• Brother Printer not picking up A5 size paper

  I have Brother HL 5040D printer . I want to print some stuff on A5 size. I have done setting on MS word. There is small tray in Brother Printer manin tray where i can put any samll paper and then move the clamps so that it fits the paper. But when i give print command the printer tries to pick up paper but is unable to do so. Then it gave paper light means it can't load the paper. What should i do

• Wireless networking on Gnome on Ubuntu 9 / 10

  So here's my problem: I have some netbooks (ASUS eee, and ACER Aspire Ones) that I've been tasked to set up as kiosk machines, locked up tight for normal users. I am a command-line, server man, so this gnome malarkey is all a bit new to me. I found a lovely 9.04 kiosk livecd that installs and runs exactly as I want it to, but I can't get the wireless working. So I dropped on a full 10.4 distro, and wireless works straight out of the box (so hardware is good) - all I needed to do was right-click on the network connection icon, enter my SSID and password (WPA/WPA2) and away it went, perfect. Further investigation on 10.4 distro shows that /etc/networking/interfaces is virtually empty (just auto lo iface lo inet loopback in it), even after I have set up the wireless thru the gnome taskbar applet (is that the right word?). So where does gnome / ubuntu store the network settings to bring the blasted wireless connection up, and what do I need to do on the kiosk version to get wireless running?

• Interactive Data Language, IDL: Does anybody care?

  Anyone use a language called Interactive Data Language, IDL? It is popular with scientists. I think it is a poor language because it is proprietary (every terminal running it has to have an expensive license purchased) and it has minimal support (try searching for IDL, the language, right now on stack) . I am trying to convince my colleagues to stop using it and learn C/C++/Python/Fortran/Java/Ruby. Does anybody know about or even care about IDL enough to have opinions on it? What do you think of it? Should I tell my colleagues to stop wasting their time on it now? How can I convince them? Edit: People are getting the impression that I don't know or use IDL. Also, I said IDL has minimal support which is true in one sense, so I must clarify that the scientific libraries are indeed large. I use IDL all the time, but this is exactly the problem: I am only using IDL because colleagues use it. There is a file format IDL uses, the .sav, which can only be opened in IDL. So I must use IDL to work with this data and transfer the data back to colleagues, but I know I would be more efficient in another language. This is like someone sending you a microsoft word file in an email attachment and if you don't understand how wrong that is then you probably write too many words not enough code and you bought microsoft word. • Is there a way to allow continuous scrolling in Adobe Reader?

  I am having to read through a MASSIVE (1000+ page) PDF specification in Adobe Reader X (version 10). It has always bugged me that if you scroll to the edge of a page, the Reader automatically jumps to the top of the next page. Is there away to cut this off so that when I reach the bottom of one page, the edge of the page meets the top of the next page and I can see a half-page of both the last and next page? I know that MS Word can and does behave this way. Can I change a setting to scroll the document in this manner in Adobe Reader?

• Thread and two dimensional array in objective C?

  Hey, guys, I am just starting to wrap my head around objective C and I am doing a little project on Iphone. And I just encountered a weird problem. I had to deal with images in my program so I have a lot local variables declared like temp[width][height]. If I am not using NSThread to perform image processing, it works all fine. However, if I use NSThread, it'll keep giving me EXC_BAD_ACCESS on whenever I try to access a 2-D array declared like temp[widht][height]. So I have to allocate memory from heap in order to have a 2-D array. That'll solve the problem but I still don't get it. My first thought would be stack over flow, but it worked all fine with one thread. I just don't get it.

Assuming that name of my domain is my.domain.com, I want to use following rules: If BOTH sender and recipient address is from my.domain.com, message should be rejected (sendmail server only relays messages between my internal exchange server and outside word, so sending messages between users from my.domain.com always occour on exchange server and never on sendmail server) If recipient list contains AT LAST ONE invalid address, whole message should be rejected (even for valid recipients addresses) If sending server uses HELO message with bogus domain name (other than domain of this server), message should be rejected Any server attempting to send mail to dedicated address (f.e. • OOP Design of items in a Point-of-Sale system

  I am implementing a Point-of-Sale system. In the system I represent an Item in three places, and I wounder how I should represent them in OOP. First I have the WarehouseItem, that contains price, purchase price, info about the supplier, suppliers price, info about the product and quantity in warehouse. Then I have CartItem, which contains the same fields as WarehouseItem, but adds NrOfItems and Discount. And finally I have ReceiptItem, thats contains an item where I have stripped of info about the supplier, and only contains the price that was payed. Are there any OOP-recommendations, best-practices or design patterns that I could apply for this? I don't really know if CartItem should contain (wrap) an WarehouseItem, or extend it, or if I just should copy the fields that I need. Maybe I should create an Item-class where I keep all common fields, and then extend it to WarehouseItem, CartItem and ReceiptItem. Sometimes I think that it is good to keep the field of the item and just display the information that is needed.

