• Can 3D OpenGL game written in Python look good and run fast?

  I am planning to write an simple 3d(isometric view) game in Java using jMonkeyEngine - nothing to fancy, I just want to learn something about OpenGL and writing efficient algorithms (random map generating ones). When I was planning what to do, I started wondering about switching to Python. I know that Python didn't come into existence to be a tool to write 3d games, but is it possible to write good looking games with this language? I have in mind 3d graphics, nice effects and free CPU time to power to rest of game engine? I had seen good looking java games - and too be honest, I was rather shocked when I saw level of detail achieved in Runescape HD. On the other hand, pygame.org has only 2d games, with some starting 3d projects. Are there any efficient 3d game engines for python? Is pyopengl the only alternative? Good looking games in python aren't popular or possible to achieve? I would be grateful for any information / feedback.

• Improving the efficiency of Kinect for Windows DTWGestureRecognition Application

  Currently I am using the DTWGestureRecognition open source tool for Kinect SDK v1.5. I have recorded a few gestures and use them to navigate through Windows 7. I also have implemented voice control for simple things such as opening PowerPoint, Chrome, etc. My main issue is that the application uses quite a bit of my CPU power which causes it to become slow. During gestures and voice commands, the CPU usage sometimes spikes to 80-90%, which causes the application to be unresponsive for a few seconds. I am running it on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine with an i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM. I was wondering if anyone with any experience using this tool or Kinect in general has made it more efficient and less performance hogging. Right now I removed sections which display the RGB video and the Depth video but even doing that did not make a big impact. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

• Processes sharing cores on Ubuntu system

  My coworkers and I share an 8-core server running Ubuntu for our batch processes. I tend to run 4 processes at a time, each of which consumes 100% CPU per core when nothing else is running. When a coworker runs his processes (typically about 4 at a time), his also get 100% per. However, when both of us run ours (he always goes first), his still get 100% and mine seem to divide the remaining processing power and linger in the 10-40% range. I even reniced his process to a lower value and it did not change. What are the issues that may cause this?

• How can I get to the value of my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty from UI Automation Framework?

  Hi, I'm having trouble getting access to my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty values through the UI Automation Framework. I've used James McCaffreys article in MSDN as a starting point (Automating IO Tests in WPF Applications, MSDN March 2009), but I can only see properties etc in standard controls such as buttons. I'm assuming there's some Automation interface I have to implement on my UserControl, but what and how? I can already see my control fine e.g. in UISpy, but I can't see the dependency properties within it.   I'm giving a presentation at NDC 2010 and in one of the talks I'm going to focus on education and its power over your career (and you personally). There are people who mercilessly educate themselves, and there are others who are a bit ho-hum about it, feeling a bit of apathy. If you remove all of the risk associated surrounding a "refocus" of your career - what choices would you make? What things would you learn and what would you do with it? Think of it as a reroll, Ground Hog day, starting over from scratch today. What platform and language choices would you make and why? Most important to me are those who are completely happy where they are - would love to hear more about what it is that keeps you where you're at. • Programming languages & proof of concepts

  There are plenty of programming languages out there, as you all may know. I am primarily looking for a list of programming languages WITH some very neat proof of concepts. I would really like to learn a new language, but whenever I dive into something new and popular, it isn't what I expected. Any tutorial out there will give you code, small examples, but won't show you the true power of the language. I am looking for examples that run entirely on the language that it is exemplifying. For example, If I said C#, I could possibly show you a complete C# app with backend queries, reports, tables, all with a nice interface. It would be completely reliant on the language that is provided, so no supporting languages. I understand that most languages are integrated with other languages in order to provide a richer application. Any links, charts, websites that may reflect this request is appreciated.

• Analysis Services with excel as front end - is it possible to get the nicer UI that powerpivot provi

  I have been looking into PowerPivot and concluded that for "self service BI" and ahoc buidling of cubes it has its uses. In particular I like the enhanced UI that you get from using PowerPivot rather than just using a PivotTable hooked up to an analysis services datasource. However it seems that hooking up PowerPivot to an existing analysis services cube is not a solution for "organisational BI". It is not always desireable to suck millions of rows into excel at once and the interface between PowerPivot and analysis services is very poor in my book. Hence the question is can an existing analysis services solution get the enhanced ui features that power pivot brings, withoout using powerpivot as the design tool? If powerpivot is aimed ad self service/personal BI then it seems bizare that the UI for this is better than for bigger/more costly analysis services solutions.

  I am creating a app wherein user shares some information. This data i am storing it in database through servlets i.e. i am calling my own servlets which will take data through url and store it in database. So i want other users of that same app to get notify that some information is available and in turn they will get the information that other user has updated. For this to work we can use polling or pusher. But polling will take lots of battery power. I have tried C2DM but its not working for me. So i am thinking for some other mechanism by which i can implement other than C2DM. Please suggest some way to work it. and e.g. if u have came across.

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • What the performance of Festival TTS vs FreeTTS on windows platforms?

  9 hours ago I had the wonderful idea to build up from scratch Festival TTS on Windows. In the meanwhile, and in less than 30 minutes, I build up the same source code on Linux, but only because tons of development tools were already installed :D Also this morning I downloaded FreeTTS. I started a simple testing project in less of 10 minutes, thanks to the Java power :D. Unfortunately FreeTTS does not provide immediate support for international mbrola languages, so this morning I thinked "it needs too much work"... Backing to Festival TTS on Windows, after many obstacles, and tons of wrong downloads, CYGWIN before, then "make" and other exotic C++ tools "forgotten" in the installation of CYGWIN, then Visual Studio 2008, then Windows Platform SDK 2008, but it lacks of System.h, so just now I am downloading Windows Server Platform SDK 2003, etc... So now, as I am yet here without having compiled a single line of damned C-- code, my question is: at least Festival TTS is a good choice on Windows for Java development?

