• Oracle VM 3: New Patch Set! (or Mega Millions winner?...you decide!..)

  Today, my favorite number is 14736185 (despite the fact that it did not win me $249million in the MegaMillions lottery...or did it?)!  Why?  Because it is our latest patch release and it is chock-full of good stuff for the Oracle VM 3.0 user.  Oracle VM support customers can find it on My Oracle Support as patch number 14736185.   This can be installed on Oracle VM 3.0.x systems as an incremental patch on top of 3.0.3, so if you previously ran 3.0.3 GA or updated to 3.0.3 patch 1 ( build 150) this will just apply on top.  We're recommending you update to this patch set at your earliest convenience.  For more details, see below but also see Wim Coekaert's blog with related info here.   I'm developing an app that will be used to open and close valves in an industrial environment, and was thinking of something simple like this:- public static void ValveController { public static void OpenValve(string valveName) { // Implementation to open the valve } public static void CloseValve(string valveName) { // Implementation to close the valve } } (The implementation would write a few bytes of data to the serial port to control the valve - an "address" derived from the valve name, and either a "1" or "0" to open or close the valve). Another dev asked whether we should instead create a separate class for each physical valve, of which there are dozens. I agree it would be nicer to write code like PlasmaValve.Open() rather than ValveController.OpenValve("plasma"), but is this overkill? Also, I was wondering how best to tackle the design with a couple of hypothetical future requirements in mind:- We are asked to support a new type of valve requiring different values to open and close it (not 0 and 1). We are asked to support a valve that can be set to any position from 0-100, rather than simply "open" or "closed". Normally I would use inheritance for this kind of thing, but I've recently started to get my head around "composition over inheritance" and wonder if there is a slicker solution to be had using composition?

  I'm interested in reading PDF-format ebooks on my Apple iPad. I have half a gig of PDFs I want to transfer to it, from my PC. I'm familiar already with loading EPUB-format titles through iBooks – unfortunately, iBooks doesn't read PDFs so I am looking at using a third-party application. I know many such third-party media viewer applications for the iPad support download from web or email, but that's a hassle. I've heard iTunes 9.1 added support for USB File Transfer, specifically for iPad devices. How does USB File Transfer work in iTunes, for transferring files from my PC to my iPad? • Is Steam for Mac effectively running as superuser?

  When you download the client it does not weigh too much, and seems to do very little. Inside the app bundle there is a script that—upon inspecting the environment and deciding you're not running Linux—launches the client, which downloads the full support environment and resources. For this to happen (all of this is saved inside the bundle, the app bundle gets updated in this process) Steam wants Universal Access for Assistive Devices, and your password. Cacheable resources, preferences (like keyboard shortcuts), support files (like game hardware requirement lookup tables) live inside the bundle, not in ~/Library/{Application Support|Preferences|Cache}; games' data get dumped into ~/Documents/Steam Content. I'd describe myself as a bit OCD (which really says a lot), and I wouldn't care that much still. I'd go comb this hairy mess and find out where stuff is, when and if I need to, even if it's in an unfamiliar place; that does not actually tick me off. Well, a little bit. What makes me concerned is the way Steam needs both Access for Assistive Devices, and my password to run. The former gives it the ability to talk very intimately with running apps and the underlying system; while the latter (admin account) could very well give it and it's publishers unrestricted access to all my software, hardware and data. With publishers like Rockstar using scene NOCD cracks to publish their games on Steam, I'm not so sure I'm OK with this. I'd like more games made available for the MacOS X and all the pretty machines that run it, but this arrangement does not seem very Mac-like to me. It looks like Valve is going around system security measures and best practices, foregoing sandboxing, code signing, relatively sane structured organization; all the things that would appeal to someone who's no fun at parties at all, and will die alone, in his long dead mother's basement… wait. Right. Anyway. Can we get some input on Steam for Mac security at the end-user machine, from someone who understands how Accessibility API works, whether games distributed on Steam can read and write outside the user homefolder, collect data from other running apps, or similar?

