• Access to variables in an asp.net user control vs an include file

  I've asked this question before but couldn't get the answer I was looking for so I'm going to try it again. I'm translating pages from old asp to asp.net and I don't want to do this any other way so I really just want to know if this can be done. In asp, I'd assign a variable on one page <% myVar = "something" %> I could assign many variables here and then use an include <!--#include file="Test2.aspx"--> then in test2 file, I could access all the variables without having to pass all the variables into the control or declaring them again, like <% myVar = "something else" %> I want to do this the dot net way but I have some thirty variables on the page and i don't want to pass a bunch into the user control and I don't want to have to keep declaring the same variables. All I really want to know is if there is some way to replicate the behavior above in asp.net?

• WCF without NET 3.0

  Hello there, Does anyone tell me if it's possible to use WCF without .NET 3.0? Our company develops a 3-tier client-server end-user solution based on .Remoting. One of the limitation of our project is using .NET 2.0. Unfortunately .NET 3.0 framework is too large to be included in our installation package and I don't know if MS license allows this. But WCF might helps us to drastically reduce our efforts in some tasks. Does anyone have a chance to use WCF from Mono? Thanks in advance -- Murat

  I have an ASP.NET web application(webforms,not MVC) developed in VS 2008 and i have implemented ASP.NET web forms URL routing by following this link http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/051309-1.aspx#postadlink It works pretty good when i run it on the Visual studion IDE.But does not works when i created a site under my IIS (IIS 5.1 in XP) and deployed the same files there.I have set ASP.NET version as 2.0 in the Properties window of my application too.But does not work.   I need to parse plain Win32 DLL/Exe and need to get all imports and exports from it and to show it on console or GUI(say Win Forms). Is it possible to parse Win32 DLL/Exe in C#.NET, read its export table,import table and get managed types from it. As its unmanaged PE(.NET doesn't allows you to convert unmanaged PE files to managed .NET assemblies, only it generates COM managed assemblies). So how to parse export and import tables of PE files and take all methods(signatures from it) in managed form.(e.g if char* as argument, it should display as IntPtr)

• Changing system colors for a single application (Windows, .NET)

  I know I should generally avoid messing up with such system settings, but my application do already use nonstandard colors and I have no influence on that. I would like to be able to add standard .NET controls in some places, but their colors do not match. I would like to have a hack that would replace system colors for this one application. One more important thing to note is that it is a .NET application. My (incomplete) ideas so far were: To create a proxy User32.dll library with replaced GetSysColor, but it would be very tedious (731 functions to be redirected, 1 to be replaced) and I do not know how to force my application to use that particular copy. To intercept somehow invocations to GetSysColors (unfortunatelly it is somewhere in the CLR I think). To modify somehow .NET class SystemColors (in memory? is it possible?). Do you have any idea, what is the best (and complete) way to achieve this?

• Security exception with ASP.NET AJAX toolkit

  I've got an ASP.NET WebForms app that I've written, which uses the ASP.NET AJAX Toolkit. I've put the MultiView control onto the web form, and it worked fine, when I had it under Vista. Well, I had to replace my machine (HD failed) and I went to Windows 7 Ultimate. I tried copying the ASP.NET app from the system (before it finally failed for good) and put it onto the Windows 7 machine. I can bring up the app fine, go to all pages, but the one with these controls on it. When I do I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. What's going on? How do I fix it?

On of the most common tasks I need to do is create SEO-friendly urls, which in the past has meant doing some url rewriting to build the querystring into the directory path. for example: www.somesite.com/productid/1234/widget rather than: www.somesite.com?productid=1234&name=widget What method do I use to accomplish this in ASP.Net-MVC?   uploading multiple files from client to server with asp.net I have been looking at the asp.net upload control but that is for one file (unless someone knows a better way to do it). http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.fileupload.aspx For what I want to do I don't even really need a browse. I know the files off of the client are at a certain location. Is it possible to create a collection of *HttpPostedFile*s and upload those? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.httppostedfile.aspx I don't think it is possible but would be glad to be proven wrong. Is there a different asp.net method or control that will easily allow uploading multiple files from client to server?

  I have a Library ( DLL ) that has a method with the following: var masterKey = Registry. LocalMachine. OpenSubKey("SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Dynamics\\5.0\\"); When running this method in an WinForms applicaiton, masterKey is not null and when running this in asp.net masterKey is null! I've checked the executing user with WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name and the same user is executing both applications. The asp.net application is executed in visual studio ( debug: F5 ) and so is the WinForms application. How come I cannot read the key in asp.net?

  I have been searching the web for some time for a solid FFmpeg wrapper for C#/.NET. But I have yet to come up with something useful. I have found the following three projects, but all of them apears to be dead in early alpha stage. FFmpeg.NET ffmpeg-sharp FFLIB.NET So my question is if anyone knows of a wrapper project that is more mature? I am not looking for a full transcoding engine with job queues and more. Just a simple wrapper so I do not have to make a command line call and then parse the console output, but can make method calls and use eventlisteners for progress. And please feel free to mention any active projects, even if they are stil in the early stages.

