  • Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Microsoft BI Conference 2010)

    - by smisner
    Laissez les bons temps rouler" is a Cajun phrase that I heard frequently when I lived in New Orleans in the mid-1990s. It means "Let the good times roll!" and encapsulates a feeling of happy expectation. As I met with many of my peers and new acquaintances at the Microsoft BI Conference last week, this phrase kept running through my mind as people spoke about their plans in their respective businesses, the benefits and opportunities that the recent releases in the BI stack are providing, and their expectations about the future of the BI stack.Notwithstanding some jabs here and there to point out the platform is neither perfect now nor will be anytime soon (along with admissions that the competitors are also not perfect), and notwithstanding several missteps by the event organizers (which I don't care to enumerate), the overarching mood at the conference was positive. It was a refreshing change from the doom and gloom hovering over several conferences that I attended in 2009. Although many people expect economic hardships to continue over the coming year or so, everyone I know in the BI field is busier than ever and expects to stay busy for quite a while.Self-Service BISelf-service was definitely a theme of the BI conference. In the keynote, Ted Kummert opened with a look back to a fairy tale vision of self-service BI that he told in 2008. At that time, the fairy tale future was a time when "every end user was able to use BI technologies within their job in order to move forward more effectively" and transitioned to the present time in which SQL Server 2008 R2, Office 2010, and SharePoint 2010 are available to deliver managed self-service BI.This set of technologies is presumably poised to address the needs of the 80% of users that Kummert said do not use BI today. He proceeded to outline a series of activities that users ought to be able to do themselves--from simple changes to a report like formatting or an addtional data visualization to integration of an additional data source. The keynote then continued with a series of demonstrations of both current and future technology in support of self-service BI. Some highlights that interested me:PowerPivot, of course, is the flagship product for self-service BI in the Microsoft BI stack. In the TechEd keynote, which was open to the BI conference attendees, Amir Netz (twitter) impressed the audience by demonstrating interactivity with a workbook containing 100 million rows. He upped the ante at the BI keynote with his demonstration of a future-state PowerPivot workbook containing over 2 billion records. It's important to note that this volume of data is being processed by a server engine, and not in the PowerPivot client engine. (Yes, I think it's impressive, but none of my clients are typically wrangling with 2 billion records at a time. Maybe they're thinking too small. This ability to work quickly with large data sets has greater implications for BI solutions than for self-service BI, in my opinion.)Amir also demonstrated KPIs for the future PowerPivot, which appeared to be easier to implement than in any other Microsoft product that supports KPIs, apart from simple KPIs in SharePoint. (My initial reaction is that we have one more place to build KPIs. Great. It's confusing enough. I haven't seen how well those KPIs integrate with other BI tools, which will be important for adoption.)One more PowerPivot feature that Amir showed was a graphical display of the lineage for calculations. (This is hugely practical, especially if you build up calculations incrementally. You can more easily follow the logic from calculation to calculation. Furthermore, if you need to make a change to one calculation, you can assess the impact on other calculations.)Another product demonstration will be available within the next 30 days--Pivot for Reporting Services. If you haven't seen this technology yet, check it out at www.getpivot.com. (It definitely has a wow factor, but I'm skeptical about its practicality. However, I'm looking forward to trying it out with data that I understand.)Michael Tejedor (twitter) demonstrated a feature that I think is really interesting and not emphasized nearly enough--overshadowed by PowerPivot, no doubt. That feature is the Microsoft Business Intelligence Indexing Connector, which enables search of the content of Excel workbooks and Reporting Services reports. (This capability existed in MOSS 2007, but was more cumbersome to implement. The search results in SharePoint 2010 are not only cooler, but more useful by describing whether the content is found in a table or a chart, for example.)This may yet be the dawning of the age of self-service BI - a phrase I've heard repeated from time to time over the last decade - but I think BI professionals are likely to stay busy for a long while, and need not start looking for a new line of work. Kummert repeatedly referenced strategic BI solutions in contrast to self-service BI to emphasize that self-service BI is not a replacement for the services that BI professionals provide. After all, self-service BI does not appear magically on user desktops (or whatever device they want to use). A supporting infrastructure is necessary, and grows in complexity in proportion to the need to simplify BI for users.It's one thing to hear the party line touted by Microsoft employees at the BI keynote, but it's another to hear from the people who are responsible for implementing and supporting it within an organization. Rob Collie (blog | twitter), Kasper de Jonge (blog | twitter), Vidas Matelis (site | twitter), and I were invited to join Andrew Brust (blog | twitter) as he led a Birds of a Feather session at TechEd entitled "PowerPivot: Is It the BI Deal-Changer for Developers and IT Pros?" I would single out the prevailing concern in this session as the issue of control. On one side of this issue were those who were concerned that they would lose control once PowerPivot is implemented. On the other side were those who believed that data should be freely accessible to users in PowerPivot, and even acknowledgment that users would get the data they want even if it meant they would have to manually enter into a workbook to have it ready for analysis. For another viewpoint on how PowerPivot played out at the conference, see Rob Collie's observations.Collaborative BII have been intrigued by the notion of collaborative BI for a very long time. Before I discovered BI, I was a Lotus Notes developer and later a manager of developers, working in a software company that enabled collaboration in the legal industry. Not only did I help create collaborative systems for our clients, I created a complete project management from the ground up to collaboratively manage our custom development work. In that case, collaboration involved my team, my client contacts, and me. I was also able to produce my own BI from that system as well, but didn't know that's what I was doing at the time. Only in recent years has SharePoint begun to catch up with the capabilities that I had with Lotus Notes more than a decade ago. Eventually, I had the opportunity at that job to formally investigate BI as another product offering for our software, and the rest - as they say - is history. I built my first data warehouse with Scott Cameron (who has also ventured into the authoring world by writing Analysis Services 2008 Step by Step and was at the BI Conference last week where I got to reminisce with him for a bit) and that began a career that I never imagined at the time.Fast forward to 2010, and I'm still lauding the virtues of collaborative BI, if only the tools will catch up to my vision! Thus, I was anxious to see what Donald Farmer (blog | twitter) and Rita Sallam of Gartner had to say on the subject in their session "Collaborative Decision Making." As I suspected, the tools aren't quite there yet, but the vendors are moving in the right direction. One thing I liked about this session was a non-Microsoft perspective of the state of the industry with regard to collaborative BI. In addition, this session included a better demonstration of SharePoint collaborative BI capabilities than appeared in the BI keynote. Check out the video in the link to the session to see the demonstration. One of the use cases that was demonstrated was linking from information to a person, because, as Donald put it, "People don't trust data, they trust people."The Microsoft BI Stack in GeneralA question I hear all the time from students when I'm teaching is how to know what tools to use when there is overlap between products in the BI stack. I've never taken the time to codify my thoughts on the subject, but saw that my friend Dan Bulos provided good insight on this topic from a variety of perspectives in his session, "So Many BI Tools, So Little Time." I thought one of his best points was that ideally you should be able to design in your tool of choice, and then deploy to your tool of choice. Unfortunately, the ideal is yet to become real across the platform. The closest we come is with the RDL in Reporting Services which can be produced from two different tools (Report Builder or Business Intelligence Development Studio's Report Designer), manually, or by a third-party or custom application. I have touted the idea for years (and publicly said so about 5 years ago) that eventually more products would be RDL producers or consumers, but we aren't there yet. Maybe in another 5 years.Another interesting session that covered the BI stack against a backdrop of competitive products was delivered by Andrew Brust. Andrew did a marvelous job of consolidating a lot of information in a way that clearly communicated how various vendors' offerings compared to the Microsoft BI stack. He also made a particularly compelling argument about how the existence of an ecosystem around the Microsoft BI stack provided innovation and opportunities lacking for other vendors. Check out his presentation, "How Does the Microsoft BI Stack...Stack Up?"Expo HallI had planned to spend more time in the Expo Hall to see who was doing new things with the BI stack, but didn't manage to get very far. Each time I set out on an exploratory mission, I got caught up in some fascinating conversations with one or more of my peers. I find interacting with people that I meet at conferences just as important as attending sessions to learn something new. There were a couple of items that really caught me eye, however, that I'll share here.Pragmatic Works. Whether you develop SSIS packages, build SSAS cubes, or author SSRS reports (or all of the above), you really must take a look at BI Documenter. Brian Knight (twitter) walked me through the key features, and I must say I was impressed. Once you've seen what this product can do, you won't want to document your BI projects any other way. You can download a free single-user database edition, or choose from more feature-rich standard or professional editions.Microsoft Press ebooks. I also stopped by the O'Reilly Media booth to meet some folks that one of my acquisitions editors at Microsoft Press recommended. In case you haven't heard, Microsoft Press has partnered with O'Reilly Media for distribution and publishing. Apart from my interest in learning more about O'Reilly Media as an author, an advertisement in their booth caught me eye which I think is a really great move. When you buy Microsoft Press ebooks through the O'Reilly web site, you can receive it in any (or all) of the following formats where possible: PDF, epub, .mobi for Kindle and .apk for Android. You also have lifetime DRM-free access to the ebooks. As someone who is an avid collector of books, I fnd myself running out of room for storage. In addition, I travel a lot, and it's hard to lug my reference library with me. Today's e-reader options make the move to digital books a more viable way to grow my library. Having a variety of formats means I am not limited to a single device, and lifetime access means I don't have to worry about keeping track of where I've stored my files. Because the e-books are DRM-free, I can copy and paste when I'm compiling notes, and I can print pages when necessary. That's a winning combination in my mind!Overall, I was pleased with the BI conference. There were many more sessions that I couldn't attend, either because the room was full when I got there or there were multiple sessions running concurrently that I wanted to see. Fortunately, many of the sessions are accessible for viewing online at http://www.msteched.com/2010/NorthAmerica along with the TechEd sessions. You can spot the BI sessions by the yellow skyline on the title slide of the presentation as shown below. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • The Changing Face of PASS

