• A better way to encourage contributions to OSS

  Currently in the .NET world, most OSS projects are available via a NuGet package. Users have a very easy path towards *using* the project right away. But let’s say they encounter some isssue (maybe a bug, maybe a potential improvement) with the library. At this point, going from user to contributor (of a fix, or a good bug repro or even a spike for a new feature) is a very steep and non trivial multi-step process of registering with some open source hosting site (codeplex, github, bitbucket, etc.), learning how to grab the latest sources, build the project, formulate a patch (or fork the code), learn the source control software they use (mercurial, git, svn, tfs), install whatever tools are needed for it, read about the contributors workflow for the project (do you fork &amp; send pull requests? do you just send a patch file? do you just send a snippet? a unit test? etc.), and on, and on, and on. Granted, you may be lucky and already know the source control system the project uses, but in really, I’d say the chances are pretty low. I believe most developers *using* OSS are far from familiar with them, much less with contributing back to various projects. We OSS devs like to be on the cutting edge all the time, ya’ know, always jumping on the new SCC system, the new hosting site, the new agile way of managing work items, bug tracking, code reviews, etc. etc. etc.. • snmpd agent sends duplicate traps

  I am on Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, and I cannot upgrade to a higher version. I have installed the snmpd agent (NET-SNMP version 5.4.2.1) with an apt-get install snmpd command. When an event occurs which sends a trap, two traps are sent for each such event instead of one. For example, when I shut down the agent with command /etc/init.d/snmpd stop, two shutdown traps are sent to the destination host. If I then start back up the agent with command /etc/init.d/snmpd start, then two cold start traps are sent to the destination host. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for this, or is there a configuration change that is needed to prevent the sending of the duplicate trap? • Can't complete dropbox installation from behind proxy

  Problem: My PC on campus sits behind a proxy (requiring authentication) and I can't setup Dropbox. I am convinced that this is a proxy issue as I can't setup Ubuntu one either (but I don't use Ubuntu One so that is not a problem). I have looked at the Ubuntu One fix but it seems to be to modify settings explicitly related to Ubuntu One. I can install the nautilus-dropbox package (compiled from source and from .deb package from website and from software centre) but once I click OK from the "Dropbox Installation" dialog box (prompting me to download the proprietary daemon) the installation just freezes with the OK button pressed. When I look at its process in System Monitor its waiting channel is inet_wait_for_connect. I have set the following proxy directives thus far: Added mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80 information to network proxy settings under network in settings. Added http_host and http_port variables under gconf-editor-system-proxy Added 'host', 'authentication_password' 'authentication_user' and ticked 'user authentication' and 'use_http_proxy' under gconf-editor-system-http_proxy Added export http_proxy="http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/" to /etc/bash.bashrc Added Acquire::http::proxy "http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf (which is what I imagine is letting Software Center retrieve packages). (where ** is my password) I have also added the equivalent ftp and https lines for the above entries. I get the internet fine and Software Centre can download packages but thats it. Related issues: The software centre can't fetch reviews (but can download packages). When trying to add an online account in Gnome 3 a dialog pop up appears with "Error getting a Request Token: Cannot connect to proxy (proxy.waikato.ac.nz)" Updates: After some time (10mins ish) Dropbox shows an error dialog box that reads: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set you http_proxy environment variable. Is there a way I can see what environment variables are currently set?

• What are the packages/libraries I should install before compiling Python from source?

  Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). This is the list I compiled with below help and by digging in setup.py. It is complete for Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 at least: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) libncursesw5-dev libssl-dev libgdbm-dev libsqlite3-dev libbz2-dev More optional: tk-dev libdb-dev Ubuntu has no packages for v1.8.5 of the Berkeley database, nor (for obvious reasons) the Sun audio hardware, so the bsddb185 and sunaudiodev modules will still not be built on Ubuntu, but all other modules are built with the above packages installed. Python 2.5 and Python 2.6 also needs to have LDFLAGS set on Ubuntu 11.04 and later, to handle the new multi-arch layout: export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib/$(dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)" For Python 2.6 and 2.7 you also need to explicitly enable SSL after running the ./configure script and before running make. In Modules/Setup there are lines like this: #SSL=/usr/local/ssl #_ssl _ssl.c \ # -DUSE_SSL -I$(SSL)/include -I$(SSL)/include/openssl \ # -L$(SSL)/lib -lssl -lcrypto Uncomment these lines and change the SSL variable to /usr: SSL=/usr _ssl _ssl.c \ -DUSE_SSL -I$(SSL)/include -I$(SSL)/include/openssl \ -L$(SSL)/lib -lssl -lcrypto Python 2.6 also needs Modules/_ssl.c modified to be used with OpenSSL 1.0, which is used in Ubuntu 11.10. • 2D non-tile based map editor

  I am currently developing a relatively simple 2D, topdown oriented adventure game for the iPhone and was wondering what would be the easiest way to create the maps for my game. I figured I would need some kind of visual editor that would give me immediate feedback and would allow me to place all objects in the world exactly where I want them. I could then load the saved representation of the world I create in the editor in my game. So, I am looking for a simple map editor that allows me to do this. All the objects in my game are simply textured rectangles build up from two triangles. All I need to be able to do is position different rectangles/objects in the map, and give them a texture. I am using texture atlases, so it would be useful to be able to assign portions of textures to the objects. I then need to be able to extract all the objects from the saved representation of my maps, together with the name/identifier of the texture(atlas) they use, and the area of the texture atlas. I have looked at some tile-based map editors like Tiled and Ogmo, but they don't seem to be able to do what I want. Any suggestions? EDIT: a more concrete example: something like the GameMaker level editor, but then with added export functionality in a handy format.

  We have a PHP 5 web application and we're currently evaluating PHP CodeSniffer in order to decide whether forcing code standards improves code quality without causing too much of a headache. If it seems good we will add a SVN pre-commit hook to ensure all new files committed on the dev branch are free from coding standard smells. Is there a way to configure PHP codeSniffer to ignore a particular type of error? or get it to treat a certain error as a warning instead? • How can I fix the "TERM environment variable not set" warning in eclipse

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04 LTS and working with eclipse (juno) on a c++ project. I keep getting "TERM environment variable not set" in the console while trying to run the program. I realize this means the variable needs to get set. My question is what should it be set to and how do I set it? I've read that it should be 'xterm' in a few places. So I added export TERM=xterm in my .profile and while eclipse stopped giving me the warning, instead it would output unreadable garbage everynow and then (not a side effect of the program). It did display the program output but intermixed were weird characters. This leads me to believe it's not 'xterm' I should be setting TERM to. Or I'm setting it in an incorrect way. Any help is appreciated. Sample output: **TERM environment variable not set.** Please make a selection ----------------------- 1. Create a budget 2. Edit a budget 3. Display a budget 4. Save a budget 5. Load a budget 6. • C IDE for Mac needed

  I'm looking for heavy-duty C/C++ IDE for Mac that would satisfy the following criteria: Work with big projects (~5000 files, some of them 100K big) efficiently. Have good navigation both file-based and symbol-based - i.e. "go to file", "go to function" etc. with autocompletion support. Support for "go to declaration/definition" for symbols - functions, structures, etc. Auto-adding new files in folders already in the project. Support for code completion for values, function names, etc. At least rudimentary CPP macro understanding - i.e. #define foo bar then foo() should take me either to #define or to actual bar. I understand full CPP parsing may be hard, but I hope for at least the obvious cases. Support for displaying parameter names/types by function name, preferably - integrated with the previous item, for functions defined in the project. Support for libc would be nice too :) (optional) Cross-project search support (I can manage with grep -r if everything else works) (optional) SVN support, at least to some extent (update, commit, mark updated) Is there such editor around? Free would be nice, but I'm ready to part with some money if it's good enough. I'm using TextMate now but I'm not satisfied with it. Tried Xcode but it seems to not be able to handle a large project - it just crashed...

