• How to find a binary logarithm very fast? (O(1) at best)

  Is there any very fast method to find a binary logarithm of an integer number? For example, given a number x=52656145834278593348959013841835216159447547700274555627155488768 such algorithm must find y=log(x,2) which is 215. x is always a power of 2. The problem seems to be really simple. All what is required is to find the position of the most significant 1 bit. There is a well-known method FloorLog, but it is not very fast especially for the very long multi-words integers. What is the fastest method?

  I am working on a project with RL & NN I need to determine the action vector structure which will be fed to a neural network.. I have 3 different actions (A & B & Nothing) each with different powers (e.g A100 A50 B100 B50) I wonder what is the best way to feed these actions to a NN in order to yield best results? 1- feed A/B to input 1, while action power 100/50/Nothing to input 2 2- feed A100/A50/Nothing to input 1, while B100/B50/Nothing to input 2 3- feed A100/A50 to input 1, while B100/B50 to input 2, while Nothing flag to input 3 4- Also to feed 100 & 50 or normalize them to 2 & 1 ? • What HTML is permitted within Flash text fields.

  Hi, Could someone clarify for me what input Flash accepts for its text fields? I am tasked with managing a content management system, this then generates XML which power's flash sites. I have nothing to do with Flash. I work with PHP. Currently we use a rather temperamental Flash Text Editor which is prone to all sorts of troubles. I tried to plug-in tinyMce but it broke the Flash templates. I then recently spoke to someone who said that flash should take any HTML. Now I am confused as this would point to a dodgy template. Can someone clarify. Do Flash text fields handle all HTML or just a limited subset of HTML. If it is the latter, what happens if it comes across a tag it doesn't recognise? Does it display the tag or break? Thanks, Jason

• ASP.Net MVC and N-Tier

  Greetings, Apologies in advance that I have not researched this toughly enough to answer the question myself, but I imagine it would take me some time and I would rather know now before I invest more time in learning it. I couldn't find anything in my initial research.. Why use ASP.Net MVC if your already using a multi-tier architecture (Data Layer, Logic Layer, Presentation Layer)? Other than the fact the controller has more power than the logic layer. Am I right in thinking I can use nHibernate and all my data access classes, entities, and mappings in the Model part of the MVC? When using controllers, is it best to separate a lot of the logic into a separate class so I can call it from multiple controllers? Or can I call them from the controllers themselves, considering the fact that I would not want all of them to be Actions, just normal methods. Thanks

• Difference between Document-oriented-DB and Bigtable clones

  We are looking for a suitable storage engine for our weblog history data. We looked at Bigtable's paper and understand it is suitable to us well. However, I also understand that Document-oriented-DB such as MongoDB seems to provide a little more powerful schema power -- i.e, it can model our data as well. I wonder how nowadays ppl choose a scalable NoSQL DB --- I read enough articles like "we looked at A, B and C, and we decided to use C". But I'd like to see some benchmark number. What I am saying is that if MongoDB and the like can provide same level of performance as Bigtable clones, why don't web companies choose it (preparing to deal with various potentially more complex data problem)? • What is the underlying reason for not being able to put arrays of pointers in unsafe structs in C#?

  If one could put an array of pointers to child structs inside unsafe structs in C# like one could in C, constructing complex data structures without the overhead of having one object per node would be a lot easier and less of a time sink, as well as syntactically cleaner and much more readable. Is there a deep architectural reason why fixed arrays inside unsafe structs are only allowed to be composed of "value types" and not pointers? I assume only having explicitly named pointers inside structs must be a deliberate decision to weaken the language, but I can't find any documentation about why this is so, or the reasoning for not allowing pointer arrays inside structs, since I would assume the garbage collector shouldn't care what is going on in structs marked as unsafe. Digital Mars' D handles structs and pointers elegantly in comparison, and I'm missing not being able to rapidly develop succinct data structures; by making references abstract in C# a lot of power seems to have been removed from the language, even though pointers are still there at least in a marketing sense. Maybe I'm wrong to expect languages to become more powerful at representing complex data structures efficiently over time.

• VS 2008 SP1 text editor flickering over remote desktop connection

  I am connecting from a Windows 7 x64 machine to my dev machine running Windows XP SP3 using the built in remote desktop client. For most apps it works fine with no problems, for Visual Studio whenever I am typing the entire text editor keeps redrawing. I stumbled across this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/873849/vs-2008-sp1-over-remote-desktop-constant-repainting and I have tried all of the suggestions in it to no effect, including resetting all VS settings back to default then disabling the suggested settings. Has anyone found a reliable solution to this? I feel like I'm going insane with the screen constantly refreshing when I'm working from home. Some additional information: Remote Desktop is set to run at 1680x1050, 15bit color, Low-speed broadband for the experience setting with all but Visual styles and Persistent bitmap caching unchecked. Visual Studio 2008 Team System is running on the dev machine with Service Pack 1 and Power Commands installed.

