• Real time updates in php for a pbbg. (Php, JavaScript, and html)

  I am trying to create a PBBG (persistent browser based game) like that of OGame, Space4k, and others. My problem is with the always-updating resource collection and with the building times, as in a time is set when the building, ship, research, and etc completes building and updates the user's profile even if the user is offline. What and/or where should I learn to make this? Should it be a constantly running script in the background Note that I wish to only use PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Mysql but will learn something new if needed. Cron jobs or the Windows equivalent seem to be the way, but it doesn't seem right or best to me.c

  I have lyrics for about 60% of my song collection. The filename of the lyrics is the same as the file name of song with zzz_ prepended to the filename and .lrc as the extension. C:\Songs\album\song.mp3 C:\Songs\album\zzz_song.lrc I currently print the file names like so for /r "C:\Songs" %%f in (*.mp3 *.flac) do ( echo %%f ) How can I create a boolean in the if statement within the for loop as a check on the existence of lyrics files? I was thinking something like if exist zzz_%f echo zzz_%f.lrc but zzz_%f prepends zzz_ to the full file path (ex. zzz_C:\Songs\album\song.mp3) and .lrc is appended to the existing extension

• Creating a library of classes in php - how to handle the library root location?

  I am about to create a collection of classes in php which are interrelated. Now I would like to include files using their absolute path, ie If I were in '/com/mysite/licences/Generator.class.php' I would like to include files like this: include '/com/mysite/lib/Utils.class.php' I don't want to include like this, I think it is confusing and ugly include '../licenses/Utils.class.php' This works ok, unless 'com' is not in the root of public_html. I assume I will need some sort of prefix to append to each file LIBRARY_ROOT that hold the location of 'com' in the current filesystem. So it might look like this include LIBRARY_ROOT.'com/mysite/lib/Utils.class.php' What is the best way to do this?

  I am pretty new to rails and basically I want to make a user registration form. I am currently using rails 3.2.3 Basically I want to make basic routes like user/register on top of basic REST route for user.   Consider the following C code segments. Segment 1: char * getSomeString(JNIEnv *env, jstring jstr) { char * retString; retString = (*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env, jstr, NULL); return retString; } void useSomeString(JNIEnv *env, jobject jobj, char *mName) { jclass cl = (*env)->GetObjectClass(env, jobj); jmethodId mId = (*env)->GetMethodID(env, cl, mName, "()Ljava/lang/String;"); jstring jstr = (*env)->CallObjectMethod(env, obj, id, NULL); char * myString = getSomeString(env, jstr); /* ... use myString without modifing it */ free(myString); } Because myString is freed in useSomeString, I do not think I am creating a memory leak; however, I am not sure. The JNI spec specifically requires the use of ReleaseStringUTFChars. Since I am getting a C style 'char *' pointer from GetStringUTFChars, I believe the memory reference exists on the C stack and not in the JAVA heap so it is not in danger of being Garbage Collected; however, I am not sure. I know that changing getSomeString as follows would be safer (and probably preferable). Segment 2: char * getSomeString(JNIEnv *env, jstring jstr) { char * retString; char * intermedString; intermedString = (*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env, jstr, NULL); retString = strdup(intermedString); (*env)->ReleaseStringUTFChars(env, jstr, intermedString); return retString; } Because of our 'process' I need to build an argument on why getSomeString in Segment 2 is preferable to Segment 1. Is anyone aware of any documentation or references which detail the behavior of GetStringUTFChars and ReleaseStringUTFChars in relation to where memory is allocated or what (if any) additional bookkeeping is done (i.e. local Reference Pointer to the Java Heap being created, etc). I think it's because Id was specified in the route collection (Global.asax). Is it possible to tell MVC that UserId should map to Id without changing it in the Global.asax

• How can I display a list of three different Models sortable by the same :attribute in rails?

  I have a Campaign model which has_many Calls, Emails, and Letters. For now, these are each a separate Model with different controllers and actions (although I would like to start to think of ways to collapse them once the models and actions stabilize). They do share two attributes at least: :days and :title I would like a way to represent all the Calls, Emails, and Letters that belong_to a specific Campaign as a sortable collection (sortable by :days), in a way that outputs the model name and the path_to() for each. For example (I know the below is not correct, but it represents the kind of output/format I've been trying to do: @campaign_events.each do |campaign_event| <%= campaign_event.model_name %> <%= link_to campaign_event.title, #{model_name}_path(campaign_event) %> end Thanks so much. BTW, if this matters, I would then want to make the :days attribute editable_in_place.