• Good software to take a blog and format it for printing

  I have much of my family's doings on a Blogspot blog. I would like to print this out in a nice book. The actual printing I plan to just send to CostCo as Photo Prints. But I need some kind of software to reformat the posts into printable paper size sheets. I would like it if I could retain my blog's background and let me adjust how the pictures fit on the screen. Now I could do all of this with MS Publisher or Word. But I am curious if there is any other software out there that does this nice and easy. Anyone know of some cool software that will do this for me? Free is nice, but I am not above paying a modest fee for cool software. I would prefer to avoid another website that will charge for the printing as well as the converting.

• Fn + Right Arrow on MacBook Pro does not work as END Key for SuperUser web site

  Hello everyone, I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows. I have tried that Fn + Right arrow on Mac works as "END" key on Windows -- which makes cursor move to the end of line, for most application like Word for Mac -- I have tried it works. But I tried Fn + Right Arrow does not work for current question input box of SuperUser. I am wondering how to solve this issue and why? • Is it possible to use best_in_place with typeahead from twitter bootstrap?

  Basically, I am using best_in_place in my rails webapp to let users edit their profile info in place. The thing is, I would like users to be presented with a typeahead form for certain entries.. Here's what I'm working with: <p>College/University: <input type="text" class="span3" style="margin: 0 auto;" data-provide="typeahead" data-items="8" data-source='["University of Pennsylvania","Harvard","Yale","Princeton","Cornell","Brown","Columbia","Dartmouth"]'></p> This gives me a working form box with typeahead. However, I want to be able to wrap this in best_in_place with something like <%= best_in_place @student, :education %> so that users only see the typeahead form when they click on the text, and upon clicking away from the box or hitting enter the selection is stored in the database. Is there a reasonably easy way to do this?

  i hope i'm just doing something wrong here. Ideally i'm trying to open the connection, open a transaction execute a ton of prebuilt sqlstatements (with parameters) against this connection then close the connection. ideally all in the same batch. It's easy enough to wrap this all in a for loop, however i'd like to use the forEach function of the list generic to set the connection as it'll probably be faster than my implementation of calling List.Item(i) in the loop but i get some strange errors. • Nano suddenly putting in weird characters when I type

  I am using a shell and editing a file in nano (similar to pico). A short while ago, it started doing this thing where if I type: $query = "select" * from topics where id='' "; and then I hit Backspace and try to stick the letter 'a' into the id='' part, it changes it to: $query = "select * from koala_topics where id='a='' "; and the cursor jumps around to a few spaces before. Also if I type print At the start of a new line, and then I think "Oh I should have added a tab" and I go back and try to add a tab, it adds a tab AND 2 spaces, and if I put the cursor through the word print, it turns into printnt. Some other weird things have happened too. I uninstalled nano using yum (which is how I installed it), and then re-installed it, thinking that would get me clean preferences (in case that was the problem) but it doesn't fix it.

• UEC - Can the Cluster Controller and Storage Controller be seperate systems?

  My department is implementing an Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud. I have done the testing and am quite comfortable with the 4 pieces, CC/SC, CLC, WS, NC. Looking at various documents below it appears the the Storage Controller and Cluster Controller (eucalyptus-sc and eucalyptus-cc) are always installed on the same system. • How to brute force keepass with certain letters and characters

  I forgot my password to keepass but I know pretty much what letters and the order they go in, but I'm not sure if I put anything before or after my "main" password or capitalized anything. I tried every combo I could think of but I still can't get in (invalid/wrong key error). I also enabled use master password and key file(on my flash drive). My question is is there a way to brute force keepass with only certain letters and characters in order? An example of the password would be userab12c3d45 sometimes with quotes or underscores at the beginning and end. Or Is there a word list generator that will do this?

• Invalid Argument IE 8 jQuery

  Hi, I have this particular script that runs so that the flash elements don't show up on top of my slide out navigation. This redraws that flash element with wmode as opaque and so it shows up under the navigation. Works perfectly with Chrome and FireFox but not with IE. In IE I get an Invalid Argument in jquery.min.js code 0 Line 103 char 460. Can anyone help me as to why? If I comment out the second line of code inside the function then there is no error, but then doesn't work in FireFox. • Is Flash typically slow on Linux?

