  What is Java? In very short words, Java is a programming language that let you make an application that can be run on different operating systems, no matter we are talking about Windows, Mac OS, Linux or even embedded devices, such as RaspberryPi. When you compile a Java program, instead of getting a binary output as you get on other programming languages, you'll get a Java intermediate code, called Java bytecode. This is interpreted at run time, by a virtual machine that is specifically for the hardware and operating system you are using. What Java do i need? There are 5 major versions of Java: Java SE(Standard Edition) - this is what I'll use on most of my tutorials. Most of the examples will run on Java 6, but for others you'll need Java 7. Java EE (Enterprise Edition) - used for enterprise development Java ME (Micro Edition) - for running Java on mobile and different embedded devices such as PDAs, TV set-top boxes, printers, etc. Java Embedded - for some embedded devices such as Raspberry Pi, where the resources are limited JavaFX - to develop rich content User Interfaces. This is also something that will use a lot. More detailed information can be found on Oracle's website If you just want to run java applications you'll need the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) installed. If you want to program and create new applications, then you'll need the JDK (Java Development Kit).  How to check if Java is already installed? From command line, if you are on Windows, or from Terminal on Mac enter the following: java -version You should get something like this, if you have java installed on your system: java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) Note: your current Java version might be different from mine.   Hi am Swapnil I am just a fresher passout of 2011 batch of engineering from Mumbai University I have developed dynamic websites on PHP and have quite a good experience working with php for 2years. Now When I went for interviews I got selected for a company that manifolds into PHP and its technologies to create websites.The other company in which I also got selected offers more than half the higher package than previous but I have to work here on .net platform and all the Microsoft Technologies which I do not merry. The work environment of php company is quite cool with 400employees(onli 10 php developers) and the .net company has only a strength of 20employees Now the thing is I do not know about Enterprise Application Building and other stuff so guys If any advice that may help me select my job would be appreciated.

• How can I prototype my app better?

  A few weeks ago I saw a story about a master app designer showing how he worked with good old pen and paper to do effective prototyping before writing code. I'm unable to dig up that story (and I think it was a video) but if you could recommend any other useful resources I'd appreciate them. I know roughly what I want to build, but want a useful framework for thinking about how the screens should flow together. The app I want to build is for the iOS platform, but I think the video might have been about creating a web app. Thanks!

• Macbook Pro late 2011 screen brightness issue

  The keys to set the screen brightness work properly but everytime I reboot, the screen brightness is reverted to 100%, which is very annoying. I've already tried to add the following lines to /etc/rc.local but with no success (only the keyboard backlight stays off): #!/bin/sh -e # # rc.local # # This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel. # Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other # value on error. # # In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution # bits. # # By default this script does nothing. echo '1' > /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/leds/smc::kbd_backlight/brightness echo '6' > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness rfkill block bluetooth exit 0` This worked for me when I was using Ubuntu 12.04 and also did after the upgrade to 12.10 but then after rebooting the screen brightness always reverted to 100%. • SSL is not enabled in Heroku

  Since Heroku has integrated the piggybank_ssl addon by default, trying: heroku addons:add piggyback_ssl or heroku addons:add ssl:piggyback results in: ! This add-on is now a standard Heroku platform feature. ! Your apps can already use piggyback SSL. But, accessing: mywebsite.herokuapp.com results in: SSL is not enabled mywebsite.herokuapp.com does not have SSL enabled. My production.rb has: config.force_ssl = true What am I missing? Update I have read the page SSL on Heroku, but it's obsolete, they suggest to run: heroku addons:add piggyback_ssl Which is no longer necessary. SOLVED ! I don't change anything, and now it's working. It seems that it was a heroku problem.

• Who uses GnuSTEP?

  This has been a big question lurking at the back of my head. From what I see, GnuSTEP nowadays is primarily a "hobby" project of a small but tightly-knit group of people. However I haven't seen a large commercial (off-the-shelf) application that uses it, apart from the small applications that comes with the GnuSTEP distribution. Heck, since even Ubuntu doesn't really use it then is GnuSTEP really more than being a "hobby" framework? I know that Sony's SNAP at one brief moment uses GnuSTEP, but they killed the platform before it can do anything meaningful.

• What are the most important languages to localize for on the App Store?

  It's obvious that to gain more customers on any given platform, one of the most important steps to take would be to localize your software into many languages: as many as possible, ideally. However, with independently developed apps, it tends to be difficult to localize into many different languages, due to not having the budget and / or time to do so. My question is if I were to localize my apps into languages other than English on the iOS App Store, which languages should I prioritize? (Maybe the top three or four most important.) • How can I customize an FPS game?

