• silverlight 3 navigation page not availble in VS as item to add

  I've recently upgraded my computer from Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I've re-installed VS 2008 web express, and re-installed all the silver light sdk's, tools, etc. But now when I want to add a Silverlight Navigation Page, it is not avialble to me in the list of items that can be added. The navigation dll is installed, as my project existed before the OS upgrade. The program still runs just fine as is, but I want to add another navigation page item to the project, and I'm stumped for how to do it. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• How do I free SQLServerCE's COM instance from the current running process?

  It's been a while since I touched COM so be nice ;) This is under WindowsCE 5.0 with SQLServerCE 2.0. After calling this to load SQLServerCE 2.0 : - IDBInitialize *pIDBInitialize = NULL; CoCreateInstance(CLSID_SQLSERVERCE_2_0, NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, IID_IDBInitialize, (void**)&pIDBInitialize); Module load occurs for SSCE20.dll which obviously loads the SQLServerCE engine into the process space. What I don't understand is if I do this immediately after :- pIDBInitialize->Release(); I don't see a dll module unload, so that SSCE20.dll (and friends) are still loaded into my process. Now I tried CoFreeUnusedLibraries() which I figure forces COM to purge any unused libraries, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. At runtime I want to be able to completely unload the SQLServerCE 2.0 dll from the process to streamline an upgrade to 3.5SP1. I suspect this has something to do with the shared dll model that Microsoft use under WindowsCE... but, I might be wrong :) Thanks in advance, David.

  Here is the context. I want to have a free version and a premium version of the same application. When people buy the application, I want them to be able to "upgrade" without losing their data, i.e. the premium version should install over the free version. I want to use the same code base and just switch a setting to build the premium version. Andoid Market does not let me convert a free app to a paid app, so the trivial option is not available. I am curious if someone has tried this successfully. How does Android Market identify an application - will it think that the premium version is a different app and just install it in parallel?

• Streaming Media Server and Hosting

  My partner and I have a webcam site that basically runs the old-school method....Every 0.5 seconds the javascript reloads the image in the browser from the webcam. However we are wanting to upgrade to a streaming media server to get higher quality video, and possibly audio. We aren't tied to any one specific file format or server type, as of right now we are leaning towards slicehost (as scalability is important), and installing darwin streaming server or wowza. This is meant to be a live stream. Does anyone have any suggestions for hosts/server software?

• I need git-svn to act as a Subversion v1.5+ client

  I'm running git 1.7 on Mac OSX, installed via Homebrew. I'm trying to use git svn to work with a Subversion server that requires Subversion 1.5 clients (a restriction enforced via a pre-commit hook.) Running git svn --version reveals that as far as git is concerned, git svn is equivalent to svn v1.4.4. I can't establish whether git svn is a total clone of subversion, and thus needs to be updated to meet subversion v1.5 functionality, or if git is compiled against or just points to some version of subversion under the hood. I've struggled finding anyone else trying to upgrade the version of git-svn, and I'm guessing this client version restriction is unusual, but I'm stuck with it (corporate environment.) Is it possible to have git operate as svn 1.5?

• Getting IIS6 to play nice with WordPress Pretty Permalinks

  I've got a WordPress powered blog that I'm trying to get setup on our IIS6 server and everything works besides the permalink structure which I'm having a big headache with. After googling around/wordpress codex I learned that it's because IIS6 doesn't have the equivalent of Apache's mod_rewrite which is required for this feature to work. So that's where I'm at now. I can't seem to find a functional solution to get the pretty permalinks to work without the "index.php/," anyone have any recommendations? What I can't do: Upgrade to IIS7 Switch to Apache Quit my job Those suggestions have been offered to me, which sadly, I can't do any of those. Just an, FYI. Much thanks for anyone who can lead me in the right direction.

