• What is the best free service to host images and mp3 files?

  I am making an educational social software silverlight application. I would like users to be able to point the application to a URL with text, images, and audio files which they have created. Many users will not have their own website to do this, so we are looking for a free service they can use to upload, and manage their own text/image/audio content. What is the best free service for non-technical users to upload and make available text, images and audio? For instance, sites.google.com allows you to upload pictures and access them via http so that would work, but that is more about making a website. For this purpose we just need the ability to upload files, without the website creation tools.

• Possible to install Xmonad on Ubuntu separate from Gnome?

  I just downloaded Xmonad from the repository on my Ubuntu 10.04 box, but when I log out and try to log back in using Xmonad instead Gnome, it doesn't work. I just get the login screen background image and a mousepointer, and nothing else. Right-clicking does nothing, no menus or anything. Key combo's like Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Z, and Ctrl-Alt-Delete do nothing either. Left the computer in this state for 30 minutes while I went to the grocery store, but it was still hung when I returned and I had to hard-reboot it. A Google search returned a few sites showing how to configure Xmonad to work with Gnome, but I'm afraid to try this since I don't want to risk borking my Gnome installation, at least not until I've had a chance to learn Xmonad a bit. Is it possible to run Xmonad independently of Gnome? If so, anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how to fix it?

• Routing different domains on a VPS

  We just went from shared hosting to a VPS server. We have several domain names that we have pointing to our dns, but they all point to the root of the server. What I would like now is a setup where every domain name gets its own map so we can run different sites on the VPS server. Like: www.example.com points to: /var/www/example.com www.imapwnu.com points to: /var/www/imapwnu.com First of all, is this possible? Second, I have root SSH access and Webmin, on a LAMP server running on Ubuntu. Webmin doesnt have Bind9 (I dont know if I need that, some forums pointed me towards something called bind). • Does scheduling recycling app pool in IIS7 help the server conserve memory better?

  Hello, I have a VPS (IIS7 with Win 2008) It's got: 40 websites and a SQL Server 2008 powering them with only 2 Gigs of RAM. None of the sites are mission critical, they are all just demos. I often have ram issues on the server because each site has does caching and generally uses a lot of memory. Would it make sense to set the application pools to recycle every 3 hours? I'm sure this would free up any memory leaks or processes left "hanging" Are there any other tips on this? Thank you very much!, Aron

• Issues with FTP on my server

  I installed FTP on my windows 2003 box I created a FTP site on a ipaddress, I am not allowing anonymous access. I created a user that has access to the folder c:\ftptest connecting to my server using filezilla shows: connectiong to -0.0.0.0 connection established, waiting for welcome message could not connect to server I tried both active and passive modes. The port on the server is open i.e. TCP 21 I can connect to other FTP sites so my locla firewall isnt' the issue. (now I know why sys admin work is so fun!)

  Is there a list of common ip addresses used by domain squatters (the ip addresses of the sites they resolve the domains to)? I have a list of domains and I need to remove most squatted/parked domains from the list, I can do that in a perl script (that currently removes dead domains) but I need the IP addresses the squatted domains resolve to so I can remove them as well. I know there are spam/phishing/malware blacklists available, does anyone know of a squatter blacklist? I can't find one using Google. EDIT: I am trying to remove dead domains from a list, I can already remove domains that don't resolve but I need to remove squatted domains as well so I need a list of ip addresses squatted domains resolve to so I can remove them.

• Making internal website available publicly (Win 2008 Server)

  I have an IIS 7 web site that is running on a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) VMWare on a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) Host on my local network. My router is a Firebox XEdge and it has port 80 directed to the IP of the server on VMWare. I can reach the web site from inside the network, but I cannot reach the site from outside the network. I have other web sites that are working through the Firebox, and I am confident that it is configured correctly. I suspect that Windows 2008 server is blocking routed or public addresses, but I have shut down the firewall on the Server that is running on VMWare and the AVG Anti-virus to no avail. How can I make my site available publicly.

• Recover a deleted webpage

  Suppose, a blog or a nice article was hosted on a website and it got deleted or worse the website was brought down. How do you view that web page? I tried searching for the cached version in Google. But, looks like the content was deleted long ago and is not listed in the search results directly. There are annotations to the link from many other sites, but still the actual content is not fully available. Now, can anybody help me see this page... I am actually looking for http://effectize.com/become-coolest-programmer :) And, moreover, in addition to bookmarking a favorite link, is it possible to cache the content of the link as well for later reference in case it gets deleted? • Watch Flash video but block out part of it

  I'm learning a foreign language. There are several online sites that have Flash video in the language I'm learning (e.g., Hulu), which is great. Unfortunately, they have English subtitles, which is (depending on who you ask) somewhere between "annoying" and "actively harmful to my learning". When I'm watching them in a window, I can just move them near the bottom of the screen, or put another window over them. That's awkward, but it kind of works. But I'd like to watch them full-screen, on my TV set. Full-screen Flash doesn't let me put any window on top of it. Is there a way to watch an online Flash video but block out part of it? I'll probably be using my Mac for this, but maybe Linux -- solutions for either one welcome.