    - by Bill Graziano
    I’m starting my sixth year on the PASS Board.  I served two years as the Program Director, two years as the Vice-President of Marketing and I’m starting my second year as the Executive Vice-President of Finance.  There’s a pretty good chance that if PASS has done something you don’t like or is doing something you don’t like, that I’m involved in one way or another. Andy Leonard asked in a comment on his blog if the Board had ever reversed itself based on community input.  He asserted that it hadn’t.  I disagree.  I’m not going to try and list all the changes we make inside portfolios based on feedback from and meetings with the community.  I’m going to focus on major governance issues since I was elected to the Board. Management Company The first big change was our management company.  Our old management company had a standard approach to running a non-profit.  It worked well when PASS was launched.  Having a ready-made structure and process to run the organization enabled the organization to grow quickly.  As time went on we were limited in some of the things we wanted to do.  The more involved you were with PASS, the more you saw these limitations.  Key volunteers were regularly providing feedback that they wanted certain changes that were difficult for us to accomplish.  The Board at that time wanted changes that were difficult or impossible to accomplish under that structure. This was not a simple change.  Imagine a $2.5 million dollar company letting all its employees go on a Friday and starting with a new staff on Monday.  We also had a very narrow window to accomplish that so that we wouldn’t affect the Summit – our only source of revenue.  We spent the year after the change rebuilding processes and putting on the Summit in Denver.  That’s a concrete example of a huge change that PASS made to better serve its members.  And it was a change that many in the community were telling us we needed to make. Financials We heard regularly from our members that they wanted our financials posted.  Today on our web site you can find audited financials going back to 2004.  We publish our budget at the start of each year.  If you ask a question about the financials on the PASS site I do my best to answer it.  I’m also trying to do a better job answering financial questions posted in other locations.  (And yes, I know I owe a few of you some blog posts.) That’s another concrete example of a change that our members asked for that the Board agreed was a good decision. Minutes When I started on the Board the meeting minutes were very limited.  The minutes from a two day Board meeting might fit on one page.  I think we did the bare minimum we were legally required to do.  Today Board meeting minutes run from 5 to 12 pages and go into incredible detail on what we talk about.  There are certain topics that are NDA but where possible we try to list the topic we discussed but that the actual discussion was under NDA.  We also publish the agenda of Board meetings ahead of time. This is another specific example where input from the community influenced the decision.  It was certainly easier to have limited minutes but I think the extra effort helps our members understand what’s going on. Board Q&A At the 2009 Summit the Board held its first public Q&A with our members.  We’d always been available individually to answer questions.  There’s a benefit to getting us all in one room and asking the really hard questions to watch us squirm.  We learn what questions we don’t have good answers for.  We get to see how many people in the crowd look interested in the various questions and answers. I don’t recall the genesis of how this came about.  I’m fairly certain there was some community pressure though. Board Votes Until last November, the Board only reported the vote totals and not how individual Board members voted.  That was one of the topics at a great lunch I had with Tim Mitchell and Kendal van Dyke at the Summit.  That was also the topic of the first question asked at the Board Q&A by Kendal.  Kendal expressed his opposition to to anonymous votes clearly and passionately and without trying to paint anyone into a corner.  Less than 24 hours later the PASS Board voted to make individual votes public unless the topic was under NDA.  That’s another area where the Board decided to change based on feedback from our members. Summit Location While this isn’t actually a governance issue it is one of the more public decisions we make that has taken some public criticism.  There is a significant portion of our members that want the Summit near them.  There is a significant portion of our members that like the Summit in Seattle.  There is a significant portion of our members that think it should move around the country.  I was one that felt strongly that there were significant, tangible benefits to our attendees to being in Seattle every year.  I’m also one that has been swayed by some very compelling arguments that we need to have at least one outside Seattle and then revisit the decision.  I can’t tell you how the Board will vote but I know the opinion of our members weighs heavily on the decision. Elections And that brings us to the grand-daddy of all governance issues.  My thesis for this blog post is that the PASS Board has implemented policy changes in response to member feedback.  It isn’t to defend or criticize our election process.  It’s just to say that is has been under going continuous change since I’ve been on the Board.  I ran for the Board in the fall of 2005.  I don’t know much about what happened before then.  I was actively volunteering for PASS for four years prior to that as a chapter leader and on the program committee.  I don’t recall any complaints about elections but that doesn’t mean they didn’t occur.  The questions from the Nominating Committee (NomCom) were trivial and the selection process rudimentary (For example, “Tell us about your accomplishments”).  I don’t even remember who I ran against or how many other people ran.  I ran for the VP of Marketing in the fall of 2007.  I don’t recall any significant changes the Board made in the election process for that election.  I think a lot of the changes in 2007 came from us asking the management company to work on the election process.  I was expecting a similar set of puff ball questions from my previous election.  Boy, was I in for a shock.  The NomCom had found a much better set of questions and really made the interview portion difficult.  The questions were much more behavioral in nature.  I’d already written about my vision for PASS and my goals.  They wanted to know how I handled adversity, how I handled criticism, how I handled conflict, how I handled troublesome volunteers, how I motivated people and how I responded to motivation. And many, many other things. They grilled me for over an hour.  I’ve done a fair bit of technical sales in my time.  I feel I speak well under pressure addressing pointed questions.  This interview intentionally put me under pressure.  In addition to wanting to know about my interpersonal skills, my work experience, my volunteer experience and my supervisory experience they wanted to see how I’d do under pressure.  They wanted to see who would respond under pressure and who wouldn’t.  It was a bit of a shock. That was the first big change I remember in the election process.  I know there were other improvements around the process but none of them stick in my mind quite like the unexpected hour-long grilling. The next big change I remember was after the 2009 elections.  Andy Warren was unhappy with the election process and wanted to make some changes.  He worked with Hannes at HQ and they came up with a better set of processes.  I think Andy moved PASS in the right direction.  Nonetheless, after the 2010 election even more people were very publicly clamoring for changes to our election process.  In August of 2010 we had a choice to make.  There were numerous bloggers criticizing the Board and our upcoming election.  The easy change would be to announce that we were changing the process in a way that would satisfy our critics.  I believe that a knee-jerk response to criticism is seldom correct. Instead the Board spent August and September and October and November listening to the community.  I visited two SQLSaturdays and asked questions of everyone I could.  I attended chapter meetings and asked questions of as many people as they’d let me.  At Summit I made it a point to introduce myself to strangers and ask them about the election.  At every breakfast I’d sit down at a table full of strangers and ask about the election.  I’m happy to say that I left most tables arguing about the election.  Most days I managed to get 2 or 3 breakfasts in. I spent less time talking to people that had already written about the election.  They were already expressing their opinion.  I wanted to talk to people that hadn’t spoken up.  I wanted to know what the silent majority thought.  The Board all attended the Q&A session where our members expressed their concerns about a variety of issues including the election. The PASS Board also chose to create the Election Review Committee.  We wanted people from the community that had been involved with PASS to look at our election process with fresh eyes while listening to what the community had to say and give us some advice on how we could improve the process.  I’m a part of this as is Andy Warren.  None of the other members are on the Board.  I’ve sat in numerous calls and interviews with this group and attended an open meeting at the Summit.  We asked anyone that wanted to discuss the election to come speak with us.  The ERC held an open meeting at the Summit and invited anyone to attend.  There are forums on the ERC web site where we’ve invited people to participate.  The ERC has reached to key people involved in recent elections.  The years that I haven’t mentioned also saw minor improvements in the election process.  Off the top of my head I don’t recall what exact changes were made each year.  Specifically since the 2010 election we’ve gone out of our way to seek input from the community about the process.  I’m not sure what more we could have done to invite feedback from the community. I think to say that we haven’t “fixed” the election process isn’t a fair criticism at this time.  We haven’t rushed any changes through the process.  If you don’t see any changes in our election process in July or August then I think it’s fair to criticize us for ignoring the community or ask for an explanation for what we’ve done. In Summary Andy’s main point was that the PASS Board hasn’t changed in response to our members wishes.  I think I’ve shown that time and time again the PASS Board has changed in response to what our members want.  There are only two outstanding issues: Summit location and elections.  The 2013 Summit location hasn’t been decided yet.  Our work on the elections is also in progress.  And at every step in the election review we’ve gone out of our way to listen to the community and incorporate their feedback on the process. I also hope I’m not encouraging everyone that wants some change in the organization to organize a “blog rush” against the Board.  We take public suggestions very seriously but we also take the time to evaluate those suggestions and learn what the rest of our members think and make a measured decision.

