• Naming methods that perform HTTP GET/POST calls?

  In the application I am currently working on, there are generally 3 types of HTTP calls: pure GETs pure POSTs (updating the model with new data) "GET" POSTs (posting down an object to get some data back, no updates to the model) In the integration service, generally we name methods that post "postSomething()", and methods that get, "getSomething()". So my question is, if we have a "GET" POST, should the method be called: getSomething - seeing as the purpose is to obtain data postSomething - since we are technically using POST performSomeAction - arbitrary name that's more relevant to the action What are everyone's thoughts?

  Keeping up with the weather forecast can be hard when you are extra busy with work. If you need a simple but nice looking way to integrate weather monitoring into your Taskbar then join us as we look at WeatherBar. Setting Up & Using WeatherBar To get started unzip the following files, place them in an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, and create a shortcut. When you start WeatherBar for the first time you will be presented with the following window and a random/default location. To get WeatherBar set up for your location there are only two settings to adjust (using the “Pencil & Gear Buttons”). Clicking on the “Pencil Button” will open up this small window…enter the name of your location and click “OK”. Next click on the “Gear Button” where you can choose the “Update Interval” and “Measurement Format” that best suits your needs. Click “OK” when finished and WeatherBar will be ready to go. That definitely looks nice. When you are finished viewing this window minimize it to the “Taskbar Icon” instead of clicking on the “Close Button”…otherwise the entire app will close. Left click on the “Taskbar Icon” to bring the window back up… Hovering the mouse over the “Taskbar Icon” provides a nice thumbnail of the weather forecast. Right clicking on the “Taskbar Icon” will display a nice mini forecast. Conclusion While WeatherBar may not be for everyone it does provide a nice easy way to monitor the weather from your “Taskbar” without taking up a lot of room. After logout and login, right click on desktop is not working in gnome and unity but working in file manger.When I login into Pantheon session, I don't find an option to open Home folder and my login display manager theme is also changed.I want to get back to default Ubuntu login theme.Can i change the login theme with simple-lightdm manager. I dont want to mess up my system.Please hemp me how to fix these.

• Ubuntu hangs on booting up after a update

  I've made a clean install yesterday, for the first time restarted, everything went good and then after I updated packages and copied my old home directory to replace the new one, when I restarted it hung when it was booting. I tried reinstalling again and doing the same thing, but again same thing happened. Here's what I see, before when the Ubuntu logo with the five dots is shown: Then after that, 3 or 4 of the dots will load and hangs there. But when I go into the network mode, I can boot up my system, but of course same the graphics are just basic. Adding blacklist intel_ips to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf solves the first message, but still I get the broken pipe and CPU stack traces. The current kernel version is 3.2.0-25, I've tried booting up in the 3.2.0-23(the one the installer came with, but same results.) Also uninstalled apparmor, didn't help. I've installed Ubuntu again, this time without copying the home directory, also same result. --- UPDATE --- This problem was solved before with removing backports, but its back again! I've updated my laptop last night and the problem came back. It's definitely one of these packages. My /var/log/apt/term.log and /var/log/apt/history.log. I'm almost having the same situation. --- UPDATE --- I realized this also have happened on times that I have updated(haven't restarted after it) and my computer power has been cut off and its shutdown due to lack of power. And I realized if I just do as I answered but not in somewhere without GUI(networking mode has the GUI) it wouldn't work.

  Are there studies on what effects have programming languages on the brain or for that matter any other artificial languages in general, like mathematics ? Speaking from my personal experience I feel very different every time I speak Italian, I feel like a virtuoso on a quest but at the other end when I coded in machine code in debug.exe I felt like the main charcter inp(Movie). Why do I bring this up because I am suspecting that languages affect your mind and popular legends back this up too often: are full of mathematicians that crossed the Rubicon.

• Pay in the future should make you think in the present

  Distributed Computing - and more importantly “-as-a-Service” models of computing have a different cost model. This is something that sounds obvious on the surface but it’s often forgotten during the design and coding phase of a project. In on-premises computing, we’re used to purchasing a server and all of the hardware infrastructure and software licenses needed not only for one project, but several. This is an up-front or “sunk” cost that we consume by running code the organization needs to perform its function. Using a direct connection over wires you’ve already paid for, we don’t often have to think about bandwidth, hits on the data store or the amount of compute we use - we just know more is better. In a pay-as-you-go model, however, each of these architecture decisions has a potential cost impact. The amount of data you store, the number of times you access it, and the amount you send back all come with a charge. The offset is that you don’t buy anything at all up-front, so that sunk cost is freed up. And financial professionals know that money now is worth more than money later. Saving that up-front cost allows you to invest it in other things. It’s not just that you’re using things that now cost money - it’s that the design itself in distributed computing has a cost impact. That can be a really good thing, such as when you dynamically add capacity for paying customers. If you can tie back the cost of a series of clicks to what a user will pay to do so, you can set a profit margin that is easy to track. Here’s a case in point: Assume you are using a large instance in Windows Azure to compute some data that you retrieve from a SQL Azure database. If you don’t monitor the path of the application, you may not know what you are really using. Since you’re paying by the size of the instance, it’s best to maximize it all the time. Recently I evaluated just this situation, and found that downsizing the instance and adding another one where needed, adding a caching function to the application, moving part of the data into Windows Azure tables not only increased the speed of the application, but reduced the cost and more closely tied the cost to the profit. The key is this: from the very outset - the design - make sure you include metrics to measure for the cost/performance (sometimes these are the same) for your application. Windows Azure opens up awesome new ways of doing things, so make sure you study distributed systems architecture before you try and force in the application design you have on premises into your new application structure.

