• Laptop screen turns off on removing power cord

  After a recent upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro from W8, my laptop's screen turns off as soon as you remove the power cord. It turns back on with no issues when you plug the power back in. Keyboard and mouse input is processed while the screen is off. My settings tell the screen to go off after 2 minutes of inactivity on battery. I was having a battery issue from before where my laptop would should down after 5 minutes of running on battery (despite showing 60% left), but I think that's unrelated. Any other info will be provided on request. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on? How can I stop this behaviour?

• Windows 7 MCE client server HTPC

  My HTPC is downstairs connected to my large screen. I would like to use my desktop upstairs to record over the air HDTV and stream it to the HTPC. I have Windows 7 Professional installed on the desktop. I currently have XP on the HTPC, but I'm going to upgrade it to Windows 7. Is there a particular flavor of Win 7 I should use? Is it possible to record on the desktop and use Windows MCE on the HTPC to watch the recorded content? What about live TV? The consensus I've seen is that Windows 7 cannot be configured as a Windows Media Center Extender. Is that the case? If so, what's the cheapest solution for an extender?

• Why doesn't Ghost 2003 offer to fill the destination drive?

  Because it is dangerously low on disk space, I want to upgrade an SBS 2003 server by replacing its existing 72GB drive with a 364GB drive. When I tried to use Norton Ghost 2003 to clone the disk it didn't suggest that I use the entire new drive. I'm worried that I caused the process to fail by overriding its decision - although the cloned drive boots in Safe Mode, if I try booting it normally then none of the SQL Express instances start and something causes the server to reboot before even the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen appears. Does Ghost 2003 know something that I don't? Or should I be using some other software?

  I run Windows XP inside a virtual machine for some tasks. I attempted to use git to version the image for virtual box; however, it is about 6GB after all the service packs. I only have 6GB of ram and git bombs out saying it is out of memory. I would basically like to have snapshots of Windows so that I can simply blow away an image and start anew when I want to. I like to have something I can rollback to in the event that an upgrade doesn't work so I would prefer to use version control or snapshots if the filesystem supports it. Any ideas on what tools I can use to do that?

• Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

  We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)?   I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday on a headless home server. I use the server for a variety of purposes, and what I don't know how to do via SSH I've alway been able to do through VNC. However, since the upgrade vino-server will no longer run if there isn't a monitor attached. Before it used to start up without a problem. Even by attempting to run the server via SSH gives me a "could not load display" error. Summary: I need to get vino-server running at boot time on a server with Ubuntu 10.04, without a monitor attached.

  I would like to make a script which can maintain multiple servers via SSH. I want to control the authentication/authorization in such a manner that authentication is done by gateway and any other access is routed through this ssh server to internal services without any further authentication/authorization requirements. So if a user A can log into server_1 for example. He can then ssh to server_2 without any other authentication and do what ever he is allowed to do on server_2 (like shut down mysql, upgrade it and restart it. This could be done via some remote shell script). The problem that I am trying to solve is to come up with a deployment script for a JavaEE system which involves databases and tomcat instances. They need to be shutdown and re-spawned. The requirement is to have a deployment script which has minimal human interaction as possible for both developers and operation.

  I'm building a server with a RAID5 array, based on a hardware controller. I want to be able to later add additional disks and have the array rebalance across all of the disks, enlarging the usable size. I also want to be able to later upgrade to bigger disks (one at a time, of course) and then expand the array to fill the entire drive. These features are available in Linux software raid (md). I've also heard they're available in some hardware controllers. Currently, I own the Adaptec RAID 3805 card and the 3ware 9650se card. I'd prefer to use the Adaptec if possible, but I can't find if either of these cards offer this feature. If they don't, are there other affordable (read as: sub-$600) RAID cards available that can accomplish this?

• How can I start an X11 session on my headless Fedora 13 server?

