System.Data.Sqlclient.Sqlexception: Line1 incorrect syntax ...

Given a SqlConnection, a SqlCommand if you need to execute a stored procedure it is enough to specify the stored procedure name as the CommandText and it will work. Now the surprise is that if you also add parametres, you get this creepy error: SqlException: Line 1 incorrect syntax near [storedProcedureName]. The quick fix is to specify the CommandType to be StoredProcedure.

During my tenure at the last company, I didn't let my career stagnate as others have and as time moved along.When at work or home, spend 10% of your time learning something new about some aspect or segway of your job so that your skills are marketable in case you lose it. From experience let me reinforce that it pays off. It pays off in your current job because of the education received and the competence increase of your skills which applied will bring recognition.In these days and times, loyalty to a company is truly at an end. However many companies do care about cultivating their employees which creates a brand of loyalty that can't be replaced. Old companies with the Corp. mentality (or because of the corp. mentality) ever decrease their budgets on organizational sections and thereby do a RIF as a matter of business.The mistakes they make during this process can be risky. But who am I, but a lowly ole programmer, to judge risk. If you are laid off, be friendly with your past manager, and based on simple questions and help, give whatever help you can over the phone even though you are under no obligation to do so.It is also quite possible that there are opportunities to make at home with a new company in the future. Just remember that when inquiring about a position, take advantage of the training that is offered, and keep yourself emotionally and educationally fit.Talk soon,foxjazz

Why CoffeeScript is an issue

Other than some obvious concerns, my main concern is support in the open source community. "anon" from the CoffeeScript team sent this to me after I requested input from the team to concerns I raised and wanted to get others' take on it:"Thanks for confirming that only idiots willingly program in Java and C#"or the following from the same person:"Oh and finally, you should definitely create jShort. Even though I know you will fail before you even start, I would love to laugh at your attempts and it would be perfect for you since you ride the short bus. "This kind of comment reflects badly on the CoffeeScript team and hence not an option for us as a company to consider. Another example of why some open-source community projects get no traction.

Error downloading novacom drivers – WebOS

I got sick of the Bing Maps on WebOS not being able to find “coffee” when I’m in St. Paul. Coffe Pk, TX anyone? – no thanks. So I finally got around to installing PreWare on my Palm Pre 2. The WebOS Quick Install doesn’t successfully download the novacom drivers. You can find them here: http://downloads.help.palm.com/opensource/novacom/novacom-win-32.tgz http://downloads.help.palm.com/opensource/novacom/novacom-win-64-tgz Don’t bother trying the Novacom Universal Installer either. Then put phone in developer mode (by Typing webos20090606 and switch on developer mode), attach phone in “Just Charge” mode, run WebOS Quick Install, select the globe icon, and search for PreWare, install.

Windows 8 Location Services

I spent the afternoon with the Geolocator object in the WinRT and Widows 8 platform. I have also been working with doing Windows Phone 7 development, and first had to wrap my head around the fact that while similar, it is not the same as the GeoCoordinateWatcher that environment. I found a nice example here http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Geolocation-2483de66 But the behavior of my app wasn’t the same. Once you ensure that location services is enabled by following these instructions: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh768219.aspx Location Services was still disabled. From everything I read, it sounded like the first time you try to use the Geolocator object, the user would be prompted to allow to “Access to your location”. After nosing around I found the issue. You need to add the location service as a Capability in the Package.appxmanifest file: After checking the box, I was prompted to allow access to location services as expected the first time I needed to use it.

Create Custom Speech Bubbles in Silverlight.

