  • Macbook Air freezes while running Ubuntu 13.10

    - by jjesse
Ok folks I'm trying to setup my Macbook Air to run Ubuntu 13.10 (note: I normally using Kubuntu but currently running Ubuntu). I have run all of the updates for the system as of this posting. This happens regardless of the application I have open (Firefox, Terminal, Software Updater). The system will freeze, become unresponsive and then kick me back to the login screen. I don't see a crash notification or anything to send as troubleshooting so I don't know where to start

Learning Outcomes Explain the characteristics of memory systems Describe the memory hierarchy Discuss cache memory principles Discuss issues relevant to cache design Describe the cache organization of the Pentium Computer Memory Systems There are key characteristics of memory… Location – internal or external Capacity – expressed in terms of bytes Unit of Transfer – the number of bits read out of or written into memory at a time Access Method – sequential, direct, random or associative From a users perspective the two most important characteristics of memory are… Capacity Performance – access time, memory cycle time, transfer rate The trade off for memory happens along three axis… Faster access time, greater cost per bit Greater capacity, smaller cost per bit Greater capacity, slower access time This leads to people using a tiered approach in their use of memory   As one goes down the hierarchy, the following occurs… Decreasing cost per bit Increasing capacity Increasing access time Decreasing frequency of access of the memory by the processor The use of two levels of memory to reduce average access time works in principle, but only if conditions 1 to 4 apply. A variety of technologies exist that allow us to accomplish this. Thus it is possible to organize data across the hierarchy such that the percentage of accesses to each successively lower level is substantially less than that of the level above. A portion of main memory can be used as a buffer to hold data temporarily that is to be read out to disk. This is sometimes referred to as a disk cache and improves performance in two ways… Disk writes are clustered. Instead of many small transfers of data, we have a few large transfers of data. This improves disk performance and minimizes processor involvement. Some data designed for write-out may be referenced by a program before the next dump to disk. In that case the data is retrieved rapidly from the software cache rather than slowly from disk. Cache Memory Principles Cache memory is substantially faster than main memory. A caching system works as follows.. When a processor attempts to read a word of memory, a check is made to see if this in in cache memory… If it is, the data is supplied, If it is not in the cache, a block of main memory, consisting of a fixed number of words is loaded to the cache. Because of the phenomenon of locality of references, when a block of data is fetched into the cache, it is likely that there will be future references to that same memory location or to other words in the block. Elements of Cache Design While there are a large number of cache implementations, there are a few basic design elements that serve to classify and differentiate cache architectures… Cache Addresses Cache Size Mapping Function Replacement Algorithm Write Policy Line Size Number of Caches Cache Addresses Almost all non-embedded processors support virtual memory. Virtual memory in essence allows a program to address memory from a logical point of view without needing to worry about the amount of physical memory available. When virtual addresses are used the designer may choose to place the cache between the MMU (memory management unit) and the processor or between the MMU and main memory. The disadvantage of virtual memory is that most virtual memory systems supply each application with the same virtual memory address space (each application sees virtual memory starting at memory address 0), which means the cache memory must be completely flushed with each application context switch or extra bits must be added to each line of the cache to identify which virtual address space the address refers to. Cache Size We would like the size of the cache to be small enough so that the overall average cost per bit is close to that of main memory alone and large enough so that the overall average access time is close to that of the cache alone. Also, larger caches are slightly slower than smaller ones. Mapping Function Because there are fewer cache lines than main memory blocks, an algorithm is needed for mapping main memory blocks into cache lines. The choice of mapping function dictates how the cache is organized. Three techniques can be used… Direct – simplest technique, maps each block of main memory into only one possible cache line Associative – Each main memory block to be loaded into any line of the cache Set Associative – exhibits the strengths of both the direct and associative approaches while reducing their disadvantages For detailed explanations of each approach – read the text book (page 148 – 154) Replacement Algorithm For associative and set associating mapping a replacement algorithm is needed to determine which of the existing blocks in the cache must be replaced by a new block. There are four common approaches… LRU (Least recently used) FIFO (First in first out) LFU (Least frequently used) Random selection Write Policy When a block resident in the cache is to be replaced, there are two cases to consider If no writes to that block have happened in the cache – discard it If a write has occurred, a process needs to be initiated where the changes in the cache are propagated back to the main memory. There are several approaches to achieve this including… Write Through – all writes to the cache are done to the main memory as well at the point of the change Write Back – when a block is replaced, all dirty bits are written back to main memory The problem is complicated when we have multiple caches, there are techniques to accommodate for this but I have not summarized them. Line Size When a block of data is retrieved and placed in the cache, not only the desired word but also some number of adjacent words are retrieved. As the block size increases from very small to larger sizes, the hit ratio will at first increase because of the principle of locality, which states that the data in the vicinity of a referenced word are likely to be referenced in the near future. As the block size increases, more useful data are brought into cache. The hit ratio will begin to decrease as the block becomes even bigger and the probability of using the newly fetched information becomes less than the probability of using the newly fetched information that has to be replaced. Two specific effects come into play… Larger blocks reduce the number of blocks that fit into a cache. Because each block fetch overwrites older cache contents, a small number of blocks results in data being overwritten shortly after they are fetched. As a block becomes larger, each additional word is farther from the requested word and therefore less likely to be needed in the near future. The relationship between block size and hit ratio is complex, and no set approach is judged to be the best in all circumstances.   Pentium 4 and ARM cache organizations The processor core consists of four major components: Fetch/decode unit – fetches program instruction in order from the L2 cache, decodes these into a series of micro-operations, and stores the results in the L2 instruction cache Out-of-order execution logic – Schedules execution of the micro-operations subject to data dependencies and resource availability – thus micro-operations may be scheduled for execution in a different order than they were fetched from the instruction stream. As time permits, this unit schedules speculative execution of micro-operations that may be required in the future Execution units – These units execute micro-operations, fetching the required data from the L1 data cache and temporarily storing results in registers Memory subsystem – This unit includes the L2 and L3 caches and the system bus, which is used to access main memory when the L1 and L2 caches have a cache miss and to access the system I/O resources