• Re-enabling audio on an iMac

  Hello guys, I know Super User is not a 'tech support' forum, so I will try to make it short: my computer's sound does not work anymore. I have asked for support on the Apple board but I feel a bit on my own. To summarize, the Sound Panel of my iMac does not display any outgoing channel (headphones or internal speakers). It does not work on Windows either. Contrary to what it may seem, I have the feeling that it is not a hardware issue (and that GarageBand is somehow interfering). If you have an idea to solve the problem, please share. Making it work again is a lost cause without sending it back to Apple, so the question I'm asking is: What is the best workaround (cheap Firewire sound card?) for getting my sound back? Thanks.

• How to check Early Z efficiency on AMD GPU with Windows 7

  I have a game using DirectX 9, and a development station using Win 7 x64. I am still able to get access to another station with Vista x64 / dual booted with WinXP x86. I wanted to check early Z efficiency in the game and to my sadness all tools I have tried seem to be unable to perform this task: AMD PerfStudio AMD GPUPerfStudio 2 does not support DirectX 9 at all AMD GPUPerfStudio 1.2 does not install correctly on Windows 7. When I have tweaked the MSI package (a simple OS version check adjustment was needed), it complained the drivers I have do not provide needed instrumentation. The drivers old enough to support the GPUPerfStudio would most likely not be able to operate with my Radeon 5750 card (though this is something I am not 100 % sure, I did not attempt to try any older drivers, not knowing which I should look for) PIX PIX does not seem to contain any counters like this. It offers some ATI specific counters, but when I try to activate them, the PIX reports "PIX encountered a problem while attaching to the target program." I do not want to upgrade to DX 10/11 just to be able to profile the game, but it seems without the step I am somewhat locked with a toolset which is no longer supported. I see only one obvious options which would probably work, and that is using WinXP (or with a little bit of luck even Vista) station, perhaps with some older AMD card, to make sure GPUPerfStudio 1.2 works. Other than that, can anyone recommend other options how to check GPU HW counters (HiZ / EarlyZ in particular, but if others would be enabled as well, it would be a nice bonus) for a DirectX 9 game on Windows 7, preferably on AMD GPU? (If that is not possible, I would definitely prefer switching GPU to switching the OS, but before I do so I would like to know if I will not hit the same problem with nVidia again)

I found the following document: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929847 - How to enable computer-only authentication for a 802.1X-based network in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, and in Windows XP Service Pack 3 But unforunately the needed command "netsh wlan" is not available in Windows XP - "Note Windows XP SP3 and earlier versions of Windows XP do not support the netsh wlan command."   I work at a relatively small company, around 30 people and we are now looking into a solution that can handle: File sharing. Email server. Calendar support. Around 30 users. Accessible from external network. Support for Windows XP (and above), Mac OS 10.6.3 and Ubuntu clients. When it comes down to security we don't have the experience to comment on that. I guess the de facto standard is good enough for us. Sorry if this is formulated as a n00b question, because it is. =) Any kind of pointer in the right direction will be appreciated. • How to play an MKV 3D side-by-side video?

  I have a video in Matroska format (MKV, file extension .mkv), 3D half-SBS, where the 1280x720 frame shows the left-eye frame on the left and the right-eye frame on the right. I don't have a 3DTV, but I have NVidia 3D Vision: I tried to open it with PowerDVD 10 with no result (program hangs). With the same PowerDVD, I tried to play the Avatar 3D trailer downloaded from YouTube (MP4 format), but it now shows it the two frames. PowerDVD 10 is advertised to support 3D and 3D Vision. Why can't I play these videos? NVidia Stereoscopic player plays the Avatar trailer fine, but it doesn't support MKV.

