• Watson Ties Against Human Jeopardy Opponents

  In January we showed you a video of Waton in a practice round against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Last night they squared off in a real round of Jeopardy with Watson in a tie with Rutter. Watson held his own against the two champions leveraging the 90 IBM Power 750 servers, 2,880 processors, and the 16TB of memory driving him to his full advantage. It was impressive to watch the round unfold and to see where Watson shined and where he faltered. Check out the video below to footage of Watson in training and then in action on Jeopardy. Pay special attention to the things that trip him up. Watson answers cut and dry questions with absolute lighting speed but stumbles when it comes to nuances in language–like finis vs. terminus in the train question that Jennings answered correctly. • Error building main Guest Additions Module while installing VirtualBox guest additions

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 Guest on Ubuntu 12.04 Host using VirtualBox. Everything is from repository and no direct install. When I install the guest additions, the below error is shown in the console. Before running the command I mapped the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in the Guest. The closest I could get is this article which says to install the latest version of VirtualBox (not the one from the repository). Is there any alternate solution? sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.1.12 Guest Additions for Linux......... • Final Man vs. Machine Round of Jeopardy Unfolds; Watson Dominates

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”.   The latest version of VirtualBox is out - version 3.2.  It is the first release as Oracle VirtualBox and there are a lot of new features.  Many of these I see directly impacting the Oracle VDI solution in upcoming releases (just my guess, of course), and I am updating my notebook as I write this. Er... OK - Done!There are enough features that they warrant you taking a look at this two-page VirtualBox Community Bulletin.pdf.  No point in me restating them.If you and your organization haven't tried VirtualBox, or you haven't looked at it in a while, you owe it to yourself to give this a run.  This is small, simple, powerful, software that allows you to do way more than most people would ever need in hosting a Virtual machine on you local machine.  I routinely will do a demo on a two-year-old Macbook running OS X locally, plus a Solaris 10 VM running the Sun Ray server, and a Windows XP VM and hang a couple Sun Rays off of it - and the performance is stellar.You can subscribe to the mailing lists and get access to the Beta releases as they come out as well, if you are into 'bleeding edge'.40,000 downloads a day is the current rate (before this new release), but it will jump for sure now.  Might as well join in!

• Running 64 bit Ubuntu distribution from 32 bit Ubuntu

  Related to this question How do I run qemu with 64bit processor on a 64bit machine?, I'm trying to run latest ubuntu 11.10 64bit distribution under Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit using qemu on a core2duo (64 bit cpu) machine, using following qemu parameters with no success. Error under qemu: "This kernel required an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropiate for your CPU" Isn't qemu suppose to emulate a 64 bit machine? • high performance with xen, vmware or virtualbox

  I was wondering which is the best method to go about if I want to play win based games. I do not want to go with the dual boot method as this will cost me time to restart, login and run a os to do my work or pass the time, and some of my apps rely on win and my graphics to run. for example Daz3d, Photoshop, Flash etc. Now I read about HVM(hardware virtual machines) and then I know about the 3D virtualisation of VMware and VirtualBox. How ever the 2 later virtualise the 3D not using the full power of the GPU. So this option wont perform perfect for latest games like D3. I was wondering if anyone have experience in HVM(like xen if i am not mistaken) and tried something similar to access the full power of the GPU and successfully run newer games and other products relying on the GPU? Will be the first time setting up a HVM, no experience in this so don't know what to expect. This will help a lot as I do not want to revert back to win or as mentioned do dual boot.

• Questions about XNA

  I've read tons of different threads about XNA, but I still have some questions. First of all: I have 2 years of experience programming and C# is my main language, so XNA would fit perfectly for me, but I have some concerns. People mentioned that C# has a performance loss compared to C++. Is this true? XNA only supports DirectX 9. I found the ANX framework which is pretty similar to XNA but it is capable of DirectX 11. Would this be a good alternative ? Because I'm worried about the performance loss of C#, I searched for a C++ framework and found SFML. It's based on C++ but can be integrated into C#. I already have some experience with UDK, but I am really interested in creating more by myself ( lighting physics etc ). I didn't start yet, what would you recommend me to use / learn ? I am going to create a first person shooter (3D) and I have plenty of time for this. My aim is realtime lighting, realtime global illumination, image-based reflections etc. I want to develop for Windows. Edit: I found something interesting: OpenTK. It supports the latest version of OpenGL which is on the same level as DX11 (if my knowledge is correct). It makes use of mono.

  If you found a new surprise extension added to Firefox after the June Patch from Microsoft, then you are likely to be rather unhappy right now. Join us as we show you how to remove the Search Helper extension from your browser. An Unexpected Addition to Your Extensions You may be wondering what the new mysterious extension that showed up is for. Its’ purpose is to help the Bing Toolbar better integrate with your browser. Unless you have the Bing Toolbar installed you really do not need this cluttering your browser up. So how do you get rid of it? Removing the Extension In order to remove the extension you will need to navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\Search Helper Once there delete the “firefoxextension folder”…that is all there is to it. If you want to remove the search helper add-on for Internet Explorer then delete the “SEPsearchhelperie.dll file” while you are here. Note: You may need to have administrator rights in order to delete the folder. No more Search Helper Extension! If you are unhappy about this update being snuck into your system, following these instructions will remove it.
