  I'm using Sphinx through Thinking Sphinx in a Ruby on Rails project. When I create seed data and all the time, it's quite verbose, printing this: using config file '/Users/pupeno/projectx/config/development.sphinx.conf'... indexing index 'user_delta'... collected 7 docs, 0.0 MB collected 0 attr values sorted 0.0 Mvalues, 100.0% done sorted 0.0 Mhits, 99.6% done total 7 docs, 159 bytes total 0.042 sec, 3749.29 bytes/sec, 165.06 docs/sec Sphinx 0.9.8.1-release (r1533) Copyright (c) 2001-2008, Andrew Aksyonoff for every record that is created or so. Is there a way to suppress that output?

• mysql LAST_INSERT_ID() used with multiple records INSERT statement

  Hello, If i insert multiple records with a loop that executes a single record insert, the last insert id returned is, as expected, the last one... but if i do a multiple records insert statement: INSERT INTO people (name,age) VALUES('William',25),('Bart',15),('Mary',12); let's say the three above are the first records inserted in the table...after the insert statement i expected last insert id to return 3, but it returned 1...the first insert id for the statement in question... So can someone please confirm if this is the normal behavior of LAST_INSERT_ID() in the context of multiple records INSERT statements...so i can base my code on it thanks :)

• How to stream a WAV file?

  I'm writing an app where I record audio and upload the audio file over the web. In order to speed up the upload I want to start uploading before I've finished recording. The file I'm creating is a WAV file. My plan was to use multiple data chunks. So instead of the normal encoding (RIFF, fmt , data) I’m using (RIFF, fmt , data, data, ..., data). The first issue is that the RIFF header wants the total length of the whole file, but that is of course not known when streaming the audio (I’m now using an arbitrary number). The other problem is that I'm not sure if it's valid since Audacity doesn't recognise the file, and Windows Media Player opens the file but plays only a very small part. I've been reading WAV specs but haven’t found an answer. Any suggestions?

• Doctrine SQL Server uniqueidentifier isn't cast as char or nvarchar when retrieved from the database

  When I retrieve a record from the database which has a column of type "uniqueidentifier", Doctrine fills it with "null" rather than the unique id from the database. Some research and testing has brought this down to a PDO/dblib driver issue. When directly querying via PDO, null is returned in place of the unique id. For reference, http://trac.doctrine-project.org/ticket/1096, has a bit on this, however, it was updated 11 months ago with no comment for resolution. A way around this, as mentioned at http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=24752&edit=1, is to cast the column as a char. However, it doesn't seem Doctrine exposes the native field type outside of generating models which makes it a bit hard to detect uniqueidentifier types and cast them internally when building the sql query. Has anyone found a workaround for this?

• Capturing WPF Vector Information BEFORE it Renders to Screen

  I'm trying to "capture" or record the vector display information of a WPF (maybe Silverlight) application and play it back. However, instead of capturing bitmaps of what is rendered, I would like to capture the vector information BEFORE it gets rendered so that I can play it back at different resolutions without loss of quality. Ideally, I'd like to do this without having to add assemblies into my app (but willing to do so if necessary). I've looked into the WPF rendering pipeline and cannot find an appropriate starting point (or, stated differently, I couldn't figure it out). Maybe the VisualTreeHelper class?

• What information do you capture when your software crashes in the field?

  I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. • Extending ClaimsIdentity in MVC3

  I've got my claims set-up with MVC3 using azure and everything is going well. What I need to do now is extend the Claims Identity that's in the current thread / http context and add my own information (DOB, Address.. that sort of stuff) so my question is - where is the best place to do this? any examples would be great.. I presume that when the user is authenticated id then have to go to the DB and pull back the relevant record for the user then add it to the custom Claims Identity object? cheers. ste.

• Database design: How should I add an information which can apply to several tables

  I am constructing a database System using Mysql, this will be an application of about 20 tables. The system contains information on farmers, we work with organic certification and need to record a lot of info for that. In my system, there are related parent-child tables for farmers, producing years and fields/areas - it's a simple representation of the real world in which farmers farm crops on their fields. I now need to add several status flags for each one of these levels: a farmer can be certified, or his field can be, or the specific year can be; each of these flags has several states and can occur a number of times. The obvious solution to this would be to add a child table to every one of these tables, and define the states there. What I wonder if there is an easier way to do this to avoid getting to many tables? Where/how would be best practise to keep that data?