• Big AdventureWorks2012

  Last week I launched AdventureWorks on Azure, an initiative to make SQL Azure accessible to anyone, in my blog post AdventureWorks2012 now available for all on SQL Azure. Since then I think its fair to say that the reaction has been lukewarm with 31 insertions into the [dbo].[SqlFamily] table and only 8 donations via PayPal to support it; on the other hand those 8 donators have been incredibly generous and we nearly have enough in the bank to cover a full year’s worth of availability. It was always my intention to try and make this offering more appealing and to that end I have used an adapted version of Adam Machanic’s make_big_adventure.sql script to massively increase the amount of data in the database and give the community more scope to really push SQL Azure and see what it is capable of.   The Batch Best Practices whitepaper has been updated and published to My Oracle Support with the latest advice and new facilities. Two of the more interesting updates are: Addition of a Bache Cache Flush - Just like the online, the batch component of the framework caches data. It is now possible to refresh the cache manually using a new batch jobs F1-FLUSH. This is particularly useful if you execute long running threadpool workers across many different batch processes (submitters). New EXTENDED execution mode - A new specialist mode has been introduced for sites that use a large number of submitters (concurrent threads) and are experiencing intermittent communication issues in the threadpoolworker. This mode uses Oracle Coherences Extend mode to allow submitters to be allocated to threadpoolworkers via proxy connections. It differs from CLUSTERED mode in that a submitter can be explicitly allocated to a specific threadpoolworker via a proxy connection. This mode is only used for specific situation and customers should continue to use CLUSTERED mode gemerally. • Can you play Halo 2 and Halo 3 on an Xbox360 Arcade?

  I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 and Halo 3? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

• Linux to Solaris @ Morgan Stanley

  I came across this blog entry and the accompanying presentation by Robert Milkoski about his experience switching from Linux to Oracle Solaris 11 for a distributed OpenAFS file serving environment at Morgan Stanley. If you are an IT manager, the presentation will show you: Running Solaris with a support contract can cost less than running Linux (even without a support contract) because of technical advantages of Solaris. IT departments can benefit from hiring computer scientists into Systems Programmer or similar roles.  Their computer science background should be nurtured so that they can continue to deliver value (savings and opportunity) to the business as technology advances. If you are a sysadmin, developer, or somewhere in between, the presentation will show you: A presentation that explains your technical analysis can be very influential. Learning and using the non-default options of an OS can make all the difference as to whether one OS is better suited than another.  For example, see the graphs on slides 3 - 5.  The ZFS default is to not use compression. When trying to convince those that hold the purse strings that your technical direction should be taken, the financial impact can be the part that closes the deal.  See slides 6, 9, and 10.  Sometimes reducing rack space requirements can be the biggest impact because it may stave off or completely eliminate the need for facilities growth. DTrace can be used to shine light on performance problems that may be suspected but not diagnosed.  It is quite likely that these problems have existed in OpenAFS for a decade or more.  DTrace made diagnosis possible. DTrace can be used to create performance analysis tools without modifying the source of software that is under analysis.  See slides 29 - 32. Microstate accounting, visible in the prstat output on slide 37 can be used to quickly draw focus to problem areas that affect CPU saturation.  Note that prstat without -m gives a time-decayed moving average that is not nearly as useful. Instruction level probes (slides 33 - 34) are a super-easy way to identify which part of a function is hot.

