• .vob to h.264 MP4 Files - Worth The Effort?

  When I was doing the converting to digital format a while back I chose .VOB due to no quality loss. However recently I have been informed of this h.264 compression method. Time is not an issue here, I don't mind waiting for conversions etc. I also understand that any sort of compression will reduce quality. To test I converted a 4GB .VOB to a .mp4 using h264 in handbrake and the quality loss was very very very hard to notice. From what I have understood through research Space = .mp4(h.264) Quality = .Vob Playback = Both equally supported? But these concerns have yet to be answered: My comparison was done on a computer monitor, would the quality loss be substantially noticable if I purchased a 50 inch TV in the future? Is this type of file highly supported? (I don't want to experience incompatible players) What other issues could a conversion of files such as this cause in the future?

  Following instructions from the following website: http://code.google.com/p/support/wiki/ImportingFromGit I'm trying to migrate a git repository to svn, but during the "git rebase master tmp" step it fails with the following error after apply the first few patches: $ git rebase master tmp First, rewinding head to replay your work on top of it... Applying: Imported Applying: Cleaned up the readme file Applying: fix problem with versions fatal: unable to write file foobar mode 120000 Patch failed at 0003 fix problem with versions When you have resolved this problem run "git rebase --continue". I understand that 120000 may refer to a symlink, but Subversion has supported symlinks for a long time now. Subversion installed is 1.6.5, Git is 1.6.3.3. Running on Ubuntu Linux. The system is not running out of disk space and this operation is taking place within my home directory so permissions should not be an issue.

• Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

  I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

• bash completion processing gone bad, how to debug?

  It all started with a simple alias gv='gvim --remote-quiet' and now gv Space Tab gives nothing where it normally should give filenames. Oddly, alias gvi='gvim --remote-quiet' works as expected. • Is anyone else using OpenBSD as a router in the enterprise? What hardware are you running it on?

  We have an OpenBSD router at each of our locations, currently running on generic "homebrew" PC hardware in a 4U server case. Due to reliability concerns and space considerations we're looking at upgrading them to some proper server-grade hardware with support etc. These boxes serve as the routers, gateways, and firewalls at each site. At this point we're quite familiar with OpenBSD and Pf, so hesitant at moving away from the system to something else such as dedicated Cisco hardware. I'm currently thinking of moving the systems to some HP DL-series 1U machines (model yet to be determined). I'm curious to hear if other people use a setup like this in their business, or have migrated to or away from one.

  I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet with Windows 8.1. The c:\ is very limited capacity at only 24GB. With the OS only on the c:\ I just have 8.6GB of free space. So I have added a 64gb SSD to the machine and want to install all my apps on it and not the C Drive. I know the apps get installed in c:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder so I have ROBOCOPY'd all the files to d:\Program Files\WindowsApps and created a symbolic link using mklink. It seems that new apps are install correctly now on d:\ however the existing apps fail to open. What is the Microsoft's solution to making this happen seamlessly?

  Which is faster for read access on an EC2 instance; the "local" drive or an attached EBS volume? I have some data that needs to be persisted so have placed this on an EBS volume. I'm using OpenSolaris, so this volume has been attached as a ZFS pool. However, I have a large chunk of EC2 disk space that's going to go unused, so I'm considering re-purposing this as a ZFS cache volume but I don't want to do this if the disk access is going to be slower than that of the EBS volume as it would potentially have a detrimental effect.

• Updating from OSX Lion 10.7.2 to 10.7.4

  I just got my Mac upgraded to 10.7.2, just to be able to install Xcode 4.3.3. However, when I try to install Xcode 4.3.3, it says that it requires a minimum of OSX 10.7.3. Then using the "Software Upgrade" tool it detects successfully for me that a combined upgrade to 10.7.4 is available. As I select Install Item, the download starts however, it fails after complete download (taking two hours) saying something like "the update cannot be saved". I have done this twice already, and followed it up until 5 minutes were left. I have also checked that there is enough space (60 GB) available on my hard disk, while the update requires around 1.5 GB. The question is what is causing the problem mentioned in bold above.