  • Rendering My Fault Message

    - by onefloridacoder
    My coworkers setup  a nice way to get the fault messages from our service layer all the way back to the client’s service proxy layer.  This is what I needed to work on this afternoon.  Through a series of trials and errors I finally figured this out. The confusion was how I was looking at the exception in the quick watch viewer.  It appeared as though the EventArgs from the service call had somehow magically been cast back to FaultException(), not FaultException<T>.  I drilled into the EventArgs object with the quick watch and I copied this code to figure out where the Fault message was hiding.  Further, when I copied this quick watch code into the IDE I got squigglies.  Poop. 1: ((System 2: .ServiceModel 3: .FaultException<UnhandledExceptionFault>)(((System.Exception)(e.Result)).InnerException)).Detail.FaultMessage I wont bore you with the details but here’s how it turned out.   EventArgs which I’m calling “e” is not the result such as some collection of items you’re expecting.  It’s actually a FaultException, or in my case FaultException<T>.  Below is the calling code and the callback to handle the expected response or the fault from the completed event. 1: public void BeginRetrieveItems(Action<ObservableCollection<Model.Widget>> FindItemsCompleteCallback, Model.WidgetLocation location) 2: { 3: var proxy = new MyServiceContractClient(); 4:  5: proxy.RetrieveWidgetsCompleted += (s, e) => FindWidgetsCompleteCallback(FindWidgetsCompleted(e)); 6:  7: RetrieveWidgetsRequest request = new RetrieveWidgetsRequest { location.Id }; 8:  9: proxy.RetrieveWidgetsAsync(request); 10: } 11:  12: private ObservableCollection<Model.Widget> FindItemsCompleted(RetrieveWidgetsCompletedEventArgs e) 13: { 14: if (e.Error is FaultException<UnhandledExceptionFault>) 15: { 16: var fault = (FaultException<UnhandledExceptionFault>)e.Error; 17: var faultDetailMessage = fault.Detail.FaultMessage; 18:  19: UIMessageControlDuJour.Show(faultDetailMessage); 20: return new ObservableCollection<BinInventoryItemCountInfo>(); 21: } 22:  23: var widgets = new ObservableCollection<Model.Widget>(); 24:  25: if (e.Result.Widgets != null) 26: { 27: e.Result.Widgets.ToList().ForEach(w => widgets.Add(this.WidgetMapper.Map(w))); 28: } 29:  30: return widgets; 31: }