  Specifically, I'm running Mint 8 (Helena). I'm extremely new to Linux, and was searching for a solution that was user-friendly and GUI oriented. The box won't be used for much other than web browsing and word processing. Anyway, it runs relatively smoothly, except for Youtube videos... especially full-screen, which runs at like 1 FPS, and even after closing, slows Firefox to a crawl until I restart it. I'd seen an xkcd comic on the matter, but regarded it as a joke until now. Is this actually a problem? Are there any remedies I can try to smooth the applications?

• Manually start scheduled launchd job

  On our Mac OS X (10.6) Server we have setup several backup scripts that are controlled by launchd and launched at specific times. For this we have defined StartCalendarInterval and this all works very well. Now it happens that I would like to start one of these jobs out of schedule, but this does not start the job (but also does not give an error/warning): sudo launchctl start org.job-label The manpage of launchtl states that start is intended to test on-demand jobs, no word of scheduled jobs. Is there a way to kickstart scheduled jobs?

• javaEE application layout

  I've been tasked with writing a new webapp in javaEE, which will be a first for me. I'm familar with the java language, but all of my previous projects have been in .net. So I've downloaded netbeans and I'll probably be using Hibernate, and started digging in. My question is, what's the best way to lay out a javaEE app? Should all data access go through netbeans? I was told to use webservices as much as possible so it's easy to pull data in and out of the system, and I've read through tutorials that create webservices in a seperate web application, as compared to the javaEE enterprise application. Is that really the way it's supposed to work? Just trying to wrap my head around this as compared to what I'm used to in .net. Thanks!

• 2 questions about drag and drop with Javascript

  Hello, I'm trying to be able to drag random highlighted text or images on a random page that is not written by me, thus I cannot simply wrap the text in a div and make it draggable. Is there any way to get highlighted text or images on a random page, like say Yahoo, and drop it into a container that can recognize what was being dropped into it (like content and content-type) without it even being an explicitly declared draggable? I've been playing with jQuery, but can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, David

• Memory leak in WPF app due to DelegateCommand.

  I just finished desktop apps written in WPF and c# using MVVM pattern. In this app I used Delegate Command implementation to wrap the ICommands properties exposed in my ModelView. The problem is these DelegateCommands prevent my ModelView and View from being garbage collected after closing the view. So it stays larking until I terminate the whole application. I profile the application I find it’s all about delegatecommand that keeping the modelview in memory. How could I avoid this situation and is this in nature of mvvm pattern, or it’s about my implantation of the pattern?. Thanks

• nyroModal Window on flash background

  I've got a Flex App running at 100% width and 100% height. I've also got the app div's z-index to 0. In Firefox this looks fine, everything works. In Chrome however, nyroModal's fade-in/transparent overlay does not show up, and only the second swf is visible overtop the background flash. Am I missing anything here? Is this a known issue with Chrome?

• Folder Permissions Apache

  I have a site that will need to store file uploads by the user once logged in. Currently I have a folder with permissions opened up, (777), because that was the only way I could get mkdir() to work. When the user uploads a file, the application creates several directories based on the user, in this directory then eventually stores the file. Couple of questions: How do I setup the permissions on each of these folders and sub folders so that only logged in users to my site have access to them? Is this even possible? Is there a more secure way of storing .pdf, word docs, and text files?

• Can Acer Aspire Revo (Atom 330) be used with two monitors simultaneously?

  I'm so attracted to Acer Revo for the price & the look. As long as I can work on two monitors simultaneously, I'll be happy. Not planning to do heavy video editing or gaming. Occasional movie streaming would be fine. Will mainly use it to do trading, lots of word processing, some photo editing, connecting with friends. Anyone has experience using Revo with 2 or more monitors? The spec says it has VGA and HDMI output but Acer sales person over the phone told me it can support one monitor only..??

• Forms Authentication and Login controls

  I am upgrading a website written using ASP.NET 1.1 and the logic for the login page includes verifying the credentials, calling FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie() and populating the Session with the user information. I am updating this page to use Login controls and the Membership API and am trying to wrap my head around the concepts that have been changed. Most of the samples I see do not do anything on the login button event handler, so is the logic of setting the cookie abstracted out into the control? Also, how do I check if a user is logged in or not on other pages. Does it still store user information using the Session? How do I check if a user belongs to a particular role or not (Earlier, I would look in the Session object to do something like this) Is the Session a bad way of storing user info? Thanks