  • Searching for Windows User SID's in C#

    - by Ubiquitous Che
    Context Context first - issues I'm trying to resolve are below. One of our clients has asked as to quote how long it would take for us to improve one of our applications. This application currently provides basic user authentication in the form of username/password combinations. This client would like the ability for their employees to log-in using the details of whatever Windows User account is currently logged in at the time of running the application. It's not a deal-breaker if I tell them know - but the client might be willing to pay the costs of development to add this feature to the application. It's worth looking into. Based on my hunting around, it seems like storing the user login details against Domain\Username will be problematic if those details are changed. But Windows User SID's aren't supposed to change at all. I've got the impression that it would be best to record Windows Users by SID - feel free to relieve me of that if I'm wrong. I've been having a fiddle with some Windows API calls. From within C#, grabbing the current user's SID is easy enough. I can already take any user's SID and process it using LookupAccountSid to get username and domain for display purposes. For the interested, my code for this is at the end of this post. That's just the tip of the iceberg, however. The two issues below are completely outside my experience. Not only do I not know how to implement them - I don't even known how to find out how to implement them, or what the pitfalls are on various systems. Any help getting myself aimed in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Issue 1) Getting hold of the local user at runtime is meaningless if that user hasn't been granted access to the application. We will need to add a new section to our application's 'administrator console' for adding Windows Users (or groups) and assigning within-app permissions against those users. Something like an 'Add Windows User Login' button that will raise a pop-up window that will allow the user to search for available Windows User accounts on the network (not just the local machine) to be added to the list of available application logins. If there's already a component in .NET or Windows that I can shanghai into doing this for me, it would make me a very happy man. Issue 2) I also want to know how to take a given Windows User SID and check it against a given Windows User Group (probably taken from a database). I'm not sure how to get started with this one either, though I expect it to be easier than the issue above. For the Interested [STAThread] static void Main(string[] args) { MessageBox.Show(WindowsUserManager.GetAccountNameFromSID(WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().User.Value)); MessageBox.Show(WindowsUserManager.GetAccountNameFromSID("S-1-5-21-57989841-842925246-1957994488-1003")); } public static class WindowsUserManager { public static string GetAccountNameFromSID(string SID) { try { StringBuilder name = new StringBuilder(); uint cchName = (uint)name.Capacity; StringBuilder referencedDomainName = new StringBuilder(); uint cchReferencedDomainName = (uint)referencedDomainName.Capacity; WindowsUserManager.SID_NAME_USE sidUse; int err = (int)ESystemError.ERROR_SUCCESS; if (!WindowsUserManager.LookupAccountSid(null, SID, name, ref cchName, referencedDomainName, ref cchReferencedDomainName, out sidUse)) { err = Marshal.GetLastWin32Error(); if (err == (int)ESystemError.ERROR_INSUFFICIENT_BUFFER) { name.EnsureCapacity((int)cchName); referencedDomainName.EnsureCapacity((int)cchReferencedDomainName); err = WindowsUserManager.LookupAccountSid(null, SID, name, ref cchName, referencedDomainName, ref cchReferencedDomainName, out sidUse) ? (int)ESystemError.ERROR_SUCCESS : Marshal.GetLastWin32Error(); } } if (err != (int)ESystemError.ERROR_SUCCESS) throw new ApplicationException(String.Format("Could not retrieve acount name from SID. {0}", SystemExceptionManager.GetDescription(err))); return String.Format(@"{0}\{1}", referencedDomainName.ToString(), name.ToString()); } catch (Exception ex) { if (ex is ApplicationException) throw ex; throw new ApplicationException("Could not retrieve acount name from SID", ex); } } private enum SID_NAME_USE { SidTypeUser = 1, SidTypeGroup, SidTypeDomain, SidTypeAlias, SidTypeWellKnownGroup, SidTypeDeletedAccount, SidTypeInvalid, SidTypeUnknown, SidTypeComputer } [DllImport("advapi32.dll", EntryPoint = "GetLengthSid", CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] private static extern int GetLengthSid(IntPtr pSID); [DllImport("advapi32.dll", SetLastError = true)] private static extern bool ConvertStringSidToSid( string StringSid, out IntPtr ptrSid); [DllImport("advapi32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)] private static extern bool LookupAccountSid( string lpSystemName, [MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.LPArray)] byte[] Sid, StringBuilder lpName, ref uint cchName, StringBuilder ReferencedDomainName, ref uint cchReferencedDomainName, out SID_NAME_USE peUse); private static bool LookupAccountSid( string lpSystemName, string stringSid, StringBuilder lpName, ref uint cchName, StringBuilder ReferencedDomainName, ref uint cchReferencedDomainName, out SID_NAME_USE peUse) { byte[] SID = null; IntPtr SID_ptr = IntPtr.Zero; try { WindowsUserManager.ConvertStringSidToSid(stringSid, out SID_ptr); int err = SID_ptr == IntPtr.Zero ? • ASP.NET MVC 2 UpdateModel() is not updating values in memory or database

    - by campbelt
    Hello, I am new to MVC, and so am working through the NerdDinner tutorial, here. In particular, I'm running into problems with the use of the UpdateModel method, which is explained in the part five of that tutorial. The problem is, when I try to edit the value of a dinner object using the UpdateModel method, the values do not get updated, and no exceptions are thrown. Oddly, I am not having any trouble with the Create or Delete features that are illustrated in the tutorial. Only the update feature isn't working. Below, I have included the Controller code that I am using, as well as the view markup, which is contained in both an aspx View file and an ascx Partial View file. Here is the code inside my Controller, called DinnerController.cs: // // GET: /Dinners/Edit/2 [Authorize] public ActionResult Edit(int id) { Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id); return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner)); } // // POST: /Dinners/Edit/2 [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post), Authorize] public ActionResult Edit(int id, FormCollection formValues) { Dinner dinner = dinnerRepository.GetDinner(id); try { UpdateModel(dinner); var x = ViewData.GetModelStateErrors(); // <-- to catch other ModelState errors dinnerRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Details", new { id = dinner.DinnerID }); } catch { ModelState.AddRuleViolations(dinner.GetRuleViolations()); return View(new DinnerFormViewModel(dinner)); } } The line with the comment "to catch other ModelState errors" was added after reading a possible solution from another StackOverflow thread, here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1461283/asp-net-mvc-updatemodel-not-updating-but-not-throwing-error Unfortunately, that solution didn't help me. Here is the corresponding markup in my Dinners/Edit.aspx View: <asp:Content ID="Main" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>Edit Dinner</h2> <% Html.RenderPartial("DinnerForm"); %> </asp:Content> Here is the corresponding markup in my DinnerForm.ascx Partial View. This Partial View file is also used by the Create feature, which is working fine: <%=Html.ValidationSummary("Please correct the errors and try again.") %> <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <fieldset> <p> <label for="Title">Dinner Title:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Title)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Title", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="EventDate">EventDate:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.EventDate, new { value = String.Format("{0:g}", Model.Dinner.EventDate) })%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("EventDate", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Description">Description:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Description)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Description", "*")%> </p> <p> <label for="Address">Address:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Address)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Address", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Country">Country:</label> <%=Html.DropDownListFor(model => Model.Dinner.Country, Model.Countries)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Country", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="ContactPhone">ContactPhone #:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.ContactPhone)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("ContactPhone", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Latitude">Latitude:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Latitude)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Latitude", "*") %> </p> <p> <label for="Longitude">Longitude:</label> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(model => Model.Dinner.Longitude)%> <%=Html.ValidationMessage("Longitude", "*") %> </p> <p> <input type="submit" value="Save"/> </p> </fieldset> <% } %> In any case, I've been hitting away at this for hours, and I'm out of ideas. So, I'm hoping someone here can help nudge me in the right direction, in order to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

  • Why do I get this error when I try to push my SQLite3 to Postgresql (via Taps) on Cedar Stack?

    - by rhodee
    I've done quite a bit of research on Heroku Dev Center and I am now looking to the community for help. Here is my problem. I can not push my db to Heroku Cedar Stack. I am trying to migrate a sqlite database to postgresql via Taps gem. When I am ready to deploy I run: bundle install --without production heroku run db:push I get the following result: Running db:seed attached to terminal... up, run.17 sh: db:seed: not found heroku run rake db:migrate And when I run the migration: heroku run rake db:migrate I get the following: Running rake db:migrate attached to terminal... up, run.18 rake aborted! My database.yml production environment still points to sqlite adapter even after I have run the following command successfully: heroku config:add BUNDLE_WITHOUT="test development" --app app_name_on_heroku Out of ideas. I do know in theory how it should work, but having trouble getting started in code... I know, at least I think, this program is not real time and its not meant to be. Some how I need to create a scheduler dispatch to control the threads in the order they should run... RR FCFS SJF ect. Right now I don't have a dispatcher. What I do have is semaphores/ mutex to control the threads. This code does run FCFS... and I have been trying to use semaphores to create a RR.. but having a lot of trouble. I believe it would be easier to create a dispatcher but I dont know how. I need help, I am not looking for answers just direction.. some sample code will help to understand a bit more. Thank you.