  I have a small home server using Fedora 13 as operating system. Since the upgrade to Fedora 13 I cannot start the X11 server. (I need it to use vnc) When I try to start the server, both the nouveau and the original NVIDIA driver claim that there's no physical monitor attached (which is true) and that the X server cannot start because the initial display modes cannot be probed. I tried to manually add the display modes to xorg.conf but they seem to be ignored. Some forums suggest to simply use the VESA driver in this situation, but since I can't get it run either (different, more obscure message) I want to get it working with the nouveau driver as a matter of principle. Temporarily attaching a monitor would mean a lot of work for me ( 1 hour and currently it's almost 35°C/95°F in my home) I want to try that only if that definitely fixes the problem and stays that way if I remove the monitor again) How can I make the driver work without having a physical monitor attached?   I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 (basic upgrade from Windows 8). It is complaining of Sentinel Runtime Drivers incompatibility. I've looked for it in my Programs & Features list, but it's not there by that name nor SafeNet (as related by google search) nor do I see any obvious candidates for it having been bundled with another listed application. I tried the "Sentinel Runtime Driver Cleanup" program from the SafeNet website. It ran but was ineffective, even after a reboot. Do you recognize this "Sentinel Runtime Drivers"? I ran MalwareBytes too, just in case, but it found nothing.

• Actual High Speed USB flash drive

  I'm looking to upgrade my EEE 1000H by possibly replacing the HDD with simple (internal) usb connected storage. The problem I'm having now is that I can't seem to find any actual high speed usb sticks. They all proclaim high speeds, but usually turn out to be ~30 mb/s - much lower than the 60 mb/s (480 mbit/s / 8 ) I understand USB 2.0 is at - no ? Can anyone enlighten me as to why no USB sticks seem to go past that low bar or alternatively point me in the direction of some actual high speed usb sticks ? • How to play audio through a bluetooth headset in Windows 7.

  I recently did an in-place upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 RTM. For the most part, things have went brilliantly. The only issue I've been facing is regarding my bluetooth headset, a Dell BH200. The laptop is an Inspiron 1720. I can get Windows 7 to pair with the headset, and even get the bluetooth settings to show that there is stereo audio available. The problem is that the bluetooth headset never shows up in my sound output devices list. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the bluetooth drivers from Dell, tried turning on/off all of the features of the headset, removing the bluetooth driver and letting windows redetect and install but nothing has worked so far. I guess I should mention that the headset worked fine in Vista. Anyone have any ideas?

• Rack processes taking over CPU under Passenger

  I have a Spree site running the following stack: Nginx 1.0.8 Passenger 3.0.9 Ruby 1.9.2-p290 Rack 1.3.6 Rails 3.1.4 Spree 0.70.5 I recently upgraded from Spree 0.70.3, which also brought a Deface upgrade from 0.7.x to 0.8.0. Since then things have been very unstable. Recently we've seen some CPU-hogging processes which drive load up on the server and grind the whole thing to a stop. They're Rack processes and it looks like Passenger is starting them; they're owned by the site-runner user, an unprivileged user who owns the application code. (Passenger automatically runs the site code as the user who owns it.) If I restart Nginx and kill the runaway processes, it helps for a while, but eventually similar processes return and bog things down again. How can I figure out what's starting these processes, what they're trying to do, and how to stop them?

  Hi, I'm on a Host Europe VPS running Ubuntu 8.04 server. PHP version is 5.2.4. Now there is an application (Moodle 2.0) that needs at least PHP 5.2.8. I don't want to upgrade serverwide to PHP 5.2.8 because that might impair other applications (e.g. Plesk). The FAQ at Host Europe suggest to install an additional PHP 5.2.8 in /opt/php and I think I can handle that with $ dpkg -i php_..._.deb --root /opt/php (Is that correct, by the way?) However, how do I point Apache to the new PHP installation? Thanks for any advice, Ralf

• Very slow Windows 7 on Thinkpad T61

  I have a very strange problem with my fresh install of Windows 7 Profesional, 64bits on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 : The overal performance is very slow, the disk is constantly spinning, even without any program running (after boot, no other programs installed). The boot process is very slow itself (4-5 minutes). I mention that the laptop was fine on XP until the upgrade. Thanks ! Additional info (as requested by the comments) : 2GB RAM Yes, I added all the manufacturer (Lenovo) drivers and updates (using the utility provided by Lenovo) Tried with both 32 and 64 bits editions. The 32 bits one is performing a little better, but not very usable either. The hdd has enough space (20 GB or so) The problem is still present on a fresh install, so no recycle bin emptying or unistall programs (there aren't any except plain 7) would help. I'm not a newbie, so no obvious causes are left unchecked

  I was having so many problems with my laptop & Windows vista that I have updated to Windows 7 64bit. Because I was having so may problems I wanted a 'clean' upgrade so didn't want to carry over any programs or settings. Prior to changing over I saved all the folders I wanted from MS mail to a separate drive and then updated to Win 7 and Office 2010. To my horror I don't seem to be able to import my .eml messages into Outlook which means all my mail is in limbo. Please can anyone help me to simply import my old inbox messages into my new inbox as I have given up trying using the import/export menu as there doesn't seem to be a choice that works. Help!! Not too good a nerd!

