only runs Android 1.5... :(

• Connecting to internet via phone on Linux

- by Bart van Heukelom
I have a Sony Ericsson C702 phone with a flat fee internet subscription (GPRS/UMTS). I'd like to connect my Linux (Kubuntu 9.04) laptop to internet via this phone, using bluetooth (I also have a cable connection but that's propietary, doubt it'll work). How can I do this, preferably via GUI / NetworkManager / the BT applet that comes with KDE? In Windows I use SE's PC suite software which works great, but is not available for Linux.

• I cannot install flash player, I am getting 1603 exit code

- by Naz
I am trying to install flash player silently, using a powershell script. I do not think it is being installed. I looked under "control panel-uninstall programs" I don't see flash player listed there. Also, I am printing the exit code for the process and it prints 1603 exit code, which is "fatal error during installation" As an experiment, I double click on the flash player .msi file, and it gave me 1722 error " Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. "

• Lexmark C532 error code won't go away

- by Paul Phillips
I can't get rid of error code 84 - Yellow PC unit missing. I've just replaced all 4 photoconductors with genuine Lexmark parts and now the error code keeps appearing. I've swapped the PC units around so know it's not a faulty unit. I've followed the suggestions in the online Lexmark manuals and even called the Lexmark helpline but to no avail. any suggestions? Printer was fine until it gave me a PC unit life warning and I renewed them. Thanks.

• adress-chunk: separate data stored in one collumn - into three (street, postal-code, town)

- by zero
hello dear community. Hello dear friends form all over the planet first of all - this is a great great forum. I like this place to share the ideas. It is so great to see such a supportive place - featuring the knowledge exchange! today i have the following thing to discuss: i want to separate the following data that are stored in one column of a calc-spreadsheet: See the following data: You see that there are the following categories:_ steet, postal-code, town All the data are stored in only one Colum; Well to be honest: i want to separate them into three colums steet, postal-code, town see the data: what can i do? note - you see that there are commas inbetween the enties: and besides this we see that we have a postal-code with four digits: that is a good thing. Perhaps we can use this as a marker that helps us to separate the data?! Perhaps See a data-sample! Here you can see some exceptions: eg. the town that has two words combinde with a "-" ... or somethims without any signs and characters... see the following... as an example: Max-Bader-Platz 1, 5620 Schwarzach im Pongau Pestalozzistraße 4, 9990 Nussdorf-Debant Schulstraße 4, 5162 Obertrum am See But i guess that this means no problem... What do you think about this? I am very very interested to get your opinion! i look forward to hear from you! regards see a snipped of the dataset - that is stored in one column -Goal: i want to separate the datas into three collumns... : Schulweg 6, 9871 Seeboden Khevenhüllerstraße 45, 4861 Schörfling Franz Xaver Rennstr.18, 6460 Imst Schulstraße 4, 5162 Obertrum am See Schulweg 6, 7432 Oberschützen Pestalozzistraße 4, 9990 Nussdorf-Debant Niederndorf bei Kufstein 53c, 6342 Niederndorf bei Kufstein Hauptschulstraße 18, 2183 Neusiedl an der Zaya Seeweg 14, 5202 Neumarkt am Wallersee Europaplatz 1, 8820 Neumarkt in Steiermark Schulstraße 7, 4212 Neumarkt im Mühlkreis Schulstraße 20, 4720 Neumarkt im Hausruckkreis Bahnhofstr. 10, 4872 Neukirchen an der Vöckla Schulstraße 5b, 4780 Schärding Reitbergstraße 2, 4311 Schwertberg Europaplatz 1, 2320 Schwechat Am Schulberg 5, 3931 Schweiggers Waidach 8, 6130 Schwaz Waidach 8, 6130 Schwaz Max-Bader-Platz 1, 5620 Schwarzach im Pongau Markt 29, 2662 Schwarzau im Gebirge Hofsteigstraße 68, 6858 Schwarzach Gmundner Straße 7, 4690 Schwanenstadt Mühlfeldstraße 1, 4690 Schwanenstadt Mainsdorferstraße 18, 8541 Schwanberg Jakob Stemer-Weg 3, 6780 Schruns Obere Umfahrungsstraße 16, 2432 Schwadorf bei Wien Battloggstraße 54, 6780 Schruns Schloss-Straße 19, 5020 Salzburg Schillerplatz 2, 8280 Fürstenfeld Erzherzog-Johann-Str. 400, 8970 Schladming Schulgasse 261, 8811 Scheifling i look forward to hear from you!! regards

• Use dns suffixes only on certain wireless networks?