  • OpenGL basics: calling glDrawElements once per object

    - by Bethor
    Hi all, continuing on from my explorations of the basics of OpenGL (see this question), I'm trying to figure out the basic principles of drawing a scene with OpenGL. I am trying to render a simple cube repeated n times in every direction. My method appears to yield terrible performance : 1000 cubes brings performance below 50fps (on a QuadroFX 1800, roughly a GeForce 9600GT). My method for drawing these cubes is as follows: done once: set up a vertex buffer and array buffer containing my cube vertices in model space set up an array buffer indexing the cube for drawing as 12 triangles done for each frame: update uniform values used by the vertex shader to move all cubes at once done for each cube, for each frame: update uniform values used by the vertex shader to move each cube to its position call glDrawElements to draw the positioned cube Is this a sane method ? If not, how does one go about something like this ? I'm guessing I need to minimize calls to glUniform, glDrawElements, or both, but I'm not sure how to do that. Full code for my little test : (depends on gletools and pyglet) I'm aware that my init code (at least) is really ugly; I'm concerned with the rendering code for each frame right now, I'll move to something a little less insane for the creation of the vertex buffers and such later on. import pyglet from pyglet.gl import * from pyglet.window import key from numpy import deg2rad, tan from gletools import ShaderProgram, FragmentShader, VertexShader, GeometryShader vertexData = [-0.5, -0.5, -0.5, 1.0, -0.5, 0.5, -0.5, 1.0, 0.5, -0.5, -0.5, 1.0, 0.5, 0.5, -0.5, 1.0, -0.5, -0.5, 0.5, 1.0, -0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 1.0, 0.5, -0.5, 0.5, 1.0, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 1.0] elementArray = [2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3,## back face 4, 7, 6, 4, 5, 7,## front face 1, 3, 5, 3, 7, 5,## top face 2, 0, 4, 2, 4, 6,## bottom face 1, 5, 4, 0, 1, 4,## left face 6, 7, 3, 6, 3, 2]## right face def toGLArray(input): return (GLfloat*len(input))(*input) def toGLushortArray(input): return (GLushort*len(input))(*input) def initPerspectiveMatrix(aspectRatio = 1.0, fov = 45): frustumScale = 1.0 / tan(deg2rad(fov) / 2.0) fzNear = 0.5 fzFar = 300.0 perspectiveMatrix = [frustumScale*aspectRatio, 0.0 , 0.0 , 0.0 , 0.0 , frustumScale, 0.0 , 0.0 , 0.0 , 0.0 , (fzFar+fzNear)/(fzNear-fzFar) , -1.0, 0.0 , 0.0 , (2*fzFar*fzNear)/(fzNear-fzFar), 0.0 ] return perspectiveMatrix class ModelObject(object): vbo = GLuint() vao = GLuint() eao = GLuint() initDone = False verticesPool = [] indexPool = [] def __init__(self, vertices, indexing): super(ModelObject, self).__init__() if not ModelObject.initDone: glGenVertexArrays(1, ModelObject.vao) glGenBuffers(1, ModelObject.vbo) glGenBuffers(1, ModelObject.eao) glBindVertexArray(ModelObject.vao) initDone = True self.numIndices = len(indexing) self.offsetIntoVerticesPool = len(ModelObject.verticesPool) ModelObject.verticesPool.extend(vertices) self.offsetIntoElementArray = len(ModelObject.indexPool) ModelObject.indexPool.extend(indexing) glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, ModelObject.vbo) glEnableVertexAttribArray(0) #position glVertexAttribPointer(0, 4, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 0, 0) glBindBuffer(GL_ELEMENT_ARRAY_BUFFER, ModelObject.eao) glBufferData(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, len(ModelObject.verticesPool)*4, toGLArray(ModelObject.verticesPool), GL_STREAM_DRAW) glBufferData(GL_ELEMENT_ARRAY_BUFFER, len(ModelObject.indexPool)*2, toGLushortArray(ModelObject.indexPool), GL_STREAM_DRAW) def draw(self): glDrawElements(GL_TRIANGLES, self.numIndices, GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT, self.offsetIntoElementArray) class PositionedObject(object): def __init__(self, mesh, pos, objOffsetUf): super(PositionedObject, self).__init__() self.mesh = mesh self.pos = pos self.objOffsetUf = objOffsetUf def draw(self): glUniform3f(self.objOffsetUf, self.pos[0], self.pos[1], self.pos[2]) self.mesh.draw() w = 800 h = 600 AR = float(h)/float(w) window = pyglet.window.Window(width=w, height=h, vsync=False) window.set_exclusive_mouse(True) pyglet.clock.set_fps_limit(None) ## input forward = [False] left = [False] back = [False] right = [False] up = [False] down = [False] inputs = {key.Z: forward, key.Q: left, key.S: back, key.D: right, key.UP: forward, key.LEFT: left, key.DOWN: back, key.RIGHT: right, key.PAGEUP: up, key.PAGEDOWN: down} ## camera camX = 0.0 camY = 0.0 camZ = -1.0 def simulate(delta): global camZ, camX, camY scale = 10.0 move = scale*delta if forward[0]: camZ += move if back[0]: camZ += -move if left[0]: camX += move if right[0]: camX += -move if up[0]: camY += move if down[0]: camY += -move pyglet.clock.schedule(simulate) @window.event def on_key_press(symbol, modifiers): global forward, back, left, right, up, down if symbol in inputs.keys(): inputs[symbol][0] = True @window.event def on_key_release(symbol, modifiers): global forward, back, left, right, up, down if symbol in inputs.keys(): inputs[symbol][0] = False ## uniforms for shaders camOffsetUf = GLuint() objOffsetUf = GLuint() perspectiveMatrixUf = GLuint() camRotationUf = GLuint() program = ShaderProgram( VertexShader(''' #version 330 layout(location = 0) in vec4 objCoord;     They are located under: share\gtk-2.0\demo But none of them contains a main function, how can I make the following textscroll.c actually work: /* Text Widget/Automatic scrolling * * This example demonstrates how to use the gravity of * GtkTextMarks to keep a text view scrolled to the bottom * while appending text. */ #include <gtk/gtk.h> #include "demo-common.h" /* Scroll to the end of the buffer. */ static gboolean scroll_to_end (GtkTextView *textview) { GtkTextBuffer *buffer; GtkTextIter iter; GtkTextMark *mark; char *spaces; static int count; buffer = gtk_text_view_get_buffer (textview); /* Get "end" mark.   • Translate ImageButton from C# to XAML

    - by Bill
    I worked out the C# code to create an ImageButton (below) that has three images (one base-image and two overlays) and three text boxes as the face of the button. I am inheriting from the Button class, which unfortunately includes several components that I didn't realize would surface until after coding and need to remove, namely the bright-blue surrounding border on IsMouseOver, and any visible borders between the buttons, as the buttons will end up in a wrapPanel and the borders need to be seamless. Now that the format has been worked out in C#, I expect that I need to translate to XAML so that I can create a ControlTemplate to get the functionality necessary, however I am not certain as to the process of translating from C# to XAML. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? public class ACover : Button { Image cAImage = null; Image jCImage = null; Image jCImageOverlay = null; TextBlock ATextBlock = null; TextBlock AbTextBlock = null; TextBlock ReleaseDateTextBlock = null; private string _TracksXML = ""; public ACover() { Grid cArtGrid = new Grid(); cArtGrid.Background = new SolidColorBrush(Color.FromRgb(38, 44, 64)); cArtGrid.Margin = new System.Windows.Thickness(5, 10, 5, 10); RowDefinition row1 = new RowDefinition(); row1.Height = new GridLength(225); RowDefinition row2 = new RowDefinition(); row2.Height = new GridLength(0, GridUnitType.Auto); RowDefinition row3 = new RowDefinition(); row3.Height = new GridLength(0, GridUnitType.Auto); RowDefinition row4 = new RowDefinition(); row4.Height = new GridLength(0, GridUnitType.Auto); cArtGrid.RowDefinitions.Add(row1); cArtGrid.RowDefinitions.Add(row2); cArtGrid.RowDefinitions.Add(row3); cArtGrid.RowDefinitions.Add(row4); ColumnDefinition col1 = new ColumnDefinition(); col1.Width = new GridLength(0, GridUnitType.Auto); cArtGrid.ColumnDefinitions.Add(col1); jCImage = new Image(); jCImage.Height = 240; jCImage.Width = 260; jCImage.VerticalAlignment = VerticalAlignment.Top; jCImage.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(Properties.Settings.Default.pathToGridImages + "jc.png", UriKind.Absolute)); cArtGrid.Children.Add(jCImage); cArtImage = new Image(); cArtImage.Height = 192; cArtImage.Width = 192; cArtImage.Margin = new System.Windows.Thickness(3, 7, 0, 0); cArtImage.VerticalAlignment = VerticalAlignment.Top; cArtGrid.Children.Add(cArtImage); jCImageOverlay = new Image(); jCImageOverlay.Height = 192; jCImageOverlay.Width = 192; jCImageOverlay.Margin = new System.Windows.Thickness(3, 7, 0, 0); jCImageOverlay.VerticalAlignment = VerticalAlignment.Top; jCImageOverlay.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri( Properties.Settings.Default.pathToGridImages + "jc-overlay.png", UriKind.Absolute)); coverArtGrid.Children.Add(jCImageOverlay); ATextBlock = new TextBlock(); ATextBlock.Foreground = new SolidColorBrush(Color.FromRgb(173, 176, 198)); ATextBlock.Margin = new Thickness(10, -10, 0, 0); cArtGrid.Children.Add(ATextBlock); AlTextBlock = new TextBlock(); AlTextBlock.Margin = new Thickness(10, 0, 0, 0); AlTextBlock.Foreground = new SolidColorBrush(Color.FromRgb(173, 176, 198)); cArtGrid.Children.Add(AlTextBlock); RDTextBlock = new TextBlock(); RDTextBlock.Margin = new Thickness(10, 0, 0, 0); RDTextBlock.Foreground = new SolidColorBrush(Color.FromRgb(173, 176, 198)); cArtGrid.Children.Add(RDTextBlock); Grid.SetColumn(jCImage, 0); Grid.SetRow(jCImage, 0); Grid.SetColumn(jCImageOverlay, 0); Grid.SetRow(jCImageOverlay, 0); Grid.SetColumn(cArtImage, 0); Grid.SetRow(cArtImage, 0); Grid.SetColumn(ATextBlock, 0); Grid.SetRow(ATextBlock, 1); Grid.SetColumn(AlTextBlock, 0); Grid.SetRow(AlTextBlock, 2); Grid.SetColumn(RDTextBlock, 0); Grid.SetRow(RDTextBlock, 3); this.Content = cArtGrid; } public string A { get { if (ATextBlock != null) return ATextBlock.Text; else return String.Empty; } set { if (ATextBlock != null) ATextBlock.Text = value; } } public string Al { get { if (AlTextBlock != null) return AlTextBlock.Text; else return String.Empty; } set { if (AlTextBlock != null) AlTextBlock.Text = value; } } public string RD { get { if (RDTextBlock != null) return RDTextBlock.Text; else return String.Empty; } set { if (RDTextBlock != null) RDTextBlock.Text = value; } } public ImageSource Image { get { if (cArtImage != null) return cArtImage.Source; else return null; } set { if (cArtImage != null) cArtImage.Source = value; } } public string TracksXML { get { return _TracksXML; } set { _TracksXML = value; } } public double ImageWidth { get { if (cArtImage != null) return cArtImage.Width; else return double.NaN; } set { if (cArtImage != null) cArtImage.Width = value; } } public double ImageHeight { get { if (cArtImage != null) return cArtImage.Height; else return double.NaN; } set { if (cArtImage != null) cArtImage.Height = value; } } }

