WinZip bombed on us while trying to zip a large dataset, and 7zip doesn't have the Encryption feature. Is there a better tool out there?
Thanks,
Bupesh
Which is a better solution? Zeacom's Unified Communications or Microsoft's Unified Communications (UC)? Which one has your company implemented? I heard Microsoft coined the term "Unified Communications" but they were slow to jumpstart it... Other companies such as Zeacom have been working on and improving on their UC product since years ago. But Microsoft is such a standard. Which one would you go with?
I have large text files with space delimited strings (2-5). The strings can contain "'" or "-". I'd like to replace say the second space with a pipe. What's the best way to go?
Using sed I was thinking of this:
sed -r 's/(^[a-z'-]+ [a-z'-]+\b) /\1|/' filename.txt
Any other/better/simpler ideas?
Thank you
Is there a way to export the database schema in well formed XML of a MS 2000 SQL Server. I'm looking for just the structure not the data and the more detailed the better. The XML may be used in a migration processes. I'm more familiar with MySQL then with SQL Server so please be detailed if you have time.
Thanks
Can anyone recommend a USB 3.0 adapter for my older Dell server? It does not have PCI express (PCIe) so I was looking for PCI or PCIX. I have been burned in the past installing "desktop" class drives on servers (i.e. blue screens under heavy load) so I would rather pay more to get something reliable.
We are hoping to get better speed on our backups to an external drive, even 10% improvement would be worth it.
Hello,
How to check how much memory a solaris process consumes? I'd like both total address space allocated and the amount that is resident in RAM.
I tried summing pmap output with some awk script, but it was an ugly hack. Is there a better way to script it?
I have heard it suggested that we set up a special email address, with it's only purpose being to be harvested. Then blacklisting every sender that targets this address.
I'm wondering:
if anyone else has tried this
how do you go about doing it (ie - put the address in a hidden field on your website - or better ways?)
does it work?
Is there anything to watch out for when trying this (ie. legitimate senders using harvested addresses?)
Hi, we have some issues with a client-server based application and we would like to better understand client-server communication without going to the software company that sold the application. At least we would like to perform the analysis in parallel.
Can you suggest to me a dummy proof application that we can easily get and install to analyze client-server traffic?
Many thanks!
We need to assign each subscriber to our site a unique email address that will barely be used. What is the best way to do this? We could host it but may be better to be hosted elsewhere.
My question is pretty self-explanatory. I prefer firefox, but my organization send out intranet links that simply work better in IE. Is there a way to do this?
I'm using Arch Linux + xmonad + urxvt bundle and trying to resolve the conflict between xmonad and urxvt. Better to explain with shots:
Firstly, open the terminal and get some full-length output.
Secondly, create another window, which squeezes the first.
And, finally, close it to find out that half of the output disappeared.
Sometimes it behaves correctly, sometimes not. Tried to find out why, but failed.
Many thx in advance!
Here is one way, just see the link

does any one else knows a better way?
The main file shares on our network are currently hosted by old Apple XServes. I had planned to replace some of these with Windows shares as I have better hardware available but have been told this is likely to cause issues with some of our Mac users.
What sort of issues am I likely to run into and what are the recommended ways of hosting general file storage in a mixed OS (Windows, OSX, occasionally linux) environment?
I am thinking of getting a 256MB server on XEN but not sure is it capable of handling this setup: Varnish + Nginx + Eaccelerator + PHP-FM + MySQL + Mail/FTP?
I've tried this setup on OpenVZ and it was partly disastorous, especially with varnish in the equation, i've heard that XEN is better at memory management, sometimes shaving off 50mb or more in comparison to OpenVZ setups...
if anyone has any helpful suggestions / input please let me know
thanks

I have a Samsung SyncMaster T190 LCD monitor which I've had for about 5 years. It hissed slightly then went dim (readable but the top half of the screen is less bright).
I'm pretty sure that after 5 years of service it's just got to the point where something's burned out, so my question is can I repair this myself, or should I just get a new monitor. I'm currently a student so self repair would be a better option if cost effective.
We have a number of shared computers that users never seem to log out of. Am I correct that there is no built in functionality to automatically log off console sessions after an idle timeout? I've seen two suggestions: a logoff screensaver, and a scheduled task with an idle trigger. Will the idle trigger work if only the session is idle, but the computer is in use with a different session? Is there a better way to go about this? Thanks,
Hi everybody,
i was planning to buy a SAS system made of two 15k RPM disks in Raid 0 configuration to give a boost to my s.o. and my apps... but after i saw that article on Coding Horror, i've started to thinking if a new 2nd generation SSD could do the same job, or even better...
Does anybody have any information to help me decide?
Once a year I am making a clean install on windows, in order to keep my system fast. After posting a question on making a bootable windows usb with exe programs where I was adviced to make a disk image, a new question rose.
What is the difference in making a disk image and performing a clean install on windows? Which is better in terms of speed, general performance, value for time and transfering between different computers?
I've been using itunes streaming (in part cause its easy) to access my music collection between two windows PCs. I'm half certain it sounds kinda 'flat' so i'm wondering, what bitrate it uses, and format - it sounds fine off a PMP, and even better on a PC, so i assume i can tell the difference.
I switch between three languages input methods frequently, sometimes in the same typing session. The default shortcut on a Macintosh seems to be to set keyboard shortcuts for previous/next language (I hit opt-cmd-space to go to previous language) and if you're more than bi-lingual you have to cycle until you find the one for you.
The ideal would be something like hitting fn-e for English, fn-j for Japanese and fn-g for German, but anything better than the current state would be a great improvement.
With the recent problems that McAfee customers have had over the last week there has been lots of opinion that not only should the AV vendors have better testing but customers should test AV signatures before deploying.
Is this feasible? If you are doing this already do you take other measures to minimise exposure to malware while you are testing?
I am currently trying to figure out which solution would be best for software renting service (with proper licensing and stuff). I know its kinda stupid and so on, but I just have to develop it.
Long story short - user can connect to a virtual machine (with windows guest os) using vnc and use some specific software for some specific time (eg., 1 hour).
I have already considered VirtualBox, Xen and some other, but maybe somebody has a better idea.
Thanks.
I want to save the images from a page in Firefox that have been open for a couple of days. The problem is that neither the page nor the images are available anymore online. The images where dynamically generated and not cached.
The only way I can think of is by making a screenshot and then cutting out each invidual image. Isn't there a better way of getting the data from the browsers memory?
I'm a trainer, basically. I'd like to find some sort of Excel-based training that's under the creative commons, or another awesome license.
I want to use it to train others, and make it better.
If this doesn't exist, I may have to write it. Because it should.