  WARNING Retrying Bulk Insert for file:sqlldr due to Communication Error:256 I am running my engine on Linux and am receiving an intermittent message "WARNING Retrying bulk insert for file: sqlldr due to communication Error: 256" The engine seems to have completed successfully, but it is not clear if this error caused some of the forecast to not complete. It is also not clear what caused the error. Generally if you see only the WARNING of it, it means that next retries of the same load request have eventually succeeded and so the run a a whole is not affected. In order to know more about what happens, look for .log/.bad files left in the engines bin directory or possibly a quote of them within the specific engine log that had the issue.  The sqlnet.log file may also have some information about it and perhaps at the database server side there may be some log/alert regarding what happened.  Look at the alert.log. In general it could be that the database server/network was over loaded at the time and somehow the connection was rejected/failed/aborted either due to specific setting on concurrent connections/sessions or inadvertently due to glitch in network/os/hardware. If this repeats and becomes more frequent during the run you should look further into it as mentioned above. You can also track this using either SQL*Trace or java.util.logging.  - Globally enable logging by setting the oracle.jdbc.Trace system property java -Doracle.jdbc.Trace=true - Client Side Tracing: Your SQLNET.ORA file should contain the following lines to produce a client side trace file: trace_level_client = 10 trace_unique_client = on trace_file_client = sqlnet.trc trace_directory_client = <path_to_trace_dir> Server Side Tracing: To enable server side tracing, use the following parameters: trace_level_server = 10 trace_file_server = server.trc trace_directory_server = <path_to_trace_dir> Tracing Levels: The following values can be used for TRACE_LEVEL* parameters:     16 or SUPPORT — WorldWide Customer Support trace information     10 or ADMIN — Administration trace information     4 or USER — User trace information     0 or OFF — no tracing, the default Additional information is readily available via the web.

  Today I found out that the job which would have been a promotion for me went to an outside candidate. The position is for a systems admin on our LAN team. I have been working on the helpdesk here for almost two years with another two years experience working it prior. While we are the first tier support we also work in AD, monitor and update certain servers and set up and deploy Windows/Mac images for those we support. What I am looking for here is what can I do to better myself to inside/outside places to move up this ladder? I take what I can from my job - working on projects that I can learn from - but what projects should I be volunteering for? What can I do for myself outside to make me a more viable candidate for a systems admin?

• Stackify Gives Devs a Crack at the Production Server

Why hasn’t anyone thought of that before?” Matt Watson, CEO of Kansas City, Mo.-based startup Stackify, was telling me that the 10-person company is getting ready to launch its product in August (it’s in beta now) that will give developers an app-centric look into production servers so they can support and troubleshoot apps and fix bugs. Of course, this hasn’t happened in the past because of the security concerns of IT administrators, and a decided lack of expertise on the part of developers. Stackify installs on a server and acts like a proxy for developers, collecting data about the environment, discovering all the applications, scanning for config file changes, and doing server monitoring. “We become the central point that developers can see everything they need to know about their applications,” he said. “Developers can look at the files that are deployed, and query databases in a safe way.”  In his words:“The big thing we’re hoping is just giving them (developers) visibility. Most companies want to hire the junior developers that they pay $50,000 a year right out of college to do application support and troubleshooting and fix bugs, but those people don’t have access to production servers to troubleshoot. It becomes very difficult for them to do their job, so they end up spending all of their day bugging the senior developers, the managers or the system administrators to track down this stuff, which creates a huge bottleneck. And so what we can do is give that visibility to those lower-level people so that they can do this work and free up the higher-level people so they can be working on the next big thing.”Stackify itself might just prove to be the next big thing.

• AFXR problem using gradwell secondary DNS

  Hi All I use Gradwell.com to provide secondary DNS but I keep getting e-mails along the lines of the following saying that it's not working: You have asked us to provide a secondary DNS service for the following domain(s) Unfortunately, the primary DNS server(s) you specified are not permitting the necessary zone transfers from our servers, or they are not answering "SOA" queries for your domain correctly. I have gone through the support procedure and they weren't that helpful. They have suggested the following: Our secondline team have suggested setting the AXFR to use anouther machine. This will ensure that the transfer is not locked down to one machine and should allow any machine to make the request I don't really know what AFXR is and I only have 1 production machine so I can't set the AFXR to use another one! In previous support correspondence we confirmed that I am allowing transfers to the correct IP and that I have the correct ports open on the firewall. I am running Windows Server 2003. What can I do to try and get these zone transfers working? Thanks