  • Tracking finger move in order to rotate a triangle : tracking is not perfect

    - by Laurent BERNABE
    I've written a custom view, with the OpenGL_1 technology, in order to let user rotate a red triangle just by dragging it along x axis. (Will give a rotation around Y axis). It works, but there is a bit of latency when dragging from one direction to the other (without releasing the mouse/finger). So it seems that my code is not yet "goal perfect". (I am convinced that no code is perfect in itself). I thought of using a quaternion, but maybe it won't be so usefull : must I really use a Quaternion (or a kind of Matrix) ? I've designed application for Android 4.0.3, but it could fit into Android api 3 (Android 1.5) as well (at least, I think it could). So here is my main layout : activity_main.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:orientation="vertical" > <com.laurent_bernabe.android.triangletournant3d.MyOpenGLView android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" /> </LinearLayout> Here is my main activity : MainActivity.java package com.laurent_bernabe.android.triangletournant3d; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.support.v4.app.NavUtils; import android.view.Menu; import android.view.MenuItem; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); } @Override public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) { getMenuInflater().inflate(R.menu.activity_main, menu); return true; } @Override public boolean onOptionsItemSelected(MenuItem item) { switch (item.getItemId()) { case android.R.id.home: NavUtils.navigateUpFromSameTask(this); return true; } return super.onOptionsItemSelected(item); } } And finally, my OpenGL view MyOpenGLView.java package com.laurent_bernabe.android.triangletournant3d; import java.nio.ByteBuffer; import java.nio.ByteOrder; import java.nio.FloatBuffer; import javax.microedition.khronos.egl.EGLConfig; import javax.microedition.khronos.opengles.GL10; import android.content.Context; import android.graphics.Point; import android.opengl.GLSurfaceView; import android.opengl.GLSurfaceView.Renderer; import android.opengl.GLU; import android.util.AttributeSet; import android.view.MotionEvent; public class MyOpenGLView extends GLSurfaceView implements Renderer { public MyOpenGLView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) { super(context, attrs); setRenderer(this); } public MyOpenGLView(Context context) { this(context, null); } @Override public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent event) { int actionMasked = event.getActionMasked(); switch(actionMasked){ case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN: savedClickLocation = new Point((int) event.getX(), (int) event.getY()); break; case MotionEvent.ACTION_UP: savedClickLocation = null; break; case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE: Point newClickLocation = new Point((int) event.getX(), (int) event.getY()); int dx = newClickLocation.x - savedClickLocation.x; angle += Math.toRadians(dx); break; } return true; } @Override public void onDrawFrame(GL10 gl) { gl.glClear(GL10.GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT | GL10.GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT); gl.glLoadIdentity(); GLU.gluLookAt(gl, 0f, 0f, 5f, 0f, 0f, 0f, 0f, 1f, 0f ); gl.glRotatef(angle, 0f, 1f, 0f); gl.glColor4f(1f, 0f, 0f, 0f); gl.glVertexPointer(2, GL10.GL_FLOAT, 0, triangleCoordsBuff); gl.glDrawArrays(GL10.GL_TRIANGLES, 0, 3); } @Override public void onSurfaceChanged(GL10 gl, int width, int height) { gl.glViewport(0, 0, width, height); gl.glMatrixMode(GL10.GL_PROJECTION); gl.glLoadIdentity(); GLU.gluPerspective(gl, 60f, (float) width / height, 0.1f, 10f); gl.glMatrixMode(GL10.GL_MODELVIEW); } @Override public void onSurfaceCreated(GL10 gl, EGLConfig config) { gl.glEnable(GL10.GL_DEPTH_TEST); gl.glClearDepthf(1.0f); gl.glEnableClientState(GL10.GL_VERTEX_ARRAY); buildTriangleCoordsBuffer(); } private void buildTriangleCoordsBuffer() { ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.allocateDirect(4*triangleCoords.length); buffer.order(ByteOrder.nativeOrder()); triangleCoordsBuff = buffer.asFloatBuffer(); triangleCoordsBuff.put(triangleCoords); triangleCoordsBuff.rewind(); } private float [] triangleCoords = {-1f, -1f, +1f, -1f, +1f, +1f}; private FloatBuffer triangleCoordsBuff; private float angle = 0f; private Point savedClickLocation; } I don't think I really have to give you my manifest file. But I can if you think it is necessary. I've just tested on Emulator, not on real device. So, how can improve the reactivity ? Thanks in advance.

  • Reading xml document in firefox

    - by Searock
    I am trying to read customers.xml using javascript. My professor has taught us to read xml using `ActiveXObjectand he has given us an assignment to create a sample login page which checks username and password by reading customers.xml. I am trying to use DOMParser so that it works with firefox. But when I click on Login button I get this error. Error: syntax error Source File: file:///C:/Users/Searock/Desktop/home/project/project/login.html Line: 1, Column: 1 Source Code: customers.xml Here's my code. login.js var xmlDoc = 0; function checkUser() { var user = document.login.txtLogin.value; var pass = document.login.txtPass.value; //xmlDoc = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM"); /* xmlDoc = document.implementation.createDocument("","",null); xmlDoc.async = "false"; xmlDoc.onreadystatechange = redirectUser; xmlDoc.load("customers.xml"); */ var parser = new DOMParser(); xmlDoc = parser.parseFromString("customers.xml", "text/xml"); alert(xmlDoc.documentElement.nodeName); xmlDoc.async = "false"; xmlDoc.onreadystatechange = redirectUser; } function redirectUser() { alert(''); var user = document.login.txtLogin.value; var pass = document.login.txtPass.value; var log = 0; if(xmlDoc.readyState == 4) { xmlObj = xmlDoc.documentElement; var len = xmlObj.childNodes.length; for(i = 0; i < len; i++) { var nodeElement = xmlObj.childNodes[i]; var userXml = nodeElement.childNodes[0].firstChild.nodeValue; var passXml = nodeElement.childNodes[1].firstChild.nodeValue; var idXML = nodeElement.attributes[0].value if(userXml == user && passXml == pass) { log = 1; document.cookie = escape(idXML); document.login.submit(); } } } if(log == 0) { var divErr = document.getElementById('Error'); divErr.innerHTML = "<b>Login Failed</b>"; } } customers.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <customers> <customer custid="CU101"> <user>jack</user> <pwd>PW101</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> <customer custid="CU102"> <user>jill</user> <pwd>PW102</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> <customer custid="CU103"> <user>john</user> <pwd>PW103</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> <customer custid="CU104"> <user>jeff</user> <pwd>PW104</pwd> <email>[email protected]</email> </customer> </customers> I get parsererror message on line alert(xmlDoc.documentElement.nodeName); I don't know what's wrong with my code.   • Mutating the expression tree of a predicate to target another type

    - by Jon
    Intro In the application I 'm currently working on, there are two kinds of each business object: the "ActiveRecord" type, and the "DataContract" type. So for example, we have: namespace ActiveRecord { class Widget { public int Id { get; set; } } } namespace DataContracts { class Widget { public int Id { get; set; } } } The database access layer takes care of "translating" between hierarchies: you can tell it to update a DataContracts.Widget, and it will magically create an ActiveRecord.Widget with the same property values and save that. The problem I have surfaced when attempting to refactor this database access layer. The Problem I want to add methods like the following to the database access layer: // Widget is DataContract.Widget interface DbAccessLayer { IEnumerable<Widget> GetMany(Expression<Func<Widget, bool>> predicate); } The above is a simple general-use "get" method with custom predicate. The only point of interest is that I 'm not passing in an anonymous function but rather an expression tree. This is done because inside DbAccessLayer we have to query ActiveRecord.Widget efficiently (LINQ to SQL) and not have the database return all ActiveRecord.Widget instances and then filter the enumerable collection. We need to pass in an expression tree, so we ask for one as the parameter for GetMany. The snag: the parameter we have needs to be magically transformed from an Expression<Func<DataContract.Widget, bool>> to an Expression<Func<ActiveRecord.Widget, bool>>. This is where I haven't managed to pull it off... Attempted Solution What we 'd like to do inside GetMany is: IEnumerable<DataContract.Widget> GetMany( Expression<Func<DataContract.Widget, bool>> predicate) { var lambda = Expression.Lambda<Func<ActiveRecord.Widget, bool>>( predicate.Body, predicate.Parameters); // use lambda to query ActiveRecord.Widget and return some value } This won't work because in a typical scenario, for example if: predicate == w => w.Id == 0; ...the expression tree contains a MemberAccessExpression instance which has a MemberInfo property (named Member) that point to members of DataContract.Widget. There are also ParameterExpression instances both in the expression tree and in its parameter expression collection (predicate.Parameters); After searching a bit, I found System.Linq.Expressions.ExpressionVisitor (its source can be found here in the context of a how-to, very helpful) which is a convenient way to modify an expression tree. Armed with this, I implemented a visitor. This simple visitor only takes care of changing the types in member access and parameter expressions. It may not be complete, but it's fine for the expression w => w.Id == 0. internal class Visitor : ExpressionVisitor { private readonly Func<Type, Type> dataContractToActiveRecordTypeConverter; public Visitor(Func<Type, Type> dataContractToActiveRecordTypeConverter) { this.dataContractToActiveRecordTypeConverter = dataContractToActiveRecordTypeConverter; } protected override Expression VisitMember(MemberExpression node) { var dataContractType = node.Member.ReflectedType; var activeRecordType = this.dataContractToActiveRecordTypeConverter(dataContractType); var converted = Expression.MakeMemberAccess( base.Visit(node.Expression), activeRecordType.GetProperty(node.Member.Name)); return converted; } protected override Expression VisitParameter(ParameterExpression node) { var dataContractType = node.Type; var activeRecordType = this.dataContractToActiveRecordTypeConverter(dataContractType); return Expression.Parameter(activeRecordType, node.Name); } } With this visitor, GetMany becomes: IEnumerable<DataContract.Widget> GetMany( Expression<Func<DataContract.Widget, bool>> predicate) { var visitor = new Visitor(...); var lambda = Expression.Lambda<Func<ActiveRecord.Widget, bool>>( visitor.Visit(predicate.Body), predicate.Parameters.Select(p => visitor.Visit(p)); var widgets = ActiveRecord.Widget.Repository().Where(lambda); // This is just for reference, see below Expression<Func<ActiveRecord.Widget, bool>> referenceLambda = w => w.Id == 0; // Here we 'd convert the widgets to instances of DataContract.Widget and // return them -- this has nothing to do with the question though. } Results The good news is that lambda is constructed just fine. The bad news is that it isn't working; it's blowing up on me when I try to use it (the exception messages are really not helpful at all). I have examined the lambda my code produces and a hardcoded lambda with the same expression; they look exactly the same. I spent hours in the debugger trying to find some difference, but I can't. When predicate is w => w.Id == 0, lambda looks exactly like referenceLambda. But the latter works with e.g. IQueryable<T>.Where, while the former does not (I have tried this in the immediate window of the debugger). I should also mention that when predicate is w => true, it all works just fine. Therefore I am assuming that I 'm not doing enough work in Visitor, but I can't find any more leads to follow on. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Stupid problem with Javascript calculations and postbacks

