Set up a GUI managed firewall for other machines?

What ways are there of setting up a firewall for traffic routed for other machines whose rules can be managed by a GUI? Can GUFW do it? FireStarter? (or should that be avoided because it is supposedly no longer updated?) *By filtering, I'm mean the traffic I am setting rules up for is not destined for this computer. It is either from or to other computers on my LAN. Say, for (a simplified, hypothetical) example: I have an ethernet connection at my dorm that I have plugged into eth0. It gets an address of 192.168.1.185 and I also have 192.168.185.0/24 routed to me, so I don't have to do any NAT. I have a hub attached to my second ethernet port (eth1) with a few Windows computers and I give addresses out of my 192.168.185.0/24 block with DHCP. How can I use my Ubuntu box to block incoming connections from eth0 that are being routed to my Windows computers and let through just a few specific ports (so fellow students can't see what files my Windows boxes are sharing via SMB)?

Can't find AVD or SDK manager in Eclipse

Seems like I'm having some problems after updating my android sdk tools and platform-tools using the sdk manager. The problem is that, after updating, I found that the avd or sdk options in the windows dropdown menu in eclipse are gone! And, I can't find any option to create an android project from file-new projects any more. I tried removing the ADT from eclipse and the software site "https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/" from "available software sites" and then reinstalled the ADT from "https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/" using help-install new software. The installation was successful, but I still don't have any option for shortcuts to the SDK manager or the AVD in eclipse, and neither can I create a new android project. By the way, the android perspectives are not gone, they are still here. Also, I can manually open the avd and sdk manager from the directory where I have installed them. Can anyone please show me a workaround? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problems rendering pages in FF and IE

I am having a constant trouble with pages not rendering correctly between FF and IE. not my code below. "Select an Account" should be next to the drop down such as: Select an Account Type: "then my form" however my form goes to the next line when I want it next to "Select an Account". Ethernet Connection Unavailable

I'm running Ubuntu Server 12.04 on a laptop with an Intel NIC (driver e1000e). When I connect the ethernet port to the internet (college network, DHCP) it works out of the box. Now I'm trying to connect it to a networked USRP (if you want to know what it is). A friend of mine managed to do this in his laptop (running regular Ubuntu 12.04) just by setting up a new Wired connection in the Network Manager with appropriate addresses. However, when I do the same, no wired connections are available. The output of nmcli -p dev is =========================================== Status of devices =========================================== DEVICE TYPE STATE ------------------------------------------- wlan0 802-11-wireless connected eth0 802-3-ethernet unavailable but the cable is connected to the device and the device is powered up. Any idea how to solve this? UPDATE: After stopping the network-manager service, setting up the connection manually and starting the service again, it now detects the ethernet connection. However, the device still can't receive data and doesn't answer to pings. UPDATE 2: As suggested I tried using a cross over cable but the result is exactly the same. However, I found out that connecting the device to the dock (as opposed to directly to the laptop) works fine. I know that the ethernet port in the laptop works fine, because connecting to the network through it works. Is it possible that the port in the laptop doesn't support Gb Ethernet (because that's what the device requires) but the one in the dock does?

Hello, I am attempting to return a image from a server using Silverlight 3. The server returns the Response stream like this: context.Response.ContentType = imageFactory.ContentType imgStream.WriteTo(context.Response.OutputStream) imgStream.Close() context.Response.End() On the Silverlight client I am handling the stream like: Dim request As HttpWebRequest = result.AsyncState Dim response As HttpWebResponse = request.EndGetResponse(result) Dim responseStream As IO.Stream = response.GetResponseStream() I want to take that stream and open the browsers save dialog, one option I have explored is using the Html.Window.Navigate(New Uri("image url")) and this opened the correct browser default dialog but it is not an option because I need to send extended information(e.g. XML) to the server through the HttpRequest.Headers.Item and the Navigate doesn't allow this. How can I take a Response Stream and force the default browser Save dialog to appear from the Silverlight Application without using the Html.Window.Navigate(New Uri("image url"))?

different small js files per page VS. 1x site-wide js file?