  I want to create a customized (modded) fps game where I can change the look and feel of the game to match my intended theme. Some of the things I would like to do: Create a custom map (terrain). Add custom sound effects Change AI (For example, running away instead of actively looking for combat). Change menus and add some storyboard. Script events in game (like a countdown until game over) Change the models of the NPC's. What options do I have? Is there any platform/game/engine/whatever that allows one to do the things above in a reasonable way? I work as a programmer so I'm not afraid of coding some part of the project, but to save time it would be nice to work in some high-level way (like scripting or configuration files).

• Which is the best non-java, dynamic, programming language to build attractive GUIs?

  I am well acquainted with java and groovy but somehow I am not intrigued by the performance or looks of swing based applications that are developed on the same. So I want to learn and know about THE best alternate dynamic programming language (coz I am looking for little bit of luxury while writing code by not willing to fiddle with pointers, memory handling, static typing difficulties etc) to develop attractive cross platform GUIs. To be precise, when I say attractive I mean support for elegant translucent windows and nicer components (not the flashy adobe stuff). • 2D Ragdoll - should it collide with itself?

  Hi, I'm working on a ragdoll fighting game as a hobby project, but I have one dilemma. I am not sure if my ragdoll should collide with itself or not, i.e. if ragdoll's body parts should collide. 2D world is somewhat different than 3D, because there are several layers of stuff implied (for example in Super Mario you jump through a platform above you while going up). The setup I'm currently most satisfied with is when only the parts which are joined by a joint don't collide, so head doesn't collide with neck, neck with chest, chest with upper arm etc, but the head can collide with chest, arms, legs. I've tried every different way, but I'm not content with either. Which way would recommend me to go?

Though cost is an issue at this time, I want to be professional and effective. Should I use existing free platform templates, like PHP, Joomla, or should I develop my own? What are the advantages/disadvantages of either option? As a rough estimate, how much will it cost me to develop and manage my own? And how long will it take. • Is HTML5 more secure to develop for than Silverlight?

  I'm learning Silverlight, and I know that if I master it, I can apply the same concepts to WPF, which means I can do either web or desktop development pretty easily. But I've read articles and followed the discussion online, and I understand HTML5 is gaining traction for being cross-platform, and a lot of people seem to be moving to HTML5. From my understanding, any HTML5 application would be built with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash). But is it secure? It seems like anyone can easily use their browser's "view source" option and grab your code. Is this something I should be worried about, or is there a way to protect against it?

• Would it be possible to build a client portal on Squarespace6?

  I'm helping a family member set up a site which will need to include a secure client portal, providing access to documents and a simple database. I have been encouraging them to go with a more established, open source CSM like drupal or joomla, whose capability in this area is evident. However, they have a strong preference for Squarespace. Does any one know if it would be possible to accomplish this with the new developer platform for squarespace 6? • Material usage, one per model or per object?

  Is it better (memory, time (of developer), space) to use single model that is unwrapped and uses a single material or to break a model down into appropriate bits, each with their own smaller texture/material? Or does it depend on the target platform as to what is acceptable - ie PC vs tablet? An example: Say you have a typical house with a tiled roof. Model it, make sure everything is attached, unwrap the walls/roof so in your UV template the walls and roof would be in one texture file, side-by-side in say a 512x512 file. Model the roof/walls as separate objects, unwrap them individually and have two UV templates. You could then have a 256x256 file for each one.

  I was wondering if there's a possibility to render a retro-pixel-like graphics from 3d model in real time? I'm talking about the Starfarer-like graphics. I know it's hand drawn, and it's 2d. But if I need a 3d objects with the same aesthetics? I'm currently working with Flash. But I don't need any ready-solutions, I just want to understand the principle from any other platform if there is one. So if anybody met anything like this I would appreciate your help. (If it's not possible to do in real time, I could at least pre-render a sequence of sprites. It would be much better than creating hundreds of hand-drawn ones)

• Realtek 8188ce stops working after 2minutes

  I am using ubuntu 12.10 on an hp dm4-2191us via wubi with the Realtek 8188ce wifi adapter. Everything works very well with the exception of the wifi. I have used wicd and it didn't worked at all so i went back to Network Manager with variable success. It works for 30 min - 2 min before i have to reconnect to get it to work again. I would really like to use Ubuntu (it is a better platform in my opinion) but no wifi could really be a deal breaker.

I have worked with different apps and therefore I do have some experience with the Android SDK Platform in general. However, my question is this, how do you think an Android based project would go down with potential employers? I personally don't think the complexity of this project is lower than other projects proposed by my university. • What to use to make voice chat (and some more) on a web?

  I am trying to make available on my website a voice chat for a small group of people that allows some other means to interact such as text messaging, photo sharing, file sharing, simple drawing and silly games. In other words, something similar to older MSN Messenger, but on the web. Any ideas on what to use? To clarify, I am looking for suggestions on languages and libraries to use. I want to be able to fully customize it as much as possible because I might want to add other (somewhat interesting) functions later. Low-level programming is fine if required, but platform dependency isn't that much preferred.
