  • One of my VMs went boom using Virtual Box and how it got fixed

    I am running an HP Envy 15, 16GB and 500GB (7200 RPM) Hard drive. Had a VM configured from another environment, created the virtual machine config file on Virtual Box, everything seemed ok. Fired it up, and it was  s   l   o   w, it took close to 10 minutes for it to load, and about 5 more to see Windows was in the process of loading before the BSOD.  Thought, maybe, just maybe it will not happen again … oh was I wrong. Frustration had already hit an all time high with this configuration and the number of issues I’ve had. How I did the troubleshooting … The best thing to do (IMO) is to step back, and gather your tools to debug this situation. Tools:  Virtual Box command line tools, Windows Debug. Virtual Box comes with a pretty good set of tools to examine, migrate and overall tasks to deal with VMs. The firs step:  use VBoxManage to prevent the VM from rebooting after the error to get enough time to really dig into the BSOD issue. Command used:   VBoxManage setextradata VMNAME "VBoxInternal/PDM/HaltOnReset" 1 Once this was done, the error reported was an “Inaccessible boot device” coming from a “Stop – 7B” type of error on the BSOD. The issue I had with this, my VM was configured to use a virtual SATA controller, and thought Windows 2008 R2 would handle this fine … again wrong!  Because the integration tools from the other product where wanting to take effect that was throwing everything off. The fix The fix was almost handed to me, edited the configuration for the VM, removed the SATA controller from it, added the virtual hard drive under an IDE controller, boot up and voilà … it works! I was then able to install the Virtual Box guest tools and such, but have decided to favor “keep on working” over “let’s try SATA again”

  • Directory Synchronization

    We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here.   • Windows Embedded Compact 7 in Padua

    Yesterday I did a presentation about Windows CE at the University of Padua Even if the picture seems to suggest that I just showed and empty slide, I illustrated the new features of the OS and did a quick demo of Silverlight for Windows Embedded on Windows Embedded Compact 7 (I’ve to get used to this new name), showing the new tools that provide a better integration between Expression Blend and Visual Studio for the development of Silverlight applications (I hope to be able to write more on this topic soon!). The Operating System was running on some real hardware (TI OMAP3530 evaluation board) and many people had a chance to interact with the new customizable shell. Most of the 60 people attending were still awake at the end of the one hour and a half session, and some of them even asked questions! I would like to thank all the people attending and all the people of Arrow, Fortech Embedded Labs and the University of Padua that made this event possible and provide me the tool and the time to do this presentation.   • Accessing Master Page Controls

    Sometimes when using Master Pages you need to set a property on a control from the content page. An example might be changing a label’s text to reflect some content (e.g. customer name) being viewed or maybe to change the visibility of a control depending on the rights a user may have in the application. There are different ways to do this but this is the one I like. First on the code behind of the Master Page create the property that needs to be accessed. An example would be: Public Property CustomerNameText() As String     Get         Return lblCustomerName.Text     End Get     Set(ByVal value As String)         lblCustomerName.Text = value     End Set End Property Next in the aspx file of the content page add the MasterType directive like: <%@ MasterType VirtualPath="~/MasterPages/Sales.master" %> Then you can access the property in any of the functions of the code behind of the aspx content page. Hello we have a scenario like changes we have made in application should be reflected, previously we use to send whole package build , inspite of that is there any other way to simply create a patch file that should reflect changes in application. i've googled abt this however many of the forums saying that to use some third party tools.. Is it ok to go for third party tools.. coz our application is stable now.. in field now shouldnt take any risk...     Goal: Enabling HTML5 validation and  IntelliSense for Visual Studio 2010. By default it is set to XHTML 1.1. HTML5 support only came included with SP1 of Visual Studio 2010. However since HTML5 is not an official standard as yet and some of the 30 new elements are not suported in all browsers, so only a subset of the entire HTML5 specification is supported; support for both intellisense and validation for HTML5 with SP1. How to: After installing SP1 you have to tell Visual Studio to start using the HTML5 schema. Go to Tools -> Options, and then select Text Editor -> HTML -> Validation. Select HTML5 or XHTML5 as the target schema. So start building or converting older Visual Studio projects to HTML5 and CSS3 web applications.

    This is something that I rarely need to do, grab a DropDownList’s selected item’s text for use in a datasource’s ControlParameter. To allow for this use SelectedItem.Text instead of the more common SelectedValue for the PropertyName. <asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlStuff" Name="stuffName" Type="String" PropertyName="SelectedItem.Text" /> The reason for using this is for text comparison.   • New Workstation &ndash; Lenovo W530 Core i7 32GB 256GB SSD Win8Pro

    So I pretty-much have my new machine up and running full-time. I am still going to have to hit my old workstation for some things but am more-or-less working on my new machine.  It’s really fast. And Bret was right, I’m not so far using all the RAM. 16 would have been enough but as @CodeMonkeyJava “go big or go home”. Windows 8 is…interesting.  So far I still seem to do most of my work in the “Desktop”.  However, I like the Store concept and I like the Metro UX.  Live tiles are also nice.  I really like how I can switch between Desktop and Metro easily.  Overall I think Microsoft has done a great job of combining the needed experience for touch and mouse. My overall Windows 8 rating is 5.9 because of the video card. Otherwise I’m hitting 7.8.  The system boots from cold in about 11 seconds and performs complete shutdown in 4.7 seconds.  It wakes from sleep in less than 1 second. VS 2012 starts and restarts almost instantly.  In fact, I find myself staring at the start page without realizing it.  Build time doesn’t seem to be significantly increased but it is faster. I seem to already be reinvigorated for work with this new machine. I’m looking forward to the performance.

