• Linux - Create ftp account with read/write access to only 1 folder

  Hey guys.... I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. • Safe deployment of ASP.Net applications

  Hi All, I have an asp.net app that I want to deploy safely (with as little down time possible). I would love to do something like blue green deployment but without the need for a second web server. So, I know I can use load balancing, etc but I need a quick and cheap approach. I was thinking of doing something like: Setting up another website (copy of original) in IIS, currently I use host headers to direct traffic across sites). I could then view the new site locally until the site is totally online (due to NHibernate start up and various other high intensity tasks this takes a while). Once site 2 is totally started I would then change host headers around giving me a much much smaller down time. So my question is. Has anyone done anything like this? Will IIS restart my app pool or application when changing host headers (making this useless)? Any other options? Thanks for your help all. Guido

• OpenGL render vs. own Phong Illumination Implementation

  Hello: I have implemented a Phong Illumination Scheme using a camera that's centered at (0,0,0) and looking directly at the sphere primitive. The following are the relevant contents of the scene file that is used to view the scene using OpenGL as well as to render the scene using my own implementation: ambient 0 1 0 dir_light 1 1 1 -3 -4 -5 # A red sphere with 0.5 green ambiance, centered at (0,0,0) with radius 1 material 0 0.5 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 10 1 0 sphere 0 0 0 0 1 The resulting image produced by OpenGL. The image that my rendering application produces. As you can see, there are various differences between the two: The specular highlight on my image is smaller than the one in OpenGL. The diffuse surface seems to not diffuse in the correct way, resulting in the yellow region to be unneccessarily large in my image, whereas in OpenGL there's a nice dark green region closer to the bottom of the sphere The color produced by OpenGL is much darker than the one in my image. Those are the most prominent three differences that I see. • how to find a good data center?

  At my start-up, we're getting to the point where we should be hosting our servers at a data center. I'd appreciate any tips and tricks y'all can offer on finding a reputable place to colocate our racks. Are there any Web sites with customer reviews of data centers or should I just be asking around at techie events? Are unlimited bandwidth plans a gimmick or becoming the norm? Is it worth establishing a redundant set of machines at a second data center from Day One? Or just do offsite back-ups? Thanks for your suggestions.

• Port Forwarding: Why do my local sites on 80 work but not those on 8080?

  I setup my router to forward port 80 to the PC hosting my web site. As a result, I am able to access this url (Don't bother clicking on it, it's just an example): http://my.url.com/ When i click on this link, it works: http://localhost:8080/tfs/web/ I also forward port 8080 to the same web server box But when I try to access this url I get the eror "Page Cannot be displayed:" http://my.url.com:8080/tfs/web/ I fwded port 8080 the same way I fwded port 80. I also turned off Windows Firewall, in case it was blocking port 8080. Any theories why port 80 works but 8080 does not?

• Any best practices with feedback colours?

  I have a few that I think are correct. These are background colours for messages. ERROR: red; INFO: blue; SUCCESS: green; NOT IMPORTANT INFO: yellow Have I got the blue and yellow around the wrong way? Any hex values that are a de facto standard for these? I am curious considering web development, but I think the answers will be agnostic. Here is an interesting thought (I'm sure I've read about it in an article). What colours would the errors be on Target's website, considering all their branding is red?

• Original sender is not correctly identified when spam is forwarded

  I have a forwarding rule with Postfix that forwards all messages to my main email address. When a spam message is sent to one of my emails, it is forwarded but the sender is shown as being the forwarding domain, not the spammer's domain. Real example: mywebsite.com is hosted on Linode. [email protected] sends an email to [email protected] the mail is forwarded to [email protected] my email hosting (anotherwebsite.com) sees it's spam and sends a message to [email protected] and Linode reports a TOS violation. I have modified my postfix settings so I now use RBL, but if a message goes through, it may happen again. How can I prevent this to happen again? Is there some settings to change on Postfix so the original sender is correctly identified? Thanks Stephan