• Quickbooks Error - Can't turn off auto updates

  My company uses quickbooks pro 2002 and unfortunately they won't upgrade at this time, the program keeps freezing and giving methe error: This action cannot be completed because this program is busy.. Then asks to switch or retry, I tracked it down to being an issue with IE since it's an old program and can't use the new versions of IE (the program uses IE for it's interface for some STUPID reason). Everyone says to disable auto updates but the problem is that I can't get to the options area to disable the updates (the options area uses IE!!!) so I'm screwed, I have to sit there and click retry 40-50 times several times a day and it's driving me nutz. I've been looking online for days but have not found a solution to this predicament. Is there a way to disable auto updates through the configuration files? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Outlook 2010 - Downloads same messages multiple times when opening

  I run multiple POP mailboxes, and have the 'Leave copy of messages on server' set for 20 days. I have been working like this for several years. However, I have just this week upgraded to Outlook 2010, and for some reason a couple of the mailboxes are downloading all the messages again, each time I open outlook. I have gone through all the settings but I can't see anything obvious, and apart from the upgrade to 2010, I havent touched any settings (2010 imported everything from 2007). I use webmail when away from my PC, hence why I leave a copy of emails on the server. Any ideas? It only downloads when Outlook first opens, thankfully not every time I do a send/receive.

• Can't open an SSH session because of OpenSSL version mismatch [on hold]

  I just ran apt-get upgrade, and according to /var/log/apt/history.log, openssl has been updated to version 1.0.1e-2+rvt+deb7u7. Now I have one SSH session still open, but I can't open another one. I restarted SSH, which returned OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 1000105f, you have 10001080. I tried apt-get remove openssl && apt-get install openssl with no luck. • Are all SATA cables compatible with SATA 3?

  I have a HP Compaq de5700 Small Form Factor desktop computer, and I am looking to upgrade it's hard drive. When I open up the box, it clearly has available SATA connectors on the motherboard, but no indication as to which SATA version (1, 2, or 3). The hard drive I am considering is a SATA 3. My concern is that if the motherboard also supports SATA 3 and I use an old SATA cable (v1 or v2), might there be problems? This is a bare drive, so I don't expect that a cable will come with it, and I have not been able to find the manual for this machine. Thanks.

• Lenovo ThinkServer TS130 1105 - does 32/64 depend on RAM?

  Just got in a Lenovo ThinkServer TS130 1105 (Xeon E3-1225V1) and a (new, sealed, holographed, looks legit) copy of Windows Server 2008 32/64 (standard) to run on it for a pretty lightweight job (currently handled, adequately, by a terrifyingly old Optima P4 running Windows 2000 server - really lightweight, but long-past-due for replacement, without any particular need or excuse for server 2012...) The 64 bit disc sits there and does nothing. The 32 bit disc boots. I haven't spotted any mention of this in the TS130 Manual (I have now combed it, and find no mention of a need to populate in pairs - a preferred order to populate in, yes, but no mention of pairs being required) but I begin to wonder if it's due to the fact that the 4GB RAM suppled with it was a single DIMM, rather than a pair. Better for upgrading, but perhaps requiring an upgrade (or sidegrade) right away to install the x64 version?? Anyone know? I tried the 64-bit DVD on a desktop with an AMD Athlon II X4 635 processor which normally runs Windows7 in 64 bit, and it booted up just fine.

• System reserved

  I have a HP laptop. I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate from home basic. Now I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 8 but when I do I get a message saying not enough system partition. So I opened the disk manager and increased the size of system reserved partition and it was of no use I still got the same error. Then I unfortunately deleted the 100MB system reserved partition by right clicking it and clicking format in the disk manager! Now I am not able to boot any CD's from the startup including OS and recovery CD. Whenever I press esc it always goes to the login screen and it doesn't say anything about the boot from CD option. Now I could not even use my recovery CD. I have 3 questions: Is it necesseary to create a system reserved partition if so how to create it? How to use my recovery cd How to install win 8