• Disable system sleep during long builds

  From time to time I need to run a full build of the entire tool chain for our software on my development machine. To save on power my I've got my dev machine set to go sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity. Building the full tool chain can take up to an hour and I'll often just go to lunch. However, if I forget to disable sleep I can return to a sleeping machine with the build only partially complete. What I'm looking for is a way to automatically disable sleep while MSBuild is running. Does anyone know of a simple way of doing this?

• Using thread inter-communication to increase my server app's IO throughput; not sure how

  My server application creates a new thread for each incoming connection. Incoming requests are serialized in a BlockingQueue. There is one worker thread taking items from the queue, produce a response and send the response through socket. I have noticed a throughput issue: Currently, worker thread is responsible of sending the response message through socket, thus severely wasting processing power and throughput. I am considering: rather than sending the response itself, why not telling network IO threads to send the response? However, when I think about thread inter-communication, I cannot yet figure out how to approach it: Worker thread will produce a response, but how will it inform the response message to IO thread? Is there a standard/best practice? Thank you.

• Beginning VSTO development

  Hi, I'm quite confused with what are the necessary tools for VSTO develpment. Specifically I want to manipulate Excel 2003/2007 documents programmatically. I did quite a lot of VBA before, if you want to relate any answer to that. Few questions I have about VSTO: Can I use Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition C#/C++ for this? Do I need to have .NET framework installed? Does the resulting VSTO program need to have a copy of Office installed in the same system to run? Direct links to the relevant tools/plugins/IDE will be appreciated. Note: I'm totally new to VSTO and .NET but an Office power user. Have experience with COM programming. Thanks.

  In Java, constructors cannot be recursive. Compile time error: "recursive constructor invocation". Let's assume that we did not have this restriction. Things to keep in mind: The return type of a constructor is void. Since it is a void method you can't harness the complete power of recursion. A constructor can invoke itself (or any other constructor) using this(). But a "call to this must be first statement in constructor" We could use non local data between consecutive calls to still have some possible gain from recursive constructors. Would there be any benefit from allowing recursive constructors?

• Google chrome, native client support and development

  Hey guys, I would like to write a small C++ app and run it on chrome using the native client API. I have a few questions though: 1) I compiled the examples on Ubuntu and ran the code on firefox but can't run it on chrome (using version 5.0.342.7 beta) Do I need to install something? An extension/plugin? 2) I can't find a single online application I could run? Links anyone, I want to see the power of this thing without having to compile the code locally. • Better product to develop for, iPad or Android based tablet in a purely business related application

  Hey guys Just wondering what you'd suggest as the best platform for developing a business application for a tablet device. The application needs to be multitouch, have access to a maps API, a database on the device. It will not be going on sale in the app store or Androids market, it is purely for specific business task and not for the general consumer. Obviously the options seem to be iPhone OS and the iPad or Android and an Android tablet device. The form factor for the end product requires something in the region of 8 inch+ screen and enough processing power to provide a good experience for the end user. Any help would be much appreciated. • Which Ipod touch generation should I buy? 2nd or 3rd?

  I want to create games for Iphone/Ipod touch. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of money so I can buy only one device. Ipod is cheaper than Iphone, so I decided to bought Ipod touch. But I am afraid of buying 3rd generation - because it has more memory, more faster CPU, etc. And I think if I post my app on appstore - people with 2nd generation Ipod might have trouble with my app (because I was testing it on 3rd generation). But on the other hand - I am planning to create 3d/cpu demanding game - and it would be easy for me to implement it on device with more calculation power... What should I do in this situation?   Is their any profilers that support Silverlight? I have tried ANTS (Version 3.1) without any success? Does version 4 support it? Any other products I can try? • Drag and drop + custom drawing in Android

  I am working on something that needed custom drag-and-drop functionality, so I have been subclassing View, doing a bunch of math in response to touch events, and then rendering everything manually through code on the canvas in onDraw. Now, the more functionality I add, the more the code is growing out of control and I find myself writing a ton more code than I would expect to write in a high level environment like Android. Is this how it's done, or am I missing something? If I'm not doing anything fancy in the UI, the framework handles the majority of my interactions. Built-in controls handle the touches and drags, and my code is pretty much limited to business logic and data. Is there a way to leverage the power of some of the UI controls and things like animations while also doing some of it manually in the onDraw canvas? Is there an accepted standard of when to use one or the other (if indeed the two approaches can be mixed)?

• How can I use my multiple cored dedicated server to run my java application?

  I have a game built in a java environment and I use JVM. I have 4 cores @ 2.4Ghz and my server is only using one of those cores... I've tried and searched and I still have no guides to setup multiple cores to run the game like, say 1 core for running the character saving + loading, and 1 core for the server itself, and 1 core for a helper to help other cores that need more power. I don't even know if this is possible but this is all in java the operating machine is windows server 2003 and I've tried so hard I just don't know what to do. May someone please help me! • Direct video card access

  Guys, I am trying to write a class in C# that can be used as a direct replacement for the C# Bitmap class. What I want to do instead though is perform all graphic functions done on the bitmap using the power of the video card. From what I understand, functions such as DrawLine or DrawArc or DrawText are primitive functions that use simple cpu math algorithms to perform the job. I, instead, want to use the graphics card cpu and memory to do these and other advanced functions, such as skinning a bitmap (applying a texture) and true transparancy. My problem is, in C#, how do I access direct video functions? Is there a library or something I need?