• What metric captures why my OSX machine is so slow during XCode indexing

  My entire machine OSX Lion machine slows down while XCode 4.4 is indexing. The CPU is less than 10% busy, I've got over 500 MB free memory, plenty of disk space, disk IO rate is not high, network activity is not high. Indexing just a few files can take minutes and builds are extremely slow. While this is going on, even loading a new web page in Chrome can be slow. Knowing how to fix it would be great, but more fundamentally how can I measure what is actually going slowly? What metrics should I be looking at? Nothing in Activity Monitor, iostat, top, or sar betray anything about what's going on to me. Even getting a man page is interminable.

• Why do msi installations use slower drives over faster ones in windows 7?

  I have noticed that the slowest drive in my system is used most during an msi installation. I mainly notice this when running windows updates but it seems to be msi installs in general. The setup I last saw this occur on was running Windows 7 with the following drives: Sata: 240GB SSD NTFS ~515MB/s Operating system drive 1TB NTFS ~110MB/s Firewire: 4TB ExFAT ~80MB/s I would think that windows would choose the fastest drive with available space for temporary files. But it will instead choose the external drive with the slowest transfer speed. I could also understand choosing the 1TB for not being an ssd in an attempt to preserve the longevity of the ssd write capacity. Why does this happen? Is there a way to force these installations to use the OS drive or a specific drive?

  We have a decent-sized server estate: several ProLiants, plus IBM BladeCentre and SANs running a VMWare environment. Due to an imminent premises move, we're not going to have enough space for a server room, so I've been looking at moving everything out to a colo. My boss is more keen on the idea of cloud-hosting everything, which would include a couple of high-traffic websites (about 9m pageviews/month), our Exchange sever (about a million clean emails sent/received monthly), as well as file/print/AD/all the ususal stuff. This doesn;t sound like a good idea to me, but I'm new to the ways of the cloud. Can anyone offer any advice?

  I am trying to write a beautify CSS command in vim that sorts and alphabetizes all of the CSS properties as well as checks to see if there is not a space after the colon and inserts one. • FortiGate firewall configuration with /30 and /28 networks

  I have fiber coming in from a new ISP which is being handed off via Ethernet on a single physical port. I'm having doubts about how to approach the configuration on my FortiGate 200A firewall because I've been given a /30 containing the ISP's gateway and another /28 for external IPs I can use: x.y.76.12/30 (.13 is the GW) x.y.76.64/28 (public IP space) How do I configure the FG200A's WAN1 interface to be aware of the two networks? As I only have one physical ISP port, will I need to plug it into a switch to break-out two cables and use a DMZ port on the FG200A for setting up the /28? Thanks in advance for your insight!

• Is there a quick way to remove browser decorations

  I'm finding that more and more applications use browsers as their user interface and I am caught in a dilemma. When browsing I want a browser window to have browser buttons, navigation icons, etc. When I'm using the browser for an application like twitter or yammer then I don't need those and having them just reduces the application area. I would rather save the vertical space and have a very sparse undecorated window. The problem is it does not seem easy to do this. My initial thought was to just install two different browsers. For example use Firefox with all the toolbars and then set IE to show no toolbars. I think this is ok but I would like a cleaner solution. Maybe a plugin in Firefox that turns everything off easily or something.

• How would I / could I obtain an reasonably comprehensive list of domain names?

  I know that domain names are constantly changing, and I know there are a lot of them, but there is clearly a region of the domain name space which is stable. How would I go about getting a list, even a very big one? Such a thing must logically exist, even if it is in a distributed form, because the web's DNS servers resolve names to IP addresses. So in theory if I could poll all the DNS servers in the world at a moment in time I would have the complete list of mapped names. Is there a practical way of doing that? As an aside, does anyone have any good estimates of how many domain names exist at the moment?

  in LVM1 there was a limit of 65k extends. So size of extent had to been chosen carefully between wasted space on partitions (to big extent) and maximal possible size of logical volume (too small extent). in lvm2 (according to http://docstore.mik.ua/manuals/hp-ux/en/5992-4589/apa.html) the limit is ~16 million extents. so the default size of 4mb gives ~60TB of LV size. so is there any point in making the extent larger than 4-16mb on a desktop? is there any performance degradation or other costs of having big number of extents?

