Checking data of all same class elements

I need the code to check the data-name value of all instances of .account-select. Right now it just checks the first .account-select element and not any subsequent ones. The function right now is on click of an element such as John Smith, it checks the data-name of the .account-select lis. If the data-names are the same, it does not create a new li with the John Smith data. If no data-names are equal to John Smith, then it adds an li with John Smith. ''' </summary> ''' ''' <param name="value">The object to validate.</param> ''' ''' <param name="name">The variable name of the object.</param> ''' ''' <exception cref="ArgumentNullException">If <paramref name="value"/> is <c>null</c>.</exception> Sub ValidateNotNull(ByVal value As Object, ByVal name As String) If value Is Nothing Then Throw New ArgumentNullException(name, String.Format("{0} cannot be null.", name)) End If End Sub My question is, is it proper to call this ValidateNotNull (which is what I would call it in C#) or should I stick with VB terminology and call it ValidateNotNothing instead? Also, in my exception, is it proper to say "cannot be null", or would it be better to say "cannot be Nothing"? I sort of like the way I have it, but since this is VB, maybe I should use Nothing. But since the exception itself is called ArgumentNullException, it feels weird to make the message say "cannot be Nothing". Anyway, I guess it's pretty nitkpicky, just wondered what you folks thought.

I've used procedural for sometime now and trying to get a better understanding of OOP in Php. Starting at square 1 and I have a quick question ot get this to gel. Many of the basic examples show static values ( $bob-name = "Robert";) when assigning a value, but I want to pass values... say from a form ( $name = $_POST['name']; ) class Person { // define properties public $name; public $weight; public $age; public function title() { echo $this->name . " has submitted a request "; } } $bob = new Person; // want to plug the value in here $bob->name = $name; $bob->title(); I guess I'm getting a little hung up in some areas as far as accessing variables from within the class, encapsulation & "rules", etc., can $name = $_POST['name']; reside anywhere outside of the class or am I missing an important point? Clustered index - multi-part vs single-part index and effects of inserts/deletes

This question is about what happens with the reorganizing of data in a clustered index when an insert is done. I assume that it should be more expensive to do inserts on a table which has a clustered index than one that does not because reorganizing the data in a clustered index involves changing the physical layout of the data on the disk. I'm not sure how to phrase my question except through an example I came across at work. Assume there is a table (Junk) and there are two queries that are done on the table, the first query searches by Name and the second query searches by Name and Something. As I'm working on the database I discovered that the table has been created with two indexes, one to support each query, like so: --drop table Junk1 CREATE TABLE Junk1 ( Name char(5), Something char(5), WhoCares int ) CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX IX_Name ON Junk1 ( Name ) CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_Name_Something ON Junk1 ( Name, Something ) Now when I looked at the two indexes, it seems that IX_Name is redundant since IX_Name_Something can be used by any query that desires to search by Name. So I would eliminate IX_Name and make IX_Name_Something the clustered index instead: --drop table Junk2 CREATE TABLE Junk2 ( Name char(5), Something char(5), WhoCares int ) CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX IX_Name_Something ON Junk2 ( Name, Something ) Someone suggested that the first indexing scheme should be kept since it would result in more efficient inserts/deletes (assume that there is no need to worry about updates for Name and Something). Would that make sense? I think the second indexing method would be better since it means one less index needs to be maintained. I would appreciate any insight into this specific example or directing me to more info on maintenance of clustered indexes.

Problem with WHERE columnName = Data in MySQL query in C#

I have a C# webservice on a Windows Server that I am interfacing with on a linux server with PHP. The PHP grabs information from the database and then the page offers a "more information" button which then calls the webservice and passes in the name field of the record as a parameter. So i am using a WHERE statement in my query so I only pull the extra fields for that record. I am getting the error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException:Invalid column name '42' Where 42 is the value from the name field from the database. my query is string selectStr = "SELECT name, castNotes, triviaNotes FROM tableName WHERE name =\"" + show + "\""; I do not know if it is a problem with my query or something is wrong with the database, but here is the rest of my code for reference. Protected and Private methods

I'm reading through Beginning Ruby and I'm stuck at the part about private and protected methods. This is a newbie question, I know. I searched through SO for a bit but I couldn't manage to find a clear and newbie-friendly explanation of the difference between private and protected methods. The book gives two examples, the first one for private methods: class Person def initialize(name) set_name(name) end def name @first_name + ' ' + @last_name end private def set_name(name) first_name, last_name = name.split(/\s+/) set_first_name(first_name) set_last_name(last_name) end def set_first_name(name) @first_name = name end def set_last_name(name) @last_name = name end end In this case, if I try p = Person.new("Fred Bloggs") p.set_last_name("Smith") It will tell me that I can't use the set_last_name method, because it's private. All good till there. However, in the other example, they define an age method as protected and when I do fred = Person.new(34) chris = Person.new(25) puts chris.age_difference_with(fred) puts chris.age It gives an error: :20: protected method 'age' called for #<Person:0x1e5f28 @age=25> (NoMethodError) I honestly fail to see the difference between the private and protected methods, it sounds the same to me. Could someone provide me with a clear explanation so I'll never get confused about this again? I'll provide the code for the second example if necessary.

"Order By" in LINQ-to-SQL Causes performance issues

I've set out to write a method in my C# application which can return an ordered subset of names from a table containing about 2000 names starting at the 100th name and returning the next 20 names. I'm doing this so I can populate a WPF DataGrid in my UI and do some custom paging. I've been using LINQ to SQL but hit a snag with this long executing query so I'm examining the SQL the LINQ query is using (Query B below). How do we access the class variable outside the class' definition? Why does it always append newline characters at the end of the string? How do we strip it? Hey, I'm having troubles optimizing this Levenshtein Distance calculation I'm doing. I have a person object, which can have unlimited number of first names. So the first names are another object. ie person --- name --- name --- name What I want to do is write an nhiberate query using which will get me a person who has certain names. so one query might be find someone whose names are alison and jane and philippa, then next query may be one to find someone whose names are alison and jane. I only want to return people who have all the names I'm search on. So far I've got ICriteria criteria = session.CreateCriteria(typeof (Person)); criteria.CreateAlias("Names", "name"); ICriterion expression = null; foreach (string name in namesToFind) { if (expression == null) { expression = Expression.Like("name.Value", "%" + name + "%"); } else { expression = Expression.Or( expression, Expression.Like("name.Value", "%" + name + "%")); } } if (expression != null) criteria.Add(expression); But this is returning every person with ANY of the names I'm searching on, not ALL the names. I serially collect information from forms into arrays like so: list = {"name" : "John", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Canada", "color" : "blue"}; identifier = "first_round"; list = {"name" : "Harry", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Germany"}; identifier = "second_round"; I want to combine them into something (I may have braces where I need brackets) like: list_all = { "first_round" : {"name" : "John", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Canada", "color" : "blue"} , "second_round" : {"name" : "Harry", "email" : "[email protected]", "country" : "Germany"} }; so I can access them like: alert(list_all.first_round.name) -> John (Note: the name-values ("name", "email", "color") in the two list-arrays are not quite the same, the number of items in each list-array is limited but not known in advance; I need to serially add only one array to the previous structure each round and there may be any number of rounds, i.e. "third-round" : {...}, "fourth-round" : {...} and so on.) Ultimately, I'd like it to be well-parsed for JSON. I use the jquery library, if that helps.