• Defaults for Exporting Data in Oracle SQL Developer

  I was testing a reported bug in SQL Developer today – so the bug I was looking for wasn’t there (YES!) but I found a different one (NO!) – and I was getting frustrated by having to check the same boxes over and over again. What I wanted was INSERT STATEMENTS to the CLIPBOARD. Not what I want! I’m always doing the same thing, over and over again. And I never go to FILE – that’s too permanent for my type of work. I either want stuff to the clipboard or to the worksheet. Surely there’s a way to tell SQL Developer how to behave? Oh yeah, check the preferences So you can set the defaults for this dialog. Go to: Tools – Preferences – Database – Utilities – Export Now I will always start with ‘INSERT’ and ‘Clipboard’ – woohoo! Now, I can also go INTO the preferences for each of the different formats to save me a few more clicks. I prefer pointy hats (^) for my delimiters, don’t you? So, spend a few minutes and set each of these to what you’re normally doing and save yourself a bunch of time going forward.

• Clusterware 11gR2 &ndash; Setting up an Active/Passive failover configuration

  Oracle provides many interesting ways to ensure High Availability. Dataguard configurations, RAC configurations or even both (as recommended for a Maximum Available Architecture - MAA) are the most frequently found. But when it comes to protecting a system with an Active/Passive architecture with failover capabilities, one often thinks to expensive third party cluster systems. Oracle Clusterware technology, which comes free with Oracle Database, is – in the knowing of most people - often linked to Oracle RAC and therefore, is rarely used to implement failover solutions. 11gR2 Clusterware – which is part of Oracle Grid Infrastructure - provides a comprehensive framework to setup automatic failover configurations. It is actually possible to make “failover-able'” and, therefore to protect, almost every kind of application (from xclock to the more complex Application Server) In the next couple of lines, I will try to present the different steps to achieve this goal : Have a fully operational 11gR2 database protected by automatic failover capabilities. I assume you are fluent in installing Oracle Database 11gR2, Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11gR2 on a Linux system and that ASM is not a problem for you (as I am using it as a shared storage). If not, please have a look at Oracle Documentation. As often, I made my tests using an Oracle VirtualBox environment. The scripts are tested and functional. Unfortunately, there can always be a typo or a mistake. This blog entry is not a course around the Clusterware Framework. I just hope it will let you see how powerful it is and that it will give you the whilst to go further with it…   Prerequisite 2 Linux boxes (OELCluster01 and OELCluster02) at the same OS level. I used OEL 5 Update 5 with Enterprise Kernel. Shared Storage (SAN). On my VirtualBox system, I used Openfiler to simulate the SAN Oracle 11gR2 Database (11.2.0.1) Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1)   Step 1 – Install the software Using asmlib, create 3 ASM disks (ASM_CRS, ASM_DTA and ASM_FRA) Install Grid Infrastructure for a cluster (OELCluster01 and OELCluster02 are the 2 nodes of the cluster) Use ASM_CRS to store Voting Disk and OCR. Use SCAN. Install Oracle Database Standalone binaries on both nodes. Use asmca to check/mount the disk groups on 2 nodes Use dbca to create and configure a database on the primary node Let’s name it DB11G. Copy the pfile, password file to the second node. Create adump directoty on the second node.   Step 2 - Setup the resource to be protected After its creation with dbca, the database is automatically protected by the Oracle Restart technology available with Grid Infrastructure. Consequently, it restarts automatically (if possible) after a crash (ex: kill –9 smon). A database resource has been created for that in the Cluster Registry. We can observe this with the command : crsctl status resource that shows and ora.dba11g.db entry. Let’s save the definition of this resource, for future use : mkdir –p /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts chown oracle:oinstall /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts crsctl status resource ora.db11g.db -p > /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/myResource.txt Although very interesting, Oracle Restart is not cluster aware and cannot restart the database on any other node of the cluster. So, let’s remove it from the OCR definitions, we don’t need it ! srvctl stop database -d DB11G srvctl remove database -d DB11G Instead of it, we need to create a new resource of a more general type : cluster_resource. It is self-explaining and contains nothing special. Just be aware that it is run as Oracle user (because of the ACL property – see later) and needs to know about the environment. Name it myNewResource.txt. myResource.txt  is shown below. As we can see, it defines an ora.database.type resource, named ora.db11g.db. A lot of properties are related to this type of resource and do not need to be used for a cluster_resource. Step 4 - Test this We will test the setup using 2 methods. crsctl relocate resource DB11G.db This command calls the ACTION_SCRIPT  (on the two nodes)  to stop the database on the active node and start it on the other node. Once done, we can revert back to the original node, but, this time we can use a more “MS$ like” method :Turn off the server on which the database is running. After short delay, you should observe that the database is relocated on node 1. Conclusion Once the software installed and the standalone database created (which is a rather common and usual task), the steps to reach the objective are quite easy : Create an executable action script on every node of the cluster. Create a resource file. Create/Register the resource with OCR using the resource file. Start the resource. • 2D non-tile based map editor

