  • What are the prerequisites for learning embedded systems programming ?

    I have completed my graduation in Computer engineering. We had some basic electronics courses in Digital signal processing, Information theory etc but my primary field is Programming. However, i was looking to get into Embedded sytems programming with NO knowledge of how it is done. However, i am very keen on going into this field. My questions : what are the languages used to program embedded system programs ? Will i be able to learn without having any basics in electronics ? any other prerequisites that i should know ?

  • What's a good library to do computational geometry (like CGAL) in a garbage-collected language?

    I need a library to handle computational geometry in a project, especially boolean operations, but just about every feature is useful. The best library I can find for this is CGAL, but this is the sort of project I would hesitate to make without garbage collection. What language/library pairs can you recommend? So far my best bet is importing CGAL into D. There is also a project for making Python bindings for CGAL, but it's very incomplete.

    When using the Spring 3.0 capability to annotate the a scheduled task, I would like to set the fixedDelay as parameter from my configuration file, instead of hard-wiring it into my task class, like currently... @Scheduled(fixedDelay=5000) public void readLog() { ... } Unfortunately it seems that with the means of the Spring Expression Language (EL) @Value returns a String object which in turn is not able to be auto-boxed to a long value as required by the fixedDelay parameter.     I have done a couple research jobs in Bio-informatics and I have used Matlab for them. Matlab had a lot of powerful tools and was easy to use. I did thinks with genome sequencing and predicting metabolic pathways. I am wondering what other people think is best? or there might not be one specific language but a few that lend themselves best to Bio-informatics work that is math heavy and deals with a large amount of data.

I also create a lot of web services which are consumed via AJAX applications. Do these technologies really help you in speeding up development times? Do you still have to build the database or object code first?

  • Java Developers: Is Ant still in the "main stream" for builds? Do we push new developers to learn it?

    We have been slowly replacing batch command files (windows .bat) which were simply jarring up the classes compiled in the developers IDE, with more comprehensive Ant builds (i.e. get from CVS, clean compile, jar, archive, email, etc.) I've spent a lot of time learning (and debugging issues) with Ant, so I'm most comfortable using it for these tasks. But I wonder if Ant is still in as wide usage as it was when I first started learning, or whether "the world has moved on" to something newer (and maybe slicker). (I've started to see more Maven build stuff distributed, which I've never used, for example.) The practical import of this question, is whether I push new developers to learn Ant, or whether they should be learning something else for builds? I'm never too on top of the trends, so it would be great to hear from other Java developers what they think is the best build tool, and what they think new developers should be learning.

    Basically, I know how to create graph data structures and use Dijkstra's algorithm in programming languages where side effects are allowed. Typically, graph algorithms use a structure to mark certain nodes as 'visited', but this has side effects, which I'm trying to avoid. I can think of one way to implement this in a functional language, but it basically requires passing around large amounts of state to different functions, and I'm wondering if there is a more space-efficient solution.