  Hi, I've been trying to find this info in JBoss docs/forums/WIKIs - but could not get a concise answer to this question: Which web services stacks are supported (or you can make work on) in JBoss 5? I have a huge legacy app using Axis 1 web services which is running fine on WLS9.2. Now I have to migrate it to JBoss 5 and I have to decide whether I can leave Axis1 web services as is (at least for the time being, to get the app working on JBoss at all), or if I have to upgrade web services to Axis 2 or CXF. So, given the three options, Axis 1, Axis 2 and CXF - what does support for them look like on JBoss 5? Any gotchas, pain points, words of wisdom from experience? :)

  We have oracle running on Solaris, and the shell is by default CSH. So the login script set the oracle_home,oracle_sid in csh also. But I don't like csh and want to use bash to do my work. So how to source the csh login script in bash? e.g, the following is what in the .cshrc file. And when use bash, I'd like use these variables. One way is to copy the variables again and use bash command, such as export ORACLE_SID=TEST. But doing so will let us to maintain two copy of the files. And when we change the database name, or upgrade the database, I need to maintian the bash login file seperately.   Hi, I need some help with vocabulary, I don't use Oracle that often but I am familiar with MySQL and SQL Server. I have an application I need to upgrade and migrate, and part of the procedure to do that involves exporting to an XML file, allowing the installer to create new database tables, then import to the new database tables from the XML file. In Oracle, my database connection specifies a username, password, and an SID. Let's call the SID, "COMPANY-APPS". This SID contains tables belonging to several applications, each of which connects with a different user ( "WIKIUSER", "BUGUSER", "TIMETRACKERUSER" ). My question is: Can I re-use the same user to create the new tables ( with the same names ). In MySQL or SQL Server, I would create a new database and grant my user privileges to create tables in it. OR, do I need to create a new database user for my upgraded tables?

  Hi, I have a 5 year old web application which runs tinymce 2.0.5.1 In this version it is possible - in IE 6,7,8 only to paste from MS Word and retain the tab characters. Because of another problem suspected to be caused by TinyMCE, we'd like to upgrade to the current TinyMCE version 3.2.7 However in this version the resulting paste code does not contain anything that seems to 100% link to a tabulator. If pasted into an empty textarea, I get something like , if pasted into a I simply a space character. Can anyone recommend how to detect tabulators when pasting from MS Word?

  I'm trying to create a custom mapping with AutoMapper, but I can't use 3.0 syntax with lambdas. How would one convert this 3.0 code into 2.0 ? Mapper.CreateMap<MyClass, MyDto>() .ForMember(dest => dest.Name, opt => opt.MapFrom(src => src.CompanyName)) Edit: Since there was no better solution, we are now using vs2008 on one workstation to make these mappings and build a dll.   Just moved to Grails 1.2.1 (used 1.1.1 before). Changed application.properties, ran grails upgrade, fixed BuildConfig and Bootstrap - everything works just fine from grails console. However, getting a problem when deploy packaged war under jetty 6.1.22: 1581 [main] ERROR org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoader - Context initialization failed org.springframework.beans.factory.access.BootstrapException: Error executing bootstraps; nested exception is java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.commons.spring.ReloadAwareAutowireCapableBeanFactory.setParameterNameDiscoverer(Lorg/springframework/core/ParameterNameDiscoverer;)V My project is built with maven2. I researched the war dependencies and see that both spring 2.5.6 and 3.0.0.RELEASE are used there. I then tried to suppress use of spring 2.5.6 and got a problem with Acegi plugin (using version 0.5.1): 2010-03-10 21:06:56.440:WARN::Nested in org.springframework.beans.factory.access.BootstrapException: Error executing bootstraps; nested exception is java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.springframework.web.context.ConfigurableWebApplicationContext.setId(Ljava/lang/String;)V Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Connecting to SQL Server with Visual Studio Express Editions

  I find it odd that in Visual C# 2008 Express edition, when you use the database explorer, your options are: 1) Microsoft Access 2) SQL Server Compact 3.5, and 3) SQL Server Database File. BUT if you use Visual Web Developer 2008 Express, you can connect to a regular SQL Server, Oracle, ODBC, etc. For people developing command-line or other C# apps that need to talk to a SQL Server database, do you really need to build your LINQ/Data Access code with one IDE (Visual Web Developer) and your program in another (Visual C#)? It's not a hard workaround, but it seems weird. If Microsoft wanted to force you to upgrade to Visual Studio to connect to SQL Server, why would they include that feature in one of their free IDEs but not the other? I feel like I might be missing something (like how to do it all in Visual C#). Thanks! Tom

• How do I design the file storage issue?