• 2-d lighting day/night cycle

  Off the back of this post in which I asked two questions and received one answer, which I accepted as a valid answer. I have decided to re-ask the outstanding question. I have implemented light points with shadow casting as shown here but I would like an overall map light with no point/light source. The map setup is a top-down 2-d 50X50 pixel grid. How would I go about implementing a day/night cycle lighting across a map?

• How can I prioritize wireless networks with network-manager

  Mostly I use my laptop in an environment where different wireless networks are available and I would like to preferably connect to one of those and only fall back to the other one if that one is not available. Is there any way of prioritizing which wireless networks network-manager preferably connects to? The only workaround I found so far was unchecking Connect Automatically in the options and re-enabling it when my preferred network is not available.

This library should be able to handle the collision detection and the movement of the sprites. Back in the 90's there was a Pascal library called Sprite Animation Toolkit by Ingemar Ragnemalm that handled a lot of the heft to create animations and the such. I am just wondering if there is anything like that in the iOS world?

  I'm writing a program that lets a user perform a Google search. When the result comes back, all of the links in the search results are links not to other sites but to Google, and if the user clicks on one, the page is fetched not from the other site but from Google. Can anyone explain how to fix this problem? • PPA Shows Up Under "All Software" That Is No Longer Enabled

  I used to use the Aurora builds of Firefox, but now I've uninstalled Firefox and gone back to Chromium. I've removed the PPA, but it still shows up under "All Software" in the Ubuntu Software Center, when I click on the arrow to the side of it to display my PPAs. I've checked the Software Sources to see if there's anything leftover, and there's nothing. I use Y PPA Manager, and there's nothing there to remove as well. How do I get rid of it?

• robots.txt not updated

  I have updated some url's and files in robots.txt file to block url's and files from google search results but, still files displaying in search results. As per a suggestion from a site I tried to update the robots.txt by below steps. In Google Webmaster tools, Health - Fetch as Google - type the url and click the fetch button. but, still files displaying in search results. Note: in Google Webmaster tools, Health - Blocked URL's - robots.txt file - downloaded date looks two dates back.

• Wrapping REST based Web Service

  I am designing a system that will be running online under Microsoft Windows Azure. One component is a REST based web service which will really be a wrapper (using proxy pattern) which calls the REST web services of a business partner, which has to do with BLOB storage (note: we are not using azure storage). The majority of the functionality will be taking a request, calling our partner web service, receiving the request and then passing that back to the client. There are a number of reasons for doing this, but one of the big ones is that we are going to support three clients: our desktop application (win and mac), mobile apps (iOS), and a web front end. Having a single API which we then send to our partner protects us if that partner ever changes. I want our service to support both JSON and XML for the data transfer format, JSON for web and probably XML for the desktop and mobile (we already have an XML parser in those products). Our partner also supports both of these formats. I was planning on using ASP.NET MVC 4 with the Web API. As I design this, the thing that concerns me is the static type checking of C#. What if the partner adds or removes elements from the data? We can probably defensively code for that, but I still feel some concern. Also, we have to do a fair amount of tedious coding, to setup our API and then to turn around and call our partner’s API. There probably is not much choice on it though. But, in the back of my mind I wonder if maybe a more dynamic language would be a better choice. I want to reach out and see if anybody has had to do this before, what technology solutions they have used to (I am not attached to this one, these days Azure can host other technologies), and if anybody who has done something like this can point out any issues that came up. Thanks! Researching the issue seems to only find solutions which focus on connecting a SOAP web service over a proxy server, and not what I am referring to here. • Ugly right-click menu and menubar in some applications

  After installing some packages (unfortunately I can't remember which ones) and installing some GTK3 themes (Faience / Faenza), my terminal's menubar and the right-click menu (in some contexts) started to look very ugly ! 1: Right-click menu 2: Terminal menubar, notice the white rounded corner rectangles, it looks WAY uglier on other themes Note that the menubar isn't "ugly" in most contexts, but it still is on the desktops and some applications. (For the menubar, I think the terminal is the only one concerned by this) I tried going back to my original theme, it didn't fix the problem.