  Hello. As a not so experienced man in programming, I start to use netbeans PLATFORM. And I am really impressed by its power (for rich desktop app). I have been learning the programming in another way on university. I have never thought that something as powerful as nb Platform exists. My idea was that 30 people work on some rich desktop app for more than year to make it "beta". Now I know, that it is much more easier. But, I have never be satisfied with my own opinions about "something is best". I am still looking for better mouse trap. So the question is: What is most powerful IDE you know? Previously, for my similar Winforms App, I had extended the IComponent (Component Class) and wrote our VS Like designer kind of custom control which will allow users to drag drop controls from the visual studio toolbox and then I export it as a VisualStudio C#&VB ItemTemplate. • Integrating Pentaho/Talend/etc. with an OR Mapper

  We have an application (Java) with an own OR mapper. Within this system we have what can be compared to Hibernate's interceptors (we call it triggers): Do specific actions just before saving data in the database, after it's deleted and so on. The underlying database is MySQL. Now we would like to use tools such as Pentaho Data Integration or Talend to convert data to put it into our system. It's no problem to do that directly on the SQL level, but by doing so we loose the built-in power of our triggers. Is there a way to somehow integrate any of the Data Integration solutions into our existing application? It would be great if there was a way to write into instances of our classes instead of writing into the database directly. Any hints welcome :-)

  Hi Ejb timer service can start some process in desired time intervals. Also we can do the same thing with cron (min 1 minute) interval. But doing it with cron we have more power on controlling, monitoring and changing the intervals. Also we can restart if needed the cron very easily by command line. Also we can add or remove lines in the cron transparently. What are the advantages of using ejb timer services over calling the ejbs from cron ? (several lines of code in the cron classes are not a problem) Regards.

• my windows forms application throws filenotfoundexception when run on another machine

  Hi, I have created a windows forms application using vs2008. when i copy the bin folder over to another machine and try to run it the applicaiton throws a filenotfoundexception error. Ive looked at the references files used in the project and each file points to either c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727... c:\Program Files\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5... c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Visual Basic Power Packs\1.1... i have verified that these directories exist on the other machines that cause the error. the two machines that i have tried it on and that throw there error are Windows XP WITHOUT VS2008 installed and Windows 7 with VS2008 installed I tried on two machine that DID work which are Windows XP with VS2008 and and my development machine Windows 7 with VS2008 Could anyone provide me with some insight on this issue Thanks

• Share pre-initialized GIT repository

  We were sharing a GIT repository via file-sharing system (smb://) and got it badly corrupted (a power cut meanwhile the post-send :P). Being new to GIT, trying to fix it I made it even worse and I lost all the refs (left with the object folder). Since the incident I haven't had the time to look at the problem and have just been keeping committing to my local clone. So my question is : Is there a way to copy the local repository back to the location of the old repository and make it a shared repository in order to keep some track of previous the history ? That's all I could figure out (I'm still a git-noob), any other solutions are more than welcome ! Thanks in advance !

• Using Thor for generators in a Ruby Gem

  How do I setup a Gem to have a binary command eg. "project newProject" that uses Thor's set of generator commands to create files etc.? A good answer would describe how to layout the skeleton of a gem that that when run from the command line "project newProject" creates 1 file named "newProject.txt" in the directory it's run from. I've seen that Rails 3 is using Thor to power it's generators, seems like a really good solution and i'd like to use a similar approach in non-Rails ruby gem i'm working on. Tried looking at the Rails 3 source but it's a bit labyrinthine hence the question.

• Generating a scalogram of a signal

  Hi there, I'm trying to build a scalogram view for my app to see whether there is relevant information we can retrieve from a wavelet transform as opposed to using a spectograms to see what can be retrieved via an FFT. So far I can take a wave form and I can perform the forward wavelet transform on it. However I am lost at the next step. How do I turn this information into power/energy information? I have a set of wave forms at different frequencies but I have, as I say, no frequency information. Can anyone tell me what the next step is for turning this transformed data into a scalogram? Any help would be much appreciated because my google skills are failing me!

I am not sure if this question fits on this site :S if it doesn't please let me know and i remove it :) well... here is my problem I just got a steel series headset for christmas(yay!) and i quickly plugged it into my MacBook Pro. The audio output works fine, but i am having issues with the audio input :( i had these kinds of problems before and i think my mac may be broken :( but then i saw this post: http://www.biloca.com/blog/?p=25 and they talked about some power issues to the microphone on the Mac Mini... • Quartz2d vector images vs OpenGL vector description?

  How big of a difference is the description language of Quartz2d to OpenGL ES? It seems they are similar in description power... except that Quartz is mostly 2d and that OpenGL is out of the box 3d ( but can be made 2d focused ). Are the mappings from 2dQuartz to 2d OpenGL ES that different? Im sure there must be differences in some specific features that might be handled differently on one vs another... but to do a translator? Anyone have experience with both OpenGL and Quartz2d have some insights?