• Opening tabs in Google Chrome crashes my system

  When I open tabs to sites such as BBC iPlayer I have about a 4/5 chance that it will crash my entire system. The system can remain unresponsive for up to 30 mins or as little as 2. This has only happened recently and is becoming very annoying as the rest of my system can be running perfectly fine then I open a tab and it hangs. It isn't always flash media webpages so I have ruled that out and I have check my addons opened them in incognito mode, done all the usual error checking.

  Many desktop software (VLC, MPC) and have an option to 'zoom in' , 'crop black bars', or crop to a specific aspect ratio. How can we do this in Fullscreen on Youtube or other flash Video sites? I am the viewer, NOT the video's creator/publisher. iOS Can do this (double tap to zoom, which removes black bars, zoom depth not configurable). afaik, Desktop computers (and android devices), cannot do this on the fly. The only 'workaround' I've found is F11 and zooming of the entire web page - basically a fake full screen and zooming the web page beyond the screen size. Use Case: watching 4:3 flash videos from the web on a widescreen monitor. Looking for all creative solutions, including any software that accesses YouTube without using a web browser.

  In AWStats under: "Links from an external page (other web sites except search engines)" it has generated a list of pages that had linked to my page. I see pages like: Bing, YouTube, HotFrog, etc.. However, there are many internal links within the pages. If not, can anyone independent of OpenCandy and their affiliates verify that /NOCANDY works? Background: About to install WinSCP onto a fresh Windows installation, and found out that new versions have OpenCandy associated with their installer. For the sake of balance, here's a link to WinSCP's FAQ on OpenCandy. The claim about /NOCANDY working appears on WinSCP's web site, but the same boilerplate appears on other OpenCandy web sites.   I was looking around for a place to buy a refill kit for my laser printer. Of course, there are thousands of websites that are selling these kits. The problem is that I can't tell which one is a good one to buy from. How can I tell if the store has a good reputation. I don't want to pay, and then not receive the item. This has happened to me before (IvySkin). Or get conned some other way. One place I found is printerinkcartridge.us. But again, I can't find any independent information from people that they have successfully ordered products from there, and that they received what they expected.   I want to improve my personal password management. I usually use secure passwords, but overuse them for too many different places. My questions: What methods do you use to create passwords, e.g. for different online sites/logins? What methods do you use to remember those passwords? Memory? Pen&Paper? Software storage? Is there some good way to store my passwords somewhere, so I can always have access to them when I need them (e.g. a webbased solution on my own server) but at the same way keep them away from unwanted access? • How can I preview various Google services in Firefox?

  With iGoogle shut down I haven't been able to replicate my homepage through other services. I'm not asking for a generic replacement for iGoogle, but how to accomplish a specific use case whether through a third-party dashboard, browser extension, or some DIY solution. I need an interactive Gmail inbox, Gmail Tasks, and Google Calendar in the same Firefox tab. If hosted by a third party, they need to authenticate safely using the Google account that I am logged in with. Other widgets would be useful but I only require those Google services. I'm using Gmail itself for now but there is hardly room for the other widgets in the sidebar. Both Google Sites and igHome won't reliably load the services, especially Tasks. Netvibes requires raw login information for third-party services.

  Hi Gents, I'm looking to set up a wildcard cname on a FQDN but cant seem to get it to work. This is what i'm trying to achive: A Record : domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 A Record : en.domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 cname : www.*.en.domain.co.uk : --> uk.domain.co.uk I'm reasonably new to all this kind of thing, so it's pretty probably pretty straight forward. • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise or avast! Free?

  I currently have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise on my computer. This was preinstalled on my PC. (My university did a bulk laptop purchase so I got a sweet deal on my laptop. McAfee was one of the extras that were included.) Apparently, it's getting bad ratings from sites such as Virus Bulletin and AV-Test. Am I better off with avast's free antivirus? Is it worth considering avast! Internet Security? I currently have a three-year license for VirusScan Enterprise. I keep my software up to date using Secunia PSI and I don't click on any suspicious links.

• Apache mpm-itk Performance

  I manage a bunch of VPSs with memory ranging from 1GB to 8GB. Most of these websites are Joomla websites, and the servers must support multiple sites/users/S-FTP. I use mpm-itk almost exclusively (mostly due to it's convenience in these shared environments). However, I'm aware it isn't known for performance, so I need some advice on making it faster. Due to the lack of documentation when I first went the way of mpm-itk, I included only one setting in the config, and that was to limit each user to 50 clients (the rest I left up to defaults): <IfModule mpm_itk_module> MaxClientsVHost 50 </IfModule> Are there any better alternatives available? Are there any settings supported in mpm-prefork or mpm-worker that are also supported in mpm-itk? Thanks!

  Can someone please migrate this question to "meta" for me? I'm unable to post there while I wait for OpenID to fix my password problems. Thanks. I'm having problems with superuser.com's interface -- when I provide an answer to a question, sometimes the buttons get locked and then I find out that the question was migrated. Usually I can go back and copy-and-paste my answer at whatever site it goes to, but on occasion my answer is lost and I have to re-type it. This is very time-consuming, and makes it quite frustrating to use the system. In addition, I find that I'm wasting a lot of time dealing with having to re-register on the other sites. My suggestion is to not de-activate the "Submit answer" button but to just forward that along to the migrated site automatically, thus ensuring that answers that people put a lot of effort into don't get lost.
