• Creating Python C module from Fortran sources on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

  In a project I work on we use a Python C module compiled from Fortran with f2py. I've had no issues building it on Windows 7 32bit (using mingw32) and on the servers it's built on 32bit Linux. But I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit on my laptop that I use for development, and when I build it I get a lot of warnings (even though I've apparently installed all gcc/fortran libraries/compilers), but it does finish the build.   Most of you would probably just call me a kid (I'm 15). I'm doing hobby programming (I started fiddling around with ActionScript 2.0 in Flash 8 when I was 11, now I do mostly C, Python and Java). As I'm 15, I won't get a job for a long period of time (I'm going to spend years in academia before that) and thus this question is not about which programming methodologies you recommend me to read up on for a software engineering job, but instead which methodologies should a hobby programmer read about? This month’s feature is a follow-up from last month’s Global Perspective note from a well known ACE Director based in EMEA. My first contribution to this blog was before Oracle Open World and I was quite excited about where this initiative would take me in my understanding of the value of Oracle Fusion Middleware. Rimi Bewtra from the Oracle AppAdvantage team came as promised to the Oracle ACE Director briefings and explained what this initiative was all about and I then asked the directors to take part in the new survey. The story was really well received and then at the SOA advisory board that many of these ACE Directors already take part in there was a further discussion on how this initiative will help customers understand the benefits of adoption. A few days later Rick Beers launched the program at a lunch of invited customer executives which included one from Pella who talked about their projects (a quick recap on that here). I wasn’t able to stay for the whole event but what really interested me was that these executives who understood the technology but where looking for how they could use them to drive their businesses. Lots of ideas were bubbling up in my head about how we can use this in user groups to help our members, and the timing was fantastic as just three weeks later we had UKOUG_Apps13, our flagship Applications conference in the UK. We had independently working with Oracle marketing in the UK on an initiative called Apps Transformation to help our members look beyond just the application they use today. We have had a Fusion community page but felt the options open are now much wider than Fusion Applications, there are acquired applications, social, mobility and of course the underlying technology, Oracle Fusion Middleware. I was really pleased to be allowed to give the Oracle AppAdvantage story as a session in our conference and we are planning a special Apps Transformation event in March where I hope the Oracle AppAdvantage team will take part and we will have the results of the survey to discuss. But, life also came full circle for me. In my first post, I talked about Andrew Sutherland and his original theory that Oracle Fusion Middleware adoption had technical drivers. Well, Andrew was a speaker at our event and he gave a potted, tech-talk free update on Oracle Open World. Andrew talked about the Prevailing Technology Winds, and what is driving this today and he talked about that in the past it was the move from simply automating processes (ERP etc), through the altering of those processes (SOA) and onto consolidation. The next drivers are around the need to predict, both faster and more accurately; how to better exploit the information that we have available. He went on to talk about The Nexus of Forces: Social, Mobile, Cloud and Information – harnessing these forces of change with Oracle technology. Gartner really likes this concept and if you want to know more you can get their paper here. All this has made me think, and I hope it will make you too. • How to use tscon on Windows7?

  I need to run overnight automation testing using RFT and IE on Windows7 virtual machine. I found that restarting the Windows box before the testing starts helps. I am moving the production environment from Windows XP to Windows 7. RFT used to complain when running RFT scripts that CRFCN0557E: Activation failed when running under a Terminal Services environment. This may be caused by using a minimized terminal window - try playing back without minimizing the terminal window (it does not need to be full-screen). Running tscon.exe 0 /dest:console prior starting any RFT script fix the error on Windows XP. But not on Windows7. I did some research and was trying for hours to fix that but nothing helped. There is no screen saver turned on on Windows7. I tried to run both but nothing helped. tscon.exe 0 /dest:console tscon.exe 1 /dest:console On Windows7 tscon returns {ErrorPrintf(): LoadString failed, Error 15105, (0x00003B01)} Error [15105]:The resource loader cache doesn't have loaded MUI entry. Error [0]:The operation completed successfully. On Windows XP tscon returns Could not connect sessionID 0 to sessionname console, Error code 7045 Error [7045]:The requested session access is denied. I just double checked that running tscon.exe 0 /dest:console on Windows XP solves the issue. Cannot understand the output of the tscon command then. Any idea how I can run RFT scripts after I restart the Windows box automatically? Preferably without involving any other computer. I was even thinking to use the old Windows XP to make remote desktop session to make RFT happy. I hope there is other better solution to that.

I have tried doingit on a second XP machine and the VPC boots properly using that VHD but under Win7 I can't get it to act as the boot disk for the VPC. Any ideas? TIA J

• How should i setup my PC partition?