• Multi sim GSM modem or alternative

  I'm trying to administer the SMS trafic of my businesss centrally through a web portal. In Europe (except UK) we don't have a numbers/SMS trafic provider like Twilio or Clickatell, nor any build in way to administer the SMS traffic for a number via http, so I will have to buy the long numbers and administer the SMS traffic myself. For this I was looking into a hardware solution for hosting all my SIM cards - I have like 400 sims cards (= numbers). I saw that GSM modems might fit in but they don't seem to scale up very well. Could you recommend me a GSM modem? If this is not the best way to approach this, what would my alternatives be? Thanks in advance

• Routing to various node.js servers on same machine

  I'd like to set up multiple node.js servers on the same machine (but listening on different ports) for different projects (so I can pull any down to edit code without affecting the others). However I want to be able to access these web apps from a browser without typing in the port number, and instead map different urls to different ports: e.g. 45.23.12.01/app - 45.23.12.01:8001. I've considered using node-http-proxy for this, but it doesn't yet support SSL. My hunch is that nginx might be the most suitable. I've never set up nginx before - what configuration do I need to do? The examples of config files I've seen only deal with subdomains, which I don't have. Alternatively, is there a better (stable, hassle-free) way of hosting multiple apps under the same IP address?

• How to sync a folder on a remote computer to a server on a domain

  We have a small remote office that often share data with us. I learned that the data is shared as a email attachment, but that obviously leads to versioning hell and overriding. I am looking for a way for then to synchronize a folder directly on our main office domain controller. I personally use LiveMesh, but I would like a tool that is synchronized to our server directly without a 3rd party hosting the data, since we already have an online backup service taking care of the offsite backup. What enterprise class tool would let us synchronize a folder from a remote computer that is out of our domain, into our the file server of our domain? The synchronization has to be two-way, e.g.: Someone from the remote office will create an invoice. Someone from our office will review it and make modification to it. The remote office need to see the change. Our server is on Windows 2003.

  Hi, Our requirement is to send weekly newsletters to our website customers. For which we wanted to have local hosted SMTP server in our office. We are not using SMTP server provided by website hosting provider, as we wanted to reduce the network traffic and avoid IP blocking due to bulk mails. We are sending newsletters on weekly basis from our local SMTP server. But due to some reasons, some emails are going to spam and some are not reaching to customers and sometimes there are bounce messages to follow bulk email guidelines (mainly from Gmail). Can you please suggest me, how to achieve my problem. I also wanted to know what type of technology generally Linkedin or banks uses to send notifications emails to all its customers. • prevent search engines indexing depending on domain

  We have a dedicated server with a hosting company with a couple of dozens of webs in it. It happens that the nameservers (EG: ns1.domain.com, ns2.domain.com) ip's are coincident with some client webs, let's say webclient1.com and webclient2.com Problem is that for a certain searches in google, some results are showing up like ns1.domain.com/result instead of webclient1.com/result which is pretty wrong and annoying for our clients. Actually if you type in the browser ns1.domain.com or ns2.domain.com it will load some pageclients instead. Is there any way to prevent google to track those results only in case the robots are coming to check ns domains? It may be not correct to ask this as well, but why is it happening? is it a result of a bad server configuration? I'm pretty new on these matters, so thank you in advance for any help!

• capistrano still asks for the 1st password even though I've set up an ssh key???

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? Some excerts from config/deploy.rb are: set :use_sudo, false ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "id_rsa")] default_run_options[:pty] = true thanks PS. • It is possible to use the Exchange 2010 web client with an Exchange 2007 mail server?

  We are evaluating our options to upgrade our Windows SBS 2003 server. We are considering Windows SBS 2008, which comes with Exchange 2007 and an extra Windows Server 2008 Standard license. If we also bought Exchange 2010, could we install it on the Windows Server 2008 Standard machine and use the web client in combination with the Exchange 2007 server (that would be hosting the mailboxes)? Is that a supported server role for Exchange 2010? I remember reading about so called front-end server configurations, but I have no experience with that. Thanks!

