• Subselecting with MDX

  Greetings stack overflow community. I've recently started building an OLAP cube in SSAS2008 and have gotten stuck. I would be grateful if someone could at least point me towards the right direction. Situation: Two fact tables, same cube. FactCalls holds information about calls made by subscribers, FactTopups holds topup data. Both tables have numerous common dimensions one of them being the Subscriber dimension. FactCalls             FactTopups SubscriberKey      SubscriberKey CallDuration         DateKey CallCost               Topup Value ... What I am trying to achieve is to be able to build FactCalls reports based on distinct subscribers that have topped up their accounts within the last 7 days. What I am basically looking for an MDX equivalent to SQL's: select * from FactCalls where SubscriberKey in ( select distinct SubscriberKey from FactTopups where ... ); I've tried creating a degenerate dimension for both tables containing SubscriberKey and doing: Exist( [Calls Degenerate].[Subscriber Key].Children, [Topups Degenerate].[Subscriber Key].Children ) Without success. • Beginning 3.2+ iPhone development

  I'm interested in learning Objective C for iPhone development. This is a topic which I realize has been covered to death. The qualifying difference is: I'd like to start learning beginning with the latest version (the most recent iPhone OS as of May, 2010 is ver. 3.2 and 4 beta is also out). I'd like to not have to wade through or unlearn legacy information. Using the links I've found throughout related topics on Stack Overflow, I'll read a blog post or tutorial which will say one thing, but then the comments will say, "this is different now in version xyz." For example, I've found this a few times regarding memory management/garbage collection. I assume that Apple's "getting started" doc.s will have the most recent info but many SO posts have said that those are not the most clear. The Stanford iPhone course looks great, but how do I know if it still applies to the most recent versions? Where should one start learning Objective C for iPhone development starting with version 3.2 or later without having as much exposure to legacy information?

  It's actually two questions in one: What is the right attitude for a programmer? How do you (or would you) look for one when interviewing or during hiring process? Please note this question is not about personality or traits of a candidate, it is about their attitude towards what they do for living. This is also not about reverse of programmers pet peeves. The question has been made community wiki, since I am interested in a good answer rather than reputation. I disagree that the question is purely subjective and just a matter of opinion: clearly some attitudes make a better programmer than others. Consecutively, there might quite possibly exist an attitude that is common to the most of the better programmers. Update: After some deliberation I came up with the following attitude measurement scales: identifies themselves with the job ? fully detached perceives code as a collection of concepts ? sees code as a sequence of steps thinks of creating software as an art ? takes 100% rational approach to design and development Answers that include some sort of a comment on the appropriateness of these scales are greatly appreciated. Definition of "attitude": a complex mental state involving beliefs and feelings and values and dispositions to act in certain ways; "he had the attitude that work was fun" The question came as a result of some reflection on the top voted answer to "How do you ensure code quality?" here on Stack Overflow.

• jquery slideToggle() and unknown height?

  Hello! So the problem i am having is that i dont know the height for those hidden elements, because it depends on how much text there is, so when i click on + and show them, animation is 'jumping'. One workaround that i found is to put fixed height and overflow:hidden to those hidden elements. You can see how much smoother animation is running in top left block(the one with 'Vesti iz sveta crtanog filma' at the top). All other blocks dont have fixed height, and animation there is 'jumping'. Atm that fixed height in top left block is 30px, but ofc some elements require more height and some require less, so that is not a good solution... :) So how to stop this animation from 'jumping' when there is no fixed height?

Readable URLs and entity key names Readable URLs are good for usability and search engine optimization (Stack Overflow is a good example on how to do it). On Google App Engine, key based queries are recommended for performance reasons. It follows that it is good practice to use the entity key name in the URL, so that the entity can be fetched from the datastore as quickly as possible. • Ordering view by highest group count question - Ruby on Rails

  I've read the couple of questions about this on stack overflow but can't seem to find the answer. I am trying to display the tags in my blog by the ones with the highest count in the tags table. Thanks to KandadaBoggu for helping me get the tags feature of the blog I am designing working. Here is the basics and my question. Tag belongs_to :post and Post has_many :tags. The tags table is simple really, consisting of the normal scaffolded fields plus post_id and tag_name (I actually called the column 'tag_name' instead of just 'name'). in my /views/posts/index.html/erb file I correctly am displaying the tags by group and the amount of times they are being used (appearing in the tags table). I just want to know how to order them by the highest count. • CSS class not being used on list item with styling

  I have a list item thats styled based on the div container it's in. I want to add a "selected" class to that item, but it's not changing the styling. Firebug doesn't show it inhereting any styles from that css style. You'll see I'm adding class="columnTabSelected" to the first tab, but that's not changing anything. • (C#) Get index of current foreach iteration