I had a reader email me the following question: “How do you create Speech Bubbles in Silverlight/WPF without adding any extra .dlls? Right off the bat, I know at least two ways to create the speech bubbles that look just like the ones in comic books. Using the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using the free 3rd party control named FreeBubbles (I used this before Blend 4). Unfortunately, we cannot use either of these as they will both add extra .dll’s to the project. So why wouldn’t you want to use one of those? I can think of a few reasons: You do not want to increase the size of your .XAP by including extra .dll’s. You do not have Expression Blend or the license to the use the .dll’s. You want a custom Speech Bubble that is not included in the four “Callout” Controls with Blend. Instead of using one of these methods, we will create a Speech Bubble in Blend 4 using Path element and a TextBlock. Before we get started, lets look at the Callout Shapes included with Blend 4. Using Blend 4 you can simply drag/drop these controls onto your Silverlight application and you are ready to go. We can create all of these Speech Bubbles and even some of the modern bubbles used in recent comic books. Lets get started. Start up Expression Blend 4 and select the Pen Tool. On the Art Board, start connecting the dots like I did below. You can add a color if you wish. …keep going …complete Let’s go ahead and add some text to the Speech Bubble. Drag a TextBlock from the Panel and put it directly inside the Speech Bubble. Go ahead and set the TextAlignment to Center for the TextBlock. and give it some text. At this point, you could go ahead and create a user control if you want to reuse the Speech Bubble you created. Select both the Path and the TextBlock by clicking then while holding down CTRL and then Right Click them. Select Make Into User Control. Give it a name and then Build your project. Lets create another one using the Ellipse for the older comic book style of Speech Bubbles. Drag an Ellipse to the Artboard and give it a color. Now, grab the Pen and drag a triangle like I did below. Simply drag it over a corner of the Ellipse. Select Combine then Unite and you will have a Path. At this point, you can go ahead and add a TextBlock like we did earlier. Lets go ahead and create a rounded rectangle one by adding a Rectangle to the Artboard. Go ahead and set the RadiuX and RadiusY to 25 to give it rounded edges. Let’s create another path and drag it right on top of our rounded rectangle like we did earlier. …looking good Select Combine then Unite and you will have a Path. At this point, you can go ahead and add a TextBlock like we did earlier. So let’s look at what we’ve created today using the path element and TextBlock. New Window Via JavaScript Clears Parent

This is not a new item at all but I came across it recently. For an app I had been using some JavaScript like: javascript:window.open(someurl.aspx here) to open a new window via a button. That bit of code had been working great in several other apps. Then in one app that same code decided to open the new window correctly while clearing the parent of everything but [object]. The fix ended up being simple, change the javascript to: javascript:void(window.open(someurl.aspx here); Then it worked like I thought it should. Tags: ASP.Net, JavaScript

Get Func-y

I was working on a Windows form app and needed a way to call out to a service without blocking the UI. There are a lot of ways to do this but I came up with one that I thought was pretty simple. It utilizes the System.Func<> generic class, which is basically a way to create delegates using generics. It's a lot more compact and simpler than creating delegates for each method you want to call asynchronously. I wanted to get it down to one line of code, but it was a lot simpler to use three lines.In this case I have a MyServiceCall method that takes an integer parameter and returns a ServiceCallResult object.public ServiceCallResult MyServiceCall(int param1)...You start by getting a Func<> object for the method you want to call, in this case MyServiceCall. Then you call BeginInvoke() on the Func passing in the parameter. The two nulls are parameters BeginInvoke expects but can be ignored here. BeginInvoke returns an IAsyncResult object that acts like a handle to the method call. Finally to get the value you call EndInvoke on the Func passing in the IAsyncResult object you got back from BeginInvoke.Func<int, ServiceCallResult> f = MyServiceCall;IAsyncResult async = f.BeginInvoke(23, null, null);ServiceCallResult result = f.EndInvoke(async);Doing it this way fires off a new thread that calls the MyServiceCall() method. This leaves the main application thread free to update the UI while the method call is running so it doesn't become unresponsive.

The best intentions were having me at perhaps posting more than twice a month, and here we are and … well it has been busy. There has been a lot of SharePoint 2010 already in this first number of weeks of the year, a good amount of TFS 2010, but even better working quite actively on two topics that I enjoy quite a bit … Windows Azure and Application Lifecycle Management. And there is more to come around those two. Through the influencers program with Geekswithblogs and Discountasp.net I got access to a hosted TFS solution that I am currently testing and will be posting my findings and documenting a good amount of information on that process. Another great resource has been fpweb.net, and there will be more details on this too. Pretty exciting stuff! That is what is going on and what will be coming on here shortly.