Different pages of my site have different js needs (plugins mainly), some need a lightbox, some dont, some need a carousel, some dont etc. With regards to pageloading speed should i option 1 - reference each js file when it is needed: so one page might have: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.easydrag.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/colorbox/jquery.colorbox-min.js"></script> and another have: <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/typewatch.js"></script> option 2 - combine and compress into one site_wide.js file: so each page would reference: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/site_wide.js"></script> there would be unused selectors/event listeners though, how bad is this? I would include any plugin notes/accreditations at the top of the site_wide.js file

X-notifier doesn't work in Chromium Browser

It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem? unreachable subnet in one direction

I'm unable to route traffic to a subnet in my home. Here's my topology: INET <- Router A <- Router B <- WIFI AP where: Router A - ARRIS TG862G/CT (from comcast) - WAN DHCP, LAN 10.0.0.99 Router B - Linksys WRT400N with DD-WRT - WAN 10.0.0.12 , LAN 10.0.1.1 I was able to use DD-WRT to configure a static route for the 10.0.1.x network back to the 10.0.0.x network. But I'm not sure if i can do the reverse on the ARRIS router and was looking for suggestions on how to fix that. I've set things up this wasy because I am using OpenDNS to mange internet content for my kids and of course I wasn't able to configure DNS to my liking on Router A either. So at present I'm using Router A on 10.0.0.x to provide a private unfiltered WIFI AP (no ssid broadcast) that I use for netflix only and then I use router B to provide a filtered WIFI AP for the rest of my WIFI devices on 10.0.1.x. However I would like to be able to connect to my 10.0.1.x devices from the internet via dynamic dns; but I can't see anything behind router B this way. Thoughts?

Virtualization in Ubuntu 11.10

Since Ubuntu 11.10 use a new kernel, it's very difficult to have a decent support for virtualization. VirtualBox doesn't support guest additions for ubuntu 11.10, so I can't copy to and from my ubuntu desktop and windows, which I absolutely require, plus FreeBSD seems not to be able to use DHCP without guest additions. Virt-manager instead gives an error on launch: Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon. Problems with a from CSS

I am trying to create a fairly basic form with in my maincontent. I am sure I am coding things incorrectly and it is driving me crazy. Note my code. I get extremely wide vertical spacing in IE 7 and the bacground color between the field sets does not work correctly. All is good in FF. mounting without -o loop

Hi, I have written a dummy (ram disk) block device driver for linux kernel. When the driver is loaded, I can see it as /dev/mybd. I can successfully transfer data onto it using dd command, compare the copied data successfully. The problem is that when I create ext2/3 filesystem on it, I have to use -o loop option with the mount command. Otherwise mount fails with following result: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on mybd, missing codepage or helper program, or other error What could be the problem? Please help. Can't connect to Wireless Network - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS & Sabrent A111N USB Dongle

I've been trying to connect to this network for quite some time. I can't directly connect to the router with a Wire, but can access the Router with other wireless devices without any issues. I had previously tried several other Wifi nic's but none of them would load properly. Today, i went and bought a new (supported) Sabrent A111N USB Dongle, which said explicitly that it works with Linux 2.4 +. I popped the Dongle in, and low-and-behold it immediately said that there were Available Wireless Connections. I selected my connection and tried to connect, but it just loops constantly while saying Wireless Disconnected then attempts to connect again over and over. ifconfig and iwconfig both show my device in a ready and working state. However, iwlist wlan0 scan says that there are no results found. I don't get it... At one point, I could see the CPU in the DHCP client list under the router, but it doesn't fully make the connection (something about a timeout?). Any help would be appreciated. Preventing symbols from being stripped in IBM Visual Age C/C++ for AIX

I'm building a shared library which I dynamically load (using dlopen) into my AIX application using IBM's VisualAge C/C++ compiler. Unfortunately, it appears to be stripping out necessary symbols: rtld: 0712-002 fatal error: exiting. rtld: 0712-001 Symbol setVersion__Q2_3CIF17VersionReporterFRCQ2_3std12basic_stringXTcTQ2_3std11char_traitsXTc_TQ2_3std9allocatorXTc__ was referenced from module ./object/AIX-6.1-ppc/plugins/plugin.so(), but a runtime definition of the symbol was not found. Both the shared library and the application which loads the shared library compile/link against the static library which contains the VersionReporter mentioned in the error message. To link the shared library I'm using these options: -bM:SRE -bnoentry -bexpall To link the application, I'm using this option: -brtl Is there an option I can use to prevent this symbol from being stripped in the application? I've tried using -nogc as stated in the IBM docs, but that causes the shared library to be in an invalid format or the application to fail to link (depending on which one I use it with).

