• Should a new programmer nowadays start with C/C++ or OOP language? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

  so I have been learning java from Deitel's learn java 9th edition. I am up to GUI's and a have a pretty good grasp on OOP etc. I want to go straight to the mobile app development scene, I believe I will learn a fair bit there on using API's, and other tools to develop apps. I am not sure weather I should carry on with PC coding (GUI's etc etc) or skip it all and go direct to learning the Android SDK. So, should I carry on, learn about sockets, writing and reading files, GUI's for PC etc or get a book and jump into android? Thanks a lot guys.

I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc?   I have a Huawei K3765 (USB ID 12D1:1520) and I'm trying to use it with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. I have usb-modeswitch installed, so when I plug the device I can see that it gets switched from storage-mode to modem-mode. My problem is that when I try to create a broadband mobile connection for it, NetworkManager doesn't detect the modem... I tried this on two different laptops. /var/log/daemon.log doesn't show anything of interest, AFAIKT... What could I try?

  it's my first question on stack. Is it possible to infer length of the half angle vector for specular lighting from N·L and N·V without the whole view and light vectors? I may be completely off-track, but I have this gut feeling it's possible... Why? I'm working on a skin shader and I'm already doing one texture lookup with N·L+N·E and one texture lookup for specular with N·H+N·V. The latter one can be transformed into N·L+N·E lookup if only I had the half vector length. Doing so could simplify the shader a bit and move some operations into the pre-computed lookup texture. It would make a huge difference since I'm trying to squeeze as much functionality as possible to a single pass mobile version so instruction count matters. Thanks.

• ubuntu 12.04 LTS hangs on boot when external monitor is connected

  I have a problem with my fresh installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Dell M4600: nVidia quadro 2000M i7-2860 16GB ram 128GB SSD Dell/Samsung 750GB HDD IPS RGB laptop display When it is connected via DP++ to the external Dell U2311H monitor, it hangs on boot or when wakening from suspend. If I detach the DP cable it boots normally. I have tried all combinations that I have found, as adding to grub: "no splash", "boot=pci", "acpi=off", etc... I have also changed in nVidia X settings that external monitor is the primary one and also tried to delete monitor.xml file. There is no change it hangs each time after grub. It starts to load daemons then both screens are blank and then completely hangs with beep sound. What I discovered is if I detach the cable and wait for about 2 sec after grub starts booting and then physically connect DP cable while the Ubuntu is still booting everything works normally and I have a picture on my external screen while the laptop screen is off, just as I wanted. Do you maybe know how to solve this issue? Thank You.

I'm switching a little bit to the mobile plattforms (iOS, android) and would like to gather more info on the visual/graphic side. Using the SDK controls/widgets isn't that challenging and I would love to get deeper into the view/presentation layer. Animations, drawing itself, probably OpenGL.   After trying to install both OS during 2 days, I'm confused and getting mad... I have SSD 128 GB and HDD 500 GB both empty. My laptop is Asus K55VM. BIOS support UEFI. What I have done: Install new SSD (Samsung 830 128GB) Use GParted on liveCD to create new table of partitions (GPT) and create 3 partitions (in the SSD) for different purposes: Partition 1: 80 GB (w7); Partition 2: 30 GB (Ubuntu 12.04 -Just / -); Partition 3: 10 GB unused (for future extesion of the other partitions) Install Windows 7 (with UEFI) in Partition 1. This create: /dev/sda1 - 100 MB for System (UEFI boot I guess) - FAT32 /dev/sda2 - 100 MB aprox. for MSR /dev/sda3 - 79.800 MB aprox. for Windows7 data In this point everything works fine. I have W7. Now I install Ubuntu 12.04 amd64 (with UEFI) as follows: Install / in Partition 2 - /dev/sda4 30 GB ext4, and in the hdd I install /home and swap. I select bootloader in /dev/sda1 (where it's supposed to be the UEFI boot). I install updates and reboot. Problem: Now just appears grub menu with Ubuntu entries and not Windows 7. Alternative solution found: When I turn on laptop, before loading GRUB I press ESC key and appear BIOS boot, so I can select to boot the Windows partition, Ubuntu partition, DVD, USB, etc... but I think is not the best way to boot different OS. I've tried: sudo update-grub2 with no success. What can I do??

  I don't get it. Why is there such a notion that it takes this long to be really proficient in a single language? I somehow think that this statement meant that it takes such a long time to master your language, and use it in a lot of context (web programming, desktop applications, mobile applications, etc.). Adding to that, sometimes you get stuck on a single language in your job and doing repetitive things and don't have much time to study other languages, thus for a certain amount of time, you don't really do much learning at all, and that adds to the amount of time. What do you think?

  My first post.  Working with Google Analytics (GA).  What an incredible tool this is for those that are wanting to know about their site traffic.  GA allows the user to drill down to the screen size of any mobile sources that came in contact with his site.  The user is even able to know region demographics of visitors and the types of browsers and languages being used.  This is a great tool to help determine your target audience and what direction of growth one may be needing to take.GA has Real-Time currently in beta but it already allows the user to see some information.  I can already detect that I am viewing my site from Louisville, KY and what page of my site is being accessed.  I highly recommend using GA for the sheer plethora of data available.