  I have an ASP.NET application where there's a few ASP.NET buttons and several plain HTML buttons. Anytime there's a textbox where a user hits enter, the ASP.NET button trys to submit the form. I know I can change the defaultButton, but I don't want there to be any default button. I just want it so when the user presses enter it doesn't do anything. I've tried setting defaultButton to blank, but that doesn't seem to work and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere on the web. What's the code to make this happen? Thanks.

  bla.exe (application alias) points to a .net application called wpfapp1.exe. When i add a key&value to eg. this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\bla.exe and then start application using Run - bla.exe it starts however when i start application using windows search i get an "windows cannot find wpfapp1.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I have successfully identified problem: this error only occurs to .net applications while native one start normally (eg. firefox.exe). So is there any .net config that i've missed during development?

• ado.net slow updating large tables

  The problem: 100,000+ name & address records in an access table (2003). Need to iterate through the table & update detail with the output from a 3rd party dll. I currently use ado, and it works at an acceptable speed (less than 5 minutes on a network share). We will soon need to update to access 2007 and its 'non jet' accdb format to maintain compatability with clients. I've tried using ado.net datsets, but updating the records takes hours! We process 5-10 of these tables per day - so this cannot be a solution. Any ideas on the fastest way to update individual records using ado.net? Surely we didn't take such a hugh backward step with ado.net? Any help would be appreciated.

  I have an application that runs on both C# .Net and Java. Two entirely separate but identical code bases. The problem Im having is formatting date and numbers. For example: A user running the .Net variant is inputting a date and a format string. The 26th of April 1986 is formatted 1986-04-26. The actual date, along with the format string, is serialized to an XML file. Later another user running the Java variant opens said XML file and looks at the date. I want them to look the same. Whats the best approach here? There doesnt seem to be a one-to-one mapping between Java and .Nets format strings. Should I limit the possible formats to a selection I know I can represent fully in both .Net and Java?

  I have an application I am converting over from vb6 to vb.net 2.0/3.5. Using Subsonic 2.2 and the vb.net Interop Toolkit 2005. Cannot seem to get the .net form using subsonic to work inside the interop environment. It keeps saying it cannot find the subsonic service provider in the app.config. But I know it is there. Has anyone used these two toolkits together successfully? Will subsonic even work inside the interop environment in that way? Thanks in advance!

What I am doing is the following: string filepath = HttpContext.Request.PhysicalApplicationPath; filepath += "/Content/Xsl/pubmed.xslt"; string xsl = System.IO.File.ReadAllText(filepath); However, half way down this thread on forums.asp.net there is the following quote HttpContext.Current is evil and if you use it anywhere in your mvc app you are doing something wrong because you do not need it. Whilst I am not using "Current", I am wondering what is the best way to determine the absolute physical path of a file in MVC? For some reason (I don't know why!) HttpContext doesn't feel right for me. Is there a better (or recommended/best practice) way of reading files from disk in ASP.Net MVC? Thanks for your help, Robin

  Hi all, I've installed HTTP Activation and Non-HTTP Activation IIS's features for Framework.NET 3.0 under WCF Activation feature. I'm trying to remove http and https bindings (under default Web Site) from IIS Manager and leave others (net.tcp, net.msmq, etc.) but if I close and re-open IIS manager I not found any icons in the right panel (Feature View).   Hi, I have a byte[] with some data in it, I would like to write this byte array AS-IS to the log file using log4.net. The problems that i am facing is that There are no overload for byte[] in TextWriter, so even implementing an IObjectRenderer is of no use. I dont have access to the underlying Stream object of Log4.net Also tried converting byte[] into char[] still when i write it, it adds an extra byte. Is this even possible with Log4.net.   We currently have a .NET 2.0 web app that uses forms authentication via cookies. Associated with this web app is an old VB6 client application that has its own login system. Currently, the users have to login to the VB6 app, and then when they click on a link, need to authenticate themselves again with the .NET forms authentication system. I'm wondering if it's possible to create a client side .NET application, give it the username and password, and set the forms authentication cookie (without the browser being opened). Is that possible??

  Hi, We use the asp.net UpdatePanel and the ScriptManager/ScriptManagerProxy for ajax related functionality; reducing full page refreshes and calling WCF Services respectively. we also use jQuery and plugins for some parts of the UI. We have had some issues with javascript library related conflicts, but have come across some posts indicating that there is a lot more overhead using the UpdatePanel. I have found some limited reference to UFrame: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/uframe.aspx www.codeplex.com/uframe Is this a commercially viable replacement for the asp.net UpdatePanel? We use a ScriptManagerProxy to reference WCF services and easily create and use a proxy to call the various WCF service methods. Would using jQuery ajax be a more efficient solution here? We have got this working well on various browsers but now seem to be getting some security related issues (as seen in FF Firebug: Access to restricted URI denied" code: "1012) which seem to have started since using jQuery a lot more. Is it possible/viable to not use ASP.NET Ajax at all?