• background copy large files to a laptop?

  Hey All, I like to watch windows media center recorded TV files on my laptop in bed. I find thought that when the programs are in HD I have a lot of stuttering and delays--no doubt b/c of the amount of data being transferred. I actually have a fair amount of space on the laptop's hdd, and wouldn't mind moving the files onto that hard drive, where no doubt my problem would go away. But that requires some planning & time for the files to move. Is there a utility out there that would kind of 'trickle' the files over to the laptop over a long period of time, w/out soaking its bandwidth? Something like ms' BITS tech?   Hi, i need to do a presentation dvd of my photos, so i would like to make a nice flash gallery with my photos embedded inside flash files, so there is no way of stealing my shoots just browsing dvd folders. Inside a dvd i'll have plenty of space so i don't care about the size of the flash file itself. There is any way to do that? Because as far as i see, all the flash galleries uses an XML file to load the images from outside, so all the shoots are jpeg put in another folder, and anyone can take them just copying the folder.

• Unable to Get IIS Response Times with Hyperic Monitoring Tool

  We have a very large .NET application (vendor) that I am trying to gather performance metrics for using Hyperic. In general I wanted to be able to report response times for each of the components within the application, which include: Web Services ASP.NET Pages MSMQ I am currently unable to successfully monitor the response times for IIS on my windows machines. I have successfully auto-discovered them and I am getting diagnostic information, but am not getting back the response times. After looking online at what other people are seeing, I found that I am missing a tab for the response times which is usually next to the metrics tab. Also, when I look at the configuration screen for IIS I do not see a field which enables me to specify where the log files are located at. Please note that my logs are located at e:\LogFiles\ instead of the usual location because our IT staff doesn't allocate much space for the C: drive. Please note that I have the MSMQ monitors up and running great. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeremy

  I googled over this topic but couldn't find what I was looking for... the following "happend" to me: I had my files stored on a NTFS-USB Harddisk, because of space problems I moved them to an ext3 system....somehow the filename (content is still ok as far as I saw) encoding screwed up....my files look like the following now: Kküken <--- should have an "ü" Jäger <--- should be an "ä" Zwölf <--- should be an "ö" fünfte <-- should be an "ü" etc .... These are just examples, but already give me my first question Why has the "ü" two different representations? (Maybe I screw up, before I screw up and now I have a mixing of x different encoding-layers? :) ) I tried the following command: convmv -r -f UTF-8 -t ISO-8859-1 * This command work for some files (for example Zwölf) but not for all: iso-8859-1 doesn't cover all needed characters for: "fünfte" So Iguess it must be another encoding - but which? How can I find out this? And is there any way that I can still fix all of this?

ERROR: Connection to the server [email protected] timed out. I am behind a proxy server and I have configured those settings under: Thunderbird Preferences - Advanced - Network and Disk Space - Connection Settings - Manual Proxy Configuration The proxy configuration works, as when I created a Blogs and News feeds a/c, it was working properly and fetching the feeds for me. So, Thunderbird is configured properly as per the proxy settings. Help me.

  I'm installing Ubuntu server on a disk with 12GB available. During the setup, I choose the default LVM-based partition layout. However for some reason, Ubuntu decides that it only wants to use 4GB of this disk. How do I reclaim the remaining space of the hard disk?   MySQL cluster: Error after 1 data node is shutdown and started again. We have configured MySQL cluster(version 7.1) with 2 sql/data nodes. We are using table space instead of in-memory clustering. The setup was working fine. So to test the setup I shutdown one data node, updated a table and and again stated the stopped node. Its giving this error and not starting. Any ideas ? Forced node shutdown completed. Occured during startphase 5. Caused by error 2306: 'Pointer too large(Internal error, programming error or missing error message, please report a bug). Temporary error, restart node'.