  Hi, Is there some rare language construct I haven't encountered (like the few I've learned recently, some on Stack Overflow) in C# to get a value representing the current iteration of a foreach loop? For instance, I currently do something like this depending on the circumstances: int i=0; foreach (Object o in collection) { ... i++; } Answers: @bryansh: I am setting the class of an element in a view page based on the position in the list. I guess I could add a method that gets the CSSClass for the Objects I am iterating through but that almost feels like a violation of the interface of that class. @Brad Wilson: I really like that - I've often thought about something like that when using the ternary operator but never really given it enough thought. As a bit of food for thought it would be nice if you could do something similar to somehow add (generically to all IEnumerable objects) a handle on the enumerator to increment the value that an extension method returns i.e. inject a method into the IEnumerable interface that returns an iterationindex. Of course this would be blatant hacks and witchcraft... Cool though... @crucible: Awesome I totally forgot to check the LINQ methods. Hmm appears to be a terrible library implementation though. I don't see why people are downvoting you though. You'd expect the method to either use some sort of HashTable of indices or even another SQL call, not an O(N) iteration... • Programmer Puzzle: Encoding a chess board state throughout a game

  Not strictly a question, more of a puzzle... Over the years, I've been involved in a few technical interviews of new employees. Other than asking the standard "do you know X technology" questions, I've also tried to get a feel for how they approach problems. Typically, I'd send them the question by email the day before the interview, and expect them to come up with a solution by the following day. Often the results would be quite interesting - wrong, but interesting - and the person would still get my recommendation if they could explain why they took a particular approach. So I thought I'd throw one of my questions out there for the Stack Overflow audience. Question: What is the most space-efficient way you can think of to encode the state of a chess game (or subset thereof)? That is, given a chess board with the pieces arranged legally, encode both this initial state and all subsequent legal moves taken by the players in the game. No code required for the answer, just a description of the algorithm you would use. EDIT: As one of the posters has pointed out, I didn't consider the time interval between moves. Feel free to account for that too as an optional extra :) EDIT2: Just for additional clarification... Remember, the encoder/decoder is rule-aware. The only things that really need to be stored are the player's choices - anything else can be assumed to be known by the encoder/decoder.   Dear Stack Overflow gurus, I am looking for some practical/theoretical information regarding best practices for validation in asp.net mvc n-tier applications. I am working on a .Net application divided into the following layers: UI - Mvc3 BLL layer - all business rules. Decoupled from data access and UI layers through interfaces DAL layer - Data access with the repository pattern, EF4 and pocos Now, I am looking for a nice, clean and transparent way to specify my validation rules. Here are some thoughts on the matter so far: UI validation should only be responsible for user input and its validity. BLL validation should be handling the validity of the data regarding the application business rules. My main concern is how to bind the BLL and UI validation in the most efficient way. One think I am would like to avoid is having the UI check in a collection of validation and adding manually errors to the ModelState. Furthermore, I do not want to pass the ModelState to the BLL to be populated in there. I will appreciate any thoughts on the matter. P.S. Should this question be marked as a discussion ?

• CSS semantics; selecting elements directly or via order

  Perhaps this question has been asked elsewhere, but I'm unable to find it. With HTML5 and CSS3 modules inching closer, I'm getting interested in a discussion about the way we write CSS. Something like this where selection is done via element order and type is particularly fascinating. The big advantage to this method seems to be complete modularization of HTML and CSS to make tweaks and redesigns simpler. At the same time, semantic IDs and classes seem advantageous for sundry reasons. Particularly, direct linking, JS targeting, and shorter CSS selectors. Also, it seems selector length might be an issue. For instance, I just wrote the following, which would be admittedly easier using some semantic HTML5 elements: body>div:nth-child(2)>div:nth-child(2)>ul:nth-child(2)>li:last-child So what say you, Stack Overflow? Is the future of CSS writing focused on element order and type? Or are IDs and classes and the current ways here to stay? (I'm well aware the IDs and classes have their place, although I am interested to hear more ways you think they'll continue to be necessary. The discussion I'm interested in is bigger-picture and the ways writing CSS is changing.)

• dotnetopenauth with asp.net mvc proving too frustrating to use.