Running CopySourceAsHtml Add-in under Visual Studio 2010

Until now CopySourceAsHtml only supports Visual Studio 2008 out of the box. But it is no problem to pimp up the config-file for supporting Visual Studio 2010. Copy all three files to "%userprofile%\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Addins" Open CopySourceAsHtml.AddIn in a text editor and change both lines with <Version>9.0</Version> to <Version>10.0</Version> Run Visual Studio 2010 and CopySourceAsHtml works fine

[LINQ] Master – Detail Same Record(II)

In my previous post, I introduced my problem, but I didn’t explain the problem with Entity Framework When you try the solution indicated you will take the following error: LINQ to Entities don’t recognize the method 'System.String Join(System.String, System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[System.String])’ of the method, and this method can’t be translated into a stored expression. The query that produces that error was: 1: var consulta = (from TCabecera cab in 2: contexto_local.TCabecera 3: let Detalle = (from TDetalle detalle 4: in cab.TDetalle 5: select detalle.Nombre) 6: let Nombres = string.Join(",",Detalle ) 7: select new 8: { 9: cab.Campo1, 10: cab.Campo2, 11: Nombres 12: }).ToList(); 13: grid.DataSource=consulta; Why is this error happening? This error happens when the query couldn’t be translated into T-SQL. Solutions? To quit that error, we need to execute the query on 2 steps: 1: var consulta = (from TCabecera cab in 2: contexto_local.TCabecera 3: let Detalle = (from TDetalle detalle 4: in cab.TDetalle 5: select detalle.Nombre) 6: select new 7: { 8: cab.Campo1, 9: cab.Campo2, 10: Detalle 11: }).ToList(); 12: var consulta2 = (from dato in consulta 13: let Nombes = string.Join(",",dato.Detalle) 14: select new 15: { 16: dato.Campo1, 17: dato.Campo2, 18: Nombres 19: }; 20: grid.DataSource=consulta2.ToList(); Curiously This problem happens with Entity Framework but, the same problem can’t be reproduced on LINQ – To – SQL, that it works fine in one unique step. Because the name can be different on different machines, Designer often replace it with something like ConnectionString1, which causes errors during deployment.It requires developers to ensure that ConnectionString stays unchanged. Macro to Add using System.Linq

I have Visual Studio 2010 setup to remove and sort settings on save with the Power Commands extensions. This is great, but sometimes it removes the using System.Linq at the top. I also find myself scrolling to the top to add the using when I first add System.Linq. So I wrote a quick macro to do it for me. Sub AddUsingLinq() DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.StartOfDocument() DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.StartOfLine(vsStartOfLineOptions.vsStartOfLineOptionsFirstText) DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.Text = "using System.Linq;" DTE.ActiveDocument.Selection.NewLine() DTE.ExecuteCommand("Edit.FormatDocument") DTE.ExecuteCommand("Edit.RemoveAndSort") DTE.ActiveDocument.Save() DTE.ExecuteCommand("View.NavigateBackward") End SubHook this up to a shortcut (tools -> options -> keyboard, I chose ctrl + x, c) and you'll be moving faster than ever.

Why such constructs are included in the csproj-Files? <CodeAnalysisRuleSetDirectories>;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Team Tools\Static Analysis Tools\\Rule Sets</CodeAnalysisRuleSetDirectories> <CodeAnalysisRuleDirectories>;c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Team Tools\Static Analysis Tools\FxCop\\Rules</CodeAnalysisRuleDirectories> So it every projects needs some manual steps to clean the project file so the solution could be build on a continuous integration server. That annoying! And also in a Visual Studio mixed editions team that’s too specific for the ultimate edition. As good as Visual Studio in most cases is, sometimes it is really far away from professional coding fundamentals and best practices.

Starting a new Open-source project - 2 - CommonEventLog is available.
