  Hi I have a JSON string that looks like this (Usingt Rails and a REST service) { person: { name:"Pepe", last:"Smith" hats:[ { team:"lakers", color:"purple"}, { team:"heats", color:"red" }] } } I want to be able to able to get that JSON, and save the Person to the database, but I want to save the "hats".. as a string to the database; without parsing it or anything like that i.e. I want to save this to SQL: hats = "[ { team:"lakers", color:"purple"}, { team:"heats", color:"red" }] }" Is there a way to do this in rails?

• Is there a way to create a step chart using the Google Charts API?

  I'd like to use the google charts API to create a step chart for my Rails application. Preferably using the annotated timeline Google has (since it has a nice wrapper plugin for rails): http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/annotatedtimeline.html However, there doesn't seem to be a way to create a step chart using the annotated timeline or any other chart in the Google API. I'm looking to make a plot like this: If there is no way to do this with the google API, is there an alternative graphing library that can handle such a task?

• Why do i get a circular reference exception when calling to_json on an ActiveRecord::Relation

  In Rails 3 (beta 3 on 1.8.7), when calling to_json on a relation i get a circular reference exception. Converting that relation to an array first, and THEN calling to_json works. Code That fails: Model.where().to_json (Where model is any model in your Rails 3 app) Code that works: Model.where().to_a.to_json This can be reproed on the console. Has anyone else run in to this? Is this expected?

  Hi all, I have some javascript making an ajax call in my Rails site: $.ajax({type: "PUT", url: url, data: { dummy: data }, complete: function(data) {}}); When Rails gets it, it throws back an ActionController::InvalidAuthenticityToken Error. I'd like to keep the protect_from_forgery stuff in there, if possible... But I'm at a loss for how can I pass the auth token from a javascript file? Can anyone help me out?

• Uninitialized content when trying to include ActionController::UrlWriter in model

• Create web application with ajax from the begining or add ajax later?

  I'm working on my first Ruby on Rails aplication and it's quite big (at least for me ;) - database has about 25 tables). I'm still learning Ruby and Rails and I never wrote anything in Javascript nor Ajax. Should I add Ajax to my application from the begining? Or maybe it will be better to add it latter? • Factory(:user) hits database?

  Playing around with factories, which I read weren't supposed to hit the database, allowing you to avoid having your controller specs interacting with the DB. But when I fire up the Rails console in test and use a factory to create a sample user, I noticed an actual user gets created in the database. Huh? (Using Rails 2.3.8 and Factory Girl 1.2.3.)

• Different values for Time.now when using activerecord

  I have this weird situation: When I do on rails console Time.now or Time.zone.now I get the same values (suppose they run at the sime time: 2014-06-05 23:38:06 -0300) But when I use Time.now in a query like: Match.where("datetime = ?", Time.now) it returns the time 3 hours ahead! .to_sql output: SELECT `matches`.* FROM `matches` WHERE (datetime = '2014-06-06 02:38:06') any thoughts on that? • In Ruby on Rails, the :id is only optional in routes.rb? How to tell optional vs not optional?

  In routes.rb map.connect ':controller/:action/:id' map.connect ':controller/:action/:id.:format' but then http://localhost:3000/foobars/alt will work too. The params are: {"action"=>"alt", "controller"=>"foobars"} so looks like :id is optional here. How can you tell it is optional vs not optional? Can you make it so that it is not optional in routes.rb?

• In rails whats the best way to get the site that a user came from? I am getting conflicting info.

  If i enter a url directly into the address bar of the browser, i get the following results: logger.debug ENV['HTTP_REFERER'] // => logger.debug request.referrer // => / So the first one gives me a blank result which is what I expected but the second gives me the root? Is this correct? It seems from the docs (http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionController/AbstractRequest.html#M000478) that they should return the same thing. And secondly, why does it return the root, if there was no referrer.

• Restricting Edit and Delete

  I want to be able to edit and delete resources myself, but not allow users of the application to do so. Is there an easy way of doing this in Rails? An incomplete solution would be just to remove the "delete" and "edit" buttons from the index view, but that doesn't disable their ability to do so via direct HTTP requests. • How to deploy jBPM 3.2.2 console on Oracle 10g iAS

  Hi! Does anybody have experience regarding deployment of the jBPM Administration Console on Oracle 10g iAS? I successfully deployed it using an .ear, security mappings working, I can even login to the console, Hibernate finds the JNDI datasource but it cannot find the TransactionManager. I see no log, only the exception thrown in the jsf page: Can anybody help me?