  I am currently developing a relatively simple 2D, topdown oriented adventure game for the iPhone and was wondering what would be the easiest way to create the maps for my game. I figured I would need some kind of visual editor that would give me immediate feedback and would allow me to place all objects in the world exactly where I want them. I could then load the saved representation of the world I create in the editor in my game. So, I am looking for a simple map editor that allows me to do this. All the objects in my game are simply textured rectangles build up from two triangles. All I need to be able to do is position different rectangles/objects in the map, and give them a texture. I am using texture atlases, so it would be useful to be able to assign portions of textures to the objects. I then need to be able to extract all the objects from the saved representation of my maps, together with the name/identifier of the texture(atlas) they use, and the area of the texture atlas. I have looked at some tile-based map editors like Tiled and Ogmo, but they don't seem to be able to do what I want. Any suggestions? EDIT: a more concrete example: something like the GameMaker level editor, but then with added export functionality in a handy format.

• File format for animated scene

  I've got a custom OpenGL based rendering engine and I'd like to add support for cinema-type scene animation. The artist that is helping me uses primarily 3DSMax. I'd like a file format for exporting and importing this data. I'm also in need of a file format for skeletal animation data, which may have an impact here. I've been looking at MAXScript to manually export this stuff, which would buy me the most flexibility, but I have virtually no experience with 3DSMax itself, so I get a little lost when it comes to terminology. So I'd like to know what file formats exist for animated scene data, and whether they are appropriate for my use (my fear is that they will be way too broad for my fairly simple needs.) The way I view animated scene data is basically a bunch of references to [animated] models with keyframe-based matrices describing their orientation over time. And probably some special camera stuff to handle perspective. I might also want some event type stuff for adding/removing objects. Is this a sane concept?

  Have you ever wanted to fill an entire row or column with a series of values? If you’re an Excel user, you can do the same thing in Google Docs. If you haven’t used either, here’s the quick way to do it. Just type in a couple of numbers in sequence… 1 2 3 works pretty well. You could also put them across a row instead of down a column. Then move your mouse over the dot in the corner until the pointer changes, then just drag it downward (or if you are filling a row instead, you can drag it to the right). Let go of the mouse, and your data will be automatically filled in. You could also make it skip by 1 instead, like 2 4 6 8, etc… It all works the same way. Sadly there’s no really advanced options like Excel has, but for most uses, this is good enough. Also, we’re aware this is a very simple tip for most of you, but we’re trying to help the beginners out as well! • updatedb & locate command problem - Files from external hard drive are no longer indexed after rebooting

  Files from my external hard drive are no longer indexed after rebooting. I have to remount and then run # updatedb after each reboot. The problem is updatedb takes a few minutes for my external hard drives. Is there any way I can retain indexing for my externals after I reboot so that the locate command can search through my externals?