    - by rockinthesixstring
    I'm working on an ASP.NET web app where I'm using a Wizard to take the client through a large series of steps. One of the steps includes calculating a bunch of numbers on the fly... the numbers calculate properly but when I click "next" and then go back again... some of the numbers are not retained. Here is the calculation function function CalculateFields() { txtSellingPrice = document.getElementById('<%=txtSellingPrice.ClientID %>'); txtBalanceSheet = document.getElementById('<%=txtBalanceSheet.ClientID %>'); txtDownPayment = document.getElementById('<%=txtDownPayment.ClientID %>'); txtSusEarn = document.getElementById('<%=txtSusEarn.ClientID %>'); txtSusRev = document.getElementById('<%=txtSusRev.ClientID %>'); txtBalanceMult = document.getElementById('<%=txtBalanceMult.ClientID %>'); txtGoodwillMult = document.getElementById('<%=txtGoodwillMult.ClientID %>'); txtSellingPriceMult = document.getElementById('<%=txtSellingPriceMult.ClientID %>'); txtGoodWill = document.getElementById('<%=txtGoodWill.ClientID %>'); txtBalance = document.getElementById('<%=txtBalance.ClientID %>'); chkTakeBack = document.getElementById('<%=chkTakeBack.ClientID %>'); txtVendorTakeBackPercentage = document.getElementById('<%=txtVendorTakeBackPercentage.ClientID %>'); txtSusEarnPercentage = document.getElementById('<%=txtSusEarnPercentage.ClientID %>'); txtBalanceMultPercentage = document.getElementById('<%=txtBalanceMultPercentage.ClientID %>'); txtGoodwillMultPercentage = document.getElementById('<%=txtGoodwillMultPercentage.ClientID %>'); txtSellingPriceMultPercentage = document.getElementById('<%=txtSellingPriceMultPercentage.ClientID %>'); var regexp = /[$,]/g; //Empty value checks SellingPrice = (SellingPrice == "" ?   • Android draw using SurfaceView and Thread

    - by Morten Høgseth
    I am trying to draw a ball to my screen using 3 classes. I have read a little about this and I found a code snippet that works using the 3 classes on one page, Playing with graphics in Android I altered the code so that I have a ball that is moving and shifts direction when hitting the wall like the picture below (this is using the code in the link). Now I like to separate the classes into 3 different pages for not making everything so crowded, everything is set up the same way. Here are the 3 classes I have. BallActivity.java Ball.java BallThread.java package com.brick.breaker; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.Window; import android.view.WindowManager; public class BallActivity extends Activity { private Ball ball; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN,WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN); ball = new Ball(this); setContentView(ball); } @Override protected void onPause() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub super.onPause(); setContentView(null); ball = null; finish(); } } package com.brick.breaker; import android.content.Context; import android.graphics.Bitmap; import android.graphics.BitmapFactory; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.view.SurfaceHolder; import android.view.SurfaceView; public class Ball extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback { private BallThread ballThread = null; private Bitmap bitmap; private float x, y; private float vx, vy; public Ball(Context context) { super(context); // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub bitmap = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.ball); x = 50.0f; y = 50.0f; vx = 10.0f; vy = 10.0f; getHolder().addCallback(this); ballThread = new BallThread(getHolder(), this); } protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { update(canvas); canvas.drawBitmap(bitmap, x, y, null); } public void update(Canvas canvas) { checkCollisions(canvas); x += vx; y += vy; } public void checkCollisions(Canvas canvas) { if(x - vx < 0) { vx = Math.abs(vx); } else if(x + vx > canvas.getWidth() - getBitmapWidth()) { vx = -Math.abs(vx); } if(y - vy < 0) { vy = Math.abs(vy); } else if(y + vy > canvas.getHeight() - getBitmapHeight()) { vy = -Math.abs(vy); } } public int getBitmapWidth() { if(bitmap != null) { return bitmap.getWidth(); } else { return 0; } } public int getBitmapHeight() { if(bitmap != null) { return bitmap.getHeight(); } else { return 0; } } public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int width, int height) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub } public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub ballThread.setRunnable(true); ballThread.start(); } public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub boolean retry = true; ballThread.setRunnable(false); while(retry) { try { ballThread.join(); retry = false; } catch(InterruptedException ie) { //Try again and again and again } break; } ballThread = null; } } package com.brick.breaker; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.view.SurfaceHolder; public class BallThread extends Thread { private SurfaceHolder sh; private Ball ball; private Canvas canvas; private boolean run = false; public BallThread(SurfaceHolder _holder,Ball _ball) { sh = _holder; ball = _ball; } public void setRunnable(boolean _run) { run = _run; } public void run() { while(run) { canvas = null; try { canvas = sh.lockCanvas(null); synchronized(sh) { ball.onDraw(canvas); } } finally { if(canvas != null) { sh.unlockCanvasAndPost(canvas); } } } } public Canvas getCanvas() { if(canvas != null) { return canvas; } else { return null; } } } Here is a picture that shows the outcome of these classes. I've tried to figure this out but since I am pretty new to Android development I thought I could ask for help. Does any one know what is causing the ball to be draw like that? The code is pretty much the same as the one in the link and I have tried to experiment to find a solution but no luck. Thx in advance for any help=)

  • Duplex communication using NetTcpBinding - ContractFilter mismatch?

    - by Shaul
    I'm making slow and steady progress towards having a duplex communication channel open between a client and a server, using NetTcpBinding. (FYI, you can observe my newbie progress here and here!) I'm now at the stage where I have successfully connected to my server, through the server's firewall, and the client can make requests of the server. In the other direction, however, things aren't quite so happy. It works fine when testing on my own machine, but when testing over the internet, when I try to initiate a callback from the server side, I get an error: The message with Action 'http://MyWebService/IWebService/HelloWorld' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to a ContractFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. This may be because of either a contract mismatch (mismatched Actions between sender and receiver) or a binding/security mismatch between the sender and the receiver. Check that sender and receiver have the same contract and the same binding (including security requirements, e.g. Message, Transport, None). Here are some of the key bits of code. First, the web interface: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://MyWebService", SessionMode = SessionMode.Required, CallbackContract = typeof(ISiteServiceExternal))] public interface IWebService { [OperationContract] void Register(long customerID); } public interface ISiteServiceExternal { [OperationContract] string HelloWorld(); } Then, on the client side (I was fiddling with these attributes without really knowing what I'm doing): [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession, Namespace="http://MyWebService")] class SiteServer : IWebServiceCallback { string IWebServiceCallback.HelloWorld() { return "Hello World!"; } ... } So what am I doing wrong here? EDIT: Adding app.config code. From server: <system.serviceModel> <diagnostics> <messageLogging logMalformedMessages="true" logMessagesAtServiceLevel="true" logMessagesAtTransportLevel="true" logEntireMessage="true" maxMessagesToLog="1000" maxSizeOfMessageToLog="524288" /> </diagnostics> <behaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="mex"> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/> <serviceMetadata/> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> <services> <service name ="MyWebService.WebService" behaviorConfiguration="mex"> <endpoint address="net.tcp://localhost:8000" binding="netTcpBinding" contract="MyWebService.IWebService" bindingConfiguration="TestBinding" name="MyEndPoint"></endpoint> <endpoint address ="mex" binding="mexTcpBinding" name="MEX" contract="IMetadataExchange"/> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="net.tcp://localhost:8000"/> </baseAddresses> </host> </service> </services> <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="TestBinding" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536" portSharingEnabled="false"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength ="8192" maxArrayLength ="16384" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="16384"/> <security mode="None"/> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> </system.serviceModel> and on the client side: <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="MyEndPoint" closeTimeout="00:01:00" openTimeout="00:01:00" receiveTimeout="00:10:00" sendTimeout="00:01:00" transactionFlow="false" transferMode="Buffered" transactionProtocol="OleTransactions" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" listenBacklog="10" maxBufferPoolSize="524288" maxBufferSize="65536" maxConnections="10" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="32" maxStringContentLength="8192" maxArrayLength="16384" maxBytesPerRead="4096" maxNameTableCharCount="16384" /> <reliableSession ordered="true" inactivityTimeout="00:10:00" enabled="false" /> <security mode="None"> <transport clientCredentialType="Windows" protectionLevel="EncryptAndSign"> <extendedProtectionPolicy policyEnforcement="Never" /> </transport> <message clientCredentialType="Windows" /> </security> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> <client> <endpoint address="net.tcp://mydomain.gotdns.com:8000/" binding="netTcpBinding" bindingConfiguration="MyEndPoint" contract="IWebService" name="MyEndPoint" /> </client> </system.serviceModel>

  • jqGrid concatinating/building html tag incorrectly

    - by Energetic Pixels
    Please excuse to length of post. But I needed to explain what I am seeing. I have a onSelectRow option that is supposed to build stacked html <li> tags (such as <li>...</li> <li>...</li> <li>...</li> ) up to the number of static xml elements that I am looking at. But my script is concatinating all the image src links together instead of building the whole listobject tag. Everything else in my jqGrid script works with exception of repeated elements inside my xml. onSelectRow: function() { var gsr = $('#searchResults').jqGrid('getGridParam', 'selrow'); if (gsr) { var data = $('#searchResults').jqGrid('getRowData', gsr); $('#thumbs ul').html('<li><a class='thumb' href='' + data.piclocation + '' title='' + data.pictitle + ''><img src='" + data.picthumb + "' alt='" + data.pictitle + "' /></a><div class='caption'><div class='image-title'>" + data.pictitle + "</div></div></li>"); };" my xml file is something like this: <photo> <pic> <asset>weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106.jpg</asset> <thumb>weaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106.jpg</thumb> <caption>Side view of DODIC A106</caption> <title>Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge</title> </pic> <pic> <asset>weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_A.jpg</asset> <thumb>weaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_A.jpg</thumb> <caption>Side view of DODIC A106</caption> <title>Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge</title> </pic> <pic> <asset>weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_B.jpg</asset> <thumb>weaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_B.jpg</thumb> <caption>Side view of DODIC A106</caption> <title>Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge</title> </pic> <pic> <asset>weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_C.jpg</asset> <thumb>weaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_C.jpg</thumb> <caption>Side view of DODIC A106</caption> <title>Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge</title> </pic> <pic> <asset>weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_D.jpg</asset> <thumb>weaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_D.jpg</thumb> <caption>Side view of DODIC A106</caption> <title>Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge</title> </pic> My script works fine when it only sees one sequence, but when it sees more than one it puts all html inside the tags together then for the caption and title does the same for them. It generates only one <li></li> tag set instead of 5 in the example above like I want. The <li> tags are being used by a slideshow (with thumbnails) utility. Inside firebug, I can see the object that it is built for me: <a title="Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge" href="weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_A.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_B.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_C.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_D.jpg" class="thumb"><img alt="Side view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridgeSide view of 22 caliber long rifle ball cartridge" src="weaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_A.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_B.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_C.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/thumbs/A106_D.jpg"></a> Within jqGrid, the cell is holding: <td title="weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_A.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_B.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_C.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_D.jpg" style="text-align: center; display: none;" role="gridcell">weaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_A.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_B.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_C.jpgweaponLib/stillMedia/slides/A106_D.jpg</td> I know that jqGrid is building it wrong. I am double-stumped as to direction to fix it. Any suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated. tony