Subversion (SVN) equivalant to Visual Source Safe (VSS) "Share"

Hi, I have a scenario in my project where I need to share a single file between multiple projects in the same solution. Back in my Visual Source Safe days (Shudder), I'd use the "Share" option to allow me to make changes to this file in any of the locations. Then once it was checked in I could guarantee that the other locations will get the update. I'm trying to do this in Subversion but I can't seem to find the option anywhere. I do know about svn:externals however I'm only interested in sharing a single file between multiple locations. Does anyone know how to do this in Subversion? Thanks

Running GUI application in the Windows service mode

I'm writing a server running as a Windows service that by request invokes Firefox to generate a pdf snapshot of a webpage. I know it is a bad idea to run a GUI program in service mode, but the server nature of my program restricts from running it in the user mode. Running a user-level 'proxy' also is not an option, since there might be no interactive user logged-in on the machine with the server running. In my experiments Firefox successfully produced pdf when the service was running under a user account that was already logged-in. Obviously it didn't work in other cases: for Local System and user accounts that weren't logged-in. Under LocalSystem with 'Allow service to interact with desktop' option enabled I could see the Firefox started that reports that it's unable to find a printer. Since it wouldn't be practical to require an opened user session for the pdf server to run, is there any workaround for this except running the whole thing from a virtual machine?

Ubuntu 12.04 Network Manager: unable to save manual setting to set up a static ip

I am fairly familiar with setting up servers, and ubuntu is generally my flavor of choice, but I just installed 12.04 desktop and I am seeing some behavior in network manager that is really puzzling. The network connection works fine if I leave it set on dhcp, but I would like a static IP address for my new web server. When I go into network manager and edit the connection for the one and only NIC I can select MANUAL from the dropdown menu but as soon as I do the Save button becomes greyed out. Even after filling out all fields for the connection it is still grey and I am unable to save the static IP connection information. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping there is just some new setting that I am unaware of.... On another note, if I stop the network manager and go edit the interfaces file (and the appropriate hosts/routes/dns files), I do get a static ip address assigned and I can contact my server from the outside, however, the server cannot find the internet. Can't ping even its own ip... I can ping the loopback interface though. I'm really confused on this one. Hoping someone can offer some help.

Update options to jQuery slider via form

I have a jQuery Slider, and I am trying to make it more dynamic by adding three input fields: min max step I want to take those fields and then onblur update my slider options. I read that you can set options like this: $('.selector').slider('option', 'max', 7); And do the same for min,step, etc along with the other options. I tried playing with it yesterday, but I'm not sure how to get it to update. I am using a form with no submit button, so just change on blur. I know I would get the .val() of the input and set it to a variable then would it be: $('.selector').slider('option', 'max', var_here); Any thoughts?

automake and custom rpath

I have to ship a third-party library with an application. Because I don't want to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH by hand or require any wrapper script I want automake to set a custom rpath. Unfortunately libtool has its own -rpath option and adding -Wl,-rpath,/foo/bar to LDFLAGS only results in g++: unrecognized option '-rpath' because libtool seems to get confused with the command line options. The same happens with the alternative form -Wl,-rpath -Wl,/foo/bar. Is there any way to specify a custom rpath without libtool interference?

Is there a way to tell git-status to ignore the effects of .gitignore files?

I have configured numerous .gitignore files to filter out many different unwanted files from a set of about 6,000 untracked files. I want to do 'git add .' when I've got my filtered list looking the way I want it. But, then I want to disable the .gitignore filters temporarily to see what got left behind, and make sure there was nothing important accidentally filtered. I know that git-clean includes an option to ignore .gitignore files - is there a similar option for git-status? I could go through and delete all the .gitignore files, do the check, then restore them, but it seems there should be an easier way?

How to connect ethernet on ubuntu (with auto-detection by Ubuntu)

Do I need to post another thread for the same? If so, sorry. Yes, I saw that it's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with ethernet, and the exact same problem, that is no internet even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to express my issue. English is not my mother tongue. I'm a total beginner with ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. For 2 weeks, I've kept reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that as a beginner, I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files (eg: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm confused between putting figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem?? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1. I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number? no clue again) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

Making Image On Top?

How do I make an image appear on the top of a page and not showing up in the listing post of my upcoming website: www.xternalit.co.uk? Example: when i type: abcdefg then "more option" then below "more option", id have an image. When the user click on "read more" they will see "abcdefg the an image. I dont want that. I want when they click on "read more" they would see the image first and then "abcdefg". Is this possible with a plugin or tweaking of my template? Cheers! Messaging strategies to connect different systems

I have a system to handle Applications online and a different system to send SMS/Email notifications to applicants on completion using web services. I can't guarantee the availability of the SMS/Email gateway. Option 1 After an application is complete, place a message on a JMS queue. A Message Driven bean receives the message and make a call for the web service, if it fails leave the message on the queue. I suspect (please correct if incorrect) that if the gate way is offline the continuosly try to send the message which might use up valuable resources. Can the above option be refined are are there any other messaging strategies that can be used?