  I've been trying excessively hard to implement a good open id solution into asp.net mvc - and everywhere I turn is absolute dead ends. DotNetOpenAuth is just too big and I have been thusfar unable to get even the most simplistic, basic, absolute cut and dry implementation of it to work. NerdDinner had a promising implementation, but it is impossible to track down all of the dependant files and scripts. The DotNetOpenAuth website has virtually no information that helps, either, unfortunately. Does ANYONE know of a simple approach to just implementing this that actually explains and details how it is working with some kind of selector? It is talked about so much, but everything I find for it is so difficult to work with that it is really putting my whole team off from even considering it. We want to implement it similar to how stack overflow already does - using a selector that'll popup a login page if it needs to. I realize there is a lot of code that needs to be done for this, but everything just hails and praises dotnetopenauth, and nothing really teaches it. Even the sample projects do not open or compile. It looks like a wonderful library - but it really just isn't clicking for me.

• Getting Google results in Java? Need help!

  Hello. Right now, I'm trying to get the results from Google in Java, by searching for a term. I'm using a desktop program, not an applet. That in itself isn't complicated. but then Google gave me a 403 error. Anyways, I added referrer and User Agent and then it worked. Now, my problem is that I don't get the results page from Google. Instead, I get their script which gets the results page. My code right now simply uses a GET request on "http://www.google.com/search?q=" + Dork; Then it outputs each line. Here is what I get when I run my program: <.!doctype html<.head<.titledork - Google Search<./title<.scriptwindow.google={kEI:"9myaS-Date).getTime()}}};try{}catch(u){}window.google.jsrt_kill=1; align:center}#logo{display:block;overflow:hidden;position:relative;width:103px;height:37px; <./ script<./div Lots of stuff like that. I shortened it (A LOT) and put in dots to fit it here. So my big question is: How do I turn this whole mess into the nice results page I get when searching Google with a browser? Any help would be seriously appreciated, and I really need the answer fast. Also, please keep in mind that I do NOT want to use Google's API for this. Thanks in advance!

• How can UISearchDisplayController autorelease cause crash in a different view controller?

  Hi, I have two view controllers A and B. That is until I added a UISearchDisplayController to the table view contained in BViewController. Now when I navigate out of B, back to A, the app crashes. In navigateToB method, once the bViewController is released (after pushViewController), that's should be it for bViewController. Nothing else even knows about it as it is local to the navigateToB method block and it has been released. When navigating from B back to A, nothing is invoked in viewDidLoad, viewWillAppear etc that will re-enter navigateToB. It looks like somehow search display controller has a reference to something in my AViewController and so as it is autoreleased it is taking this "something" down with it but I cannot understand how this is possible, especially as I'm using copy to pass data between A and B. I'm going potty over this. I'm sure this is my mistake somewhere and so I turn to you, Stack Overflow legends for any words of wisdom or advice on how to resolve this. Many Thanks.

• Why do people say that Ruby is slow?

  I like Ruby on Rails and I use it for all my web development projects. A few years ago there was a lot of talk about Rails being a memory hog and about how it didn't scale very well but these suggestions were put to bed by Gregg Pollack here. Lately though, I've been hearing people saying that Ruby itself is slow. Why is Ruby considered slow? I do not find Ruby to be slow but then again, I'm just using it to make simple CRUD apps and company blogs. What sort of projects would I need to be doing before I find Ruby becoming slow? Or is this slowness just something that affects all programming languages? What are your options as a Ruby programmer if you want to deal with this "slowness"? Which version of Ruby would best suit an application like Stack Overflow where speed is critical and traffic is intense? The questions are subjective, and I realise that architectural setup (EC2 vs standalone servers etc) makes a big difference but I'd like to hear what people think about Ruby being slow. Finally, I can't find much news on Ruby 2.0 - I take it we're a good few years away from that then?

• Investigating the root cause behind SharePoint's "request not found in the TrackedRequests"

  We have a long standing issue in our bug tracking system about the dreaded "ERROR: request not found in the TrackedRequests. We might be creating and closing webs on different threads." message in SharePoint's trace log. As we develop Workflow software for the SharePoint market, we look into this issue from time to time to make sure it is not caused by our products. I have personally come to the conclusion that this is a problem in SharePoint, but perhaps someone else can prove me wrong. Here is what I know: According to the hundreds of search results returned by Google on this topic, this issue appears to be mainly related to SharePoint Workflows, both SharePoint Designer and Visual Studio based workflows. Assuming ULS logging is set to Monitorable, the easiest way to reproduce this problem is to create a new SharePoint Designer Workflow, attach it to a document library, set it to auto start on add/update, don't add any actions, save the workflow and upload a file to the document library. The error is only visible in the SharePoint trace log, it does not appear to impact the execution of the workflow at hand. I have verified that the problem occurs on 32 bit as well as 64 bit systems, Win2K3 and 2K8, WSS and MOSS with SharePoint versions up to the December 2009 Cumulative Update (6524). The problem does not occur when a workflow is started manually. There are dozens of related posts on MSDN Forums, hundreds on Google, one on StackOverflow and none on SharePoint Overflow. There appears to be no answer. Does anyone have any idea about what is going on, what is causing this and if we should worry or file this under 'Red Herrings'.