  I am working on an application that creates video files and stores them in a folder in the C:\ drive. I speculate that there will be a large number of these files in the future and we would run out of disk space at some point of time (on our VPS). When the time comes that we have to upgrade, we either plan to use one of the Cloud providers to store files or our existing provider can add another disk (say D:\ drive). Either way, I would want to design the app now in a way that in future, moving to different locations would not be an issue and would be transparent to the end user. The code that creates these files supports 2 ways: myObj.SetOutputToDisk(<path to store>); or myObj.SetOutputToMemoryStream(ms); If we go with the Cloud architecture, I assume we might have the following combination: Cloud Files + Existing VPS or Cloud Files + Cloud Windows Server Given the unknowns at this time, how would I go about designing this?

What I would like to know is the following: I have taken exam 70-526 a couple of years ago and I still have the training kit laying around. Now my boss wants me to prepare for the upgrade exam 70-505. Do you know if both exams are similar or otherwise put: do you think I have to get the new training kit to prepare for this exam or will the old one do?   Are there any wrappers to any of the other PDF generating packages for PHP that provide API compatibility with PDFlib? Our company has been generating PDFs from PHP using PDFlib for many years, but have not upgraded since version 5. Now that we are upgrading some servers, we need either upgrade or find a replacement. I'd like to replace PDFlib with an open-source product that allows commercial use. However, we (foolishly, perhaps) didn't write our own wrapper around PDFlib the first time around, and have many, many lines of code that would need to be changed and tested. I realize I could write my own wrapper, but I find it surprising that my searching thus far has yielded no-one else who has done the same.

• Cannot change the target CPU to x86 Or x64 in Visual Studio 2005

  I am trying to build a website application and specify the target CPU as x86 instead of Any CPU. The only choices I have in Configuration Manager under the "Active solution platform:" drop-down list are: "Any CPU", "Edit..", and "New...". In the "Project Contexts" portion of the "Configuration Manager" window, it lists 3 columns: "Project", "Configuration" and "Platform". Under the "Platform" column, my only choice is ".Net". when the "Active solution configuration" is set to, "Debug". When the, ""Active solution configuration" is set to "Release", then I can choose either, ".Net" or "Any CPU" under the "Platform" column. I am using Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition. This website was previously built using Visual Studio .NET and was recently upgraded using the Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition Upgrade Wizard. I need to target x86 specifically because the are components used in the project that are only x86 compatible.

• Install a file which should be removed only on real uninstall and never overwritten

  When I install my application, along with the binaries, a conf file is installed that the user can change as he needs (it's actually the user data file). I would like this file to not be overwritten or deleted when a repair, upgrade, modify happens and it should be deleted only when a real uninstall happens. In other words: this conf file is installed along with the binaries and should never be touched again (overwritten/deleted) until a real uninstall happens (not repairs, modifies, upgrades) in which case it should be deleted. So I was thinking of doing: <Component Id="aaa.cfg" Guid="GUID"> <File Id="aaa.cfg" Source="aaa.cfg" KeyPath="yes" /> </Component> But I don't know how could I condition the component so that: 1) the component to be removed only on a real uninstall - not upgrades, repairs, modifies? 2) the file should in no case be overwritten if already exists. • FIPS-compliant encryption in .NET 2.0

  We have a .NET 2.0 application that uses the RijindaelManaged class to encrypt some sensitive data. This was fine until we ran into some machines that require the use of FIPS-compliant algorithms. We'd like to switch to AesCryptoServiceProvider, but most of our target machines haven't upgraded past .NET 2.0. Requiring an upgrade is out of the question. After all, upgrades are scary! Is there any way we could use AesCryptoServiceProvider in a .NET 2.0 application? Since 3.5 uses the 2.0 CLR, I was hoping there might be a way to build the needed libraries into the app. Failing that, could someone point me to a reference on the native API that's wrapped by AesCryptoServiceProvider?

• Reinstalling Applications after Win 7 installation [closed]

  I'm preparing to upgrade to Win 7 and am trying to ensure that I will be able to reinstall all the relevant applications. Since most applications require product keys, I'm curious if the installation process for Win 7 preserves those keys in any way (say for Office 2007,...) or do I have to locate and reenter every key? Second, for appications that require a key and then check with their home server (Norton Internet Security, for example). Even if I have the key, how do I convince the server that I'm not trying to reuse an application that has a single use license? Thanks, --Don