  • Microsoft Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX)

    - by Charles Cline
For all you admins and other technical people out there who have watched the Windows OS spool the data from network storage to your workstation and then back to network storage, watch for Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX).  I saw ODX at TechEd a few weeks ago and the data movement is primarily kept at the backend storage network.  EMC and other storage vendors are already posting about when they will have this functionality. Here's some information about it:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848056(v=vs.85).aspxhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848056(v=vs.85).aspx

  • No Sync of Files in Android U1 folder

    - by Oldbwl
My Desktop (Ubuntu 12.10) and Laptop (Win 7) happily sync files. The Ubuntu One folders are perfectly in sync. I have an Asus Transformer with the Ubuntu One app installed. I can read files from the cloud, and they download to a U1 folder. If I edit the files in the Asus (say a sheet in Kingsoft) it appears they never go back to the cloud unless I physically select the file to be uploaded. Is this correct?

  • Loading another domain's content in a modal iframe - acceptable?

    - by user568458
Is it okay to load another page in an iframe in a modal pop-up window - in terms of legal and ethical standards around displaying 3rd party content? I remember a few years ago there was controversy and a debate about whether it was okay to load another domain's page content on your domain in a full-width iframe, with your site providing a masthead with controls for favouriting, linking etc (e.g. like StumbleUpon). I seem to recall that the consensus was, that it was okay so long as you were clearly in no way claiming ownership of the 3rd party content or attempting to modify the content and so long as there was a 'go to site' button or equivalent; and that sites could ask you to exclude them, but generally speaking, it's an acceptable practice. How acceptable would it be considered to be to load another site's page within a modal (lightbox-like) popup box (following all the above principles: clear attribution and a prominent button that kills the iframe and gives them the 3rd party original)? My expectation would be that it would follow the same principles, and be acceptable so long as these conditions were met. Note that I'm asking about the likely legitimate responses of the 3rd party sites and possible legal position, not about usability or UX. I'm aware that this should never ever ever ever ever be the standard way external links are loaded, and that 99% of the time linking to external content like this would be terrible for usability. My specific use case is one of those 1% of cases where loading a separate page in this tab actually wouldn't be the expected behaviour of a link: an interactive data visualisation tool that also acts as a 'browser' of external content (science papers underlying the data it navigates). All other links within the interactive will change something while staying on the same page. If the user clicked one of these external links by mistake (as people often do, even when they are clearly, noisily labelled) and then had to back-button back, they would lose their fine-grained position in the interactive tool (jquery bbq hashchanges being not appropriate for all elements of the tool). New window/tab will simply open the target page on the 3rd party domain. Opening a new window/tab would also be an alternative option (and has its own disadvantages) - my question is, whether this is an alternative that could be considered (in terms of acceptable practice around intellectual property etc), irrespective of which option is best for UX: which is something we'll decide the proper way, based on actual UX testing.

  • What languages are the kids of today actually programming in? Does anyone have real data?

    - by Gaz Davidson
Back in the 80s colleges were teaching Pascal because it is easy to learn, while myself and many others like me were learning BASIC because it was not only easy to learn but accessible and also fashionable (for an extremely liberal definition of fashion) It has just occurred to me that empirical data on the actual programming languages kids are choosing to use should be a good indicator of which language would be the ideal first choice for educators. Please note that this question is not "what do you think is a good programming language for kids?"