  I have been delved in C++ world for a while, but now I'm in .NET world again, VB and C# and I wondered if you have a class that represents a collection of something, and you want the ability to use this in a foreach loop, etc... is it better to implement IEnumerable and IEnumerator yourself or should you inherit from the List<T> where T is the object type in it's singular form? I know in C++ for example, inheriting from a container is considered a bad idea. But what about .NET.

• How to declare and use the name of a function from a json object?

  Hello, I have a json object collection of geo locations that I build in the server. Each of those objects has two properties: "marker" and "onClick". Marker is for storing a Google Maps marker object and the onClick stores the name of the function to be called when that marker is clicked on the map. When I'm pushing the location objects into an array using javascript in the client side, I create the markers and assign them to each location object within the array. My problem is that when I bind the marker with the onClick property, the function won't be found in the DOM and get an error. Is there a way to declare a property in a json object for using it on an event binding? Hope I could explain it clearly, if not, please let me know. Thanks!

• Which parallel sorting algorithm has the best average case performance?

  Sorting takes O(n log n) in the serial case. If we have O(n) processors we would hope for a linear speedup. O(log n) parallel algorithms exist but they have a very high constant. They also aren't applicable on commodity hardware which doesn't have anywhere near O(n) processors. With p processors, reasonable algorithms should take O(n/p log n/p) time. In the serial case, quick sort has the best runtime complexity on average. A parallel quick sort algorithm is easy to implement (see here and here). However it doesn't perform well since the very first step is to partition the whole collection on a single core. I have found information on many parallel sort algorithms but so far I have not seen anything pointing to a clear winner. I'm looking to sort lists of 1 million to 100 million elements in a JVM language running on 8 to 32 cores.

  Say I have an object: struct Foo { int bar_; Foo(int bar) bar_(bar) {} }; and I have an STL container that contains Foos, perhaps a vector, and I take // Elsewhere... vector<Foo> vec; vec.push_back(Foo(4)); int *p = &(vec[0].bar_) This is a terrible idea, right? The reason is that vector is going to be storing its elements in a dynamically allocated array somewhere, and eventually, if you add enough elements, it will have to allocate another array, copy over all the elements of the original array, and delete the old array. After that happens, p points to garbage. This is why many operations on a vector will invalidate iterators. It seems like it would be reasonable to assume that an operation that would invalidate iterators from a container will also invalidate pointers to data members of container elements, and that if an operation doesn't invalidate iterators, those pointers will still be safe. However, many reasonable assumptions are false. Is this one of them?

  hi, I have a basic IDE for a user control i am building. It allows me to add labels to a panel and move them around, like a very basic form designer. When I add the controls to the panel at runtime, I'd like to give the control a unique name string like how the VS IDE tracks the controls it already has and adds an extra number when it creates the default control name. I have tried checking the controls collection each time a new control is added, but wasnt sure if there was a good string comparison method to return a name with a unique number on the end that hasn't been used yet.

• vb.net more performance for moving objects

  I have the mission to make a small game for a school project. Pictures boxes, moved by a timer for walking enemies.If there are around 5 or 6 moving picture boxes at the form, my application get troubles and lags. After I kill some enemies (remove them from the Controls Collection of the Form/Panel) It come back smooth. I think the loop of the enemy movement is too complicated but I don't know how to make that simpler.   just want some advice on "best practice" regarding multi-threading tasks. as an example, we have a C# application that upon startup reads data from various "type" table in our database and stores the information in a collection which we pass around the application. this prevents us from hitting the database each time this information is required. at the moment the application is reading data from 10 tables synchronously. i would really like to have the application read from each table in a different thread all running in parallel. the application would wait for all the threads to complete before continuing with the startup of the application. i have looked into BackGroundWorker but just want some advice on accomplishing the above. Does the method sound logical in order to speed up the startup time of our application How can we best handle all the threads keeping in mind that each thread's work is independent of one another, we just need to wait for all the threads to complete before continuing. i look forward to some answers

  I know you can bind in the code-behind, but I don't quite understand how it works if you want to declare it within the controls tag. This is for a custom collection. I thought it was just Datasource="<%# MyCollection %" Where MyCollection is an exposed property of the class in the code behind? MyCollection{ get{ return _MyCollection;}} Something like that. But it doesn't seem to work that way, so can I not bind this way, or am I missing something?

  I have a collection of span elements. In the code I have a global variable that represents the "selected" object. Using the click event when a span is clicked I reset the object's class, reset the global variable, then set the object to the variable and change its class (to make it "highlighted").