  • Javascript Inheritance Part 2

    A while back I wrote about Javascript inheritance, trying to figure out the best and easiest way to do it (http://geekswithblogs.net/PhubarBaz/archive/2010/07/08/javascript-inheritance.aspx). That was 2 years ago and I've learned a lot since then. But only recently have I decided to just leave classical inheritance behind and embrace prototypal inheritance. For most of us, we were trained in classical inheritance, using class hierarchies in a typed language. Unfortunately Javascript doesn't follow that model. It is both classless and typeless, which is hard to fathom for someone who's been using classes the last 20 years. For the last two or three years since I've got into Javascript I've been trying to find the best way to force it into the class model without much success. It's clunky and verbose and hard to understand. I think my biggest problem was that it felt so wrong to add or change object members at run time. Every time I did it I felt like I needed a shower. That's the 20 years of classical inheritance in me. Finally I decided to embrace change and do something different. I decided to use the factory pattern to build objects instead of trying to use inheritance. Javascript was made for the factory pattern because of the way you can construct objects at runtime. In the factory pattern you have a factory function that you call and tell it to give you a certain type of object back. The factory function takes care of constructing the object to your specification. Here's an example. Say we want to have some shape objects and they have common attributes like id and area that we want to depend on in other parts of your application. So first thing to do is create a factory object and give it a factory method to create an abstract shape object. The factory method builds the object then returns it. var shapeFactory = { getShape: function(id){ var shape = { id: id, area: function() { throw "Not implemented"; } }; return shape; }}; Now we can add another factory method to get a rectangle. It calls the getShape() method first and then adds an implementation to it. getRectangle: function(id, width, height){ var rect = this.getShape(id); rect.width = width; rect.height = height; rect.area = function() { return this.width * this.height; }; return rect;} That's pretty simple right? No worrying about hooking up prototypes and calling base constructors or any of that crap I used to do. Now let's create a factory method to get a cuboid (rectangular cube). The cuboid object will extend the rectangle object. To get the area we will call into the base object's area method and then multiply that by the depth. getCuboid: function(id, width, height, depth){ var cuboid = this.getRectangle(id, width, height); cuboid.depth = depth; var baseArea = cuboid.area; cuboid.area = function() { var a = baseArea.call(this); return a * this.depth; } return cuboid;} See how we called the area method in the base object? First we save it off in a variable then we implement our own area method and use call() to call the base function. For me this is a lot cleaner and easier than trying to emulate class hierarchies in Javascript.

    Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items.   • Change AccountName/LoginName for a SharePoint User (SPUser)

    Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command on the Server: STSADM –o migrateuser –oldlogin MYDOMAIN\eholz –newlogin MYDOMAIN\eburrell –ignoresidhistory However to update the Sharepoint 2010 UserProfile, i first tried running a Incremental/Full Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service… this did not work. To enable me to update the AccountName field (which is a read only field) of the UserProfile, I had to first delete the User Profile for MYDOMAIN\eholz and then run a FULL Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service which synchronizes the Sharepoint User Profiles with the AD profiles. Update: if you just run the STSADM –o migrateuser command… the profile also gets updated automatically. so all you need is to run the stsadm –o migrate user command and you dont need to delete and recreate the User Profile

  • Farm is unavailable exception

    I was faced today by an exception saying that "Farm is unavailable" and the call stack which for sure wasn't useful for diagnosing that type of error. My solution to this error was straight forward and below are the steps that I've followed: 1. Open run and type services.msc 2. Search for the SQL server instance and in my case I've found that it's not running, so simply start it :) After that, refresh the page and everything is normal again !

    I wanted to spin an icon to show progress to my user while some content was downloading. I'm using MVVM (aren't you) and made a satisfactory Storyboard to spin the icon. However, it took longer than expected to trigger that animation from my ViewModel's property.I used a combination of the GoToState action and the DataTrigger from the Microsoft.Expression.Interactions dll as described here.Then I had problems getting it to start until I found this approach that saved the day.   • SSRS optional parameters settings

    Recently I had to create couple SQL Server Reports (SSRS) with optional parameters built in. It took me a while to refresh memory how this can be done. It was very simple to create reports and processes behind, but connecting these two were are little bit challenging – stored procedure was tested and worked fine, but when the report was passing optional parameters it didn’t returned expected results. After tweaking SQL stored procedures and reports parameter options, the following approach turn to be the winning one. 1) Defining report parameters: From Menu bar select ‘View’ and ‘Report Data’ Newly open window should have ‘Parameters’ folder display Right click on this folder and select ‘Add new parameter...’                             Default values need to be added from a query                 A query values need to include ‘’ (empty string) – as highlighted                   2) SQL stored procedure should have CASE statements inside WHERE and it was the only way that a report was getting correct results back.

If you edit the unloaded Project you will find something like this   For some Murphys rule reason even after hitting VS2010 with SP 1 my work box has lost MVC3 so thats why {E53F8FEA-EAE0-44A6-8774-FFD645390401} is unknown  This site has a list of the VS system guids i.e C#/VB.NET,Workflow etc www.mztools.com/articles/2008/mz2008017.aspx Goto MVC 3 site www.asp.net/mvc/mvc3 and get latest ver and you should be back on track   Note to self going a bit crazy on the Visual Studio Gallery http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/ and installing maybe one to many tools might have something to do with my problems...lol