  • Solving the context menu problem with drag and drop in trees

    - by Frank Nimphius
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} The following drag-and-drop problem has been reported on OTN: An ADF Faces tree component is configured with a af:collectionDropTarget tag to handle drop events. The same tree component also has a context menu defined that is shown when users select the tree with the right mouse button. The problem now was - and I could reproduce this - that the context menu stopped working after the first time the tree handled a drop event. The drag and drop use case is to associate employees from a table to a department in the tree using drag and drop. The drop handler code in the managed bean looked up the tree node that received the drop event to determine the department ID to assign to the employee. For this code similar to the one shown below was used List dropRowKey = (List) dropEvent.getDropSite(); //if no dropsite then drop area was not a data area if(dropRowKey == null){    return DnDAction.NONE; }                tree.setRowKey(dropRowKey); JUCtrlHierNodeBinding dropNode = (JUCtrlHierNodeBinding) tree.getRowData(); Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} So what happens in this code? The drop event contains the dropSite reference, which is the row key of the tree node that received the drop event. The code then sets the key to the tree in a call to getRowDate() returns the node information for the drop target (the department). This however causes the tree state to go out of synch with its model (ADF tree binding), which is known to cause issues. In this use case the issue caused by this is that the context menu no longer shows up. To fix the problem, the code needs to be changes to read the current row key from the key, then perform the drop operation and at the end set the origin (or model) row key back //memorize current row key Object currentRowKey = tree.getRowKey();        List dropRowKey = (List) dropEvent.getDropSite(); //if no dropsite then drop area was not a data area if(dropRowKey == null){   return DnDAction.NONE;   }              tree.setRowKey(dropRowKey); JUCtrlHierNodeBinding dropNode = (JUCtrlHierNodeBinding) tree.getRowData(); ... do your stuff here .... //set current row key back tree.setRowKey(currentRowKey); AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(tree); Node the code line that sets the row key back to its original value.

  • SSIS Expression to Find Text Between Characters

    - by Compudicted
It will be a super short and looks like the first and last post in January 2011. So back to the topic, I decided to share an SSIS expression I crafted to extract the value concealed between two characters (I needed to get a portion of text in a file path): Substring(@[User::MyString],FINDSTRING(@[User::MyString],"(",1)+1,FINDSTRING(@[User::MyString],")",1) - FINDSTRING(@[User::MyString],"(",1)-1) The value of MyString say could be c:\test\test(testing123456789).txt, then the resulting text captured testing123456789. Hopefully it will be needed to somebody.

  • Move Data into the Grid for Scalable, Predictable Response Times

    - by JuergenKress
CloudTran is pleased to introduce the availability of the CloudTran Transaction and Persistence Manager for creating scalable, reliable data services on the Oracle Coherence In-Memory Data Grid (IMDG). Use of IMDG architectures has been key to handling today’s web-scale loads because it eliminates database latency by storing important and frequently access data in memory instead of on disk. The CloudTran product lets developers easily use an IMDG for full ACID-compliant transactions without having to be concerned about the location or spread of data. The system has its own implementation of fast, scalable distributed transactions that does NOT depend on XA protocols but still guarantees all ACID properties. Plus, CloudTran asynchronously replicates data going into the IMDG to back-end datastores and back-up data centers, again ensuring ACID properties. CloudTran can be accessed through Java Persistence API (JPA via TopLink Grid) and now, through a new Low-Level API, or LLAPI. This is ideal for use in SOA applications that need data reliability, high availability, performance, and scalability. Still in limited beta release, the LLAPI gives developers the ability to use standard put/remove logic available in Coherence and then wrap logic with simple Spring annotations or XML+AspectJ to start transactions. An important feature of LLAPI is the ability to join transactions. This is a common outcome for SOA applications that need to reduce network traffic by aggregating data into single cache entries and then doing SOA service processing in the node holding the data. This results in the need to orchestrate transaction processing across multiple service calls. CloudTran has the capability to handle these “multi-client” transactions at speed with no loss in ACID properties. Developing software around an IMDG like Oracle Coherence is an important choice for today’s web-scale applications and services. But this introduces new architectural considerations to maintain scalability in light of increased network loads and data movement. Without using CloudTran, developers are faced with an incredibly difficult task to ensure data reliability, availability, performance, and scalability when working with an IMDG. Working with highly distributed data that is entirely volatile while stored in memory presents numerous edge cases where failures can result in data loss. The CloudTran product takes care of all of this, leaving developers with the confidence and peace of mind that all data is processed correctly. For those interested in evaluating the CloudTran product and IMDGs, take a look at this link for more information: http://www.CloudTran.com/downloadAPI.php, or, send your questions to [email protected]. We are hoping to leverage a static code analysis tool (Sonar) as part of our continuous integration server, and are hoping to determine some useful guidelines to serve as a base for allowing the deployment to continue. What conditions should we make mandatory before allowing a build to proceed to the next set of testing? The obvious answers include that it compiles and the unit tests are successful. But what are some other things we should require before allowing a build to not be rolled back?