- by eidylon
Hello all, quick question. I'm a software guy and networking is all black magic to me! I have a laptop which I use at home and at the office. In order to be able to more easily reference our servers at work, I have our domain name in the DNS suffixes on my TCP/IP settings on my wireless connection. This all works beautifully and I can reference our servers simply by name only. Now the problem... When I go home, it still has those suffixes in there, and I cannot access other servers because it appends the DNS suffixes to the server names. Is there a way I can set up DNS suffixes so that they are only applied when connected to a certain wireless network (I'm thinking by SSID).

• Password manager solution: Symbian based phone and a Linux machine (Windows is not important, but wo

- by Kent
Hi, I currently use KeePassX to manage my passwords on my Linux (Xubuntu) machine. It's nice to have all the passwords encrypted, but sometimes I'd like to be able to tell a password when I'm on the run. Therefore I'm looking for a solution which I can synchronize with my phone. I have a Nokia N82 which is a Symbian OS v9.2 based phone for the S60 3rd Edition platform with Feature Pack 1. I like an open source solution if it's possible. In case it isn't I wouldn't mind paying for a good solution. If Windows may be added to the synchronization mix it's nice, but it's absolutely not a primary requirement (I don't even have any computer running Windows).

• Hosting django backend for iPhone / Android app

- by Ashok Fernandez
I am looking to make an iPhone / Android app for my university using the Appcelerator Titanium framework. The app will rely heavily on a server backend which will pull information from other sites, figuring out what is relevant to the user then deliver the content. Some of the information is individual to the user (calendar data), other bits are updates frequently but are shared (bus timetables) and others are static and the same for everyone (magazine articles). I was going to use django as I am fairly proficent in python so I thought it would save time. My question is, which hosting services do you recommend to host the server backend? I am expecting about 9000 people to use the app with very random spikes in traffic, but unfortunately I have very little to go on at this stage. I have heard a lot about Webfaction, is it suitable for something like this or am I likely to need something bigger? I don't really want to fork out for a VPS at this stage. What about Amazons EC2? Would that be more suitable than Webfaction? Sorry for the fairly open ended question, Im sort of new to this so I open to all suggestions.

• Is there such a thing as an IP femtocell, and what does it do?

- by The Journeyman geek
My dad mentioned a co-worker suggested using a device, that might use CDMA to route calls through IP to save costs on a certain overseas project we're on- since our home base is quite far from there. I've never heard of such a device, so if it does exist, I'm wondering, if it's specific to particular ISPs, or if you can just pick one off the shelf, plug it into an arbitrary Internet connection, and make calls using it and a cellphone of some sort? As you can tell, details are sketchy, so... if such a device doesn't exist, saying so might be a right answer ;)

• Code deploy system [closed]

- by Turnaev Evgeny
Currently we deploy code to servers in a various ways: freebsd package freebsd ports part of config files and static just svn up'ed and a symlink is changed to new upped folder The distribution of freebsd packages to target servers is done through custom tool that uses ssh. I am looking for a code deploy system that will allow: deploy several packages (freebsd or linux) atomic (ether deploy all or none of them to server) can save a history of last stable version - so in case of bad deploy i can easily rollback to last working version all servers ease deployment of config and static files - and integrate those into atomic deploy/rollback system. should work with freebsd or linux (apt-get system)

• Nexus One vs Xperia X10

- by Mark
Trying to decide which phone to get; I think I've narrowed it down to one of these two. The Xperia X10 seems pretty sweet except for one drawback: the phone/voice quality seems to be lacking. I haven't heard anything about the quality on the Nexus though. Otherwise they seem pretty neck and neck. What do you guys think?

• What are the reasons to marry a carrier?

- by Bohdan Trotsenko
Probably because I live in Europe, I cannot understand 1 phenomenon in US cellphones business. iPhone is bound to AT&T, HTC EVO 4G is for Sprint, Droid goes with Verison etc... Businesses do that. I guess they do that for a reason. If I were a phone manufacturer, why should I make a phone available for a single carrier only?

• excel - merge cells including a zip code

- by evanmcd
Hi all, I have the need to merge a bunch of cells that comprise an address (street, city, state, zip) into a single cell. No problem except with the zip code. The zip cell has only 4 digits for any zip that starts with 0. So, I change it's format to be Special - Zip Code. That makes the cell itself show the beginning 0, but the merged cell still does not show the leading 0. Does anyone know how to get the leading 0 in the merged column? Thanks Evan
