    I'm trying to setup MySQL db replication, it seems pretty straight forward. I was using this tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/mysql_database_replication Now I run a rather large MySQL database for a very large website, and in this tutorial it asks me to restart MySQL to apply the new settings in the /etc/my.cnf file. I'm try to avoid that step at all costs, as I know that restarting MySQL can take a few minutes on my machine (due to large logs/dbs), and I don't want any downtime. Is there a way to apply the necessary settings WITHOUT fully restarting Mysql?

  • Version control and branching when using Oracle

    Hi folks: At work we're using Oracle and C#/ASP.net to handle a customer's website, this site is very large-scale so the database is very large. We use Perforce for our version control, and tack create or replace scripts to FogBugz cases whenever a database change, which has been fine until now, as we are now at a point where five developers are working on five expansions for the system, each on a seperate Perforce branch. Unfortunately, we cannot get duplicate databases, due to the database size, so everyone is still working from the same one. This is obviously a cause of problems: only ten minutes ago we had a bit of an issue where a stored procedure change for a branch propagated over to the Pre-Production server and caused a large number of crashes for the testers. Ideally, we would like a way to track these changes without having to manually keep track of them through FogBugz. My question is: how do you lot handle this situation? I'm sure there must be a good way by now to handle versioning, or at least tracking changes, in an Oracle database.

    I was asked to get an SSL certificate for an "Oracle Application Server 11g" which has a soon-to-expire certificate. Brushing aside the fact that 10g seems to be the newest version, I got a certificate from InCommon, as I usually do without problem (except this is the first time I supplied Oracle Application Server 11g as the software type on the CSR form). On the email containing links to download the certificate, it mentioned: Certificate Details: SSL Type : InCommon SSL Server : OTHER I forwarded the email over to the person responsible for installing it and got a reply that the server type must be Oracle Application Server for the certificate to work (the CN is the same as before). They were unable to install this certificate (no details provided to me) and mentioned they had this issue previously with Thawte when they didn't supply Oracle Application Server as the server type. I don't see any significant difference between the currently installed certificate (working) and the new one I just got signed by InCommon (not working). $ openssl x509 -in sso-current.cer -text shows, with irrelevant information ommitted.   • Take all fields in a database table and put them straight into a text file

    I have an database file (mdb) file that contains a dictionary of words. A couple thousand of them. I just need the words (in the order they are already in) put into a text file. Currently they have ID's associated with them (e.g. 1, 2, 3) but I don't need it. I just need the words. What is the best way to do this? Actually, if somebody is able to find a dictionary of English words (something along the lines of a scrabble dictionary) that is free online, I'll accept that too. I just can't seem to find any good ones online.

    The tablespace in Oracle 10g is almost 100% used. Size (MB) = 571,768.0 Used (MB) = 571,534.0 I just deleted (and committed) thousands of records in a table that belongs to a schema associated with that tablespace. Surprisingly, no space was freed up according to the Tablespaces page on Enterprise Manager. Question: is there anything that I need to do to force Oracle to release the space corresponding to the deleted records?

Can anyone here recommend a database or similar system which matches the following criteria: Intuitive to use for users with little computer experience Multi-user support, ideally with integration in our existing LDAP user directory Should have a web-interface Not a hosted solution like Picasa (because we have a rather slow internet connection with very slow upload) Should allow tagging of images, sorting by various criteria and storing copyright information If there are native GNOME and/or Windows clients for the tool, that would be a great benefit.   • Using mongodump with an auth enabled mongodb server

    I'm trying to do a daily backup of my mongodb server (auth enabled) using the mongodump tool. mongodump provides two parameters to set the credentials: -u [ --username ] arg username -p [ --password ] arg password Unfortunately they don't provide any parameter to read the password from stdin. Therefore everytime I run this command, everyone on the server can read the password (e.g. by using ps aux). The only workaround I have found is stopping the database and directly accessing the database files using the --dbpath parameter. Is there any other solution which allows me to backup the mongodb database without stopping the server and without "publishing" my password? I am using Debian squeeze 6.0.5 amd64 with mongodb 1.4.4-3.

    I'm running a Java application with an Oracle 10g. I've discovered kind of a race condition that leads to an inifite long waiting time for an UPDATE statement. To solve this situation I'd like to find out what this statement is waiting for (locks on certain tables caused by statement xy etc.). I tried to use the Oracle Enterprise Manager which has found this situation as well but it doesn't tell my the reason for the wait.