  • XSLT Transforming sequential XML to hierarchical XML

    - by Jean-Paul Smit
    I have a requirement to transform a sequential XML node list into a hierarchical, but I run into some XSLT specific knowledge gap. The input XML contains articles, colors and sizes. In the sample below 'Record1' is an article, 'Record2' represents a color and 'Record3' are the sizes. The number of colors and sizes (record2 and record3) elements can vary. <root> <Record1>...</Record1> <Record2>...</Record2> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record2>...</Record2> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record1>...</Record1> <Record2>...</Record2> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record2>...</Record2> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> <Record3>...</Record3> </root> All fields are on the same hierarchical level, but still I have to create this structure as output: <root> <article> -> Record1 <color> -> Record2 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 </color> <color> -> Record2 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 </color> </article> <article> -> Record1 <color> -> Record2 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 </color> <color> -> Record2 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 <size>...</size> -> Record3 </color> </article> </root> I've tried to iterate the nodes sequentially but for example the 'article' (=record1) node tag needs to remain unclosed while 'color' (=record2) nodes are processed. The same counts for processing 'size' (=record3) having 'color' unclosed, but that is not allowed by XSLT. My next idea was to call a template for every article, color and size level, but I don't know how to select for example all 'record3' nodes between the current 'record2' and the next article represented by 'record1'. I've also got a limitation on the XSLT version because I need this transformation in BizTalk Server which only supports XSLT 1.0 Can someone push me in the right direction?

  • HLSL/XNA Ambient light texture mixed up with multi pass lighting

    - by Manu-EPITA
    I've been having some troubles lately with lighting. I have found a source on google which is working pretty good on the example. However, when I try to implement it to my current project, I am getting some very weird bugs. The main one is that my textures are "mixed up" when I only activate the ambient light, which means that a model gets the texture of another one . I am using the same effect for every meshes of my models. I guess this could be the problem, but I don't really know how to "reset" an effect for a new model. Is it possible? Here is my shader: float4x4 WVP; float4x4 WVP; float3x3 World; float3 Ke; float3 Ka; float3 Kd; float3 Ks; float specularPower; float3 globalAmbient; float3 lightColor; float3 eyePosition; float3 lightDirection; float3 lightPosition; float spotPower; texture2D Texture; sampler2D texSampler = sampler_state { Texture = <Texture>; MinFilter = anisotropic; MagFilter = anisotropic; MipFilter = linear; MaxAnisotropy = 16; }; struct VertexShaderInput { float4 Position : POSITION0; float2 Texture : TEXCOORD0; float3 Normal : NORMAL0; }; struct VertexShaderOutput { float4 Position : POSITION0; float2 Texture : TEXCOORD0; float3 PositionO: TEXCOORD1; float3 Normal : NORMAL0; }; VertexShaderOutput VertexShaderFunction(VertexShaderInput input) { VertexShaderOutput output; output.Position = mul(input.Position, WVP); output.Normal = input.Normal; output.PositionO = input.Position.xyz; output.Texture = input.Texture; return output; } float4 PSAmbient(VertexShaderOutput input) : COLOR0 { return float4(Ka*globalAmbient + Ke,1) * tex2D(texSampler,input.Texture); } float4 PSDirectionalLight(VertexShaderOutput input) : COLOR0 { //Difuze float3 L = normalize(-lightDirection); float diffuseLight = max(dot(input.Normal,L), 0); float3 diffuse = Kd*lightColor*diffuseLight; //Specular float3 V = normalize(eyePosition - input.PositionO); float3 H = normalize(L + V); float specularLight = pow(max(dot(input.Normal,H),0),specularPower); if(diffuseLight<=0) specularLight=0; float3 specular = Ks * lightColor * specularLight; //sum all light components float3 light = diffuse + specular; return float4(light,1) * tex2D(texSampler,input.Texture); } technique MultiPassLight { pass Ambient { VertexShader = compile vs_3_0 VertexShaderFunction(); PixelShader = compile ps_3_0 PSAmbient(); } pass Directional { PixelShader = compile ps_3_0 PSDirectionalLight(); } } And here is how I actually apply my effects: public void ApplyLights(ModelMesh mesh, Matrix world, Texture2D modelTexture, Camera camera, Effect effect, GraphicsDevice graphicsDevice) { graphicsDevice.BlendState = BlendState.Opaque; effect.CurrentTechnique.Passes["Ambient"].Apply(); foreach (ModelMeshPart part in mesh.MeshParts) { graphicsDevice.SetVertexBuffer(part.VertexBuffer); graphicsDevice.Indices = part.IndexBuffer; // Texturing graphicsDevice.BlendState = BlendState.AlphaBlend; if (modelTexture != null) { effect.Parameters["Texture"].SetValue( modelTexture ); } graphicsDevice.DrawIndexedPrimitives( PrimitiveType.TriangleList, part.VertexOffset, 0, part.NumVertices, part.StartIndex, part.PrimitiveCount ); // Applying our shader to all the mesh parts effect.Parameters["WVP"].SetValue( world * camera.View * camera.Projection ); effect.Parameters["World"].SetValue(world); effect.Parameters["eyePosition"].SetValue( camera.Position ); graphicsDevice.BlendState = BlendState.Additive; // Drawing lights foreach (DirectionalLight light in DirectionalLights) { effect.Parameters["lightColor"].SetValue(light.Color.ToVector3()); effect.Parameters["lightDirection"].SetValue(light.Direction); // Applying changes and drawing them effect.CurrentTechnique.Passes["Directional"].Apply(); graphicsDevice.DrawIndexedPrimitives( PrimitiveType.TriangleList, part.VertexOffset, 0, part.NumVertices, part.StartIndex, part.PrimitiveCount ); } } I am also applying this when loading the effect: effect.Parameters["lightColor"].SetValue(Color.White.ToVector3()); effect.Parameters["globalAmbient"].SetValue(Color.White.ToVector3()); effect.Parameters["Ke"].SetValue(0.0f); effect.Parameters["Ka"].SetValue(0.01f); effect.Parameters["Kd"].SetValue(1.0f); effect.Parameters["Ks"].SetValue(0.3f); effect.Parameters["specularPower"].SetValue(100); Thank you very much UPDATE: I tried to load an effect for each model when drawing, but it doesn't seem to have changed anything. I suppose it is because XNA detects that the effect has already been loaded before and doesn't want to load a new one. Any idea why?

  • modalpopupextender.Show() wont fire

    - by Peter Lea
    I'm pretty new to developing for the web so bare with me. I have a company page with multiple locations and emails etc at each of these addresses. The idea is to have a single modalpopup to edit each type of data (one for email, one for urls, one for addresses etc). I link the modalpopupextender to a hiddenbutton and then call an edit function from various places where I can populate some hiddenfields and textboxes in the panel before showing it. The code executes but it just wont show the damn popup, I just see a flash and can't figure out if its my panel, my css or something I don't understand about ajax and postbacks etc. Things i've tried after reading various threads: Disable smart navigation in web.config Move ToolKitScriptManager up to master page and use proxy in content set hiddenbutton to use style="display:none" tried links etc instead of hidden button Heres my code CSS .modalBackground { position: absolute; z-index: 100; top: 0px; left: 0px; background-color: #000; filter: alpha(opacity=60); -moz-opacity: 0.6; opacity: 0.6; } .modalPopup { background-color: #FFD; border-width: 3px; border-style: solid; border-color: gray; padding: 3px;} Asp/html <ajaxToolkit:ModalPopupExtender runat="server" ID="mpe_email" BackgroundCssClass="modalBackground" PopupControlID="modal_email" CancelControlID="btn_cancel_email" TargetControlID="fake_btn_email" /> <asp:Button ID="fake_btn_email" runat="server" Text="email" style="display:none;" /> <asp:panel id="modal_email" runat="server" class="modalPopup" Width="500px" Height="500px"> <asp:HiddenField ID="hf_modal_email_location_id" runat="server" Value="" /> <asp:HiddenField ID="hf_modal_email_contact_id" runat="server" Value="" /> <asp:HiddenField ID="hf_modal_email_comms_id" runat="server" Value="" /> <table width="100%"> <tr> <td> <asp:Label ID="lbl_mpe_email_title" runat="server" Text="Edit Email Address" /> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <table width="100%"> <tr> <td width="40px"><img src="../images/email.png" height="30px" width="30px"/></td> <td> <table width="100px"> <tr> <td><span>Quick Ref: <asp:TextBox ID="txb_mpe_email_qref" runat="server" Text="" /></span></td> </tr> <tr> <td><span>Email Address: <asp:TextBox ID="txb_mpe_email_address_full" runat="server" Text="" /></span></td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="40px" align="left"><asp:Button ID="btn_cancel_email" runat="server" Text="Cancel"/></td> <td align="right"><asp:Button ID="btn_save_email" runat="server" Text="Save" OnCommand="save_modal_email" /></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2" align="right"><asp:Label ID="lbl_mpe_email_err" runat="server" Text="" /></td> </tr> </table> c# public void oloc_ocon_email_edit(object sender, RepeaterCommandEventArgs e) { switch (e.CommandName) { case "edit": hf_modal_email_location_id.Value = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_location_id")).Value; hf_modal_email_contact_id.Value = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_contact_id")).Value; hf_modal_email_comms_id.Value = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_comms_id")).Value; lbl_mpe_email_title.Text = "Edit Email Address"; txb_mpe_email_qref.Text = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_qref")).Value; txb_mpe_email_address_full.Text = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_email_full")).Value; lbl_mpe_email_err.Text = ""; mpe_email.Show(); break; case "new": hf_modal_email_location_id.Value = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_location_id_p")).Value; hf_modal_email_contact_id.Value = ((HiddenField)e.Item.FindControl("hf_oloc_ocon_emails_contact_id_p")).Value; hf_modal_email_comms_id.Value = "0"; lbl_mpe_email_title.Text = "New Email Address"; txb_mpe_email_qref.Text = ""; txb_mpe_email_address_full.Text = ""; lbl_mpe_email_err.Text = ""; mpe_email.Show(); break; } } Stuff makes so much more sense in a desktop environment, I hope someone can point me in the right direction.   • How would you go about tackling this problem? [SOLVED in C++]