Assume that I know the order of the keys, i.e. I have a list of "labels": labels = ['a', 'b', 'c'] What's the most efficient way to compute this matrix? I can compute the statistic for all pairs like this: result = [] for elt1, elt2 in itertools.product(labels, labels): result.append(compute_statistic(data[elt1], data[elt2])) But I want result to be a n by n matrix, corresponding to "labels" by "labels".   I have a table, tblTags which works in much the same way as StackOverflows tagging system. When I view a tags page, let's say the tag Tutorial I want to display the 10 tags before and after it in alphabetical order. So if we are given the tag Tutorial of ID 30 how can we return a record set in the order resembling: Tap Tart > Tutorial Umbrellas Unicorns Xylaphones I have thought of ways of doing this, badly, in my opinion as they involve retrieving ugly amounts of data. I'm not sure if it's possible to do something along the lines of (pseudo): SELECT RANGE(0 - 30) FROM tblTags ORDER BY Name ASC But how do you know the position of the tutorial tag in the list in an efficient manner without traversing the entire list until you find it? I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with LINQ if it makes any difference, SQL queries or LINQ would be great answers, thanks!

  I have a SQL 2008 table with a field called RecDate of type DateTimeOffset. For a given record the value is '2010-04-01 17:19:23.62 -05:00' In C# I create a DataTable and fill it with the results of "SELECT RecDate FROM MyTable". I need to get the milliseconds, but if I do the following the milliseconds are always 0: DateTimeOffset dto = DateTimeOffset.Parse(dt.Rows[0][0].ToString()); What is the proper way to get the value in the RecDate column into the dto variable? • Cakephp, an elegant solution to quantities?

  Hi, I have a shopping cart system in Cakephp, this table has all your usual maguffins: user_ids, product_ids, option_lists ect. It also has quantity. I currently have some awful nested loops to check if the record is the same as any in there, if so add one to the quantity. If not add a new cart item. This loop has to check associated list items and product options, so it goes quite deep. What I'm wondering is if there is a more elegant way of checking to see if two cart items in a database are similar (everything except for quantity). Cheers!

• PHP REMOTE_ADDR and secure sessions

  One of the ways I have used to make securer sessions in the past is to also record the clients IP address and user agent at the handshake. Each time the client moves a page and calls session_start() I also check that the IP address and user agent stored is still the same to prevent hiijacking. But if someone is connecting from say a company network then all the users will probably have the same external static IP address and they could also really easily be using the same user agent. Is there other metrics I can use which are local only to the physical machine? Thanks

• Is NoSQL ideal to store stats?

  I'm not terribly familiar with NoSQL systems, but I remember reading a while back that they are ideal to handle statistical data. Since I'm about to start writing code that will record data like "how many users were registered on each day", I was thinking I could use this as an opportunity to learn more about NoSQL if it fits the bill. If NoSQL is indeed ideal for this, could you provide me with some information as to why? And which specific systems are best suited for this particular need? Thanks!

  Hi I want to conduct search on a particular column of a table in such a way that returning result set should satify following 2 conditions: Returning result set should have records whose 90% of the characters matches with the given search text. Returning result set should have records whose 70% of the consecutive characters matches with the given search text. It implies that when 10 character word Sukhminder is searched, then: it should return records like Sukhmindes, ukhminder, Sukhmindzr, because it fulfils both of the above mentioned conditions. But it should not return records like Sukhmixder because it does not fulfil the second condition. Likewise, It should not return record Sukhminzzz because it does not fulfil the first condition. I am trying to use Full Text Search feature of SQL Server. But, could not formulate the required query yet. Kindly reply ASAP.

