• Creating a dynamic (video) Overlay on Google Maps on Android 2.1

  I'm trying to create a map overlay for displaying a video stream (MJPEG) on top of a Mapview. Currently I've a standalone activity that creates a data thread for fetching MJPEG video frames. I'm using a handler to send a frame (as a Bitmap) from the data thread to the main activity which then updates the UI. I'm not sure how I can implement "refresh" for updating my "overlayed" video stream. EDIT: What I mean by "refresh" is - how can I update the video portion (not the mapview) of my UI whenever I get a new video frame. I plan to paint the video frame (bitmap) in the "draw method" of my implementation of the Overlay subclass. But the "draw" method is not invoked by me directly. Thanks.

• Java Inter Application Form Communication Observer Pattern

  Observer pattern? Where do i get examples of this in Java (i know google but was hoping for some personal insight also.) On to a proper explanation of my issue: i have 3 forms/windows. "board" is the main form that loads as the application. "chat" is where the text chat takes place. "network" is where network connection is established. i have the game (connect4) working locally and i would like to implement a networked version of it also. my idea is maybe it is related to Observer pattern to have a thread (or something) monitoring network state during runtime and update the chat and board forms of the current network status as well as delivering received data from the network. are my ideas valid? or how should i go about establishing network and network status updates throughout the application? thank you for your input.

• Enforce single installation with Innosetup?

  We have an application which we licence to separate companies. The app is customised to fit their brand; basically it is the same app but with a different theme file. We generate separate installers for each vendor as each app requires different configurations (servers to connect to, updates etc). So each installer contains the same compiled application but with different configurations. All of this is managed by our build system so adding a new vendor is just a matter of creating a new theme and a simple include script for Inno Setup. Our problem is that we want to ensure that when a user installs the app from vendor A they will not be able to install it from vendor B unless they explicitly uninstall the existing app. Is there some setting in Inno Setup which will check if there is an existing installation (either from the same vendor or a different one) and tell the user they have to remove the existing installation?

• Debug PyDev+Eclipse - Code not reloads after code change in breakpoint/suspend mode

  I often doing such steps and want to optimize debug speed: I am setting some breakpoints. I am running Google Appengine Application (Python 2.5.2+). When breakpoint occur I often change code to fix bugs. After code change want to test again but there is problem if I changed code in breakpoint/suspend mode the application does not updates with my code changes - thus requiring a slow reloading. Does anybody have an idea of what is root cause of forcing reloading after suspend or it is PyDev Bug/Limitation?

• Box2d Documentation - Outdated, any better api refs?

  Hi guys, I am working with cocos2d + box2d and as I look through the 'Hello World' tutorial and attempt others I am finding many constructs which do not seem to be documented in the latest api ref. Would anybody be able to shed some light on what's going on? or point me in the right direction to someone who has covered the new constructs such as b2PolygonDef changing to b2PolygonShape and likewise for circle + who knows what else, seems there has not been any doc updates since August '09.   This tutorial on mobileorchard.com uses 2 classes (or 2 sets of .h and .m) to implement core location. Can I just use everything there in my existing class? How would I do that? Also, is the - (id) init { self = [super init]; if (self != nil) { self.locationManager = [[[CLLocationManager alloc] init] autorelease]; self.locationManager.delegate = self; // send loc updates to myself } return self; } method the same as the usual initWithNib? • How do I load the Oracle schema into memory instead of the hard drive?

  I have a certain web application that makes upwards of ~100 updates to an Oracle database in succession. This can take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, which sometimes causes the webpage to time out. A re-design of the application is scheduled soon but someone told me that there is a way to configure a "loader file" which loads the schema into memory and runs the transactions there instead of on the hard drive, supposedly improving speed by several orders of magnitude. I have tried to research this "loader file" but all I can find is information about the SQL* bulk data loader. Does anyone know what he's talking about? Is this really possible and is it a feasible quick fix or should I just wait until the application is re-designed?