  I want to clear out my PC and setup the partitions. Right now i have it as XP, Win-7, Vista, XP/Test/Spare I notice my PC is pretty good at virtualization, at least virtualizing linux. I also rarely boot out of my primary XP although i do find myself deving on windows 7 once in a while. So i figure i can have it as XP, Windows 7, data partition then... what? i still have one more slot. There may be a more useful way to do this so what do you guys think? My bro has 2gb partition that is used to restore the OS which can be ran during the bootup process. However i dont think i can do that with mine. So, what are you thoughts?

• Drupal + Zen - not proper layout/no graphics

  Hello, I installed Drupal (both using Fantastico, then started over from scratch) and Drupal works great except when I setup the Zen theme (following the instructions on the website and in the readme-first.txt) the theme does not show up properly. it has no graphics except for the tiny drupal logo way at the bottom. the rest is text. I have uploaded the theme to the /public_html/sites/all/themes folder and it does show up in themes in the administer section so I select enable and default. permissions on this folder are 755. any ideas? I checked the Drupal forums and someone is having the same problem but no one replied (this was in April) so I figured I would have a better shot on this awesome website. thanks. Luma

• VirtualBox: Host OS processor is spiked while guest OS virtual processor is idle?

  I'm running Windows XP 32-bit on Windows Vista 64-bit with VirtualBox 3.0.6. Whenever I run the XP VM, Vista (host) reports 100% cpu utilization even though XP (guest) reports between 1-5% cpu utilization. The host box has 2 GB of physical RAM. The guest/vm is configured with 512 MB. The host box has a 64-bit AMD processor. No apps (other than VirtualBox) are running on either host, they're just idling. Any guesses as to why the host processor is spiked? I've enabled various advanced features for the XP guest in the hopes of having better performance: Settings → System → Motherboard: Enable IO APIC Settings → System → Processor: Enable PAE/NX Settings → System → Acceleration: Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nesting Paging

• Connect to virtual host computer from within virtualbox

  I'm currently developing on an ubuntu karmic. For this I've installed lampp with a virtual host on apache so http://myproject/ is mapped to my project's root directory. Now to test the website in IE I've installed an XP machine on a virtualBox OSE. Ive managed to get the virtual host working on the XP by adding its to the hostfile, like this: 255.255.255.255 myproject where 255.255.255.255 is the ip adress of the host computer (my ubuntu). Now every day when I come to work and plug in my computer to the network, my IP has changed. so When i boot the XP I have to change the IP in the hostfile to my new IP. Is there any way where I can set the ip to somthing the XP will recognise as the host machine? I've tried replacing the IP in the hostfile by the host computer name, but that does not seem to work... This would make my like a bit easier :)

• How can I make all GTK+ apps on Windows pick up themes from the same folder?

  I have several GTK+ apps installed (pidgin, GIMP, KeepNote et al) and I also have GTK2 themes installed separately in one location. However, picking/selecting a theme from the GTK+ theme selector does not make all the apps use that theme unless I copy and paste all the themes (or at least the one I selected) manually to the "themes" folder for each app (even that doesn't work at times - for KeepNote, for instance). This gets rather tedious and is also a waste of space. Isn't there a way to make all GTK+ apps use the same folder for themes? If yes, how?

• Windows 7 VPN Error 619

  So I am running Windows 7 Enterprise. This morning I was able to VPN using the built in VPN (Connect to Work Network etc). I had to change my network's IP address range and now the VPN will not work. It just stalls on the Verifying user name and password... message. But then it returns the 619 error. Anybody know why changing my machine's IP address would cause this problem? Where should I be looking to try and fix this issue? I have tried this on a Windows XP machine that also had the IP address range change and this still connects fine using exactly the same connection details. EDIT The internal network range changed from 192.x.x.x to 10.x.x.x. This was done on the entire Active Directory. All machines are running fine and the Windows XP machine, that works going to the same client VPN mentioned above is on the same network. Both the XP and the Win 7 machines are using DHCP served by the Domain Controller. The client domain is not performing any IP range checks/restrictions. The VPN is outside the internal network, connection is being made via the Internet and not passing through any other machine, other than the normal domain machines, ie DNS etc. This is passing through a router and the router has the relevant VPN passthrough options configured. All internal machines are working correctly with other forms of VPN, ie Cisco, Sonic etc (these were tested on other machines, they are not installed on the Vista or Win7 machines). After further testing, this is occurring on all Win7 and Vista machines where they can no longer connect to the client VPN, however all XP machines can still connect fine. This has been tested on three Vista, two Win7 and five XP machines. All machines are on DHCP and tests have been done with both the firewalls turned on and off, as well as with fixed IPs being used. No problem – just need themes, right? I found a theme I liked, downloaded and installed. Everything seemed to go fine. However, quitting and restarting TextMate 2 doesn't give me my theme in the menu I see. View Theme No Themes Loaded What?