• How can I remove HTTP headers with .htaccess in Apache?

  I have a website that is sending out "cache-control" and "pragma" HTTP headers for PHP requests. I'm not doing that in the code, so I'm assuming it's some kind of Apache configuration, as suggested by this question (you don't really need to go there for this question's context) I don't have anything in my .htaccess files, so it's gotta be in Apache's configuration itself, but I can't access that, this is a shared hosting, I only have FTP access to my website's directory. Is there any way that I can add directives to my .htaccess files that will remove the headers added by the global configuration, or otherwise override the directive so that they're not added in the first place? My website is a PHP MySQl driven site which hase got site scrapping for more than 10 websites and near about 8-10 API pursing and some about 150 mb dat file reading(from local hard drive), and also one rss pursing,Live graph from other sites, geo map from Google,Map api from Google and so on. one widget which real-time result for any one who chose the same. so my question is which is best option for me. actually I am considering softlayer cloud as they are pretty cheap and more facilities than rackspace. another option is a dedicated server which has 2 single core processor, 4GB ram and 250GB sata II. with 100 mbps uplink. so please tell me which will be the best option?? I heard that dedicated server has lots of limitations than cloud. but for cloud they uses SAN for storage so I am afraid the reading proces for database may be bit slower...and their basic plan ram is only 1 GB.

• Dual slider control with custom skin

  Hi All, I'm currently trying to create a page for users to select two points from a range, using a slide control. The first point in the range is when an alert will be sent to the user, the second point is a max limit. What I would like to do is have the bar colored green from the 0 point to the first slider point, then orange between the two sliders, and lastly red from the second slider up to the other end of the bar.   Is there a way to run Apache2 or Nginx with PHP on the iPhone? Im surprised so little info is available on this topic, as it seems quite interesting to host websites on an iPhone. Consider slow 3G connections or no 3G at all, and you want to demonstrate some webapplication you wrote... hosting them on the iphone would be an awsome way to fix the speed issues with the mobile network speeds. For the Ipad there are several addoptions available, nothing much usable on iphone / nginx apache2 search terms anywhere :( I want to host some websites on my iphone for demonstration purposes. So when im "out the office" Ill be able to very fast browse some websites that I host on the Iphone. there is no decent information out there, does anyone have a lead on how to do this? My question is specific to if nginx or apache2 can be run on the iphone, it would be nice if PHP would run on it too

• Why are my files in /var/lock and where did they just go?!

  I am hosting a website on Debian 5.0 & Apache2. Today one of my websites was down, Apache said it couldn't find the directory. I located the files and the whole site once in /var/www/site was now /var/lock/site. All the files were present. I was confused, but figured I'd just move it back. mv /var/lock/site /var/www All looked fine... Except that only the directories moved and the files appear to be lost! I am working on restoring from backups but I would really love to know what happened and where my files went (the backups are a few days old). Thanks for your help!

• What ports do I need open for IMAP connections

  I'm developing a web application that connects to an IMAP mailbox and fetches emails as part of it's functionality. However now that I've put the app on my web hosts server I'm getting the following error: Cannot connect to Gmail: Can't connect to gmail-imap.l.google.com,993: Connection timed out After checking with my hosting provider they told me outgoing connections on port 993 are blocked. Is there anyway around this? Otherwise I need to upgrade to a dedicated server :S

• IIS 7 AppPool logs an error after recycle due to inactivity

  We have Windows 2008 RS Server running IIS hosting an ASP.NET site. This morning there was a weird sequence. First a notice that the AppPool was being recycled due to inactivity: "A worker process with process id of '6896' serving application pool 'xxxx' was shutdown due to inactivity. Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed." This makes sense and jibes with out timeout settings, but 30 seconds later we see: "A process serving application pool 'xxxx' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '6896'. The process exit code was '0xc0000005'." I found an older KB article that explains a condition where this might happend on IIS6 due to permission issues, but am curious what might cause this on IIS7.5, especially since we are not seeing it regularly.