• Override Django inlineformset_factory has_changed() to always return True

However if I don't change any of the data then the data is not updated. i.e. only entries which are changed go through the for loop to be saved. I guess this makes sense as there is no point saving data if it has not changed. However I need to go through and save every object in the form regardless of whether it has any changes on not. So my question is how do I override this so that it goes through and saves every record whether it has any changes or not? Hope this makes sense Thanks

• SQL Compare-Like tool for Oracle?

  We're a .NET team which uses the Oracle DB for a lot of reasons that I won't get into. But deployment has been a bitch. We are manually keeping track of all the changes to the schema in each version, by keeping a record of all the scripts that we run during development. Now, if a developer forgets to check-in his script to the source control after he ran it - which is not that rare - at the end of the iteration we get a great big headache. I hear that SQL Compare by Red-Gate might solve these kind of issues, but it only has SQL Server support. Anybody knows of a similar tool for Oracle? I've been unable to find one.

• Processing variable number of form fields

  I am working on a form which displays information about orders. Each order has a unique id, but they are not necessarily sequential on the form. Also, the number of fields can vary (one field per row on the form). The input into the form will not be mapped straight into the database, but will be added to the current value in the database, and then saved. An example of the form is in the picture below - the callout on the right shows the id for each row. I know how to generate the form like this, but I can't work out how I can easily process each of these rows reliably. I also know how to give each of the fields a unique identifier, like name="row-23", but how can I translate that name so that I can update the related record in the database?

• Best means to store data locally when offline

  I am in the midst of writing a small program (more to experiment with vs 2010 than anything else) Despite being an experiment it has some practical use for our local athletics club. My thought was to access the DB (currently online) to download the current members and store locally on a laptop (this is a MS sql table, used to power the club's website). take the laptop to the event (yes there ARE places that don't have internet coverage), add members to that days race (also a row from a sql table (though no changes would be made to this), record results (new records in 3rd table) Once home, showered and within internet access again, upload/edit the tables as per the race results/member changes etc. So I was thinking i'd do something like write xml files locally with the data, including a field to indicate changes etc? If anyone can point me in a direction i would appreciate it...hell if anyone could tell me if this has a name, I'd appreciate it.

So this means we can have 1000's of cameras sending data 24X7 for recording. We will store data for over 7 / 14 / 30 days depending on the package. Per day if a camera is sending data to the server then it will store 1.5GB. So that means there is a traffic of 1.5GB / day / camera Total monthly 45GB / month / camera (Data + bandwidth for one camera) Please let me know the most cost effective way to get this data stored? • Care to be taken when serving static content (JS, CSS, Media) from different domain?

  Let me try to explain by example. Say website is hosted at example.com (NOT www.example.com). In order to serve static content cookie-free, I've chosen to use a different domain example-static.com. Now, lets consider that my static content is currently served like this: http://example.com/js/script.js http://example.com/css/style.css http://example.com/media/image.jpg ** Now I create a CNAME record aliasing example-static.com to my main domain i.e. example.com so that the static content is served as such: http://example-static.com/js/script.js http://example-static.com/css/style.css http://example-static.com/media/image.jpg ** Is that all I have to do? Will all browsers execute JavaScript files and load web fonts without any security concerns? OR should I be using some .htaccess rules to modify header information and the like? PS: It would be great if you can provide what rules should be added, if need be.

  I have a website, which has numerous subdirectories already. (All existing in server's filesystem) I want to create new "virtual" sub-dirs with htaccess, but I only want the htaccess rule work for directories, listed in DB, and not existing in filesystem. i.e. File system has: /dir1/ & /dir2/ MySQL database has record for 'dir3' & 'dir4' And I want: A: mysite.com/dir1/ and mysite.com/dir2/ display existing old content B: mysite.com/dir3/ and mysite.com/dir4/ display content from MySQL provided by PHP sctipt via redirect like: mysite.com/myscript.php?dir=dir3 C: mysite.com/dir5/ display 404 error (Dir does not exist in DB nor in Database) Basically I want .htaccess to work like this: IF DIR Exists in DB - apply the rewrite rule and show content from myscript.php?dir=DIR ELSE don't apply any rule. I can create a separate php script, which can return 0/1 when given dir name exist in DB or not, but how do I make mod_rewrite get the data from that script? Is it possible with htaccess/PHP at all?