• Browser history back with scrollable div

  When I Jump to section 1 & 2 everything works fine, and the browsers I tested (IE8, FF3.6, Chrome 5.0.342.3) scrolls down to the respective anchor in the div. But when I press the browser history back button the div won't scroll back up. There are (at least) two kinds of Win API users: those that have been brought up using Windows API in C/C++, and those that have been brought up using some level of abstraction above the Windows API. I belong to the latter category, being brought up using Delphi's VCL. But over the last five years, I have become increasingly interested in the underlaying API of the Windows operating system, and today I work a lot with it. Depending on which category a programmer belongs to, he (or possibly she) will think that different things are "cool" in the Windows API. For instance, whereas a VCL-brought up developer might think it it very cool to var errIcon: HICON; begin errIcon := LoadIcon(0, IDI_ERROR); DrawIcon(Canvas.Handle, 10, 10, errIcon), a programmer brought up using Windows API in C will not be as impressed. But no matter how you are "brought up": what are the coolest "tricks" in Windows API? I start by listing a few of my own favourites, some of which are more "cool" than "useful", though: LoadIcon and MessageBeep can load/play system default icons and sounds. • Focusing a textarea

  Int he below code a textarea is added 6 times and initially the textarea conatins the text Enter Text. My question is, if the user enters data in first and third textareas. • What is the right way to make a new XMLHttpRequest from an RJS response in Ruby on Rails?

  I'm trying to come closer to a solution for the problem of my previous question. The scheme I would like to try is following: User requests an action from RoR controller. Action makes some database queries, makes some calculations, sets some session variable(s) and returns some RJS code as the response. This code could either update a progress bar and make another ajax request. display the final result (e.g. a chart grahic) if all the processing is finished The browser evaluates the javascript representation of the RJS. It may make another (recursive? Is recursion allowed at all?) request, or just display the result for the user. So, my question this time is: how can I embed a XMLHttpRequest call into rjs code properly? Some things I'd like to know are: Should I create a new thread to avoid stack overflow. What rails helpers (if any) should I use? Have anybody ever done something similar before on Rails or with other frameworks? Is my idea sane?

  As in this Stack Overflow answer imagine that you need to select a particular table and then all the rows of it. Due to the permissiveness of HTML, all three of the following are legal markup: <table id="foo"><tr>...</tr></table> <table id="foo"><tbody><tr>...</tr></tbody></table> <table id="foo"><tr>...</tr><tbody><tr>...</tr></tbody></table> You are worried about tables nested in tables, and so don't want to use an XPath like table[@id="foo"]//tr. If you could specify your desired XPath as a regex, it might look something like: table[@id="foo"](/tbody)?/tr In general, how can you specify an XPath expression that allows an optional element in the hierarchy of a selector? To be clear, I'm not trying to solve a real-world problem or select a specific element of a specific document. I'm asking for techniques to solve a class of problems.

• IPreInsertEventListener makes object dirty, causes invalid update

  In NHibernate 2.1.2: I'm attempting to set a created timestamp on insert, as demonstrated here. I have this: public bool OnPreInsert(PreInsertEvent @event) { if (@event.Entity is IHaveCreatedTimestamp) { DateTime dt = DateTime.Now; string Created = ((IHaveCreatedTimestamp)@event.Entity).CreatedPropertyName; SetState(@event.Persister, @event.State, Created, dt); @event.Entity.GetType().GetProperty(Created).SetValue(@event.Entity, dt, null); } // return true to veto the insert return false; } The problem is that doing this (or duplicating Ayende's example precisely, or reordering or removing lines) causes an update after the insert. The insert uses the correct "now" value, @p6 = 3/8/2011 5:41:22 PM, but the update tries to set the Created column to @p6 = 1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM, which is outside MSSQL's range: Test 'CanInsertAndDeleteInserted' failed: System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlTypeException : SqlDateTime overflow. Must be between 1/1/1753 12:00:00 AM and 12/31/9999 11:59:59 PM. I've tried the same thing with the PerformSaveOrUpdate listener, described here, but that also causes an update and an insert, and elsewhere there have been mentions of avoiding it because it is called regardless of if the object is dirty or not :/ Searching around elsewhere, there are plenty of claims of success after setting both the state and the object to the same value, or by using the save listener, or of the cause coming from collections or other objects, but I'm not having any success.