    - by incrediman
    Intro: EDIT: See solution at the bottom of this question (c++) I have a programming contest coming up in about half a week, and I've been prepping :) I found a bunch of questions from this canadian competition, they're great practice: http://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/contests/computing/2009/stage2/day1.pdf I'm looking at problem B ("Dinner"). Any idea where to start? I can't really think of anything besides the naive approach (ie. trying all permutations) which would take too long to be a valid answer. Btw, the language there says c++ and pascal I think, but i don't care what language you use - I mean really all I want is a hint as to the direction I should proceed in, and perhpas a short explanation to go along with it. It feels like I'm missing something obvious... Of course extended speculation is more than welcome, but I just wanted to clarify that I'm not looking for a full solution here :) Short version of the question: You have a binary string N of length 1-100 (in the question they use H's and G's instead of one's and 0's). You must remove all of the digits from it, in the least number of steps possible. In each step you may remove any number of adjacent digits so long as they are the same. That is, in each step you can remove any number of adjacent G's, or any number of adjacent H's, but you can't remove H's and G's in one step. Example: HHHGHHGHH Solution to the example: 1. HHGGHH (remove middle Hs) 2. HHHH (remove middle Gs) 3. Done (remove Hs) -->Would return '3' as the answer. Note that there can also be a limit placed on how large adjacent groups have to be when you remove them. For example it might say '2', and then you can't remove single digits (you'd have to remove pairs or larger groups at a time). Solution I took Mark Harrison's main algorithm, and Paradigm's grouping idea and used them to create the solution below. You can try it out on the official test cases if you want. //B.cpp //include debug messages? #define DEBUG false #include <iostream> #include <stdio.h> #include <vector> using namespace std; #define FOR(i,n) for (int i=0;i<n;i++) #define FROM(i,s,n) for (int i=s;i<n;i++) #define H 'H' #define G 'G' class String{ public: int num; char type; String(){ type=H; num=0; } String(char type){ this->type=type; num=1; } }; //n is the number of bits originally in the line //k is the minimum number of people you can remove at a time //moves is the counter used to determine how many moves we've made so far int n, k, moves; int main(){ /*Input from File*/ scanf("%d %d",&n,&k); char * buffer = new char[200]; scanf("%s",buffer); /*Process input into a vector*/ //the 'line' is a vector of 'String's (essentially contigious groups of identical 'bits') vector<String> line; line.push_back(String()); FOR(i,n){ //if the last String is of the correct type, simply increment its count if (line.back().type==buffer[i]) line.back().num++; //if the last String is of the wrong type but has a 0 count, correct its type and set its count to 1 else if (line.back().num==0){ line.back().type=buffer[i]; line.back().num=1; } //otherwise this is the beginning of a new group, so create the new group at the back with the correct type, and a count of 1 else{ line.push_back(String(buffer[i])); } } /*Geedily remove groups until there are at most two groups left*/ moves=0; int I;//the position of the best group to remove int bestNum;//the size of the newly connected group the removal of group I will create while (line.size()>2){ /*START DEBUG*/ if (DEBUG){ cout<<"\n"<<moves<<"\n----\n"; FOR(i,line.size()) printf("%d %c \n",line[i].num,line[i].type); cout<<"----\n"; } /*END DEBUG*/ I=1; bestNum=-1; FROM(i,1,line.size()-1){ if (line[i-1].num+line[i+1].num>bestNum && line[i].num>=k){ bestNum=line[i-1].num+line[i+1].num; I=i; } } //remove the chosen group, thus merging the two adjacent groups line[I-1].num+=line[I+1].num; line.erase(line.begin()+I);line.erase(line.begin()+I); moves++; } /*START DEBUG*/ if (DEBUG){ cout<<"\n"<<moves<<"\n----\n"; FOR(i,line.size()) printf("%d %c \n",line[i].num,line[i].type); cout<<"----\n"; cout<<"\n\nFinal Answer: "; } /*END DEBUG*/ /*Attempt the removal of the last two groups, and output the final result*/ if (line.size()==2 && line[0].num>=k && line[1].num>=k) cout<<moves+2;//success else if (line.size()==1 && line[0].num>=k) cout<<moves+1;//success else cout<<-1;//not everyone could dine. /*START DEBUG*/ if (DEBUG){ cout<<" moves."; } /*END DEBUG*/ }

  • Problem in generation of custom classes at web service client

    - by user443324
    I have a web service which receives an custom object and returns another custom object. It can be deployed successfully on GlassFish or JBoss. @WebMethod(operationName = "providerRQ") @WebResult(name = "BookingInfoResponse" , targetNamespace = "http://tlonewayresprovidrs.jaxbutil.rakes.nhst.com/") public com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrs.BookingInfoResponse providerRQ(@WebParam(name = "BookingInfoRequest" , targetNamespace = "http://tlonewayresprovidrq.jaxbutil.rakes.nhst.com/") com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrq.BookingInfoRequest BookingInfoRequest) { com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrs.BookingInfoResponse BookingInfoResponse = new com.nhst.rakes.jaxbutil.tlonewayresprovidrs.BookingInfoResponse(); return BookingInfoResponse; } But when I create a client for this web service, two instances of BookingInfoRequest and BookingInfoResponse generated even I need only one instance. This time an error is returned that says multiple classes with same name are can not be possible....... Here is wsdl..... <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?><!-- Published by JAX-WS RI at http://jax-ws.dev.java.net. Please help me to move in right direction.

  • Improving HTML scrapper efficiency with pcntl_fork()

    - by Michael Pasqualone
    With the help from two previous questions, I now have a working HTML scrapper that feeds product information into a database. What I am now trying to do is improve efficiently by wrapping my brain around with getting my scrapper working with pcntl_fork. If I split my php5-cli script into 10 separate chunks, I improve total runtime by a large factor so I know I am not i/o or cpu bound but just limited by the linear nature of my scraping functions. Using code I've cobbled together from multiple sources, I have this working test: <?php libxml_use_internal_errors(true); ini_set('max_execution_time', 0); ini_set('max_input_time', 0); set_time_limit(0); $hrefArray = array("http://slashdot.org", "http://slashdot.org", "http://slashdot.org", "http://slashdot.org"); function doDomStuff($singleHref,$childPid) { $html = new DOMDocument(); $html->loadHtmlFile($singleHref); $xPath = new DOMXPath($html); $domQuery = '//div[@id="slogan"]/h2'; $domReturn = $xPath->query($domQuery); foreach($domReturn as $return) { $slogan = $return->nodeValue; echo "Child PID #" . $childPid . " says: " . $slogan . "\n"; } } $pids = array(); foreach ($hrefArray as $singleHref) { $pid = pcntl_fork(); if ($pid == -1) { die("Couldn't fork, error!"); } elseif ($pid > 0) { // We are the parent $pids[] = $pid; } else { // We are the child $childPid = posix_getpid(); doDomStuff($singleHref,$childPid); exit(0); } } foreach ($pids as $pid) { pcntl_waitpid($pid, $status); } // Clear the libxml buffer so it doesn't fill up libxml_clear_errors(); Which raises the following questions: 1) Given my hrefArray contains 4 urls - if the array was to contain say 1,000 product urls this code would spawn 1,000 child processes? If so, what is the best way to limit the amount of processes to say 10, and again 1,000 urls as an example split the child work load to 100 products per child (10 x 100). 2) I've learn that pcntl_fork creates a copy of the process and all variables, classes, etc. What I would like to do is replace my hrefArray variable with a DOMDocument query that builds the list of products to scrape, and then feeds them off to child processes to do the processing - so spreading the load across 10 child workers. My brain is telling I need to do something like the following (obviously this doesn't work, so don't run it): <?php libxml_use_internal_errors(true); ini_set('max_execution_time', 0); ini_set('max_input_time', 0); set_time_limit(0); $maxChildWorkers = 10; $html = new DOMDocument(); $html->loadHtmlFile('http://xxxx'); $xPath = new DOMXPath($html); $domQuery = '//div[@id=productDetail]/a'; $domReturn = $xPath->query($domQuery); $hrefsArray[] = $domReturn->getAttribute('href'); function doDomStuff($singleHref) { // Do stuff here with each product } // To figure out: Split href array into $maxChilderWorks # of workArray1, workArray2 ... workArray10. $pids = array(); foreach ($workArray(1,2,3 ... 10) as $singleHref) { $pid = pcntl_fork(); if ($pid == -1) { die("Couldn't fork, error!"); } elseif ($pid > 0) { // We are the parent $pids[] = $pid; } else { // We are the child $childPid = posix_getpid(); doDomStuff($singleHref); exit(0); } } foreach ($pids as $pid) { pcntl_waitpid($pid, $status); } // Clear the libxml buffer so it doesn't fill up libxml_clear_errors(); But what I can't figure out is how to build my hrefsArray[] in the master/parent process only and feed it off to the child process. Currently everything I've tried causes loops in the child processes. I.e. my hrefsArray gets built in the master, and in each subsequent child process. I am sure I am going about this all totally wrong, so would greatly appreciate just general nudge in the right direction.