  Hello, i have the following mysql table: myTable: id int auto_increment voucher int not null id_user int null I've populated voucher field with values from 1 to 100000 so i've got 100000 records; when a user clicks a button in a PHP page, i need to allocate a record for the user so i make something similar like: update myTable set id_user=XXX where voucher=(SELECT * FROM (SELECT MIN(voucher) FROM myTable WHERE id_user is null) v); The problem is that I don't use locks and i should use them because if two users click in the same moment i risk to assign the same voucher to different persons (2 updates in the same record so i lose 1 user) ... • Deadlock error in INSERT statement

  We've got a web-based application. There is a time-bound database operation (INSERTs and UPDATEs) in the application which takes more time to complete, hence this particular flow has been changed into Java Thread so it will not wait (block) for the complete database operation to be completed. My problem is, if more than 1 user come across this particular flow, I'm facing the following error thrown by PostgreSQL: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: ERROR: deadlock detected Detail: Process 13560 waits for ShareLock on transaction 3147316424; blocked by process 13566. Process 13566 waits for ShareLock on transaction 3147316408; blocked by process 13560. Above error is consistently thrown in INSERT statements. Additional Information: 1) I have PRIMARY KEY defined in this table. 2) There are FOREIGN KEY references in this table. 3) Separate database connection is passed to each Java Thread. • Updating GUI axes in MATLAB

  HI, I am making a GUI for a program I have created, where I need to be able to change the position of a load along a beam. I have set up the axes and the slider properly, but I am unsure how to get the axes to update, as I can't find any examples that show how to do this on the internet. At present, as I move the load, the position updates properly, but the old position stays on screen as well, which is quite annoying. Can anyone recommend any good examples that show how to do this, or does anyone have a suggestion of how to go about refreshing the axes? Regards, James

• Where has my parallel port gone? ioperm(888,1,1) returns -1.

  I have an old Dell Dimension 8200 running Gentoo which I use solely to control various things using the parallel port. After shutting it down a few weeks ago, I started it up again today and tried to access the parallel port like I usually do. Unfortunately, my code bombed out when it tried to call ioperm(888,1,1) to grab the parallel port which returned an error code of -1. There have been no changes to the system be it hardware or software, no updates, no tweaking, no dropping the case, no over-amping the data pins, nothing. The port and the software have been working fine for months with no changes, and were working fine when I shut it down last. Running my code with root privileges changes nothing. What is breaking this and how can I fix it?

  Having a look around at WebsiteSpark from Microsoft - the deal is good (especially if you were looking to go down this path already). But I'm one of those people that likes to 'wait for the next version' if I'm in no rush to sign up. One question that's been bugging me is whether or not the program includes upgrades to Visual Studio and/or they will change the starting pack at some point? Currently, If you sign up now, you get 3 copies of Visual Studio 2008. If you're umming and ahhing about the scheme, is it worth waiting and hoping that they adapt their program so that it comes with VS2010? Or maybe that they'll offer free updates to those already in the scheme? (This question may be a little subjective I guess and it probably applies to the BizSpark side of things as well. Have there been any hints set in other Microsoft programs that might indicate the outcome? ).

  I have a post-update hook on my server, such that when I git push it does a pull on the live web directory. However, while the push always succeeds, the post-update hook sometimes fails. The hook is pretty simple: #!/bin/sh # # An example hook script to prepare a packed repository for use over # dumb transports. # # To enable this hook, rename this file to "post-update". cd /var/www env -i git pull I'm pushing updates from a variety of places, but sometimes I have to login as root on the server and manuall do a env -i git pull I only have to do it 20% of the time though. • Displaying console output?

  I am currently creating a customer application for a local company. I have a datagridview linked to the customers table, and I am trying to link it up so that updates, inserts and deletions are handled correctly. I am very new to c# so I am starting with the basics (like about 2 days ago I knew nothing - I know vb.net, Java and several other languages though..). Anywho from what I understand anything output through Debug.WriteLine should only appear when in debug mode (common sense really) but anything output through Concole.WriteLine should appear whether or not in debug mode. However I have checked the immediate and output windows and nothing is being output when in normal mode. Does anyone have any idea why this is?? Edit: I have event handlers for clicking a cell - it should output CellClicked and set the gridview to invisible when a cell is clicked. The latter works whichever mode I am in, but CellClicked is only output in debug mode. I am using Console.WriteLine("CellClicked").

• How can I best geocode a table of addresses in SQL Server?

  I've got a SQL Server 2008 table with addresses. I've got some C# code that can individually geocode the addresses. I've got a Google Maps API for geocoding. Now I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to use these resources. I could write a console app that manually updates the tables using my C# library, but the data I have is updated periodically. I will be performing an import routine of some sort and I'm thinking it would be 'simplest' to perform the geocoding as the import occurs. I'm not so strong on SQL Server capabilities, so I'm looking for advice. I've considered letting the import call an assembly I create that would be referenced in SQL Server, but read that Sql Server 2008 has made it virtually impossible to reference your own DLL. So my next guess is having the import call a web service to pass in the address and update the table with the results, but I've not had much luck in finding info on this method. Any advice?

  I think that the zipper is a beautiful idea; it elegantly provides a way to walk a list or tree and make what appear to be local updates in a functional way. Asymptotically, the costs appear to be reasonable. But traversing the data structure requires memory allocation at each iteration, where a normal list or tree traversal is just pointer chasing. This seems expensive (please correct me if I am wrong). Are the costs prohibitive? And what under what circumstances would it be reasonable to use a zipper?

• .NET Form_load priority

  So, the problem is such as this: I have a method that does stuff and updates a progress bar. If I call the method after the form is fully loaded (i.e.: by assigning it to a button on the form) everything works fine. The problem is that I need the method to start working as soon as the form loads, by itself, so I would place it in the Form_Load method. The problem is that even though I call Application.DoEvents() right before calling that method from within Form_Load, the form doesn't show up until the method has completed everything. As I said, if I let the form load first and call the method from another UI element for instance, everything works fine. Thanks in advance.

• How much of Grails GORM to test?

  Is there a "best practice" or defacto standard with how much of the GORM functionality one should test in the unit/functional tests? My take is that one should probably do most of the domain testing as functional tests so that you get the full grails environment. But what do you test? Inserts, updates, deletes? Do you test constraints even though they were probably more thoroughly tested by the grails release? Or do you just assume that GORM does what it is supposed to do and move to other parts of the application?

  The command line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in bash will ring the bell. With the line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in my crontab I expected the bell to ring every minute, but it's silent. I know crontab is working because the line: /bin/touch $HOME/jkjkjk updates the file jkjkjk every minute as it should. I found a posting some years ago suggesting that standard output should be directed to /dev/tty1 in crontab. But the line: /bin/echo "\007" /dev/tty1 Still fails. What to try next?

  Hi, I'm not sure how to do this... I have a database which contains a messages and categories tables. The categories table has a field which has a count of the number of messages related to it. Sometimes however I need to deactivate (active = 0) a message, at the moment this doesn't then update the category table... I will implement this is in the end but for the time I would just like to run a script perhaps daily that goes through all the categories, counts up the messages and updates the field.   Hi my program launches a 3rd party program with a few switches to update itself. Once these updates are complete I need to manually click save from the applications menu. This can be done via the keyboard (Alt Gr + M then Alt Gr + S) The application will take several seconds to load at which point the application will open maximised and the save option will be enabled.   I'm using a list box where there are on average about 500 thumbnails (items) that can be sorted and searched. Since I'm using default databinding and search descriptors (which I've heard are slow due to reflection) the list takes a noticeable pause of a few seconds loading, sorting, and searching (the list dynamically updates based on the contents of the search box so the first one or two letters typed are really slow). I don't think I can fully do away with reflection give the timeframe for the project, and speed isn't super essential, but I'd like some kind of graphical indication of the delay so it doesn't confuse the user. How could I do something like a website video loading screen where the listbox grays out and some kind of loading circle indicates it's processing until the list is ready? Or even just grayed out with the words "Loading..." for a few seconds could work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!!!

The problem is that WPF ignores the property changed event that is raised by it's own update. This results in the user not seeing the text they typed converted to lowercase. How can I change this behaviour so that the TextBox updates with lowercase text? Note: this is just an example I have used to illustrate the problem of WPF ignoring events. I'm not really interested in converting strings to lowercase or any issues with String.Equals(string, string).

• iPhone: Core Data: Updating a pre-filled database in future app versions.

  I am creating an app with a database of information that needs to be pre-filled. This data will change in future versions. In the same database, I also need to store user editable information since that user edited data directly relates to the pre-filled data. My question is, if I'm pre-filling the database by creating a duplicate data model in a second app and copying over the core data file before release, how would I handle updates to that data in future versions of the app without destroying the user's existing data? Do the core data migration methods handle this, or must I write custom methods to programatically handle the merge at first app launch?
